Land and Sea #1

Jonah and the Narwhal

Rate this book
What happens when fate intertwines shifters from land and sea?

When Jonah Steele hung a flyer in the local coffee shop advertising his services as a housekeeper, he didn’t expect the town’s hot doctor to hire him on the spot. He definitely didn’t think he’d still be working for the mysterious older alpha two years later. But something about Dr. Pictou keeps Jonah returning to the big house on the cliff, a bone-deep longing he can’t explain—and recently, it’s been making Jonah crave the good doctor in ways he shouldn’t.

Dr. Edwin Pictou couldn’t say why he hired the young omega lynx to clean his house, but Jonah had ensnared him at first sight, and now, even though he really doesn’t need a housekeeper, the thought of letting Jonah go is unsettling. When Edwin comes home to find the omega—who he’s started to think of as his own—in heat, he realizes there is more at play than he first thought. Fate has intervened, and Edwin has no intention of ever letting Jonah go again.

Jonah and the Narwhal is the first story in the Land and Sea shifter MPREG series featuring fated mates, pleasurable partial shifts, and the beginnings of a found family. This story has been expanded from its original version into a full-length novel.

This is a saccharine sweet story with no angst or tension.

Jonah and Edwin already know and long for each other, but Edwin hasn't made a move because Jonah is some two decades his junior.

Then Jonah goes into heat on Edwin's bed, and the rest is sugar overload: heat sex, mpreg, baby narwhal, fated mates, HEA.

The idea of a world with all kinds of shifters living among humans is kind of fun, but the story was more than a little boring and the MCs far too nice and polite.

Jonah and the Narwhal is the first book in the Land and Sea series, it’s been on my TBR for a while and glad I finally got the chance to read it.. We have Jonah, a young Lynx shifter, working as a housekeeper for Dr. Edwin Pictou, a narwhal shifter as a side gig. There is an intense connection between them, the pull of fated mates, but as they orbit one another, that pull gets stronger until Johanh goes into early heat at Edwin’s residence.

“It was a primal sort of love that transcended our shifter species and even our humanity. It was the kind of love and devotion that had likely led to the genesis of shifters to begin with and it was the type of love that would keep our bloodlines alive for as long into the future as we could envision or comprehend.”

This was a sweet no angst fated mates story. Very much on the insta love side, but with fated mates who have known each other for nearly two years, it's a given they will fall hard and fast once they get on the same page. It was steamy, and I loved the creative use of Edwin's tusk. The unique knotting biology was fascinating as well. It made me curious to see how other shifters in this series mate.

I also enjoyed the found family aspect with Edwin and Jonah’s friends joining them. I’m curious about Merritt and Everett’s relationship, especially with Merritt not having any secondary scents.

I never read a story with narwhal shifters before, and I loved how there was a link to Canada. I felt like Edwin’s people were perhaps indigenous, maybe Inuit of origin? So, I found that refreshing to see. I also really enjoyed seeing the pregnancy and childbirth on page and not rushed or just part of the epilogue. The big age gap between Jonah and Edwin was a plus!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and liked the omegaverse world this author created. It's my first read from Vinni George, and I'm excited to check out the rest of the series.

Vinni George is a new-to-me author and this book caught my eye as I walked past her table at GRL. How could I resist a narwhal shifter?

This was a sweet story, with fated mates, Jonah a land-dwelling omega lynx and the other, Edwin an alpha narwhal, so opposites attract right there. They instantly feel a connection but in the two years Jonah has been unnecessarily working for Edwin cleaning his house, they had little contact. When everything finally happens it is fast and hot. Heat sex, claiming, and an unusual interspecies pregnancy and birth follow. Edwin and Johan are adorable, and I really liked Jonah's relationship with his lone-wolf best friend Merritt.

I enjoyed the story for what it was. If you are looking for deep world-building, you're not getting it here, but there is enough information given about the different species' cultures involved, including secondary characters, to satisfy. I'll definitely be picking up the next one.

Got off to a great start but lost me with the actual plot.

Representation: 40+ MC

This story was very cute. There's not even an inkling of angst, it was pure unadulterated fluff.

It starts out as PWP and I actually think I would have preferred this be very short, and end at around 30%, once they've mated and This could have been a nice, super sexy, 70-or-so-page novella. At that length, there would also have been no need for the emotional development that we didn't get anyway.

I found the rest of the book to be very scattered. The plot is

This was well-written though. It had some lovely, vivid descriptions and good use of expressions.

There were some intriguing elements of worldbuilding that I think were underdeveloped but have potential, and I'll admit I'm curious about the next book which I believe goes into a lot more detail.

