پطرس کے مضامین میں ظرافت عام رواج سے ہٹ کر ہے۔ اور اس کا آغاز مختصر دیباچے ہی سے ہوتا ہے:
”اگر یہ کتاب آپ کو کسی نے مفت بھیجی ہے تو مجھ پر احسان کیا ہے اگر آپ نے کہیں سے چرائی ہے تو میں آپ کے ذوق کی داد دیتا ہوں اپنے پیسوں سے خریدی ہے تو مجھے آپ سے ہمدردی ہے (یعنی آپ کی حماقت سے ہمدردی ہے) اب مصلحت یہی ہے (کہ آپ اپنی حماقت کونبا ہیں) اور اسے حق بجانب ثابت کریں“۔ نہ معلوم یہ حقیقت ہے یا میری شک بھری طبیعت کہ پطرس کے اظہار حقیقت کی تہ میں بھی ظرافت کی ایک لہر دوڑی ہوئی ہے کیونکہ اپنے استاد کی خدمت میں اعترافِ ممنونیت ان الفاظ میں کیاہے: ”اس کتاب پر نظر ثانی کی اور اسے بعض لغزشوں سے پاک کیا“ جس کا مفہوم میرے نزدیک اس کے سوا نہیں ہوسکتا کہ جہاں کوئی بات ہوش مندی کی دیکھی اسے حماقت میں بدل دیا۔
کتاب میں گیارہ مضامین ہیں جو بہ ظاہر ”ہولا خبطا پن“ کے شاہکار ہیں مگر فی الحقیقت سوسائٹی اور تمدن کی دکھتی رگوں کو چھوا ہے اور خامکاریوں اور سفیہانہ رواسم وتوہمات کا پردہ فاش کیا ہے۔ پطرس نے اپنا مطلب زیادہ تر مزاح میں طنز کی پُٹ دے کر نکالا ہے۔ بخلاف دیگر ظرافت نگاروں کے جو تمسخر کو آلہٴ کار بناتے ہیں۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ ان کے مضامین میں باوجود اس احساس کے کہ ہم کو (اور معاف کیجئے گا آپ کو) بےدال کا بودم بنایا جا رہا ہے جھنجھلاہٹ کے بجائے گدگدانے کی ادا نکلتی ہے اور اسی کے ساتھ غو وتعمق کی دعوت ہوتی ہے۔
ان مضامین کے کاتب کو بھی ظرافت سے کافی بہرہ معلوم ہوتا ہے کیونکہ علاوہ دیگر مخترعات کے ”ہاسٹل میں پڑھنا“ کے عنوان کو ہر جگہ ”ہاسٹل پر پڑنا“بنا دیا ہے۔ مضمون میں ظرافت کی چاشنی پہلے ہی فقرے سے شروع ہے:
”ہم نے کالج میں تعلیم تو ضرور پائی اور رفتہ رفتہ بی اے بھی پاس کر لیا“۔ رفتہ رفتہ اور بھی کی معنویت دعوت نظر دیتی ہے آگے چل کر بی اے کے خانے اس خوبی سے گنوائے ہیں کہ بایدوشاید۔
مضمون میں ایسے خاندان کی ذہنیت کا خاکہ ہے جو مہذب اور اخلاق پسندیدہ کا مالک ہونے کے باوصف قدامت پسند ہے اور حال کو ماضی کے آئینہ میں مشتبہ نظروں سے دیکھتا ہے۔ لڑکے نے انٹرنس کا امتحان تیسرے درجے میں پاس کیا ہے تاہم خوشیاں منائی جا رہی ہیں دعوتیں ہو رہی ہیں۔ مٹھائی تقسیم کی جا رہی ہے۔ خاندان خوش حال ہے مگر باوجود استطاعت کے لڑکے کو مزید تعلیم حاصل کرنے کے لئے ولایت نہ بھیجنے کی معقول ترین وجہ یہ ہے کہ گردو نواح سے کسی کا لڑکا ابھی تک ولایت نہ گیا تھا“۔
بڑی ہمت کی تو لڑکے کو لاہور بھیج دیا مگرہاسٹل کے بجائے ایک ایسے اجنبی عزیز کے یہاں قیام کا فیصلہ کیا جاتا ہے جس سے رشتہ داری کی نوعیت معلوم کرنے کے لئےخاندانی شجرے کی ورق گردانی کرنا پڑتی ہے تاہم ہاسٹل پر اس کے گھر کو یہ کہہ کر ترجیح دی جاتی ہے کہ ”گھر پاکیزگی اور طہارت کا ایک کعبہ اور ہاسٹل گناہ ومعصیت کا دوزخ ہے“ ضمناً نفسیات کے اس پہلو پر روشنی پڑی کہ جذبات کو دبا کر تحت الشعور میں دھکیل دینا ان کو دُند مچانے کے لئے آزاد چھوڑ دینا اور ارتفاع میں مشکلیں حائل کرنایا ارتفاع سے محروم کر دینا ہے۔ پطرس کے الفاظ میں:
”اس سے تحصیل علم کا جو ایک ولولہ ہمارے دل میں اُٹھ رہا تھا وہ کچھ بیٹھ سا گیا۔ ہم نے سوچا ماموں لوگ (ماموں قسم کے لوگ؟) اپنی سرپرستی کے زعم میں والدین سے بھی زیادہ احتیاط برتیں گے۔ جس کا نتیجہ یہ ہوگا کہ ہمارے دماغی اور روحانی قوےٰ کو پھلنے پھولنے کا موقع نہ ملے گا اور تعلیم کا اصل مقصد فوت ہوجائے گا۔ چنانچہ وہی ہوا“۔
بعد ازاں اس ”وہی ہوا“ کی شرح ہے۔ امتحانات میں پےدر پے فیل ہونا، صلاحیتوں کی بےراہ روی اختیار کرنا۔ صاف گوئی اور راستبازی کاکج مج راستے اختیار کرنا۔ غسل خانے میں چھپ چھپ کر سگریٹ پینا۔ المختصر وہ آزادی وفراخی ووارفتگی نصیب نہ ہوئی جو تعلیم کا اصل مقصد ہے“۔
پطرس نے مسئلے کے اس پہلو کو ظریفانہ انداز میں اس حسن وخوبی سے وضاحت کی ہے کہ طبیعت عش عش کرتی ہے۔ تفصیل میں جانا مضمون کی لذتیت کو فنا کر دینا ہے۔ پڑھئے اور لطف اندوز ہوجائے۔
کتاب کا مقصد بھی غالباً فوت ہو جائے گا اس کے مضامین کی چیر پھاڑ کی گئی۔ کتاب انگریزی کے اس مقولے کی بہترین ترجمان ہے کہ مذاق کے پردے میں بہت سی سنجیدہ باتیں کہہ دی جاتی ہیں۔

