Rate this book
Gideon "Eagle" Carpenter is used to rolling with the punches life has thrown at him. It's the only thing that's kept him alive. He and his team of GhostWalkers have seen and experienced it all. He does his best to live with all the sins written on his soul. Then he hears the laughter of a woman with the ability to erase--even for a few previous moments--the darkness of his past.

Laurel "Rory" Chappel has always been a nomad. She's accustomed to taking care of herself, despite the physical challenges she lives with. She thinks she's too weak to find real love, but that doesn't stop her interest in Gideon from turning into a full-on addiction. He's all rough edges and danger contrasted with a tenderness that makes her feel safe. Still, after a life spent in motion, she's not sure she knows how to stay in one place.

A bit different from the.norm.

There's no Whitney in the background, no terrorists, no secret cabal conspiring against the ghostwalkers this time around. Gideon from the ghostwalker team based in San Francisco has been severely injured in a mission and is recovering slowly at home. He now.owns one of the warehouses next to where Jamie and Mack own theirs (with the rest of the team.spread.out around them) Gideon is used to being on his own a lot, as the teams sniper he was usually apart from the.action and his personality has always been that of a loner, he always needs his me time. So Gideon is home recovering frustrated at the limitations this places on him when he hears a woman's laughter. It's coming from a fair distance and its.only down to the.genetic enhancement s that he is able to.connect with the woman. Rory, works in a bar and lives in an apartment building close by she has lived an unusual life. With no family and no close friends Rory trained as a bartender so she would be able to.work anywhere and she does her ambition is to travel all across America stopping when she needs to (to earn money) and then moving on she never stays anywhere longer than a few months. Gideon (at first) considers Rory may be a plant sent by Whitney after all her background does zeta off several red flags. The lack of family, the constant travelling and no close relationships but after several of the.team initiate contact via the bar Rory works in that belief is discarded leaving Gideon free to pursue her for himself,..........................But what will Rory do if she ever finds.out Gideon ever doubted her...... Then things take an unexpected turn, someone is murdered in Rory's apartment building and the.police act like they suspect Rory of being involved the very same same things that bothered the ghostwalkers also bother the.police...........

I received an ARC copy in exchange for a honest review.

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.

Introduction
Ghostly Game is book 19 in the Ghostwalker series. And in this book we get taken back to the streets of San Francisco in California but we also get something a bit different than I was expected. This is more moderate paced in comparison to the other books in the series I feel like. It felt closer to solving a mystery than lots of action packed scenes that we are used to with this series. I found it to be a fascinating story, even if I had a few issues, but it was still a solid Christine Feehan book that delivered in aspects that we are used to from this author. I really loved the build up of the romance and character development was on point.

Summary
Gideon "Eagle" is slowly recovering from an injury protecting one of his closest friends. But he is drawn to a woman's laughter that intrigues him, a voice that speaks of song and passion. And he is determined to find her and why she intrigues him so much. Laurel "Rory" has always been a bit of a lone wolf, on the run, struggling with her Asthma, and having trust issues. But now she is settled in California, and has made some strong female friends. And when she meets Gideon, she knows that there is something that she can trust about him. But there are secrets in her past, and their instincts may cause some hurt in the relationship and their love will be tested in ways neither expect...

My Outlook
Ghostly Game is a solid installment of the series. I personally have really enjoyed the series but it can be a hit or miss sometimes. Don't get me wrong, Christine Feehan, is QUEEN!! But I ocassionally have a hard time connecting to the books in this series especially. But from the very beginning of this one I was completely fascinated by this one here. And I just loved the instant connection between Gideon and Rory. It was so on point. I also loved seeing them connect in such a trusting way. We also get to see the friendships on both sides. I loved returning to the Ghostwalkers in San Francisco, they are such a fun group to see together.

I really enjoyed the romance as a whole, the way in which Gideon and Rory connect was so charming and achingly sweet. Rarely are they this sweet in this series, but it was so beautifully captured in only the ways that Feehan can do it. But I think my issue was the conflict that rises in the relationship. I just didn't care for how long it was dragged out to be honest. I also felt like the heroine was making a mountain out of a molehill. I did enjoy seeing her background come to the light though and the realization of who she really is and how she connects to the original girls captured by Dr. Whitney so fascinating. The ending was satisfying though and left me content and happy. Definitely eager to see what she delivers for the next installment.

