Sydney Rye Mysteries #15

Undefeated: Sydney Rye Mysteries #15

Rate this book
The moon hangs low and full, her silvery light reflecting in the facets of black choppy water.

Blue and I sit in the cockpit of a sailboat. My eyes scan the open ocean while female Peshmerga fighters sleep all around me—below deck, across benches on the bow, and one curled up on the stern.

I cup my pregnant belly, allowing myself room to grieve in this peaceful moment. Rida saved my life… and I got her killed.

My old story starts to ride its rails: Everyone I love dies.

Tears thicken my throat. My dog, Blue, sitting by my feet, leans more heavily against my leg. I sink my fingers into the thick ruff across his broad shoulders, finding some peace in the warmth there. Blue doesn't die.

Rida did, though. Shot in the back. Killed in an instant.

The faces of others I've lost crowd my mind's eye. My brother, James, grins at me like he knows all my secrets. Malina winks, her eyes sparkling with joy. I got them killed too…

I spawned the lies Rida used to start a revolution. Right before she died, Rida told me my lies were truth, that she was a messenger from God, and so was I. Because we are all divine. Bunch of nonsense.

But Rida's lies lent strength to women, offering them the opportunity to recognize their worth.

Her words freed women who'd believed other lies about our gender. That we are dangerous and in danger. More nonsense.

But women believed Rida's new story instead of the old ones…fascinating how much power belief lends reality.

Rida claimed to be a profit, to have heard the voice of God, and that He said women were equal, and should rise-up and claim their rightful positions next to men. But it wasn't God, it was a very brain damaged me.

The lies took on a life of their own, as they so often do. Fueled by enough belief, a well told lie—fiction—can change the world.

The boat rocks gently, the sail filled by a fresh gust of wind.

We are in international waters off the coast of France, fleeing. This is how my life as Sydney Rye began. Blue and I in a boat, escaping New York City. But it’s no longer just us two. My son shifts inside me as if he can sense my thoughts of him…and maybe he can.

The connection I feel to my son is not something I can articulate. Maybe because I’m afraid of what it sounds like. It sounds like a bunch of nonsense.

I've always insisted that faith in a God, in a deity outside myself is dangerous. I always held myself responsible. Insisted that I choose to save lives, often by taking others. I made those choices. No God told me what to do, or absolved me of my actions.

Those beliefs brought me here, to this boat, to this life growing inside of me. To a grief as deep as the sea beneath me.

Is there a way forward without bloodshed? Can I break this curse and hold onto the ones I love without giving up and just letting the world spin on without me? It's all the trying that gets people killed. But every time I stop… they suck me back in.

Lightning flashes in the distance and I look at Blue, he doesn't react to the storm I see hovering on the horizon. It lives in my damaged brain. A lie I'm telling myself.

I smile, humor in the absurd thinning the blanket of grief cloaking me.

Thunder rumbles and a voice whispers within it. Burn it all down.

Images spring to life inside my mind's eye. A web of lies suspends humanity in a constant struggle, each of us flies buzzing against the spider's perfectly designed snare—the more we fight, the stronger the web holds. Each of us entangling ourselves further, twisting the silk tighter, holding us in our singular perspective.

But even if we don't fight, the web still holds—it does not release when we surrender.

There is no escape…except to destroy the web. To burn it down.

I write because I love to read, but I have specific tastes...

If I was offered a job as a professional reader with no strings attached, I would take it. Getting paid to sit around and read while drinking tea all day—I'm there. Since that’s not possible, I became an author.

I write the books I want to read—stories that give me the immersive reading experiences I crave. When a series grabs me, and it's all I can think about, I'm SO happy. When my inner dialogue starts sounding like the protagonist of my current read, I think, Oh yeah, this is IT. This is what I love.

When I finish a book, and I NEED to immediately grab the next one in the series, that’s the intensity I crave. When I binge read an entire series, I want to feel like my own reality changed—as if the stories I read affected the real world just a little. After a great series I'm a little wiser, a little more grateful for my everyday existence, and a little more aware that my personal perspective is not everyone's.

