Nothing is ever freely gifted. The universe always comes, whether in the brightest, cheek-aching second of the day or the darkest, most plaintive hour of the night, to collect its payment. To rattle and shake your world. To slither into the illusion of Eden painted by strokes of lies and deceit.
And I had left the door open for it, welcoming the thief into my house to steal what was dearest to me.
Even if I had done every unthinkable, irrational, detestable thing to prevent it.
To fight the inevitable loss of the base mistake I had made. The princess that was never supposed to be mine. The deception that had slowly bled darkness into my soul. Eating away at the back of my mind in a cackling mockery. Throttling my throat with the words I had chosen not to speak.
Because the love I had found, the one I had never expected, never foreseen, was a tale I had woven full of lies to keep.
There was always a price. For everyone, in everything. Innocent and guilty alike. And now I’d learned mine. But what would theirs be?
*Bound is book two in A Twisted Tale trilogy, which is a modern day retelling of Helen of Troy. It is new adult/contemporary romance and is recommended for 18+. This trilogy must be read in order.*
R. Phillips loves to write romance stories full of angst, plot twists and a generous sprinkling of salacious scenes. Playing with timelines is one of her favorite things to do in her writing along with including a dash of mythology. She’s also a big fan of leaving your jaw on the floor.
Rachael is a native Texan, reader first, and frequently imagines her book scenes to songs. She is a lover of coffee, tex-mex, and is probably too particular when it comes to her choice in red wine. She credits any success to the long line of strong women she comes from who gave her a steely spine, taught her to know her mind, and to always rise.

I’m really torn on what to rate this book because I struggled so hard getting through it. I did not really enjoy this one and after coming off of Entangled, I was pretty disappointed.
The only thing that made this book tolerable for me was the guys (Jace & Coop) and the fact that I was eager to see what was going to happen after the last book’s cliffhanger.
I’m going to say it: I do not like El at all. There has been something about her that has rubbed me the wrong way from the first book and this book just confirmed that for me.
I also didn’t understand the LA stuff. It felt so disjointed from the storyline we were presented in book 1. It confused me so much.
I don’t know what’s going to happen in book 3, especially after that cliffhanger. Even though this book was meh for me, I will be reading the conclusion! I’m hoping for everything to be wrapped up cleanly and for Eleanor to be redeemed (for me).
Whose team am I on? I still really like both guys but I will say that I am leaning more Team Jace!
Just like book 1, we had repeated phrases. It’s such a pet peeve for me. The term “night-forest” in reference to the guy’s eyes was used 27 times.
BOUND 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 All the stars. Incredible. Amazing. Unforgettable. @rphillipswrites you are so talented. This book had me feeling ALL the emotions. I laughed, cried, gasped, loved, swooned, & was shocked.
✨ There was nothing to write after you, You took the words with you ✨
Bound picks up right where Entangled left off, & wastes no time getting right into the questions we're dying to know the answers to. But don't be mistaken, it still has that suspense I've grown to love from Rachael and had me forming theories of where things will go from here. Everything & everyone has a purpose and I LOVE that about these books.
Another thing I LOVE— the freaking hysterical banter and tension. I am not joking when I say that I was laughing out loud reading these tension filled scenes full of comedic relief. And they were needed because Rachael transports you into each and every scene, so in the hard moments, the ones full of raw emotion, you FEEL everything.
There's a whole other level of tension here too and it's steamy.. 🥵🔥
I cannot tell you how much I loved El in this book. The way she stands up for herself, how she literally gives zero f*cks, is savage as hell, has the funniest inner monologue, and omg- the amount of times she called a certain some Satan 😈 I laughed every. single. time. (and the fact that he just took it.. iykyk) but in all honesty, she has such a huge heart and despite being in an impossible situation faced with an impossible choice, she handled herself so well.
✨“Coop may be your stars and I may be your sun, but Ellie, you’re our goddamn sky.” ✨
Jace and Coop. These men. Impossible not to love. It's no secret that I'm irrevocably #teamcoop and this book only amplified that. I love Coop with everything I have and I LOVED the dual POV this time.
✨ “Only girl to ever bring me to my knees right here.” ✨
After that CLIFFHANGER I can't wait to see where this trilogy takes us. The emotional damage is real, but it's worth it. Because I know Rachael has epic things in store for us.