Overall View
I found Ghostly Game to be an poignant and full of charm romance that keeps you on the edge but also captures the sweetness of the heart!

Rory and Gideon meet while she's working as a bartender in a pub. She keeps to herself, doesn't go out with anyone and has a few close friends she hangs out with. Gideon is a GhostWalker, these people have psychic abilities and have been enhanced with other abilities so they can go on special assignments, but he's also a really nice guy. When they first meet, Gideon is still recovering from some gunshot wounds he got while on a mission and Rory can tell he's in pain but she figures he's been in a car accident or something. These two start talking after Gideon comes to the pub she works at and he asks her out and surprisingly she says yes.

Rory hasn't been getting close to a lot of people and doesn't lay down ties for too long. Once she gets bored in a place or feels the need to move on, she does. She's been moving from place to place for years. But the place she's in now almost feels like home to her. She likes her job, her friends and feels good where she's at.

When Rory realizes that she feels safe with Gideon and they seem to like some of the same things, she agrees to go on another date but Gideon's teammates show up and let him know she might be in danger, which puts him on edge. Gideon is a GhostWalker and so is his team mates. He had a rough childhood but now he and his team help people. Rory doesn't seem like a GhostWalker but because he's so instantly attracted to her and they seem to click together so fast, he's wary that she either is a spy or doesn't know she's a GhostWalker.

When it looks like someone is after Rory, Gideon and his team investigate it and find out who is putting her in danger. Secrets start to unravel and come to light. I didn't guess who the bad guys were until it was revealed so it was a surprise to me which was great. I felt bad for Rory as things started to make more sense and the secrets were revealed. But Gideon and his team were right there with her to help which was great. I've loved this series but I think this book is actually one of my favorites so far. Gideon and Rory's romance was a slow burn even though they felt an instant attraction, they took things slow because neither one of them trusted that the other was as good as they seemed. This was great fun.

Disclosure: I was sent an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m sorry. I love feehan books and have been a fan for years. I keep buying her books hoping they will be as good as when she first started writing them. And they just continue to disappoint. This book isn’t worth 15$. The whole book is mainly side plot and the main character barely gets to know the team at all. That team was always my favorite and waiting so long for her to touch back on them. And it’s just boring side plot. And the mains bone one time. Like?? Spice was virtually non existent. Romance angle ? barely.

Probably more like 3.5 Stars. This is an extremely slow burn book which is definitely a change for this author. I didn’t mind it but I’m not really a slow burn person so not my favourite. Also thought the relationship drama was way to drawn out. But the mystery was good, I was anxious to see what would happen next. Also all the supporting characters, especially Rory’s group of friends were really great, I enjoyed the normalcy of the scenes with them just hanging out, we don’t get that very often in these books.

Rory Chappel is a nomad. She moves from city to city, working as a bartender, but not making any real connections with anyone. That changes when she lands in San Francisco. Not only does she meet a great group of women at her apartment complex, but that’s where she meets Gideon Carpenter. To Rory, Gideon seems too good to be true. He’s attentive & attractive among other things. Rory is used to being on her own, so having so many people care about what happens to her in such a short amount of time throws her off her game. She usually only stays in a city for a few months, then she moves on. She’s not exactly running from anything, she just moves when the urge strikes. It’s not going to be so easy to leave San Francisco. So she starts wondering if she should plant some roots.

Gideon Carpenter is a GhostWalker. Before that, he was an abused child that grew up in a violent household. There are decisions that Gideon made in his life that he regrets to this day. When he first hears Rory’s laughter, he knows he has to find her. When he does find her, she takes his breath away. Rory doesn’t put off the vibe that most GhostWalkers do, but he’s certain that she is a GhostWalker. That would be the only thing that would explain the instant & irresistible attraction he has to her. Then he goes and fucks everything up by telling his team her secrets. It wasn’t that he wanted to tell them, but above all, Gideon is a protector.