He is best known for his humorous writings in Urdu literature.
Patras received his early education from Peshawar and in 1916 he moved from Islamia College Peshawar to join Government College, Lahore. After completing his Masters in English he was appointed as lecturer at the same institution.
Patras Bokhari left Government College, Lahore in 1925 to study at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, to complete a Tripos in English. Many years later, the Bokhari English Prize was established there in his honour.[2][3]
In 1927, he came back to Government College, Lahore, and as a Professor remained there till 1939. Before the formation of Pakistan in 1947, he was the Director General of All India Radio. Being a Professor of English Literature, he also served as the Principal of Government College, Lahore from 1947 to 1950. The Urdu poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Noon Meem Rashid, were among his students. After the formation of Pakistan, he served as the first permanent representative of Pakistan in the United Nations from 1951–1954. From 1954-1958 he remained as the Under Secretary of the UN, Head of Informon. He died during his diplomatic service and is buried in New York, USA.

A few days back when I first started this collection of short essays, I was mostly found rolling on the floor laughing in my room for no reason. Patras can pick up a very trite and boring topic (like the Geography of Lahore) and embellish it with such spices that one can't help reading it twice, thrice..or as many times as your literary tastes can take it. Doubtless to say, he is ranked among authors like Doughlas Adams and P.G.Wodehouse (though I'm not really sure if they were contemporaries). This book must be read by everyone who understands Urdu and good humour. Hats off to Bukhari for gifting Pakistan with such profound lasting literature !

