When scandal comes calling and Vicki leaps into the fray, you know it’s gonna be big. This here’s Texas after all.
Meet Victoria Bohanan, a twenty-six year-old Dallas debutante turned bartender babe who rejected her father’s saintly sinner ways and struck out on her own – well, sort of. Her mom’s credit card comes to the rescue on occasion, but Vicki is still her own woman, with less than lusty – er, lofty – aspirations and a mind constantly limping from the gutter.
But Texas moms don’t raise fools. Vicki will earn that twenty dollar tip by guessing the mistress’ name and your favorite drink faster than you can belly up to the bar. That sharp wit has gotten her out of more than one disastrous situation – until the mouth sinks her right into another.
When an old high school flame returns to town with a pregnant wife in tow and a pastorate position lodged under his belt, life quickly becomes tangled. This time we’re not talking between the sheets. Sooner than Vicki can down a shot of Jack, her former boy-toy is embroiled in scandal that threatens to implode the megachurch his parents built – and send the gossiping gaggle into a tailspin faster than a quarterback sack on Sunday.

Life is filled with tragedy and Ms. Bale's writing reflects this reality. However, there is always a silver lining...even if one must spend their entire life searching for it.
In her previous career, Ms. Bale traveled the United States as a Government Relations Liaison, working closely with Congressional offices and various government agencies. This experience afforded her a glimpse into the sometimes "not so pretty" reality of the political sphere. Much of this reality and various locations throughout her travels make it into her writing.
She dreams of the day she can return to visit Alaska.
Life prepared to teach me lessons. And for a hard-headed, smart-mouthed woman with a Texas-sized attitude only a mother could love, I had to learn them the hard way.
It was time to swear off men. Become a nun - well that was out of the equation. I'd long ago relinquished virgin status. But if they could reconstitute orange juice, why could I become a reconstituted virgin?
The closest Janine has come to losing her virginity was when she hit an enormous pothole while riding our bikes when we were twelve. If her mother had her way, Janine would still be a virgin even after her wedding night.
The plaster coating of make-up on Lorraine's face threatened to splinter and crack around the Botox smile.
One thing I love about Texas is that the speed limit is more a suggestion than an actual ticketed offense.
The blush brightened Janine's face so fast, a bystander flying past the window might've mistaken it for a hot flash.
That hit my intimacy radar faster than a politician denying his latest scandal.
My Review:
This book was a delight from start to finish. I savored the clever and snarky humor, amusing insights, and observational humor. The premise was fresh, the writing was crisp, and the story was well paced and endlessly entertaining. Ms. Bale's characters were realistically drawn in the cartoonish kind of way that overly entitled, snobbish, and hypocritical people generally appear to be. I adored everything about socially and physically awkward Vicki and her tendencies toward foot-in-mouth disease, and I have high hopes and aspirations for hunky Zeke as well. Ms. Bale's tale was perfectly balanced with humor, intrigue, greed, snoopiness, scandal, gossip, mystery, death, cartel involvement, mean girls, stakeouts, and handsome ex-boyfriends. She kept me guessing to the end. I am beyond ecstatic that I already have the next book in the series waiting for me on my kindle.

It was a freebie. That's why this 80-year-old grandma chose to read "Look before you jump". I thought I was in for a sleazy chicklit novel, but found for the most part that it was a lively story of a frisky woman who had a lot going for her. I particularly liked the way she became a sleuth and set about finding what really happened to the new friend she had clicked with. Reminiscences about the old boyfriend were funny and made this frequently water-drenched bar bunny a likeable person. I give it a thumbs-up and might even read it again when I need cheering up.
Look Before You Jump is a funny, sexy mystery that will keep you smiling, gasping and turning its electronic pages. The protagonist, bartender babe Victoria Bohanan, seems to be in conflict with almost everyone and everything she comes in contact with: men, her pillar-of-the church parents, her boss and her own hormones. Oh, did I mention men?
Through the haze of an early morning hangover she decides she can do without men forever. About this time Vicki discovers that Bobby, her first and only real love from her youth, has come back to town which prompts her to rescind her vow . But Bobby has become a pastor and is bringing his wife with him which sends Vicki back to swearing off and at all men. Things change when Bobby is charged with a crime Vicki knows he didn’t commit.
The odds that a bartender can help clear the name of someone accused of murder are not great. However, if a certain bartender babe has a history with a certain Texas Ranger those odds might increase. And do.
There were quite a few laughs, a few she-did-what (?) moments and some well thought-out investigative procedures on the way to solving the mystery. The ending of Look Before You Jump will not disappoint. Just this time, don’t look. Go ahead and jump.