One thing that I shouldn't have laughed about but couldn't help myself was the narwhal-tusk-sex. Not because it was badly written! I just couldn't actually imagine it, and just kept having these visuals of soccer players trying to headbutt soccer balls. That's totally on me though and I apologise if I also just ruined it for anyone by putting that image in your head, but I had to share!!

Sexual content: Explicit.

DNF at 42% 🤷🏻‍♀️

Of the 42% I’ve read so far, 20% was sex which is fine but *shrugs* meh.

Jonah’s been cleaning Edwin’s home for 2 years but they hadn’t really interacted much at all when Edwin discovered Jonah in heat and helped him through it. Turns out they’re fated and that’s… *shrugs again* fine too but the dialog is so sappy and I’m bored. Something about the storytelling feels flat and dull, I’m not invested or moved and simply don’t care.

That said, I think this could be a winner for fans of omegaverse, MPREG, fated mate shifter stories so if that’s your jam, seriously, ignore my review, I’m a weird, picky bitch 😅

DNF @ 40%. I liked the original novella. But this is just further proof that novellas should never be expanded. When the MC’s are mated and committed by half way, I’m not interested in the rest.

Also, it’s obvious this author is one of Roe Horvat’s besties. The results of that are a nearly identical omegaverse world but one is excellent and one is not.

Let me start by saying that I am so freaking OBSESSED with this series. My friend @lizareadsromance literally took me aside at Love and Romance in Toronto and talked it up to me, so I went and purchased the gorgeous SE of Jonah and the Narwhal from @vinnigeorgewrites. AND IT IS EVERYTHING. Land and Sea is just pure omegaverse goodness - lots of smut, a sweet story and a ton of sweetness. They are relatively short and easy to DEVOUR... but the most fun part about them is that each book in the series features very different types of shifters getting together. As a fan of shifters in general and unique shifters in particular, I was THRILLED to find out how on earth a narwhal and a lynx (Jonah), a beluga whale and a wolf (Everett), and a dolphin and a eagle (Dominic) managed to work things out BUT THEY DO AND IT IS PERFECT. PLEASE read immediately, I just cannot say enough good things.

The Land and Sea series is made up of interconnected standalones, so each book can theoretically be read on its own, though there is some character crossover. They all have fated mates vibes (SWOON) and elements of mpreg (though Everett is a little different). The most interesting part of each book is how these two different types of shifters learn about each other’s culture and how their unique bodyparts work 😏. The first book, Jonah and the Narwhal, is pretty fast-paced instalove (though the characters theoretically know each other for 2 years before they do anything). Everett and the Wolf is the most emotional so far, featuring a forced proximity, friends to lovers story with LOTS of caretaking that had me tearing up multiple times. But, honestly, my favorite is Dominic and the Dolphin - it’s hate to love with TONS of banter and humor and a nesting scene that had me CRYING laughing.

Seriously, if you are looking for a fun, low angst series to absolutely binge... this is it. I’m having a great time, and I will now be making an attempt to finish Vinni’s shifter backlist by the end of the year.

Picked this up as a freebie in a giveaway.

Nice age-gap, fated mates romance between a Narwhal doctor and a Lynx 20 or so years his junior. Interesting details on the mythology of the shifters in this world, and nice world-building as this is the first in a series.

I should’ve DNFd this and I was going to at the halfway point but then there was one scene with a side character that I really enjoyed which convinced me to continue. I shouldn’t have.

If you like fast burns and characters going from employee/employers to fated mates and pregnant in two days, using partially shifted narwhal horns during penetrative sex, you might like this. I did not.

There’s a couple of other things I didn’t like, one being the overly detailed moments. Like when Jonah was getting his first baby scan but since it was early they had to do an internal scan and the whole anal probing was overly detailed imo. We did not need to know about the probe, the condom for the probe, the lube for the probs, Jonah having to bear down while the Dr put in the probe, and the moving the probe about to get a clear image. It felt like the author was trying way too hard to emphasis all the things that happen during a pregnancy, and it felt really weird. There were other moments that felt highly specific too, like as if the person writing them had personal experience with pregnancy and wanted to put in those moments in detail.

The other thing I didn’t like was the mention the latest Wonder Woman franchise with Gal Galdot. Firstly I didn’t like it because it used characters from that to describe how a species of shifters lived which felt super unnecessary. The author could’ve just given us the description without adding that one single pop culture reference (something I hate in books). It was weird because it felt lazy and it was so out of place. And the other reason I didn’t like it is because I feel like in light of everything that’s been going on in Palestine that mentioning IDF solider Gal Gadot is just bad form. The author could’ve just mentioned the movie without mentioning the actor, or once again they couldn’t just explained what they wanted to say without using the crutch of a movie reference.

