Setting Limits

Rate this book
Have you ever been the villain of the good girl’s story?

That’s the role I find myself in. After giving my best friend Shay, and brother Lochlyn, the ultimatum of a lifetime, I’m left to pick up the pieces of their relationship. The one I broke.

Somebody like me – selfish and conceited Chelsea – doesn’t deserve redemption. It’s what I tell myself as I start to fall for the one person I definitely shouldn’t: My brother’s best friend.

It’s bad enough that the chemistry is on fire; his brilliant good looks don’t make it any easier.

Maybe I’m just a hopeless hypocrite and have jinxed myself with a love I can’t pursue, or worse, one that I’m not even worthy of.

Should I be the one setting limits before I receive an ultimatum of my own?

Setting Limits is an adult romance novel, intended for audiences 18 and older. Content warnings include strong language, explicit sexual scenes, mature situations, alcohol use, and mentions of abandonment.

What can I say? This is another hit for Shayna Astor.

After reading Off Limits and that being your introduction to Chelsea, you may be like most people and find that she seems to be generally unlikable and quite frankly undeserving of a friend such as Shay.

Setting Limits pulled a lot of emotions out of me and all of them good! First off, I didn't read Shay and Locklyn's book, so I didn't have the connection to them, only to Chelsea. While Chelsea acted selfishly in the beginning of the book, I do think she was fair to react that way, especially considering how Locklyn and Shay were written in this book. Besides one night a week, where Shay was always in a terrible or sad mood, Chelsea really did lose her best friend and I don't think Shay or Locklyn truly realized that or was willing to see things through her point of view when her and Wes were struggling.

Wes is an absolute sweetheart who is perfect for Chelsea. I loved them together, and their relationship was paced wonderfully throughout the book. I also loved how Wes seemed to understand Chelsea much better than either Shay or Locklyn because he listened to her fears before reacting.

I do think this book focused a little too much on Shay and Locklyn, almost as if Chelsea fixated on it. However, I also know that Chelsea's mindset around their relationship makes sense from her trauma.

If you can't tell by now, I am fully team Chelsea and loved her throughout the book even when she was acting at her best!

Have you read off limits? Cause if you have then you will understand parts we didn’t get to see from our dear Chelsea. & if you haven’t well hold on girlfriend and let’s start from the top. It will make this book worth reading even more or if you can’t wait then dive in. You will still enjoy it.

After learning what we do about Chelsea, it makes so much sense. But overall so relatable. I could understand why she feels the way she does. The internal turmoil we have sometimes with ourselves. & all we want is that special someone to help us through it.

But hold on, who is that? hello Weston. Funny? Check. Handsome? Check. Caring? Check. Spicy & dominating? Check! Do not let this sweet face fool you ladies this man has your panties dropping in a matter of seconds. He takes control and makes you forget everything else in the world. Put Chels & Wes together, BAM! Everything falls into place. Makes you want to find your own Weston to remind you of your true value. I just absolutely loved this book. & as always no doubt with Shayna, I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with the story & seeing familiar faces. Can’t wait to continue the journey.

I really enjoyed this book, and all the drama contained within its pages. Chelsea is a girl with quite a bit of unresolved emotional baggage, which leads her to back her brother and best friend into a corner that hurts everyone involved. After working hard to pick up the pieces, she’s left by herself to really think about who she is and what she’s done in her life up until this point. In her solitude, she starts hanging out with Wes—her brother’s best friend.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Wes and Chelsea, and how he treated her like a queen but also wasn’t scared to get rough in the bedroom. It made me instantly fall for him and want their relationship to work out. While I found Chelsea’s internal monologues to be repetitive and slightly annoying, I think it’s also an accurate portrayal of overthinking and what experiencing guilt over one’s actions can really be like… rumination is a bitch.

I highly recommend this book for fans of spicy contemporary romances, and I can’t wait to read the next book! I received an ARC of this book from Shayna, and this is my honest review.