۔ ۔ ۔ "رفتہ رفتہ مجھے اس فن میں کمال ہوگیا۔
جس روانی اور نفاست کے ساتھ ناخواندہ کتابوں پر گفتگو کر سکتا تھا اس پر میں خود حیران رہ جاتا تھا۔ صرف دو دن کے بعد میں سب کتابوں پر رائے زنی کر سکتا تھا"۔ ۔ ۔
پطرس کے مضامین میں ایک بہت بڑی خامی ہے جس کا احساس کتاب پڑھنے کے بعد ہوتا ہے اور وہ خامی ہے کتاب کا مختصر ہونا۔ مگر عمدہ کتاب کے صفحات کتنے ہونے چاہیئیں کہ تسلی بخش ہوں، یہ طے کرنا مشکل کام ہے۔
ایک اور خامی اس کتاب کی یہ ہے کہ آدھے سے زیادہ مضامین ٹیکسٹ بُک بورڈز کی مہربانیوں سے طلبہ کے نصاب میں داخل ہیں مگر وہ نصابی ضروریات کو پورا نہیں کرتے۔ وہ یوں کہ یہ مضامین دلچسپ ہیں جبکہ نصابی قواعد کی رُو سے انہیں بوجھل اور طلبہ کے لئے سوہان روح ہونا چاہیئے تھا مگر ایسا نہیں ہے۔ اب جو چیز اپنا بنیادی مقصد ہی پورا نہ کرے اس کون اچھا کہے گا۔
ایک اعتراض یہ ہے کہ اس کتاب میں زبان اتنی عام فہم ہے کہ ایک بچہ بھی سمجھ لے۔ جب کہ مشہور کتابوں کی روایت ہے کہ وہ عام لوگوں پر اپنے رموز نہیں کھولتیں، خواص پر اپنے مطالب آشکار کرتی ہیں۔ چیز خاص تو نہ رہی نا جب ہر عام اسے پڑھنے سمجھنے کا دعویٰ کرنے لگ جائے۔
اور آخری اعتراض یہ ہے کہ یہ کتاب مشہور ہے۔ بہت ہی مشہور! اور مشہور کتابیں نام بڑا رکھتیں ہیں مگر درشن چھوٹے دیتی ہیں۔ یہ کتاب اس ضمن میں بھی آپ کو مایوس کرتی ہے کہ آپ اسے پڑھتے ہیں اور داد دیے بغیر رہ نہیں سکتے۔ اب آپ ہی انصاف کریں کہ کیا مشہور کتاب کا کام ہے کہ وہ امیدوں پر پورا اترے!؟؟

This is an interesting, amazing and humorous read. I have enjoyed it a lot. Syed Ahmad Shah, commonly known as Patras Bukhari, the author of the book, was a well-known Urdu writer, humourist and Pakistani diplomat. He had served as the first Principal of Government College, Lahore after the independence of Pakistan from 1947-50. Due to his services, Government College, Lahore named their auditorium "Bokhari Auditorium" to honour him.
This book consists of eleven different topics , each with a unique and humorous story. The story I like the most in this book is مریدپورکاپیر (The Saint of Mareed Pur). Generally speaking, each story takes it's readers to a wonderful journey in the world of humours. I highly recommend this book to all the people who knows Urdu well.

Ohhh! For the first time, I read funny short stories in Urdu. Patras Bukhari's writing style had truly inspired me. He wrote simple boring stories in a way that a reader can't resist without laughing. In the whole book, I was laughing without a break that everyone sitting near me was staring like I am doing something very odd.

Title : The Essays of Patras
Patras Bokhari's literary fame rests on this slim compilation of humorous and satirical essays.It is a quick read.
I found it a mixed bag,although my expectations were higher for such an acclaimed book.I enjoyed parts of it,which were no doubt brilliant.
The conclusion of Mable and Me is hilarious.Studying in the Hostel and Getting up in the Morning are pretty good too.
But it is a brief compilation anyway and there are some essays which are rather ordinary.
So,it's not quite a five star book for me,though I wish Patras had written more.

A perfect treat for humor lovers.
Patras knows how to turn a boring subject into humorous content. I came to know Patras after reading “Hostel Me Parhna” in my FSC as a chapter and I remember how we were amused by his witty humor. I'm happy that I've completed this book and find all the other stories equally exceptional and chucklesome. Mebel or mai is my fav of all.
I recommend this book to everyone who loves creative humor and wants to laugh their heart out.