✨And as each of our broken pieces fit perfectly together, my life finally made sense. I finally understood how someone could ruin so many others’ lives for one person✨
I truly didn’t think anything could top how I feel about Entangled, but here we are. Of course it could…. Rachael did it again.
I don’t even think I have words eloquent enough to explain how beautiful this book was. Rachael’s writing is poetic.
Not only is this a beautiful romance book about a woman who loves two men and is on a journey to figure out if she can forgive, trust, and where or should I say who….. her heart lies with…. BUT it’s a book that constantly has you wanting more and wondering where it will take you next.
I tried to guess where the story was going next and honestly I’ve never been more okay with being wrong LOL because I trust the journey Rachael is taking us on with these characters.
I feel like saying I loved this book is underselling how obsessed I am with this series, this book, this universe, these characters, Rachael’s writing, and everything else. Sooo I’ll leave you with this:
“The thing is…” His voice comes out hesitant as he brings a hand up to play with the ends of my hair. “Coop may be your stars and I may be your sun, but Ellie, you’re our goddamn sky.” His chest heaves against my back with a sigh. “I’m not sure what place we have, how either of us is supposed to exist without you.”
After the insane cliffy in book 1 (rip to my heart), this book starts off right after. El is torn even further apart by both Jace and Cooper and my heart literally couldn’t take. Their all-consuming love is 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 me.
R. Phillip’s writing is gorgeous. It’s full of emotion, depth, and lyrical prose that tugs on my heart to no end.
PLEASE go read this series. I’m consumed.
Read if you like ✨ angsty love triangles ✨ strong & sassy fmcs ✨ broody bad boy mmcs ✨ sunshine mmcs ✨ secrets and betrayals ✨ contemporary Helen of Troy retelling ✨ mortal peril
I’m stingy with my 5’s but this deserved it. It was quick paced and we got all the answers to the questions we wanted! That cliff hanger got me. I can’t wait to see how this ends. If you liked the Ravenhood you need to read this!
Thanks to the author for the ARC! 🧡 add this to your preorder ASAP.
Right, had to edit this review because the arc readers got mad, and I’m still getting notifications about it months later… So I’ll just simply say this book was not enjoyable, at all. Don’t believe the TikTok hype 🥴🥴.
“Tell me something, what happens to the world without the sun?"
"It goes dark.”
Okay but WHAT??!! That cliffhanger. I am unwell.
I liked this second book in the Twisted Tale trilogy, but not as much as the first book. I had a hard time with the time spent in LA. It just felt so different. So young. I had a hard time getting through some of it. Mostly, I just didn't like the heroine as much, especially with the way she went back and forth like that. But the last part of this book... SO GOOD. Diving right into the last book-I need answers!
3.5 Stars ⭐

Bound is the second book in A Twisted Tale trilogy by R. Phillips.
Here we meet again, with a different book, in a different time. But still the same feeling of awe from the words that R. Phillips uses in her stories and me not knowing how to use the 26 letters in the alphabet, to do this one justice, again.
I AM SHOOKETH & I AM UNWELL.
I kid you not, I finished this one and stared off into space for a good five minutes, wondering if what I read was correct, to then read that last bit again. & finding out that indeed that was correct & now not knowing what to do with my life until book three is released. what is life?! idk.
I don’t think I have ever felt so many different emotions throughout one book from pain to shock to happiness to anger to sadness to (and most importantly) love. and you don’t just read it on those pages but you really feel it in your bones, the love. whether it be romantic, familial or friendship its all there within the 456 pages of this amazing, wonderful book.
Bound picks up right where Entangled left off (which is my favorite) like no time has passed. Not only do we have El’s pov but we also have both Coop and Jace’s pov too and I lived for those. the characterization for each person is *chef kiss* even in their own chapters, one of poetry and the other of melody and then one of everything in between.
the twists. the turns. the heavy breathing. the on the edge of your seat. THE MF CLIFFHANGER—oh but is it a good one, I think I really might be masochist, because I now will always live for R. Phillips’ cliffhangers, she takes them to the next level. Even though I now have to wait until the last book is released for ANSWERS I will gladly wait and until then I will have the Bound playlist on repeat.