So I read book 1 and love it. You don't need to read book 1 to understand this book. But I loved loch and shay and I even like Chels and Wes. However Loch and Shay will always have a place in my heart.

Throughout the story I couldn't stop reading. I loved the book from cover to cover. I love the romance. Having me on the edge of seat. Me wanting more. Brother's best friend. Everything. The chemistry between them two was amazing. Guess what could happen. What will they say had me on the edge. Now I can't wait for next book of this amazing series.

If you are looking for a book that has everything then this book is for you.

This can definitely be read as a standalone, but gives so much more to the story of you have already read Off Limits!

We get to see an entirely other side to Chelsea and get more layers as to why she behaves the way she does. This heroine does tend to be whinny and has a difficult time letting things go, but when she does....pure bliss awaits her!

Wes, Wes, Wes..... Shayna captured the absolute perfect book boyfriend with this character!!! You will be swooning from start to finish with his character and this book!!

This story follows Chelsea and Weston we were introduced to them in Shay and Lochlyns story. Chelsea is Lochlyns sister and Shays best friend. This story picks up where the last concludes but follows the romance between Chelsea and Weston. He is her brother best friend but he knew for a while that he was drawn to Chelsea. She is packed full issues that stem back to her parents abandoning them to raise their selves so she ultimately thinks everyone will leave her. Of course this does eventually happen but luckily things get back on track when Weston comes back for her since he knows he can’t make it without her. Story ends with an HEA.

Chelsea kind of broke my heart. She is so used to everyone leaving her, that first she tries to sabotage her brothers relationship. Then she tries to sabotage her own, even though Wes was the best guy for her. I absolutely LOVED Wes.

Another amazing emotional rollercoaster. I highly recommend reading this especially if you liked the first one, this is book two. It focuses on Shay and Locklyn in this book. It does have Wes and Chelsea in it too. I loved seeing them all develop more in this book. I don’t want to give away anything in this book really, so I really do recommend reading it. I really do on some level feel connected to Chelsea, the way she feels but also kinda connected to Shay as well.

Well- I liked this book more than I expected I would - but I’m gonna be honest. I thought that Shay and Lochlyn were a little on the whiny side and a little oblivious to just how much Chelsea was suffering. I feel like they played the victim and expected Chelsea to read their minds on how they were feeling about everything. It also felt like this was a “Everything Chelsea has ever done wrong” kind of book. I cried for Chelsea, because that poor girl was suffering and her brother and her best friend were too wrapped up in each other to see that. This wasn’t for one chapter, but for several.
.
Ultimately this book showed that sometimes a girl just wants her brother and her best friend, not her brother and his girlfriend. She wants one on one time and doesn’t want to feel abandoned. I felt how lonely she was and I am so glad that she finally got someone in her corner to fight. For her brother being so resentful- he sure did abandon her when it almost felt like she was getting ready to harm herself several times.
.
But in comes sweet Wes. Wes absolutely knocked it out of the park with his domineering alpha male act, and his absolute adoration for his sweetness. He really showed Chelsea how loved she was and how he would do anything to see her smile. He also showed her that people come back.
.
I could not give this book five stars only because I felt like that Shay and Lochlyn needed someone to put them in their place, and to stop berating Chelsea. My best friend loves me and would never say some of the stuff that Shay said- boyfriend/brother or not. I would recommend reading this book to anyone who needs a cry or to remember how blessed they are with their family. Bravo to Ms. Astor!

- this is the second book of the limits series and revolves around Chelsea and Wes. I definitely want to say I recommend reading the first book then going into this one. It gives you the background of Chelsea and why she was the way she was. I wasn’t her biggest fan in Off Limits. I absolutely hated how she was towards Shay and Lochlan. She issued the ultimatum to her best friend and brother and ultimately ended their relationship because of this. So happy it worked out and they got back together in the end. But anyways she also almost missed out on Wes because of her actions and he was so good to and for her. I loved the book mainly for Wes but Chelsea did end up growing on me after awhile!!!