You are told this book will make you laugh and I was skeptical. Too many authors promise you a good time, only to take you to a slapping pies story (not my kind of humor) or boring remembrances of their younger times. But this time, it is true. The adventures of Victoria, barista at night and many things during the day are funny and charming. You can't take the story seriously. She comes from one of the richest families of Texas, but can't stand her father for reasons unexplained. You understand though it is connected to his narrow-minded approach of life, her streak of independence and some silly errors she committed when she was a lot younger. Her mother has not cut any bridges with her and keeps their relationship alive with her black American Express -unlimited expenses, very useful for clothes shopping. So, you have a young and pretty bartender, with clothes costing more than her salary, whose flat gets vandalized and renovated for the price of buying a new one. She has more guys around her than flies around honey and does not know yet which one she really wants. Vicky gets involved in a scandal and a murder that threatens her mental and physical well-being. She has to become a kind of P.I. to solve it and protect her ex-boyfriend. But it does not solve her commitments issues yet. We will have to wait for the second or third tome of this series to know more about her choice of man.
LOOK BEFORE YOU JUMP by D. A. Bale is a fast moving story full of unusual twists and turns and lots of romance, intrigue and suspense for Bale’s protagonist, amateur super sleuth Victoria Bohanan. She grabs her readers’ attention placing them next to Vicki as events of her life unfold. The author skillfully uses a concept of transitioning back and forth between Vicki’s past and present. Bale opens the readers’ eyes showing them what is in store for Vicki’s future. The author delivers a gripping storyline written around Vicki’s refusal to allow her life to be controlled by what others think she should be doing. Readers learn the backstory of Vicki and her relationships with her family and Bale continues to add additional information as the storyline progresses. Readers enjoy sitting on Vicki’s shoulder as she tries to find her niche in life. Bale introduces readers to support characters, sharing their relationships to Vicki’s past or present life and the role they play as the story proceeds. The author shares Vicki’s refusal to sit back and let others investigate the unusual unfolding events of the death of an old friend’s wife and unborn child.
Readers find themselves on the edge of their seats as they see Vicki’s life is in danger. Bale creates a story of mystery, murder and romance around strong well-developed characters, who work well together as Vicki refuses to back down until she finds justice for her friend. Bale provides her readers with the first book in her new series, with characters bringing LOOK BEFORE YOU JUMP to life as if it were a full length movie. The author brings her readers a new mystery romance series with all the elements to keep interest from the first page to the unpredictable ending. A must read.
I won this is a Goodreads giveaway. My opinion is just that...mine...and completely unbiased.
Okay, so when I won this it sat on my shelf for a little while because I thought it was just going to be one of "those trashy novels". Maybe it was the boobs on the front..... Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was "real" drama, humor, suspense, insightfulness, and yes, a little sexiness thrown in. It is not only written well, but flows with ease in it's telling. I will be looking forward to the next in this series.
What would you do to prove your friend's innocence? Vicki can't believe that Bobby is back in town it has been so long since she has seen him. Things didn't end well for them and she has fond memories of their time together. He is looking so good but he now has a pregnant wife so she has to stop herself from going there. She hasn't really done much with her life, she left home as she just couldn't live with her father anymore and she works as a bartender and basically has fun. Catching up with Bobby and his wife makes her realize that she hasn't find the one person that she can trust completely. The last man she trusted hurt her badly and she just doesn't want to go through that again. But she just might have as Bobby's wife has just committed suicide off her building but why? Her & Bobby were so happy something is wrong here and when Bobby is arrested she has no choice but to ask her ex Zeke for help. She is still attracted to the man but she can't trust him again she just wants him to use his contacts to help her find out what really happened. Can Vicki really find out the truth or will she just cause even more problems? Can she trust Zeke to have her back and to help her find out who killed the wife? A good read.
"Look Before You Jump" starts out as a pretty mindless piece of fluff, quite enjoyable but going nowhere in particular. It also has the slightly annoying habit of asking a question, followed immediately by "Don't answer that." Not to forget the annoying "My legs went all noodley" which occurs more than it should - not at all would have been preferable. And then, six chapters in, the pregnant wife of her first flame (and cause of a scandal remembered locally to this day) is found dead, apparently having fallen from the roof of Vicki's apartment complex. Of course she has to investigate, bringing her bartending skills and ability to guess occupation and drink required at the drop of a hat to bear. So, it's no longer a pretty mindless piece of fluff, it's a mysterious piece of fluff! It's a fast and funny read, the mystery is no great shakes, but you will end up knowing a lot about Vicki's life, eating habits (basically out of control), dress preferences (slutty!) and opinions (all over the place). I kinda liked it - 2.5 Stars rounded up to 3 Stars because I got a laugh or two out of it.