Personally, I like to spend time in fictional worlds where justice is exacted with a vengeance, even though good and bad are not always black and white. Give me raw stories with a main character who occasionally makes me laugh, is flawed like we all are, and feels like a friend by the end of the first few chapters. They don’t have to be a friend I always LIKE, per se, but a part of me has to root for them.

For me, the sentence structure is important. Too much passive voice, and I'm out. I do not mind four-letter words at all though. Sex in books can go either way—fade to black or show me the details, but either way there has to be a reason it’s in the story. I'm also into heroic pets, plots that seem totally unhinged but all come together in the end with a BANG, and long series so I always have more to look forward to.

Those are the types of stories I love reading, so that’s how I write. If you’re into some or all of the above then I think we are going to get along fantastically.

This is another one for my 2024 Cleaning out the TBR Closet reads. It’s been a long time (May2022) since I had caught up with Sydney and Blue and the rest of the gang. I don’t know why either because I do love this series. Like so many long running series, this series has become an epic story of a woman and her dog who have been on the run now for 15 installments (about 10yrs). Sydney and Blue have traveled the world hunting down the bad guys and have been nearly killed in the process too many times to count.

The series started back in NY with Joy, aka Sydney now, getting fired from her job and becoming a dog-walker. In the course of her day walking dogs, as well as finding a dead client, Joy discovers some pretty dark secrets about NY’s elite. She meets NYPD detective, Mulberry, who is investigating the case. After the dead bodies pile up, Sydney goes on the run, along with a rescue dog, Blue, and they haven’t stopped since.

Eventually, Syd and Mulberry become partners, professionally and personally, who start an international investigation and security company with the riches they have acquired (a whole other storyline). They eventually cross paths with a mutual adversary Robert Maxim, who says that he needs their help. This arrangement does not end well for Syd and Mulberry, which is exactly what Maxim wanted.

It's while hiding out in India that Syd meets Dan and they stumble onto a human trafficking ring and it’s this case that sets Syd, Dan and Mulberry on their paths of ridding the world of scumbag traffickers along with a huge following that believe in Syd’s mission. They establish Joyful Justice, whose mission is to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves and set up a high-tech camp down in a jungle of Costa Rica.

Throughout the series, Syd has fought for victims of human trafficking, along with Muslim women for freedom as well as those whose communities have been taken over by violence and the thugs who drive the innocent residents to fear. JJ, aka Joyful Justice, has become this huge organization that is now run by a council of leaders, and fellow fighters that Syd and Blue have met along the way that keeps JJ running smoothly. Syd’s loved ones, family, friends, including Dan and Mulberry, have come in and out of her life because of the danger that surrounds her. She and Blue have also added two of Blue’s offspring, Frank and Nila (who are absolutely adorable) to the family.

However, her mortal enemy, Maxim, is always there, always stalking and hunting Syd in his efforts to capture and own her. He eventually sets her up and backs her into a corner where she can only get out with his help. Ater 14 installments, Maxim has finally captured Syd for his own. After getting her released from an American prison to his custody, Maxim, proceeds to force her to marry him, because a husband doesn’t have to testify against his wife.

Syd is now very pregnant (Mulberry’s the father) and worries about the safety of her baby and knows that her life must change, but she doesn’t know how or what to do about her relationships for both Mulberry and Maxim, but most especially, her baby. The pacing in this installment was not the action-packed, fast paced storyline that has been the case with the rest of the series up to now. There were some intense scenes but not like standard Sydney Rye stuff. Then there was that ending!!! OMG!!! Never saw that one coming!!! Kimelman definitely pumped up the action and pacing for the final few chapters, and the tear-jerking scene that had me bawling. NOOO!!! Loved the ending that had me screaming “YEAH”!!! Omg! Syd is such a badass!!!

The continuing character development of the MC’s was good to see while still leaving room for further development now that a baby has been added to the mix. While I have never been a parent, I have spent a lifetime watching my friends and relatives change once they became parents. You don’t need to be a parent to know that once you become a parent, life as you know it, will never be the same. The story was interesting, seeing Syd trying to handle impending motherhood, especially with her new goal of burning it all down (whole other storyline – more to be determined). The relationship stuff got a little boring at times, especially the scenes with Maxim – uuuggghhh!!! However, I loved the scenes with Mulberry. For the record, I am and have always been devoted to Team Mulberry!!! I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.3 that I will be rounding down to a 4star rating.