*I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review*

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Setting Limits is said to be a standalone in the same world as the previous book Off Limits. However, after reading this book I would say it would be best to read book 1 as book 2 picks up right where it ends and it makes a lot more sense than going into Setting Limits “blind”.

I do want to say that if you read book one you know that Shayna put a note in saying the main character is annoying at first and that is on purpose. Shayna did that again in book 2 so if you’re easily annoyed or can’t get past certain things this may not be the book for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this store and how Chelsea and Weston’s relationship progressed through the story. I was rooting for them. They are cute together and with Weston she learns a lot about herself and is learning who she is and what boundaries she needs to have as well as what boundaries she needs to respect with other people.

I do have to say in the book is seemed like Chelsea was constantly bringing up what she did in book one and she couldn’t let it go. As the reader I couldn’t tell if that was on purpose as the author said Chelsea would be annoying to some or what but I did feel it was a little redundant and went on for a tad too long but i still enjoyed the series.

I cannot wait to read the next book in this world and thank you again Shayna for this wonderful world.

You should definitely read Off Limits before you jump into this. I do not feel like you can read this as a stand alone, because of how connected the characters from Off Limits are in this book. This book was a lot to take in emotionally. Chelsea had every right to feel how she felt from her past traumas, however I think it took a little too long for her to get over them (book wise). I think the book could’ve been shorter and she could’ve healed a little earlier. Now obviously in real life take as long as you need to heal from the traumas that life gives us. With that being said this was still a good book and if you’ve ever read any Shayna Astor books (if you haven’t you’re missing out 😅) you know she packs her books with true emotion. Chelsea has come a long way and honestly I feel like she shows how many girls live there lives after going through the trauma she did. It was nice that she had such an amazing boyfriend by her side. Wes did everything right for her. He mentions not being enough for her but he definitely was everything she needed.

I truly enjoyed reading Chelsea viewing Loch & Shay’s relationship. I think they gave her the hope she needed to just jump in and open her heart to Wes. ❤️

Chels & Wes wake up the whole dorm floor

With book two we get Chelsea’s side of the story regarding Shay and Loc. We get a deeper understanding of her abandonment issues and how those issues caused her freak out over her bff and brother being together. I’m glad that she was able to recognize the source of her feelings and work through them. This story contains a bit more heat than the previous story. To me it makes sense since Chels has more experience sexually where Shay didn’t. Chels confidence in bed helped her to give some new things a go. What I’m saying here is Wes is a total alpha male and it’s hot lol!

Possible spoilers-
So on to why I like this book and series in general, while we get a hea, it’s an honest feel of what a relationship is. There’s no evil person coming in to sabotage the relationship, it’s people with different baggage wanting to be together and trying to figure out how. It also shows how people will make mistakes, but forgiveness can be given. Sometimes time can show us what we need and want. I’m glad for how the story played out. I’m super happy that Chelsea didn’t let past trauma keep her from being happy or for forgiving Wes not even hesitating to do so. Excited for book three!!

First things first -- if you disliked Chelsea in Off Limits, for quite a while in Setting Limits, you are going to dislike her too. But you will also get an explanation for some of her actions. Is she right? No, but there are reasons behind her behavior, and they are legitimate. Chelsea certainly had some over the top reactions, but she feels everything very deeply. She acts out because she wants to preserve what she feels and what she has; she holds tightly because she doesn't want to lose it. The other thing you'll learn is that she's harder on herself than anyone else could be (something we share, interestingly enough).

Second and probably most importantly, there is a lot of growth in being open about her feelings and fears for Chelsea in this book and while some of that comes from Shay and Lochlyn, the majority of it is because of Weston. Hooo boy, dominant, strong, sexy Weston! He doesn't take the brat behavior from Chelsea and he pushes her to be honest and open about what she is thinking and feeling. He knows her as well as she knows herself and sometimes knows what she's thinking before she says it -- hold onto that guy, Chels!! It's nice to see them get their chance!