This book is a rollercoaster of emotions—humorous, relatable, and at times, quite surprising. Growing up in Texas, I resonate deeply with the wild west vibe and the tendency to push boundaries. It's a refreshing take to see that even the untamed youth of Texas can hold their faith without falling into hypocrisy. Occasionally, the narrative felt exaggerated, but then it would swing back to being spot-on. The story really gains momentum when it shifts into a bona fide mystery, reigniting my engagement. It's intriguing to see the protagonist evolve into a more traditional role, yearning for a single love interest, perhaps influenced by fewer opportunities to stray. The journey towards self-realization is painted with hope, suggesting that Vicki may mature and reconcile her feelings towards her father, who initially seems to be only marginally more promiscuous than she is.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. And it did Vickies antics did make me chuckle several times. I liked how the author wrote the book in a conversational manner. It made you connect with the main character. I could hear her voice and even gave her a face. But something about her made me envision her as a blonde. I used the face of an actress whose name is unfortunately eludes me at this time. Yes, I think this book would make a fun movie. This is the first book I've read by this author and I plan on continuing to read her stories. I think a lot of you will enjoy it.. go buy it, you won't regret it.
Sassy, smart mouth and incorrigible are some of the nice terms 'some' people would use to describe Vicki and those are some of the more flattering ones. As a daughter of a very distinguished Texas family she has a heritage to uphold which she does her absolute best not to. The stream of consciousness employed in the book lets the reader feel just about everything Vicki is (well almost everything if you know what I mean - don't answer that!! ) Laugh out loud with her as she kind of sort of plays detective amidst the many potholes of her love life.
Fast paced and plenty of tension, especially of the criminal and sexual varieties. The main character, Vic, is as spunky and feisty as they get. Her job as a sexy bartender couldn't be more perfect. And of course she'd get involved in investigating a crime. With her ex. This gal is full-throtle through life. The twists kept coming and kept me guessing right until the end. Well established, voicey characters drive this fun romantic suspense.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Vicki is a snarky and hilarious character and this book will make you laugh out loud! There are references to sex but no sex scenes. There is some violence but it is not graphic. It was just a funny and well written story that I highly recommend.
Vicki is a kooky character but she’s strong and independent and pretty much fearless. The writer has her communicate with her readers in such a fun way it felt like I was really in a conversation with her! I experienced so many ’laugh out loud’ moments while also enjoying a pretty cool whodunnit storyline. Definitely worth reading!
This is my first time reading books by D.A. Bale and it certainly won’t be the last. The heroine is hilarious, sexy and so independent. All the characters are very well developed. The storyline is amazing. Each relationship keeps you guessing what’s coming next. Fantastic job.
A gentler fun than the ms. Plum series but just as entertaining. There are enough differences that although that series comes to mind, it isn't what lingers. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a light hearted mystery.
This here bein' a story in the South of USA, had all the trappings of heat, fake anger, loyalties and hates. Not my cup of tea, or beer swilling big breasted heroin. No substance.
Good read. Flows well. Amusing and keeps your attention. I would recommend this book. Especially if you’re the type that gets interrupted and can’t get back to it for a few days. No trouble remembering where you left off.
This is the first time I've read a book by this author, glad I picked it! This book had it all, great character's, mystery, romance and had me laughing alot ! Would highly recommend it
Seemingly bad girl is actually good at sizing people up. She also does what has to be done to protect her friends even if no one understands why she would put herself in harms way. I found that her drinking and sexual habits were a bit overdone.
D. A. Bale wrote a refreshingly funny and clean book. I truly enjoyed having the sexy scenes left to my own imagination. This book keeps you laughing without turning 15 shades of red from the explicit content.
If you are a Stephanie Plum follower. If you are from Texas and/or appreciate the brashness of some bold Texas women... if you like a little mystery mixed with a little of sass - This book is probably right up your reading alley.
I’ve been reading the Reacher crime thriller books for so many years and I was looking for something different. This satisfied the itch 100%! I loved this and I am looking forward to the rest of the series!
Not as funny as Stephanie Plum, but funny and interesting. Easy to follow the plot line and the various characters. Gives you a totally different background from Plums working class background.
Good read, I liked the slightly sexy parts and the funny parts a good blend of comedy and drama. I would recommend this easy read. I didn't like the parts when Vicki was suppose to be talking to the reader.
Not for me. Sounded good, but I couldn't finish it, all the main character did was drink until she blacked out and had sex without realizing it. Didn't remember it, or the men she'd wake up with...
In real life, she'd probably end up a murder victim.
This was an easy fun read great characters and well written dialogue all make a good start to a new series. My favorite thing was the humor it's nice when there's a little comic relief. I read on.
A fast paced mystery sprinkled with hunky men that is a book I'd suggest to my decorum mom. There are some surprises along the way, and I look forward to the next book in this series.