Oh I have been waiting for this next Sydney Rye book and I’ve got to say it did not disappoint and now… well now I’m left desperately waiting for the next book, lol.
So Sydney very pregnant these days and struggling with the death of someone she admired, even if she wasn’t completely sure about this woman.
Sydney heads to the island, Sydney doges her husband every chance she gets…
Sydney tries to figure out in her head the two men she loves, Mulberry the father of her baby and Robert a man who will burn down the world for her and Sydney loves and hates him at the same time…
In the end Sydney’s first and only choice is her son, she will do whatever she has to for the baby boy she is carrying, while trying to change the world into a better place for home to thrive.
Things start to unravel… greatly and Sydney is left in an impossible, heart wrench situation…
I still can’t believe everything Sydney has survived, even though I’ve been right there with her the whole way, it’s still mind-blowing at times, damn I’m glad she has Blue beside her.
So I just can’t give spoilers lol just know this is an amazing, awesome, hear wrenching story that stole my heart.

“Undefeated “picks up exactly where “Fatal Breach” (#14) leaves off: The Her Prophet has just been murdered, Sydney Rye is still pregnant from one man she loves, while still in the forced marriage to another, one of the more despicable men ever written, who in spite of that, or maybe because of that, Sydney may—or may not, also love.

And her first thought is: “Everyone I love dies.”

In other words, just another day that ends in “Y” for Sydney Rye.

This book, unlike its recent predecessors, is told completely in first person Sydney Rye narrative. Which is only fitting, as this is the most personal and introspective SR novel in quite some time. And it is only fabulous.

Not that the constellation of characters that have come to populate the Joyful Justice universe are not interesting and have their own stories to tell and thoughts to share. But let’s face it, Sydney Rye is the sun around which all others revolve, and focusing completely on her and her innermost thoughts is truly luxuriating.

Now that her bun in the oven is growing, Sydney’s focus is being drawn increasingly in that direction. Her nesting instincts dominate her every thought, feeling, and emotion. But since it’s Sydney Rye we’re talking about, it’s not as though she has a little house with a white picket fence to baby-proof, with a cozy room to paint in pastels and unicorns, filled with lots of stuffed animals and such. No, Sydney is worldwide--in thought, action, and residences. So, her nesting instinct compels her to make the entire world safe for her impending child. The whole freaking world.

Naturally, this leads her to seek out advice of the philosophical kind from her closest and most trusted friends and confidants. Yes, there are many philosophical discussions, much of which is actually very current, interesting, and downright thought provoking-- right up to the point where you feel as though you’ve wandered into an old Woody Allen New Yorker movie, or maybe been transported to a grassy quad during a sophomore philosophy class at Sarah Lawrence. But wait, right at that exact moment, something so unexpected and so “Sydney” happens that it instantly shocks your mind. An incredible plot twist with edge-of-your-seat action that propels you right through to the next chapter, leaving any philosophical aftertaste a gauzy memory. Amazing.

If this sounds a little mental whiplash inducing, remember who we’re dealing with here. It reminds me of the scene in the Martin Scorsese classic “Taxi Driver”, when Betsy explains to Travis Bickle that he reminds her of a Kris Kristofferson song and (mis)quotes, "'He's a prophet and a pusher, partly truth, partly fiction. A walking contradiction.'" I mean, does that not apply to Sydney Rye, or what?

In fact, if you really think about it, Sydney Rye and Travis Bickle have a whole lot in common. Who does this describe: Seeing injustice, corruption, and sexual exploitation they try and do the right thing, leading to a violent encounter ending in very highly publicized, and much deserved, violence and death. Inexplicably, they are feted as a hero in the media and become celebrated as a righteous vigilante. Inside, they are somewhat bewildered as their own seemingly failed act of personal vengeance is nonetheless co-opted by external forces turning their actions, and by extension them, into a broader narrative of heroic vigilantism. Confusingly, they know in their heart they are not a hero at all, but a killer.

So? Travis Bickle, or Sydney Rye? Exactly.