That one single moment in the middle of the book with the side character was so up my alley, and it’s almost convinced me that maybe I’ll still read the second book despite how many issues I had with this one.

I discovered Vinni George through their Open Doors series and when I saw they were putting out a PNR book as their next release I signed right up! Since it's my favorite subgenre of MM and I'd already enjoyed their contemporary romances I figured it was a safe bet I'd enjoy this book as well. Happily it turned out I was right!

I'd never read about a Narwhal shifter before so I was already intrigued from the get go. I mean Narwhals are unicorns of the sea! I found I liked both Jonah and Edwin equally and though the two had been acquaintances for 2 years, I would still classify this as insta-love. As soon as these two realized they were fated mates, that was it. What followed was a super steamy and slightly kinky shifter romance with some mpreg mixed in.

I also really liked the two side characters we see a lot of in the book. Both Everett and Merritt were quirky men and I can't help but think that those two must be meant for each other. The book ends with some questions regarding one of them which makes me think their own book is planned for a future release. Here's hoping!

It was just okay

It was a decent story. I do feel that it was a little long. I’m not gonna lie a little before the half or maybe around the half of the story I got bored. I was invested in the side characters love story then there love story . Like I said, I thought it was a little long and the pregnancy it was talked about, but still not the way I thought it was gonna be such a long story.

I adored the setup of this book and the unique shifters, it was interesting to see and the world building too. With the different types of shifters and their own ways of bonding, how these two come together and create something new. The alternating povs, the sweet and spicy elements it made for a fun read.

Edwin & Jonah's long for each other, the attraction and chemistry between them is stunning. Very insta feels, but fated mates and they have technically known each other a couple of years. Even while keeping separate from each other, the scenting and connection throughout in a way without knowing it's mutual obsession.

The steam is high and heated too, Edwins rather unique features as a narwhal shifter made for some interesting heated encounters. The mutual marking of each other, the biting and spiral image formed is incredible. The way Edwin has formed his home in a way that allows himself to shift into his Narwhal form comfortably, how these two still find way to share time together in their shifted forms.

Got to mention Meritt & Everett too, as I was enchanted by them both in this book and am eager to see their relationship develop. Merritt is possibly a new favourite for me, he was just so sweet and I'm curious to know more about the mystery of him. Everett is wonderful too and seems the perfect fit, excited to read their story some time as they go off on journey together.

I liked how it explores different shifting aspects was intriguing and a unique look into how adapted with their shifted form. It's not just random, there are various types which depending on does impact how they live and view things such as mates, I loved that.

The mpreg aspect is heavy towards the second half of the story, it's on page and the introduction to their child is wonderful. Glimpse to the future and all the family coming together, the rituals and the way Narwhal shifters developed is so fascinating - I really enjoyed those moments.

Overall this was simply an adorable, steamy and cuddly feel good type story. With a lovely happy ending for Edwin & Jonah ✨

I am SO happy to see that the author has turned this into a full length story!

I first read the short freebie that was online a few months back on a prolific works giveaway, and while I enjoyed the short story, I also felt like there was definitely more that could be told. If you read the short story and felt like you were left wanting, definitely pick this one up as there is a lot of story added to this and I really enjoyed the whole book. (also I feel like reviews for the short story alone shouldn't be taken into consideration. This story is like twice as long now)

Jonah is an omega lynx shifter and has been a housekeeper for Edwin for two years. Edwin is often out when Jonah comes to clean, so there is still a lot of mystery for them both about each other. However, when Jonah goes into heat while cleaning at Edwin's, the two wind up sharing an intense time together.

This book definitely gets points for unusual shifters. Edwin is a doctor and a narwhal shifter, and if you're thinking about the narwhal tusk, then yep. You got it LOL

I really loved Jonah and Edwin, both together and on their own. Jonah is such a sweetie and I really enjoyed them getting to know each other. There are definitely elements of insta-love/fated mates but they were so sweet and had great chemistry together that I was really okay with it all.

I am also now super invested in their friends - Everett, Edwin's friend and a beluga (I think) shifter, and Meritt, Jonah's friend who is a wolf shifter. They had a nice secondary role to fill but methinks that their story will be next! (It better be!!)

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars Straight away the blurb caught me intrigued with the story, but I don’t much read mpreg stories.
Jonah (🐈lynx cat) was working for a hot older doctor who’d hired him to clean house and had a crush on him.
Doctor Edwin 46 yrs (🐋 narwhal) intrigued Jonah wondering which shifter family.
A good story for the Doc and Jonah to finally relize they’re fated mates. Found family book theme. Hot knotting sexy scenes.