This book was unlike any Christine Feehan book that I’ve read in the past. This book was based more on emotion than sex. I don’t think the sex actually happened until about 90% into the book. I was okay with that because at times, Christine Feehan overdoes it with the physical. Honestly, I’m still a little confused about the plot. There was a whole suspense aspect that was weird. Like it didn’t fit into what I’m used to in a GhostWalker novel. Although, that might have ended up being a good thing. This is one of the few series that I still read by Christine Feehan & I plan on continuing with it. It’s interesting & hot. This world that she has created is pretty amazing.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Be The Real Deal. Come To Me Because You Honestly See Me And I Matter To You."

Gideon "Eagle" Carpenter is healing at home after a rescue mission went bad that almost cost him his life. Seeing the massacre of families has brought back the terrible memories of his childhood. Gideon, trying to meditate and deal with his memories hears a woman's soft laughter and sends out a psychic lure to find her working in a bar and makes plans to meet her, because for a few minutes she brought him relief from the darkness of his life.

Laurel "Rory" Chappel, bartender, and nomad likes to travel and enjoys being outdoors feels a strong compulsion to travel to the San Francisco Wharf where she gets a job as bartender, rents an apartment and starts making friends. But, because of her weak lungs, being forced to use a breathing machine and inhaler Laurel feels like she's unlovable and no man will want her. Laurel knows she'll have to leave her job and friends soon. While visiting with her neighbors an injured cop stumbles in and tells the women to run before he dies. Suspicious activities begins to happen as well as the women's apartments being broken into and search. It's obvious at this point someone thinks the women have something that the person is willingly to kill for.

Gideon and Laurel meet and they both feel strong psychic, emotional as well as physical chemistry, something neither can act on because of their health issues. Gideon slowly realizes that Laurel's a Ghostwalker and they've been paired. Why is Laurels psychic energy so low? Did Whitney send her to kidnap Kane and Rose son, Sabastian and destroy Team#3? Why doesn't Laurel have memories of her childhood?

As Gideon and Laurels relationship grows and she confides her past with Gideon, he's torn. Gideon's honored bond to protect his team who are family to him and shares Laurels secrets. Laurel walks away feeling betrayed. Time is running out for Laurel as all eyes are on her and attacks against her increase. Will Gideon be able to repair his relationship with Laurel or will he be to late and lose her forever.

Thank you Berkley Romance for my book.

Even though this is the 19th book in the series, I have to say I wasn’t lost or confused while reading. The main character Rory has asthma which I have as well and it was nice to see it portrayed authentically. I loved the theme of found family in the story as both Rory and Gideon had tough childhoods. This story is on the slower side and I felt like the action parts were rushed at the end. Overall, I did enjoy the story and will be looking forward to the next book. Hopefully it will be about Javier?!

ghostly gameGhostly Game by Christine Feehan is book 19 in the series. I haven't read them all-I have sort of hopped around throughout the series and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment! This book is the story of Rory and Gideon.

Rory lived sort of a nomadic life and was very "lone wolf"-ish. She struggled with her health and so she kind of just shut people out. Now that she is settled in San Francisco, she builds up some friends and meets Gideon. These two have that instant spark, but both are wary. Gideon is a GhostWalker and worries that Rory might be a spy. However, it could be that she doesn't know she is a GhostWalker. Either way, he is skep. However, his team investigates and keeps her out of danger, so he doesn't just bail on her. But, this really puts their relationship on the back burner in a sense. When I tell you this is slow burn, I mean it. Its like Mariana Zapata slow. However, the mystery is really good. You find out bits and pieces of Rory's life as the team digs and I really felt like I didn't know where it all was going (in a good way).

Ghostly Game felt different from other GhostWalker books I have read. Now, as I said, I skip around, but this one was slower. I'm still not sure how I feel about that. I don't really like the super slow burns, but this reads more like a mystery that happens to have a romance. Not that the romance is a side story, but it just isn't as prominent as I usually get from Feehan. Also, there is some relationship drama, and I'm really not a fan of miscommunication/lack of communication and I felt that a bit. However, the story was really good!

Well, at least they had chemistry. You'd be surprised how many authors think they can get away with writing spicy scenes between characters who don't even have chemistry... but these two did. And we love a redhead.

