I'll be honest. I had a much harder time reading this installment of the Shorten Chronicles. What started as an endearing time travel saga has turned into something else all together.

**Spoilers**

Now we are looking at supernatural powers, aliens, social experiments. And layers and layers of indecision. Sophie keeps waffling between the two boys, just make a decision and stick with it. Charlotte is now a super dog who can fully understand English and has a normal human lifespan which is odd and a bit convenient. The lift is actually a piece of software that allows time travel if you have the correct genes.

too much, too much. I likely will read the final installment purely for closure.

Rosalind Tate has written another fantastic sequel!

As Sophie and Hugo try to find home, Freddie follows. And when he finds something he doesn't like his anger sends them back to a dangerous alternate Georgian medieval.

We learn a lot about the travelling in this book, and the love triangle deepens! With a shock ending.

Excited to see where they end up next.

Good continuation of the story. There were choices the characters made that definitely frustrated me, but that isnjust a sign of realistic writing! Can't wait for the next book to come out.

Here’s a review that says most of what I’d say (full of spoilers):
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

While the original story started off a bit too convenient to all involved, it was sweet and both men were likable (even with Freddie's societal upbringing) - in fact, I liked them better than Sophie for the most part.

Also, now I need to comment on things I’d held in on previous books: Why is Sophie putting a coat on a freakin’ doodle? It was bad enough that Sophie had a badly behaved doodle as a fake service dog, but if there is one thing an ungroomed doodle doesn’t need, it is clothes on top of its matted pelt. Sophie also has “done her research” on doodles and knows they were originally bred as an experiment for hypoallergenic guide dogs, but doesn’t know that was an utter failure (that the original breeder calls the biggest regret of his life) since the vast majority aren’t remotely non-shedding. She also feeds the dog a vegetarian food, but anyone with any canine knowledge would know how stupid that is – but at least it won’t necessarily kill a dog like it would a cat.

Unlike the linked review above, I doubt I’ll continue.

This time travel adventure is just too weird to fathom. After Freddy comes though the portal (lift), he locates Hugh and Sophie and finds out she has betrayed him and is now Hugh’s lover. He wants to go back in time but his thoughts are not in order and he wishes for the worst. The lift takes them to 13th century Georgian Russia. Mongolian raiders are stampeding the countryside. Quite coincidentally, Hugh just happens to know Russian! Peculiar things abound. Sophie and Freddy have amazing strength. Sophie is seen as a goddess and has the ability to kill men by boiling their blood. It really gets weird when they come across Nala, a fellow time traveler who is observing this area for anthropological reasons. She has some fancy pieces of equipment that allow temporary invisibility. Everyone is trying to kill them. However, Nala explains more about the portal and how it works. You have to call for Janus and it will appear. Apparently he is a god but sentient and able to talk to them. Charlotte, the dog, can now understand human speech and can communicate mentally with Nala who gives her a longer life span. Sophie and Freddy end up in a very deep near pit and suffer from hunger and cold for four days while Hugh and Charlotte go looking for help. In a moment of passion Freddy and Sophie make love. When she is hit by a poison arrow, they summon the portal and take Sophie to 21st century for medical intervention.
Once, back in the present time, Sophie is hospitalized and it is discovers that she is pregnant. Wow. A lot of weird stuff in this book.

Charlotte the labradoodle has to adapt fast in this book, and she physically changes. Becomes fiercer and wise and more like a wolf!

Strayed to much from the the 1st 2 books. Went too fantasy. Not enough detail about romance.

Exile is very different from the first two books in the series in that Stranded and Escape took place in a alternate past that was more proper and had a certain civility restraining the more uncouth elements even where there were still dangers foreign to the modern world Sophie came from. Exile takes Sophie, her faithful dog Charlotte, and her complicated loves Hugo and Freddy into a world that is dangerous, wild and unrestrained. Sophie's actions are colored by the world she is in and that makes this a much darker, more dangerous, more passionate book than the previous two. It feels like it is for a slightly older audience maybe.

There were some scenes from Escape especially that hint at Sophie's capacity for what happened in this book, but it was still hard to watch her go down the path she chose. Even allowing for her desperation, her action were extreme and this is addressed in the book. There is also quite a bit more revealed about the nature of the elevator and its history. And then that polarizing twist at the end that just sends everything into a tailspin! Huge mess for the next book to deal with!

I enjoyed this book, it was a fast, entertaining read with some wicked twists, but it was quite outside of what I expected based on the previous two books and I think that might cause some mixed reactions especially as the aftermath of Sophie's choices are not really dealt with in this book. This just throws a huge wrench in the works of who you thought the characters were and where the plot was going like a seriously huge now I have to rethink all those scenes from the previous two books. It's a good read, but unsettling - and it works with everything that came before.

Exile (The Shorten Chronicles) #3 by author Rosalind Tate
Review - by Shirley Weidner 9-18-22

I received a copy of this book from the author in advance of publication. This is my honest review.

You never know what will happen when our heroine, Sophie Arundel, steps into the lift near a manor house in an alternate 1925 England. The lift takes Sophie, her friends Hugo and Freddy, (the host from the manor house) to a parallel universe in the 13th century. Sophie’s faithful dog, Charlotte accompanies them and has some superpowers!

The three friends encounter a large, barbaric, medieval army in Russia and learn of a Red Goddess and meet an evil Queen. None of the encounters are very friendly. There are surprises and narrow escapes along the way for the friends whose relationships are complicated and tested.

A crazy adventure that I devoured, because I read it is a very short time and really enjoyed it!

Great continuation of the story

So much DRAMA!!! A lot has happened here, both with the story itself and with the love triangle. Freddy showing up in the present day to surprise Hugo and Sophie has thrown a massive wrench into their blossoming love affair and when he finds out, he is not happy! After a return trip to Shorten goes horribly wrong, the three of them are dealing with a lot of craziness on the path back to the lift. One thing I’m on the fence about (which is hard to discuss if I want to avoid spoilers!) regarding the situation at the end of the book, is whether the “guilty” party is Freddy or Hugo since based on events that happened after they arrived in the past either one could be responsible. Hmmmm….can’t wait to see what will happen next!

A thrilling, high stakes ride!

When reluctant time-traveller Sophie Arundel embarks on a rescue mission, she’s plunged into terrible danger – and her growing understanding of the mysterious lift and its workings only increases the peril. As the tension builds, Sophie must draw on all her resourcefulness to survive in a strange and hostile world. Faced with tough, life-changing decisions, she finds unexpected inner strength – but there is a price to pay. The stakes are higher than ever…
Exile is a real page-turner that hooked me from the start.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

Rosalind Tate excels herself in this third book in the Shorten Chronicles series. There is tension between the main male characters. This leads to conflict for Sophie who loves both boys but in different ways.

This book has excitement, thrills, danger and love. What more could you ask for in a story?

I have read this whole trilogy now with mixed reviews. I felt the characters had no chemistry with all they’ve been through. But now that I’ve finished, I find I miss them all. I loved the time travel and the science behind it. And of course I adored Charlotte the dog. I will probably finish the rest of the books as she writes them.

3 1/2 Stars: This novel was all over the place and I didn’t particularly like the nuances that they faced in their next time jump. She’s a good writer and certainly imaginative, but I missed the first book’s charm. So this novel in the series was just meh. 🫤