A very sweet, but steamy, mpreg, fated mates romance.

I've not read a lot of Vinni George's books, but they've been on my radar for a while, so when this came up in audio format, I jumped at the chance to listen to it. A great choice.

The narrator is new to me and had a lovely tone, fairly distinct voices for the characters, and a quality to the narration that kept me focused on the story. Sometimes the steamy moments can be offputting in audio, but this wasn't the case here.

As for the story, it's low angst with an accidental heat triggered by a few things. I really liked how things were explained. The author has clearly thought through the world-building and how everything works, so I never felt lost.

Both MC's were easy to relate to and even with their significant age gap, they worked well together. Their communication was top-notch, making the story just flow well.

The next book is nicely lined up and I hope it is available in audio format too.

Perfect if you just want an uncomplicated, steamy listen.

I really wanted to like this - the writing style was good and I like a fated mates story… but I personally think it would have been better if we got the story from the beginning (when they meet or along the way with some angst) cause this seemed rushed and flat. The instalove pretty much killed it for me, cause there was barely any page time before the “I love you” and that just doesn’t make sense to me🤷‍♀️

Would I say it’s BAD? No. Would I say I enjoyed it? Also no.

Also, they’re so POLITE to each other. 🙄

It started full of slick and lust and heat, breeding, pregnancy kink, and smut, and I thought it was going to stay like that for the whole book but I was surprised it was not. I would've loved less time jumps but if they wanted to show us the whole pregnancy there was no other way. It was cute.

**Audiobook Review** June 2024

This was great the second time around. Listening to the audio brought back the excitement I had when I first read the author's first adventure with mpreg/shifter. Absolutely loved it then and even more now. Jonah and Edwin connection was so intense and special, you felt it and couldn't help but cheer them on. What made this so good was definitely the narration. Declan Winters was great and gave all the feels to this audio. I'm glad I was given the chance to listen and recommend it to anyone who is enjoying the series.

Ebook Review October 2022

OMG Vinni!!!When you step out you step out...LOL...this mpreg was great. I read a lot of mpreg/shifter/alpha&omega romances and I thoroughly enjoyed your paranormal world. It was passionate, romantic, warm and inviting...very low on the angst scale(which I LOVE). Jonah and his hot older doctor Edwin had that instant connection that couldn't be denied...fated mates....LOVED IT! Glad I had an opportunity to read this because I would have sooooo disappointed if I missed out on something special and this series looks like it will be. 5STARS!!!!

This was my first time reading an MPREG novel. I am not usually a fan of pregnancy in general, but I enjoy Vinni’s writing and wanted to give it a chance.

Jonah is a kind soul who pines after the hot doctor he works for. Edwin is said hot doctor who is busy, allllll the time.

This novel is so spicy, like I had to find a snippet I enjoyed that wasn’t spicy and didn’t give too much away haha. So if you like less plot, more spice, this is a great pick for you. I give this one a strong four stars and I think it would be five if I liked pregnancy.

Jonah and the Narwhal
Land and Sea: A Shifter Series, Book 1
By: Vinni George
Narrated by: Declan Winters

I enjoyed this fated mates shifter romance novel immensely, the story is original with interesting storylines that are captivating from start to end. The characters are easy to relate with and connect with and I adored the two lead characters, Jonah Steele and Dr. Edwin Pictou, the two secondary characters, Merritt Lucas and Dr. Everett Vida, were great too. The shifter pairing is unique, Edwin, a Narwhal shifter and Jonah a lynx, Edwin was taken with Jonah the moment he saw him and the reason why he hired him to clean his house, he wanted him close. Something was changing with Jonah and triggering his heat, and it got more intense while in Dr. Pictou’s house, so it was a good thing he was a doctor and he could find out what was wrong. The doctor knew nothing was wrong, it was common to mate outside their species, but it happens and that is exactly what goes on here, but how will it work, no worries there the doctor is on it and he brings in his friend, Everett, who specialized in shifter genetic. There is never a dull moment in this book, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. The story has the perfect balance of drama, charming humor, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Vinni George, thank you for this fabulously entertaining story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧  The fabulously talented Declan Winters did an amazing job bringing these characters to life, understood who he was portraying, giving each their own distinct voice, making it easy to follow along and tell who was who. I loved how he took each role and made it his own, sounding believable and just as i imagined the characters to sound. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling each one. Winters is an entertaining storyteller and his performance elevates this story to another level. Thank you for another fabulous listen.