It was hilarious !
Even more due to the fact that an excerpt from this book was included in my urdu textbook at school and I had a lot of memories about how we mocked each other with the jokes in this book.
I am a big fan of Urdu humour. My favourites include works of Ibn-e-Insha, Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi, Col. Mohammad Khan and most of all Patras Bukhari. I probably read the excerpt in my texbook more than 15-20 times over the year and at that time I could remember it word by word.
Then I got hold of his book and treated it in the very same way.
I have a feeling that it might not be that popular with adults or those who have left student life long ago, because most of the book is devoted to making fun of hostel and college life.
It is undoubtedly a book to be treasured.
Even more due to the fact that an excerpt from this book was included in my urdu textbook at school and I had a lot of memories about how we mocked each other with the jokes in this book.
I am a big fan of Urdu humour. My favourites include works of Ibn-e-Insha, Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi, Col. Mohammad Khan and most of all Patras Bukhari. I probably read the excerpt in my texbook more than 15-20 times over the year and at that time I could remember it word by word.
Then I got hold of his book and treated it in the very same way.

Was first introduced to him by "Lahore Ka jugrafia" in first year. Didn't catch my interest then. Mainly because I was overthinking everything.
Decided to read more of his work and I am surprised by how much I liked him. His account on working women (however brief) was a little off putting in "akhbar main zaroorat hai" but his "Mabel aur main" was a quick save 😂.
I thoroughly enjoyed the wholesome depiction of married life from a married mans point of view. Was surprised that Patras made him cry because he missed his wife. Don't know if it was supposed to be funny or just him trying to humanize men showing emotions, either way, I loved it.

Patras Bukhari has set an amazing landmark in constituting humorous prose in Urdu literature. These essays contain various characters from everyday life; from a very dull student to a henpecked husband. I read these in middle school; and I still remember laughing out loud. It's been one hundred years since these essays came out; but still managing to make us laugh signifies it's strength and importance.

This is an interesting, clever, amazing, and humorous read. "Patras Kay Mazameen" is a small book consisting of only eleven stories with each story’s narrative distinctive and their freshness remains intact even after a century has passed. Reader will be able to relate many things to yourself, which makes the enjoyment of the stories even greater. But it is written in such a manner that the reader will laugh while reading every sentence and smile after every few lines.

I usually don't go for short stories in Urdu as compiled in a book but Patras Sahab was phenomenal. At times, I literally burst out laughing. The vocabulary was DIFFICULT. But worth the read.

An amazing & only piece of writing by Patras Bukhari. My first introduction with the writer was when i read the story 'Marhoom Ki yaad Mein'. It was extremely hilarious. This story forced me to grab this book and read it all!

Each one of them is written intellectually with a perfect balance of wit and humor; with the exception of "Anjaam-Bakhair", which is on a serious note. While reading, you keep expecting another amazing one-liner coming your way and Patras sb doesn't disappoint you in that. Though, it's difficult to choose but my favorite of the lot is "Marhoom ki yad men". Most of the stories involve the author and a friend-cum-headache named Mirza Sb. They focus on their friendship and the frustration/fun regarding the two musketeers' adventures.
I recommend it to everybody who can read & understand Urdu.

a very interesting collection of Patras work, it shows how humor could be treated with high intellect and aesthetic sense, one thing that is a sort of revelation for me that Ibn e Insha got his inspiration from this work for his own master piece "URDU KI AKHRI KITAB" there is an essay with a same title and format Insha picked the theme and went on to write an highly interesting political satire . this collection also includes a critique on a book "GHUNCHA E TABASSUM" by Tamkeen Kazmi which is a treat in itself while another piece is a rebuttal on a criticism done of "Anarlkali" by some Mr. Mukhlis. there is a commentary by Patras on a literary cleavage between writers of Urdu from UP and Punjab. In all it is a must read for Urdu lovers

Patras has a unique sense of humour. His witty remarks, at things we don't usually give much heed to are exceptional. Hiss essays on Lahore and dogs are legendary. There are a couple of essays I did not enjoy though, hence four stars.

The level of humor is much sophisticated, cultural and original as compared to what we have to endure now a days. Every story is outclass but "Marhoom ki yaad mein" snatched the crown from others. Never laughed like this for a long time.

Funny here and there, but it can get tedious at times. The Urdu is what really makes this book special and I doubt any other language can do it justice.
