National treasure and presenter of ITV's hugely popular Love Your Garden, Alan Titchmarsh brings us his month by month almanac of garden knowledge, facts, advice and inspiration. Here is seasonal advice on what to grow and sow, projects to engage in, as well as wildlife to spot, gorgeous gardens to visit, birds and flowers to celebrate, weather notes, and nature to reflect on in poems, music, and books. A beautifully packaged giftbook with illustrations by Alan himself.
Alan has a way of narrating this audiobook that is very entertaining. For a person new to gardening like me, I found it very informative and inspiring.
Throughout this gentle walk through the gardener’s year, the voice of Alan Titchmarsh emanates from the text. His observational humour, delight in the wider natural world and depth of knowledge of gardening, plants, wildlife and history take you on an inspiring journey from January through to December.
I read the book month by month so Alan’s musings sat alongside what was happening in the garden. It is an almanac in the loose sense of the word but it is not a dry factual read. Yes, there are lists of plants at their best and jobs to do (or not to do!) in the garden each month but it is infinitely more beguiling and enjoyable to read than the title suggests - although anyone knowing the author would expect nothing less from this intelligent and witty Yorkshireman.
I loved the singling out of specific plants and trees each month alongside classical music and books that the gardener might enjoy. I also found the details of historic figures who have made their mark on our concept of gardening fascinating. I noted the sunrise and sunset times in the lengthening and shortening of days alongside traditions and myths associated with the seasons.
An altogether delightful way to welcome this national treasure into my living room each month!