Chelsea gave her best friend and brother an ultimatum when she found out they were not only dating but lied about it for months. Realizing how selfish she was being, she sets out to redeem herself and fix what she broke but during her journey she adds “hypocrite” to her self-deprecation as she slowly realizes her feelings for Wes, her brother's best friend. I loved seeing more of Shay and Lochlyn, especially from Chelsea’s point of view but with that being said, I felt it took a little away from getting to know Wes and Chelsea as a couple. Wes was sweet and hot, but I just wish we got to know him better. I absolutely loved the way he loved Chelsea, especially how he helped destroy all the negative thoughts she had about herself. What I didn’t like about Chelsea in the first book, I came to love about her in this book. She did some real soul-searching and put in the work to better herself but like everyone else, she isn’t perfect but learns to love herself regardless. I couldn’t have imagined a better happily ever after for her.

Just an ok book

I didn't read the first book and while I did ok, I really think you should read the first book before this one. I gotta say I was not the biggest fan of Chelsea. Yes she gets in her head and it's hard to get her out of it. She also has issues due to her parents. She freaks out, breaks up a couple and then after they get back together. She makes it her mission to make sure she's forgiven, even though they did many times. She almost misses the best thing to ever happen to her...Wes. He's the reason I kept reading this book. He's got a way of pleasing a girl in the bedroom and a mouth that makes you swoon. He's a sweetie and is very possessive of his woman. The problem I had with this book is that him and Chelsea did the same thing as the other couple and it was ok. It was a double standard to be honest. It kinda threw me off. Like I said,if it wasn't for Wes, I wouldn't have kept reading this book. Chelsea was just awful and really didn't grow much.

Trope(s):
✔️ Brother's Best Friend
✔️ Secret Dating
✔️ Redemption

Triggers: N/A

I loved how this book starts off when Chelsea finds out that her brother and her best friend have been sleeping together behind her back. It gave me a glimpse of her thoughts and her reasoning as to why she was so against it rather than her just saying it would be weird for her. Seeing her internal battles and all that her parents absence caused her, made me like her a bit more because I must admit I did dislike her in Off Limits because of how selfish she seemed to be acting, but this book made me understand her even more. She definitely deserves having Wes in her life. He brings out a side of her that no one else can. And she was finally able to understand the relationship her brother and best friend have. I really loved how we saw more glimpses into their lives and relationship past how Off Limits ended. I can’t wait to read more about there relationships in the next book!!

Tropes:

Brothers Best Friend
Secret Relationship

This is book two in the Limits series and in this one we follow Chelsea. If you happened to read my review of book one, you know how much I disliked her. I know that Shayna put something in the book about giving her a chance, but I am sorry, I still did not like her.

The fact that she kept bringing up over and over again about breaking up Shay and Loch really annoyed me. I get that she has abandonment issues and that everyone leaves her, but stop bringing it up. To me, she was doing it for attention.

I did love that we got her POV though from when she found out about Shay and Loch and the story continued from there. It didn't fast forward. I also really liked that the characters from the first book are also in this one.

Thank you to The Smuthood and Shayna for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Another great read from Shayna! I'm enjoying this Limits Series, especially since it's the first series from Shayna that I've read. I've enjoyed all her stand-alones, and I suppose you could read these as stand-alones, but I more enjoy knowing about all the characters in a series, from the previous book too. In the first book, I honestly did not like Chelsea at all, so I wasn't sure she deserved a redemption story. I thought she was selfish about her best friend and brother and not wanting them together. In this book we get a glimpse into her personal issues that help you understand why she felt that way. She is still an annoying character for me, but that makes you more invested in the storyline and wanting to see what happens next. I'm glad she got to be with such a great guy like Wes and I would love to learn more about him in the next book.

OKAY SO. I hated Chelsea in the first one. And the first 12 chapters of this book with her as the main character, I’m still hating her.