Most of the actual plot/action took place in the past or offscreen, though. I didn't realize this was one of the latter books in a long series when I picked it up on a whim at the library, but I get the strong impression the first books were way more exciting.

I have a hypothesis that the fated mates trope is popular mainly because it speaks to our deep seated Christian cultural conditioning about sex and desire being "dirty," but see, it's not dirty if it's FATED. And anyway they're gonna be together FOREVER--they're practically MARRIED. Even your mother couldn't object.

Ghostly Game returns the reader to San Francisco and with Ghostwalker Team Three.

The heroine, Laurel aka Rory is an enigmatic yet powerful and intelligent woman. She is one of the diabolical Peter Whitney’s orphaned girls whom the sociopathic scientist bought for their latent psychic ability to be exploited by Whitney; many of these girls were tossed away after being tortured and abused.

The hero, Gideon, like most of his team, found family as orphaned or street children who survived in the streets and as adults, the makes ended up enhanced by Whitney for their psychic abilities, as well as additional DNA enhancements unbeknownst to them at the time.

Gideon and Rory’s meeting was electric wherein Gideon realized Rory was chemically paired to him by his reaction to her. Rory had been an orphan for years, wondering the States in her own without family or friends and a life debilitating illness , asthmatic lungs.

Rory landed in S.F., found not only work as a bartender but also kinship with a group of women friends who lived in the same building. But there were a dangerous element of corrupt men hiding out in the building as well as several dirty cops which put Rory and her friends in the midst of several grisly murders.

I loved that this story, like the last book, was primarily plot and character focused; no sex scenes to slow down the story but lots of intimate moments as Rory and Gideon grew into their relationship.

The Ghostwalkers are my favorite characters/series of Christine Feehan’s extraordinary worlds because the stories are packed with action, suspense, supernatural elements, and characters the have formed strong bonds of friendship and family. With each new book, the series gets even better. Ghostly Game is an exciting romantic thriller and breath of fresh air. Highly recommended!

A Romantic Suspense that keeps secrets from characters and readers. Not just from the murder mystery they find themselves embroiled in but the mystery of the Laurel, the FMC, Stirring curiosity and conflict. It had my eyes growing big as they, as I, tried to figure them out! Second guessing within the story and myself, and turning pages to get the information...Love when a title fits in a figurative and literal way for the Characters! Especially the way it does in this one! It’s really an awesome read!

A hero haunted by ghosts of his past, the self imposed guilt he carries for actions he took and didn’t take then. Then there’s the dangers from Dr Whitney always on their minds, now, worrying about his plotting, deception … Gideon is bound to his Team, his family, those who helped him survive from childhood, those he’d give everything for, protect. Then he finds her, a woman who brings him peace, she’s a mystery and as he learns answers about her more questions arise he needs to resolve his doubts and follow his loyalty…but would he sacrifice the love he’s come to feel for her, the woman who makes him feel alive.

A heroine haunted by a ghost from her past, whose whispers on the edge of her memory wake guilt and vulnerabilities in her, keep her isolated, ready to move on. Laurel struggles against these urges as she final finds a friendship, work, and a connection with a man that makes her want a future, to have a home. Vulnerabilities, doubts about the past she can’t remember, build as dead bodies start showing up, suspicion points at her…and then Gideon betrays the trust she’s given him and builds on her guilt and doubts, the whispers grow… Friendships help her gather strength to believe in herself. But the danger, the killer has targeted her and the only way to be safe is Gideon, the man she pushed away.

What a great story for Gideon and Laurel! Are you ready to learn about the Ghosts of their pasts, the conflicts these characters face that challenge trust in themselves and each other? The mysteries they are embroiled in? How will the bond, the loyalty amongst GhostWalkers play a roll in their happily ever after? This book answers all of this in such a gripping way, has the reader wondering at the truth, along with jaw-dropping revelations and oh nos! turning pages to find out more, and of course those, oh my dreamy sigh moments… This is a great addition to the series and one I recommend.

This one felt a little bit different from other Ghostwalker books. You knew Gideon was a Ghostwalker, but you weren't sure about Rory. There were lots of clues, but there were also things about Rory that made it seem like she was just a normal person. It made seeing why Gideon and the others were wary of her easy.