And can’t you just imagine Sydney staring into a mirror, practicing over and over, “Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?” Slightly unhinged, but totally badass--Sydney all the way. And how killer would she look with a mohawk? No, no—Blue with a mohawk. If Sydney thinks, “Even hardened criminals can’t resist his face”, wait till they see him with a mohawk…

Fortunately for Sydney, she always has Blue by her side, mohawk or not, to keep her head on straight, tapping his cold nose against her hip or hand at just the right moment, reassuring, keeping her present. And “Undefeated” is no exception--and maybe more crucial than ever. As Sydney contemplates the true nature of love, ulterior motives, and truly being accepted and loved for who she is—all of her, just as she is—the unconditional love from Blue, who not only loves her, but will fight and die for her, can only be the example of what she yearns to find in human life. If that’s even possible.

And fortunately for us readers, we are always reminded that, “The dog doesn’t die”. It’s clearly stated whenever you see a SR book. Why is that so important? Well, for dog lovers, there are some who just cannot handle it (I’m raising my hand). The type that wears a “I Don't Care Who Dies In The Movie, As Long As The Dog Lives” T-shirt.

Also, Sydney’s dog, Blue, is special. Not short-bus special. But special-exceptional in that he’s an extension of Sydney herself, often acting as her living, breathing, four-legged-furry conscience. Kind of like Jiminy Cricket, without the Mister Peanut outfit and the treacly Disney tunes.

Even more importantly for the reader, it’s a pledge from Ms. Kimelman to be honest with us. She respects her readers and will not use the cheap emotional manipulation of placing Blue in mortal peril, forcing us to fear for his life, only to resurrect him like a sleazy parlour trick, as some emotionally immature authors or directors often do—and yes, I’m speaking to you, Mr. Steven Spielberg.

So, bottom line for “Undefeated”. Best Sydney Rye novel in quite a while, and that’s saying something. First person narrative of Sydney all the way, creating the most personal, intimate, deeply emotional, and revealing novel, while still delivering on heart-pounding action, tender moments, great interaction with friends you know and love, wonderful moments of Blue—what am I saying? It’s Sydney F-ing Rye. You know you want it. Just buy the damn book.

Sydney Rye is an amazing woman. We’ve followed her all over the world as she works to right the wrongs. She’s pregnant with Mulberry’s baby, while her husband Robert (not really by choice) is trying to control her every move. She struggles with this lusty feeling for Robert but wants to love Mulberry and enjoy their family. This book is my favorite, I feel like we’re seeing the Sydney we can all relate to. Not that we have two men wanting a future with us. But she’s experiencing “things” because of her pregnancy which makes her more normal. I found there was humor in her love for the dogs and her situation that she wouldn’t have noticed before. This will pull at your heart strings and find yourself hurting, but she’s been through hell and still survives. The story must be read in order, it’s worth the read for all the books. The story is magnificent and has everything readers love. I received my copy early and wrote this review honestly and voluntarily.

Undefeated - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Pregnant and grieving the killing of someone she was close to, Sydney Rye, vigilante philanthropist and inspiration to as many as she's loathed and targeted by, seems to attract unwanted attention wherever she goes.

Even trying to focus on preparation for her impending maternity doesn't go as smoothly as planned. Thankfully her canine champion and defender, Blue, is always at hand to save her from danger and support her in saving others.
In fact, if it weren't for her complicated love-life, Sydney could happily live on her private island as CEO of Joyful Justice, to bring peace and fulfilment to the world and everyone in it.

A lovely vision, but is it realistic given Sydney's self-inflicted inner demons, that frustrate her mentally and hold her back with doubts of her capability to love unrestrictedly, be self-reliant and ultimately 'undefeated'?
And what will change when she gives birth?

Find out by getting your hands on Emily Kimmelman's fantastic new book today!

Recommended to fans of Kristi Belcamino, Toby Neal and Craig Martelle.

Emily has knocked it out of the park again with her newest release, Undefeated. The dog doesn’t die, but someone does.
Undefeated picked up right where we left off in Fatal Breach. The Her Prophet has been murdered, Dan is recovering from his run-in with the Incels and Sydney is pregnant with Mulberry’s baby while in a forced marriage with that damned Robert.
After everything she has lived through, all Sydney can think about as she tries to plan for her child’s future is that she needs to “burn it all down”. Not sure exactly what that would entail, Sydney F-ing Rye seeks the council of the people she knows she can count on, her family of misfit; and that is just the first couple of chapters!
Robert makes demands on her time, Mulberry just wants to be together when their child is born, Sydney just wants to not have to worry but you all know, everyone she loves-dies.
There are so many surprises packed into this book that each one builds on top of the one before it until suddenly, you are at the end wondering just what the H-E-double hockey sticks just happened.
TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT!!!