Book 1: best friends brother and forbidden.
Book 2: brothers best friend.

Okay so maybe I’m picky AF, but the author mentioned that this was supposed to redeem the FMC - but lmfao I feel like she didn’t. Literally gave her boyfriend an ultimatum, either he pick her or they broke up while he moved across the country for a great job. I’m sorry but, how was that her growing?

Like honestly. Wes deserved so much better. I don’t know how he dealt with Chelsea and how she was his “everything”. Like it’s a hard no from me, dawg. I get that it was a “new adult romance”, but I felt like so much more character growth could have been done than what Chelsea did.

Setting Limits was a really good read! It was emotional and I really enjoyed Chelsea’s character growth. I haven’t read the first book in this series so I didn’t have an emotional connection to Shay and Locklyn, but I felt this book focused a little too much on them, but I guess it was necessary to include if a reader had read the first book.

I loved Chelsea’s character and saw the depth in her character throughout this book. I loved Wes for Shayna. He was the perfect book boyfriend that had me swooning and he was perfect for Chelsea! Wes was absolutely perfect and I loved him for Chelsea!

What to Expect:
💙 Redemption Arc
💙 Brother’s Best Friend
💙 Secret Dating
💙 Friends to Lovers

I recommend reading book 1, Off Limits, before reading Setting Limits

I wasn’t a big fan of Chelsea in the first book, but she redeemed herself a bit by the end. I love Wes, him and Chelsea were a perfect pair. I feel like she could have focused a bit less on Shay and Loch, but I guess it kind of makes sense when you learn about the sibling’s past abandonment issues. I think falling for her brothers best friend helps her understand brother falling for her best friend. The smut was the icing on the cake for me. I’m so glad Chelsea found her forever love, and that she was able to find her own way to heal from her traumas.

Great addition!

Admittedly, I was nervous about Chelsea's book. She was so freaking hard to like after Off Limits that I did need to see how she was going to be redeemed.

It took a while for me to warm up to her, but when you get to know her and the reasons behind why she does what she does, you do like her a lot more.

Weston was *chefs kiss* perfect. I love me a dirty talker and Shayna can write me all the dirty talkers going forward. He treated Chelsea the way she always wanted to be. The way she saw her best friend being treated by her brother.

Overall, I enjoyed this book.

Absolute perfection once again by Shayna. Setting limits is the 2nd book in Limits Series. You could read as a stand-alone but I’d highly recommend you to read Off Limits first. There you’ll first meet Chelsea.
So much character development out of Chelsea I was almost thinking she was someone else ❤️ We meet Wes and as someone who adored Lochlyn in Off Limits I do believe there is now some competition on who I adore more.

Anyways check out this Duet and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do.

Absolutely loved this book! This is the 2nd book in the series and continued Shay and Lochlyns relationship but also stepped into Chelsea's world. I loved how Shayna showed us all the real thoughts behind Chelsea finding out about her brother and best friend and then went on to show Chelsea's relationship. Definetely had some spicy moments and so many deep thoughts and conversations. I am so excited for book 3 to find out more about all 4 characters.

Must read! I would recommend reading Off Limits (book 1) first and then this one to get the full story of all the characters.

Thank you Shayna for allowing me to be an ARC reader for another amazing book!

This book 2 in The Limits series was really eye opening and it explained a lot of questions I had. This friends to lovers trope is so more than you expect. It’s raw, emotional and very heartbreaking/heartfelt. I can’t say enough about this author and the way she writes. It’s so empowering and its feelings we’ve all had at one point or another. She expresses different experiences in ways that you truly feel what that character is going through. I buy her books blindly because I know they will grabs me in ways I never imagined.

Wow, this book grabbed me and kept me reading until the very last page. It moves along at a pace that makes for an easy and enjoyable read, one that you will have a hard time putting down. The characters are so real that you feel as though you know them and no matter what happens you cant help but love them. This book needs to be read and at the top of your TBR list, you will not be sorry that you did.