I loved how Rory was with her friends and their kids, she just radiated goodness. I hated that her past had been so nomadic, she was someone who should have had a big family and a place to really settle into. It was great that by the end of the book she had both, but getting there was hard.

I liked the relationship that she built with Gideon, but hated how it got blown apart and could see both sides to things. However when danger showed up, I was glad that Rory was able to trust Gideon enough to help her and her friends.

This is a different pace than her other Ghostwalker novels and I really liked it. Laurel "Rory" Chappell does not know she is a Ghostwalker. She has shielded herself from everything since she was a child and she has no memory of being an orphan or anything. She moves to San Francisco and tends bar and meets Gideon Carpenter who is a Ghostwalker as are his team. None of them get any vibe from Rory that she is anything other than a bartender with breathing issues and trust issues. The more time Gideon spends with her the tighter he is bound to her and he begins to suspect she is indeed more than she seems. When things start happening in the apartment building Rory lives in and the cops come calling all the time Gideon and his team take action to save Rory and her friends why whatever means needed.

This was much better than the last one. Honestly, the last one was so bad, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to try to read this one. However, I’ve enjoyed so many Feehan books over the years, I decided to give it a shot. And I’m glad I did. The fmc is a realistic, likable character and the mmc isn’t a giant douche dipping into coercion. The story was also interesting, some of the last few have felt very procedural, but this one had some new material, different stakes. It reminded me why I liked this series to begin with, although Gideon is nicer and more realistic than most of the other men.

I enjoy Feehan's world building in all of her various series. This story of Gideon and Rory was particularly harrowing, what childhoods they each had.
What I most enjoyed about the plot is that it had a more realistic villain than usual. I will continue reading her books as long as she keeps writing.

I just loved this book. Again, Christine manages another GhostWalker that keeps you riveted to your seat. I can't pick a favorite GhostWalker team. This team grabs your heartstrings and pulls them tight. I love Gideon and Rory, both are so special. Great story to lose yourself in. Be sure you have plenty of time to read because you won't want to put it down.

An ok escape.

Likes - the relationship development was interesting (at least until the last quarter of the book). The theme of the ghostwalkers was fun. And I enjoyed her character (bartender, traveler, etc), at least until the end.

Mehs - the male character could have been the same guy in hundreds of other stories. Her character at the end seemed to morph into a naive and giggling girlfriend (ugh). There could have been more action with the rest of the ghostwalker team.

I loved this book. The characters are so lost and their pasts are so tragic that following their journey to be together was amazing. I couldn’t put the book down not even once. I am hoping that in some future book in this series gives us an update on these two.

I believe this is my favorite Ghostwalker installment. I immediately liked them both and understood their reactions to each other and the danger around them. Rory’s past, though forgotten, caused her nightmares and made her afraid to trust. Gideon has many demons from his past as well, yet they help each other break open their shells and find love. The romance was sweet, yet turbulent..I loved it. I didn’t realize until I finished that this book was not as steamy as Ms. Feehan’s usual style. I didn’t miss it at all. It flowed smoothly and believably. The storyline was almost twofold. Separate mysteries swirling around with a lot of drama and danger. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I enjoyed it all.

Meh, again I can’t believe the change in tone from her earlier books. This one had no fire, no sex, no nothing. The story was interesting enough but the relationship fizzled for me. Maybe she should try a new ghost writer ( ? A new ghost title) and get back to basics of love, sex and rock and roll.

Not what I expected

This one seemed off. I'm disappointed it didn't feel like the others. When I first started reading it I wondered if it was really written by Feehan. It was kind of boring and while I love a smexy book with smexy scenes we went the whole way through with nothing just to have her throw in one at the literal end. Like... Oops, I couldn't find a good place to stick this in earlier so here it is! Hopefully the next one will be back on track. Feehan used to be one of my favorite authors but lately her books just aren't measuring up.

I wanted a better story. this book does not have the feel of a CF book. This book is very tame. the story felt disjointed. the four guys who just show up in the apts? huh? the women all being buddy buddy and these friendships were only 4 months or so along? I wanted a better story for team 3.