I listened to audiobook 13-15 so this covers the 3.

Sydney is a mess. Now she’s in love with two men, one of whom is a controlling maniac: but don’t worry, only one is still standing at the end of the book.

Despite being pregnant, Sydney doesn’t any better at making decisions and staying safe. She almost gets killed a few times but now it’s because the people she is with are targets not that she is a target. Her scary husband fakes death to get her to say she loves him, her true love/baby daddy dies saving others, and she is in a coma for a month while pregnant so isn’t prepared for delivering on a deserted island.

Now she’s decided to also ditch the controlling husband she somehow loves and start anew.

Also Dan finally falls in love and his feeling are reciprocated. I wasn’t thrilled Consuela was cheating and ultimately she leaves him behind to stay legal even though she’s pushed past that limit several times to save her niece. Loads going on and at the end of the day I am not sure any of the characters are redeemable.

“Her words freed women who’d believed other lies… that we are dangerous and in danger.”

Truth of the matter is that women are dangerous because we are powerful in numbers. It’s those numbers that put us in danger out of fear.

I love Sydney because she is a righter of wrongs and an inspiration to the underdogs. But how much is too much? How far is too far? Those are the questions Sydney is struggling with. With her thoughts increasingly focused on her growing baby, she must find a way to make the world a better place for her child before it’s too late. Maybe the world needs to burn to start anew?

In tried and true Sydney form, we have an action packed, edge of your seat, heart wrenching, roller coaster ride of a journey to find all the answers.

I was provided an ARC copy.

Starting from the first pages of this book, you are swept into something that is hard to prepare for, in a good way. Sydney has a life like no one else I have ever read about. She is often in danger, she meets interesting characters, all the while doing her best to keep her cool and focus on the important things in life. Even though this is a book that is well into the series, it will be fine to start with this one, since you won’t be lost. It seems like its own story, but it is set in Sydney’s universe. Overall, this book provides laughs, scares, and even tender moments. Check it out to see how it makes you feel.

I received a advanced review copy of the book.

At the start, there is still the Mulberry and Maxim issue. This is unhappily resolved for Sydney, by the end of this book. You have to read this!!!

Robert is having safety issues for himself and control issues regarding Sydney. Again, big changes by the end. You have to read to find out.

Also, Sydney is pregnant and has to face reality and start planning for things, like, where to have the baby. Yeah, you will not believe where this happens. Sydney is AMAZING!!! You have to read to find out.

So much happens in this book. It ended. And I wanted so much more. I love these characters, the plots, the themes, and all of the rest.

Well this was an emotional rollercoaster of a story! It was an action-packed ride, too, as Sydney finds herself in the line of fire many times.

Sydney begins this story with an idea. Not a solid idea, but something she wants to work on. As well as this, she has to figure out how to handle the two men in her life, her pregnancy as she gets further along (and all that comes with giving birth and being a parent), and her health in general. I really don't want to spoil anything, but this one was definitely an emotional one.

I'm intrigued about the next book (especially that glimpse we got at the end of this one), it sounds interesting for sure!

Talk about a heart stopper. This book is amazing. This book starts where the last one left off. Never a dull moment in Sydney's life. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, everything changes. This book is a real page turner, I didn't want to put it down. I am so happy that I was able to read an advance copy of this book. I am very excited about the next book to see what happens in Sydney's life!

She is fierce, dangerous, and pregnant.
A relationship with Robert still feels awesome.
Mulberry eyes twinkle feeling the kick of the baby
Blue my true companion by my side
Does she bring trouble to where she is at, even to the island.
Was the lies told, really the truth, she now questions
Adventure is once again non stop to read and enjoy
Given ARC for my vulnerability review and my honest opinion

Sydney is back, in all her glory.... and very pregnant. Still convinced she can't, and won't decide between Robert and Mulberry, she waits for the baby to bring her life into focus. Or will it just cloud her thinking even more.
As with any "Sydney" book, be prepared for a lot of action and a lot of the unexpected to happen.
I recommend this one, and all in the series. They will keep you guessing with every step.