I really wish I could give more than 5 stars but then again I don’t think any number of stars would do this one justice. IT DESERVES ALL THE STARS!
FAVORITE (some) QUOTES FROM BOUND (i decided that it was best to take out names, for if you decide to read this, you can really feel the words that the character says when they say it, without any outside factors like this review); 1. “You’re the whole damn melody to me.” 2. “[…] hoping like hell they don’t push each other into a symphony of pain and despair before the light of morning washes away the darkness of the night.” 3. “If only so that my fate could be written in the stars with hers for eternity.” 4. […] and I, we’re black and white, perfectly balanced, effortless in a way that soothes every part of me. But […] and I are every painful shade of gray in btw. The heart-stopping dream and the beautiful tragedy.” 5. “He may be your stars and I may be your sun, but Ellie, you’re our goddamn sky.” 6. “An unhurried dance of stars defying gravity, shining despite the shadows of reason we exist in.” 7. “Free-flowing ink is the truth that I speak while the lies puddle at my feet.” 8. “It’s the break in the heart that speaks the truth to the soul.” 9. “I’ll still haunt you for eternity.”
I RECEIVED A FREE ARC FOR BOUND IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.
“You were always selfless enough to leave her be and I was always too selfish to let her go.”
I enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster of the love triangle between El, Cooper and Jace. Book two all occurs in present tense after the fall out of the cliffhanger in Book one. Some Secrets revealed and more twists occur. I loved that they went from Alabama to LA where she is from for a different and interesting environment. Im not really sure about the characters that she considers her three brothers. I sometimes wondered if necessary and if it was going to turn into a why choose. Lol. There is an interesting threat/danger sub plot that that unfolds more as well. Cliffhanger.
Contemporary romance. Triangle. Mainly FMC POV. But a few chapters with the MCs POV. Several Spicy scenes.
“His soul always found hers. Every time, in every life.”
Ahh!! This book especially the ending!! I am loving this story, I even am looking past how annoying El is!
Coop 🫠🥹 I love him so much!
The only thing I didn’t like is all the LA stuff with all of her guy friends. she was super annoying then and they were really annoying too. I didn’t care for them at all. I just felt like that was all a lot of filler and all that could’ve been taken out and everything that happened before and after that could’ve just been an extension of one, and it could’ve been a longer book.
I’m really nervous to start book 3, because it doesn’t have good reviews. I really hope it ends well because I am loving it so much!
this was a really solid middle book in a trilogy. the pacing of this series is done so well and everything feels intentional. i loved getting even more of a mystery than we did in book 1 but i’m terrified to see how book 3 is going to go — if what i think is going to happen happens, i will end up hating this series (all jokes but also very serious lol). my only complaints with this one was jace treating eleanor like she was a prize to be won and then eleanor with the whiplash…. GIRL. she immediately forgave every single person for betraying her trust except for cooper which was really frustrating.
This book was absolutely phenomenal-- I loved the first book, Entangled- but this second installment knocked it out of the park. The cliffhanger at the end of Entangled was one of the craziest I had ever read- but the ending of Bound was even MORE OF A CLIFFHANGER, if possible. Rachael Phillips- are you trying to destroy me?! Thank goodness book 3 will be out early next year, because if I had to wait any longer than that I might not make it! All the slow claps to this new author on knocking it out of the park with these first two books!
Bound begins with a bang, picking up directly where Entangled left us hanging over the edge of that crazy cliff. I am going to try and keep this review spoiler-free, but man that's hard. I will try to be vague, but if you haven't read Entangled yet, just stop reading here and go do that first.
Our FMC has elevated from an emotional love triangle- one that is taking place within her heart, via her current day romance and the broken pieces of her past romance- to staring a very real love triangle square in the face. Oh my, how deliciously suspenseful this all just became! This book is written from multiple POVs, and man that really worked for me. Being able to see things from both Jace and Cooper's viewpoints really rounded out the story and made the whole thing so much more intense, emotional, and, ridiculously hot.
"Don't kid yourself, Ellie. There's a war happening here. Even if you haven't caught on to it yet, and don't think you're getting away with that." Those dimples flash. "Because I know you're way too smart for that shit."
