This hilarious collection of all-new comic strips by Gemma Gené (157ofGemma) tells the story of how one tiny pug met his new family and became one of the cutest, sassiest, and most popular pugs in the world. Guaranteed to warm the hearts of dog parents and pet-lovers everywhere. Mochi is a sassy, jamón-loving, opinionated middle-aged pug living his best puglife. He has way too much personality for someone his size and a very particular way of seeing the world. But how did he get to be such a larger-than-life diva? Was he born this way? And more importantly, did Mochi choose the puglife, or did the puglife choose him?
This book tells the story of Mochi’s pugpyhood, from the day the cutest puppy in the world earned his mom’s eternal love at first sight, to all the formative experiences that shaped him into the aloof charmer we have grown to love. A heartwarming and humorous journey that all dog parents can relate to, Mochi’s Pugpyhood will smack you in the face with cuteness.
Adorably cute - this little pug is a terror and I love him! Reminds me of my spoiled rotten furbabies. Dogmoms everywhere will recognize the clear adoration between Mochi and his mom. 🥰🐶💩
Gemma Gene goes back to the day she adopted her pug Mochi, and through his puppyhood.
If you're familiar with Gene's work, then it basically more of the same. This is no bad thing as even the pages that are largely repeats of her earlier book are still entertaining. She acknowledges her complete babying of Mochi, as she observes his quirks and endearing personality. A quick but amusing read.
Pup fiction? Pugerback writer? Anyway. Adorable illustrations in this fun little jam of a read. The generally underwrought plot (and that's fine) has to do with Mochi being a puppy and then coming to that tough time for any pet owner: your best friend's first surgery, let alone in the Covid era when you can't even step inside the vet's office with your bonded canine.
The storytelling sometimes comes off a bit precious for my taste, though I would follow Mochi to the moon and back. (Yes, if most pets cross some rainbow bridge at their end of days, I feel pugs probably go to the moon. Don't even try to change my worldview.)
I've followed @157ofgemma on Instagram for some time, as have my own @wunderpugs, and her illos are always spot on about The Pug Life. (Yes, we're those people with a dogstagram account. We're basic, we love it, and we make no apologies.) I spotted this breezy book in Indy Reads Bookstore and decided I had to have it. In time, we'll collect more of Gemma's pug tomes. In closing, support your local indie bookstores, people!

This book reminded me of Hyperbole and a Half in the best way - the comics were hilarious and told so many stories wrapped into one. Mochi's parents are so clever and made this such an enjoyable read!
This sassy little pup is very opinionated and knows precisely what he wants, when he wants it. His adoption story will tug at your heartstrings and pull you right in. From the moment he arrives home, you'll be introduced to this little guy's big personality and fall even harder.
When I grow up, I want to be like Mochi - spoiled, confident, demanding, and adorable. His passion and dedication to ensuring he gets everything he wants is truly inspiring. This kind of humorous story-telling through comics has become one of my absolutely favorites to read. It was a book that I couldn't help but laugh out loud to.
I read Living With Mochi last year and I loved it so much that I would have immediately picked up Mochi’s Pugpyhood, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in KU, so I couldn’t read it right then and there. However, Amazon has been showing it to me lately and since it was in KU and I’m in a comic phase, I decided to pick it up and I couldn’t have made a better decision. Mochi’s Pugpyhood was a true joy to read — I had the absolute best time with it! It was so fun, it made me laugh out loud multiple times, and I related to it so hard. Gemma Gené perfectly captures what it’s like having a dog, the bond you share with them, and just how important they are and how they enrich your life. I loved this so much and I could read a thousand books about Mochi!
Service Pets become a big part of our family. Neighbors come to love and know our pets as they grow from pups to dogs. Most people who don’t value pets wouldn’t understand that the same way we eat, drink, breathe and utilize the bathroom pets do the same which makes them human.
So so so cute! Anyone who is a dog lover, has fur babies and loves pugs will love this book! It's not very long and is a true story. It reminds me of Sarah Scribbles, whom I love! So, if you enjoy her, you'll like this too. If you want a short read that is really cute, pick it up! Preferably at your local library!
Absolutely adorable. Gemma Gene nails what it’s like to own a pug in ways that are both laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly touching. I will read anything she creates. A must-have for pug owners and anyone who loves dogs
It’s only January 2, but I can already administer the award for The Cutest Thing I’ll Read in 2025.
And to all fellow nominees: before y’all give up the ghost, remember you too are pug-tacular. But Mochi can go celebrate this win with a victory nap and maybe some bacon. Happy New Year, y’all.
This was such a sweet story. I loved reading about Mochis first adventures after being adopted. I have a velcro dog too (much larger than Mochi!), so, much of this was super relatable.
not even gonna lie... this was so cute. I laughed. actually laughed. I dont normally read comics but because of a kindle challenge I did read this one and will be reading the 2nd book too. simply adorable!!!! relatable if you have your own baby pup too.
That was such an adorable book about a pug puppy. Mochi is so very special. I am glad Mochi made it thru the surgery. Thank you for including photos of the real Mochi.
THIS WAS GREAT! haha MORE MOCHI FOREVER! After reading the first one and seeing there was another one, I was so excited to read about this sweet dog loving family again! <3