Everyone I Love Dies

This book opens and ends with her grieving a loss. We travel with her and Blue through some of the most gorgeous beaches on the planet. Unable to accept and enjoy the beauty and privilege, death continues to follows her. I was hoping the pregnancy and her impending motherhood would heal her heart and mind but it seems our Sydney Mother**cking Rye may be irreparably broken. Looking forward to the next adventure, Winter 2023, pre-ordered Relentless.

Many changes for Sydney

It has been a little while since I read the previous book in the series. I had forgotten what a badass Sydney MFing Rye. She hates being manipulated and is very clear that certain behaviors are absolutely unacceptable and she puts a stop to them. The story starts at a hidden island fortress and ends up parachuting out of a burning small airplane. What a rollercoaster adventure. If you appreciate kickass women you've got to read this series.

I have been waiting for this book for a long time, it's one of my favorite series. I have truly enjoyed the book as all the previous ones, it definitely does not disappoint - suspense and action all the way. Even the locale for the most of the events is my favorite remote volcano island. Story line is great as always, keeps you guessing and occasionally surprised at the outcome. As all the previous books this absorbs you in a way you cannot put down the book and have to read all way through as fast as possible. This series would look great on TV screen I'm sure. I am very eager to follow Sydney & Blue and all the other players in the story in their next adventure. Recommend to any reader who enjoys a thriller and suspense novel with a strong female protagonist (with a dog as a sidekick).

No one EVER said that trouble couldn't find Sydney Rye! Even when she's taken every step possible to stay 'under the radar', there it is. In this latest book, not even Robert, not even Mulberry, nor even being on her super-safe and super-secure island can keep trouble from finding her. Is this the end?

Emily does it again, when is the next book coming out? Sydney is a true badass and manages to keep going when others would quit. The story continuing through Sydney’s eyes gives the true sense of what she is going through. Another book I didn’t want to put down but those pesky eat, drink, sleep and work things managed to get in the way. Do yourself a favor and read this book you won’t regret it.

This book grabbed me from the start and didn’t let go! I didn’t think the author could do better than the previous book in the series but…OMG…this book was explosive, unpredictable, emotional, etc. I felt like I was on a continuous roller coaster ride! The characters and storyline were A+. Loved the book from start to finish!!!

Wow just Wow. Poor Sydney, people just never stop trying to kill her. In the past she hasn't cared all that much about what happens to her, but now she has her unborn son to think about. She is a fighter and I can't imagine how she deals with it all. I never cried so hard as I did reading this. Highly recommend this series.

Always Undefeated

Undefeated does not fail the reader. Sydney is placed in an impossible position, but she’s Sydney Motherf*#+ing Rye. You wouldn’t expect her to be any less. If you’re a fan, you need no convincing. If you haven’t met her yet, start at the beginning and join our ranks. You won’t regret it.

Natural disasters, murder attempts galore, power struggles, and terrorist attempts along with comas are the constant backdrop to Sydney’s last trimester. And a new character to play a romantic interest? That’s to be revealed in #16.
Sometimes the plot is jumpy and lacks cohesion; other times it flows smoothly. Keeps you on the edge of your sest.

Destruction and death on the island

The decisions Sydney needs to make have come to a head. Who should she trust? How can she help keep her baby safe? She has a lot of planning to do because she knows life with a baby and her husband provides no safety. The next book will answer some of these questions, I hope.

Wowza, this newest Sydney Rye book is explosively amazing! Robert is still up to his old controlling tricks, and poor Mulberry is still in the wings waiting.  And Sydney, well she is as stubborn as ever with Blue by her side, as always.
An excellent book worth the read!

Emily Kimelman is an amazing author who has a way of making you get so caught up with the story line you can’t put the book down. I enjoyed this book very much and can’t wait until book 16 comes out.

This is book 15 in the Sydney rye and it is absolutely amazing. From the beginning it takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions so many twists and turns that this may be the best one yet in the series.