Entangled and Bound have a very unique feel to them. Bound is a contemporary romance that has a magical, destined vibe to it- part of that comes from the author's writing, which is mesmerizing-- and part of it has to do with the destiny thread she weaves into all 3 of the MCs stories- their histories, their present day situations, and the way everything is intertwined, even if they themselves don't know all of the implications that causes, just yet.
"But I noticed it, even that first time I saw them together on the boat. It was obvious in the way they moved together without being aware of it. How strangely they echoed one another. I'd never seen anything like it before. And it scared me. Not because I was threatened by it... well, okay, maybe a little. But it scared me because I was worried what would be left when we all eventually made it to the other side of this, one way or another. Ellie and me, we contrasted each other, the light and the dark as she would say, we balanced each other out. But Coop and her were nothing but a song of darkness, their chords the layers of shadows and suffering. It could so easily spell nothing but destruction for us all."
Coop, one of our MCs, is a poet, and the author takes things to a new level writing from his perspective. My copy of this book is filled with annotating tabs- I am already ordering a new set of books to lend to friends since mine are so full. Right up until the very end of this book, we really don't know how things are going to end up-- and I think this author does a hell of a job making it difficult to "root" for one man or another-- because it's obvious that the FMC cannot choose (and they are both about as amazing as it gets).
"What would I give to soak up this infinity of you- what I did to keep you. How sorry I am that there was never an option, after that first night, for a me without you."
The "destiny" part comes into play in a big way near the end and throws me for a giant loop- reminding me that not all of this story comes down to choices, but to what might instead be fated. SO. DAMN. GOOD.
"So I had hidden the truth, buried it under darkness and love. Tying her to me in the most intimate of ways. Abject terror of her loss driving me to do the unthinkable. Impulsively, stupidly thinking I could hide the secret away for eternity. And then reality collided with fantasy and shattered everything."
Any Ravenhood lovers out there- this is the place to go next if you want to experience a story with the same vibe. The vibe is tough to explain- but if you love Ravenhood, you know what I mean. It's gritty, a little dark, hot in a totally forbidden kind of way, and hugely suspenseful with all of the underlying mystery happening behind the scenes that unfolds along the way.
Read them, please, and then come chat with me about that damn ending and what we think is in store for the final book!
HOLY SHIT!!! how am i supposed to live like this? what in god's name is happening?!?!?
p r o s : • where do i BEGIN? this book hit the ground running. it picked up where Entangled ended, which was on a cliffhanger, where i was patiently waiting to die. • this was my thought process as of page 9, as in the fucking prologue - i am SCREAMING BITCH!!!! shut the fuck up!!!! shutthefuckup SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!! • tbh, after the dust settled with coop's arrival & they left town, i struggled to get through a good chunk of this book. while i wasn't too interested in their time in L.A., this was where the spice came to life, bitch 🥹 • ^ cooper & el during the guys' pool party?! DAMN 🥵 oh, el & jace after the opening of labyrinth?!? jesus harold CHRIST man 🫠 R. Phillips, please never stop writing spicy romance novels. • bro. the fucking TENSION between el, coop & jace?! i am devastated that this isn't a reverse harem situation 😭 i just want them both goddammit. • after they they returned to landing point, ya girl entered a state of severe emotional distress. and when i say severe, i mean i was living, dying & throwing up over the inevitable heartache one of boys was about to face. throwing up!!! • the way R. Phillips dragged me through the muddy emotional turmoil of el making her choice was uncalled for. i felt personally attacked. on top of writing top tier spice, ya girl portrayed gut wrenching heartbreak ✨ beautifully ✨ • and once again, HOLY FUCKING CLIFFHANGER BITCH. i will be devouring Fractured as soon as i hit "post" 🙃
THIS is why I typically don't read love triangles. The impossibility of the choice that El has to make between these two men is agonizing, and I felt every minute of her pain. I always find myself wishing for a "Why choose?" romance rather than making the actual choice in love triangles, but of course R. Phillips takes us THROUGH it with this journey.. and I loved every unbearable minute of it.
Jace is my favorite. I'm all for the dark broody and possessive love interest, but in this case Jace has won me over with his sunshine golden retriever energy. He is perfect in every way, kind, respectful, understanding, supportive. Honestly, at this point I am convinced that Jace is too good for El and everyone else in this story. He needs his own love story, and I may riot if Jace doesn't get an HEA of some sort.
