Seeing Glory: A Novel of Family Strife, Faith, and the American Civil War

Rate this book
GLORY! Their whole understanding of it was wrong—until they understood the sacrifice that it sometimes requires.

1856. Abel Bowman, a young Kansas farmer, receives a powerful, bloodstained vision of glory that binds him to the radical abolitionist cause of John Brown and links his destiny with those of Emma, Catherine, and David Hodge—the adult children in an elite southern Virginia plantation family that is becoming bitterly divided over the slavery issue.

The Hodge siblings love each other, but Emma’s efforts to befriend the family’s slaves ignites a deep fury within her politically ambitious father. She then faces a stark choice: yield to her father’s demands, or embrace the perilous course of secretly supporting several slaves in their quest for education and freedom.

When war hits Fort Sumter, David—disgusted by southern religious views on slavery—moves north to join Abel’s Union Army regiment as a war journalist delivering vital post-battle reports to President Lincoln. The men’s zeal for the abolitionist cause is great, but will it help or hinder their endurance of horrific battlefield violence and scandalous personal accusation?

Catherine, meanwhile, remains devoted to her ailing father and his traditional southern beliefs. Crushed by personal tragedy and abandonment by her siblings, she struggles to protect her home and life as she’s always known it from disloyal plantation employees and invading Union forces.

Confronted with terrifying threats to life and property, Abel and the Hodge siblings finally come to see the deadly consequences of their blind adherence to misled personal convictions. Will they yield to despair—or will they triumph by giving up their illusions, uniting with each other and with recently freed slaves in pursuit of a new, higher vision of glory?

Seeing Glory will capture the reader’s mind and heart as they join the gripping, faith-transforming journeys of Abel, Emma, Catherine, and David through cataclysmic national and family events, ferocious land and river battles, daring escapes to freedom, and ex-slave transition disputes that defined the era of the American Civil War between 1856 and 1865.

Bruce Gardner provides a captivating perspective on the American Civil War in Eyeing Glory – a compelling narrative that explores the war era through family strife, conflict over faiths, and a pursuit of "Glory" that echoes through each character's spirit.
16-year-old Abel Bowman shares many Yankees' and northerners' views about slavery's degeneracy. He (like many others) straddles the line between rejecting this evil legacy and dreading the consequences, which could threaten their survival as minuscule grains of opposition. (Until) Abel witnesses a life-altering event while assisting ardent abolitionist John Brown in pushing the cause of abolition. The incident stirs up Abel, stimulating him to gain "glory" for the cause of abolition. But Abel (must) discover what glory truly entails - a terrifying zeal or something much more serene...

The story jumps forward three years to 1959 on the Hodge family plantation in Virginia's pro-slavery southern area. There remains an opinion gap in the family of four: anti-slavery radicals Emma and David are on the one side and their father and eldest sister Catherine, the "well-intended" slave owners, on the other. It is the self-righteous obstinacy of their beliefs that cuts the path of the collective. Meanwhile, as the civil war escalates, Brown's warning of an "explosion" comes true. Politics, massacres, and retaliation from rival faiths and religious perspectives all go with war. The fate of Abel, David, and Emma connects their path. The three zealous radicals face further challenges in their battle for abolition as their clouded consciences and moral conundrums weigh on them. They must not only fight off the self-interests of opportunists against the basic rights of emancipated slaves. They also must recognize and embrace the genuine core of "glory," as well as repair the familial bonds damaged in a battle between self-righteousness and uncompromising faiths.

Gardner uses a strong allegory to depict two contrasting viewpoints on slavery and the faiths that support them. Many of the characters, both historical and fictitious, illustrate this wide range of faiths and patriotic sentiments. Conflict, in its different manifestations, occupies a significant space in the narrative. The conflict arises first in the form of characters and a society that is not compatible with their views, as in the case of Emma and David. This later develops into a serious battle with self, as indicated by Abel and Catherine's doubts about their conscience. The conflict with God also pervades this Christian historical fiction, with many protagonists questioning and doubting its plans before discovering final hope and ardor in His trust. The story offers the reader a broad canvas on which to paint locations spanning States and battlegrounds, as well as novel thoughts and viewpoints on the Civil War and slavery, all in one magnificent and engaging plot.

Bruce Gardener's Seeing Glory is a masterfully written, thought-provoking, and gripping Christian historical book about the American Civil War. The novels describe how family, religion, and spirituality influenced character development amid slavery and war hardships.

Abel Bowman, a young Kansas farmer, is bonded to John Brown's cause on a southern Virginia Plantation in 1856 thanks to a profound vision of glory. In addition to describing the experiences of this Southern family prior to the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War, Gardner also elaborates on their beliefs regarding the Abolitionist Movement and the Christian response to slavery in the South. The author's writing gives the long-forgotten conflicts of that time period new life.

Gardner maintains his text clean in this lengthy but captivating novel, and his characters are sympathetic despite composing on a subject that can potentially be of epic proportion. The historical events keep the plot moving forward and lead to satisfying entertainment with an impactful climax. Gardener's writing displays his intense interest in the subject, as well as his discovery of the human spirit amid conflict.

In this historical novel, Seeing Glory, it was great to see how flawed individuals strive to stay true to their values after the war disrupted their lives.

Written by Bruce Gardner, Seeing Glory is a historical fiction that portrays the characters' dark days under the American Civil War period. The story centers around Abel Bowman and his quest towards freedom to slavery and societal conflicts in this era. I often read historical fictions because they are very compelling to read. It's like seeing a portion of a history through the imagination. This book is one of those stories that keep me glued to it from start to finish. Aside from Abel, the rest of the characters are very interesting. I love the family conflict, the gripping emotions, and the satisfying resolution between them. I can also say that the events were unpredictable that's why it has a certain level of surprise for a reader like me. The writing style amazed me, it was very easy to get into. And I like the dialogues and narration as well. Over all, a winning book.

Seeing Glory: A Novel of Family Strife, Faith, and the American Civil War by Bruce Gardner is the story of a Southern family living right before the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War, split on their ideas about the Abolitionist Movement and Christian response to slavery in the South.
I really like the characters that Gardner has written, because they’re realistic—no villains, just people with their own beliefs. I may have (and did) disagree with many of them, but it’s a historical fact that these views existed, so it definitely prompts deeper thought about what caused these beliefs. This book very accurately captures how complex of a movement Abolitionism was, with those opposing it not necessarily being sadistic slave owners.

After so long, finally, a book that brings the authentic taste of historical fiction sagas. The story set on the premise of civil war has multiple layers of family ties, religion, and emotional drama. The suspense always keeps you on the edge while rooting for one or another character. Each character holds depth and plays an important role in building up the story. It’s a full package of entertainment and emotional drama. It’s a big thing for me to say as I am a drama fiction buff. Even though it’s a war drama it is not inundated with action and does not neglect the story-building part. I highly recommend this to all fiction lovers. Excited to read the next part of this saga.