I really enjoyed the addition of El's other men in this one, their whole dynamic and mini-socialite life was really fun to read. I liked how much the universe expanded in this book. Not only do we get to see more into El's life, but we also got more depth to the setting, the relationships, and hinting back stories for Mac, Stef, and Kai that I am dying to know more about.
I felt a bit of a lag in the pace in the middle of the story. While El's LA life was fun to read, I felt it may have been overextended a little to the point of distracting from the main plot. I was sort of wondering where it was going and what the point of it all was. That said, we get some hot HOT spice in there, and some possessive competition between our two men, so I can't say it wasn't entertaining.
My final thoughts are: These books are absolutely worth the read. If you like Love Triangles, Greek Mythology retelling (Helen of Troy), some mystery/crime elements, and contemporary romance, you will love this series. I can't wait to see how this author grows with each new release, she is new to the author scene, but she is absolutely one to watch out for.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
TW's: On page graphic sexual content, drug and alcohol use. Off-page mention of murder/suicide, cheating, physical abuse.
Hands down, easily 5 ⭐️ across the board. This series, FIVE FREAKING STARS.
Do you enjoy romantic suspense/mystery, love triangles, spice and did you love 𝗥𝗔𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗗? Then you need to run and pick up R. Phillips right now!
Bound is book 2 in the 𝗔 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲 series and picks up right where Entangled leaves off. I loved every second of Bound. The romance (Team Coop 🖤), the support characters (where can I find a Stef, Kai and Mac for myself????), the mystery/suspense of what will happen next, THE TENSIONNNN (omfg the tension 🥵). It is all just so EFFING AMAZING.
Do you love a FMC that gives zero f*cks and does what she wants? Yeah, me too. And El is that woman. I love her! I needed book 3 a week ago because uhhh… that cliffhanger 🤯. Sooo excited for the rest of the story and how everything will end.
I highly recommend going into this series blind. Entangled is book 1 in the series (must read in order). Rachael has phenomenal, poetic writing. She’s a gifted writer and is going to be huge one day. I can feel it in my bones!
Thank you Rachael for the gifted ARC. You’re amazing, so incredibly talented and I cannot wait to see where your journey as a writer takes you. To have been with you from almost the start has been such a privilege and I’m so excited for your future. 🫶🏼

Rachael Rachael RACHAEL… oh my god. How could you do this to us! 😭😭😭 that ending… are you kidding me!?!
✨“You’re the whole damn melody to me, Ellie.”✨
Jace Dawson, I LOVE YOU 😭 now I am normally 100% a coop type of gal but Jace Dawson literally stole my heart. I really struggle with love triangles and this book reminded me of why. I seem to always be on the “wrong” side. Now don’t get me wrong, I softened my hatred for coop or “satan” as the book went on. As the story went on, I started to feel for him. I want to like coop people but if there is a jace in the picture, I am 100% team jace.
✨“Coop may be your stars and I may be your sun, but Ellie, you’re our goddamn sky.”✨
✨“Promise me,” he starts slowly. “That no matter what happens, you’ll be happy.”✨
✨I might end up breaking my word the same as him, turning myself into a liar too. Because he was my rising sun who had made me believe, but the horrible truth was that I might like to shine in the darkness a little too much to turn away.✨
Sigh, this was the moment I knew it was game over for me.
Anyway, running to fractured to cry some more. BYE!!!!
I have beef with series where nothing happens in the middle of the books and everything happens at the end / beginning. i feel like that was this book. I’m only going to read the third book bc im in the car and it’s downloaded but i wouldn’t if I had wifi or another book. literally this whole book is the fmc being in luv with 2 boys it’s like okay I get it I didn’t need 300 pages of her sleeping with both of them. also there’s so many random ass people that don’t add anything to the story. sorry not impressed!
Rachael absolutely did it again with this book and I will be thinking about this story and these characters every single day until the final book releases. My heart is still pounding from that ending so I will have to provide a more in depth review when I am able to put my thoughts into words!
Pissed. I’m pissed. I’m angry. I’m pissed. I’m so mad. Why. Stupid. What was the purpose. She made the wrong choice. Stupid. Girl. Dumb girl. The ending. What the heck. WHY. STUPID. GIRL.
