Lars Kepler is the pseudonym of critically acclaimed husband and wife team Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril, authors of the No. 1 internationally bestselling Joona Linna series. With seven installments to date, the series has sold 13 million copies in 40 languages. The Ahndorils were both established writers before they adopted the pen name Lars Kepler, and have each published several acclaimed novels.
As the card carrying president of the Lars Kepler fan club, it is my duty to let you know that our favorite married writing duo is back with another winning installment in the Joona Linna series. Writing serial killer thrillers alongside your spouse must be the grandest form of couples therapy, and I think we should all find something that we can do with our partners to bond at this level. Whether or not you've begun the series from The Hypnotist or jumped in later with The Sandman, I do recommend having some previous experience with the series before reading The Rabbit Hunter. Not only are the individual cases being solved in each book fantastic, but the ongoing backstory that is developed within the reoccurring characters is exquisite as well.
Once again, we have the writing team's trademark short chapters, which provide a snappy, fast paced setting within a rather large page count. I think this alone is why I find myself blowing through these 500+ page novels so quickly; it's the quintessential experience of "just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed", until you realize it's 3 am and you've finished the entire book. The Rabbit Hunter also chugs forward with Joona and Saga's ongoing trials, and these dispersed between the hunt for a demented serial killer built a level of tension that few authors know how to achieve. I never seem able to solve the cases in these books before the big reveal, which is always a satisfying achievement, and The Rabbit Hunter was no different. Can we also acknowledge that no one can do the gasp inducing final page like Lars Kepler? If you're a fan of dark, gritty, and violent thrillers, you need to stop sleeping on this writing duo and devour their books. Come find me when you finish, and we can commiserate over having to wait for the next book, Lazarus, to be released.
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy!
In this sixth instalment of the Joona Linna series, Lars Kepler reminds readers what true Scandinavian psychological thrillers are meant to entail. When Sweden’s Foreign Minister is murdered by someone lurking in the shadows of his own home, the only witness to the event mumbles something that confuses authorities. Joona Linna, Sweden’s most prolific hunter of serial killers is not available to assist, having been sentenced to prison. However, no one is taking any chances and Linna is given a brief pass to aid in the investigation. When all presume the attack was terror-based, Linna promises to deliver a message from a suspected terrorist leader, in hopes that this will bring the case to a close. However, things go drastically wrong and Linna is back behind bars with no new answers. More murders occur, with this mysterious individual taunting victims by reciting an old children’s rhyme about rabbits. Swedish authorities remain baffled and cannot piece things together, knowing full well that their only hope is Joona Linna. The murders turn international and all eyes are on Sweden, forcing Linna’s release from prison in a negotiated settlement, which allows him to work on a plan he’s concocted. Could this ‘Rabbit Killer’ have a larger and more concrete plan when it comes to choosing victims? This spree of deaths seems to trace back decades, though once Linna pulls a thread, even he cannot know what will unravel. Kepler stuns readers again with a powerful psychological thriller that is not diluted in its translation. Recommended to series fans, who have had to wait a few years for this stunner, as well as those who like a little dark with their thriller reads.
I remember wondering about Lars Kepler a handful of years ago, having seen the books on shelves but never taking the leap. Once I accepted that I could try something that had not been penned originally in English, I was hooked by these books, which flirt with the mind as they pull the reader deeper into the story. Joona Linna has had much development within these novels, though he is also a very dark person and hard to admire. The fact that Kepler painted Linna into a corner and sent him off to jail did little to lessen the story’s impact, as he is able to spin his mind while incarcerated and ends up blowing the case wide open. Other characters prove to complement Linna well, giving that essential ‘tug of war’ sentiment that keeps the police procedural aspect of the story strong. Some of these ‘one time’ characters are also highly entertaining, providing the reader with some subplots that drive the story home, though nothing too earth shattering. Turning to the story itself, it was strong and flowed well, though I am having a hard time feeling as eerily connected as I had been to past Kepler novels. Perhaps I am inundating myself with psychological thrillers or Scandinavian dark novels, but I almost felt as if I wanted more scintillating aspects to leave me gasping. That being said, the book read so easily and the narrative was well-paced throughout. There was a seamless translation into English and, as I have said with all books in this series and many other Scandinavian dark pieces, it is as though the move to English fits the story like a glove. I could not ask for anything more and am so pleased to feel a connection throughout. Those looking for a series that will keep them up well into the night (both for the writing style and subject matter) need look no further.
Kudos, Lars Kepler, for another wonderful novel. I can see Joona Linna is in fine hands with you at the helm. And now I wait to see what else you have coming down the pipeline.
Joona Linda is a holds-no-bars, lead detective, just out of prison when he’s asked to solve a particularly dark serial crime involving the “Rabbit Hunter.” The connection between the crimes? The victims hear a rhyme about rabbits recited by a child. So creepy, right?
The Rabbit Hunter is the dark, creepy page-turner I was searching for. This is Scandi Noir at its best. I definitely plan to read the earlier books because I absolutely loved this. If you like your mysteries dark, hair-raising, and chilling, look no further!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.
This grisly addition to the Lars Kepler series featuring Detective Joona Lina and Superintendent Saga Bauer is my first introduction to the series. Lars Kepler is apparently a husband and wife writing team. In many ways I found this a difficult read and part of the reason I felt was that I should have read the series in order, there are numerous references to past events that on occasion I felt a little lost, so this is not great as a standalone. This Scandi-Noir thriller is an intensely twisted, brutal and brutalising affair that includes abuse. Joona Lina is to be found incarcerated in a high security prison after previous events. The high profile murder of a Swedish Foreign Ministers leaves law enforcement jittery and nervous as they have no idea of who is behind it and the city of Stockholm is living in fear. The Rabbit Hunter is a disturbed serial killer intent on making his victims suffer a slow death whilst playing a nursery rhyme. In an effort to stop the murders, Joona Lina is offered the chance to help Saga Bauer find the killer. However, following a terrorist lead ends badly until Lina begins to suspect that the motive behind the present day killings lie in the far distant past. I found this a bleakly atmospheric and unsettling compelling thriller, both a creepy and menacing introduction to the series for which you need a strong stomach. This is for those who love Scandi-Noir that treads desperately dark territory. Many thanks to HarperCollins for an ARC.
Yeah, no, I'm done. I was struggling through the final parts of the last Kepler, too, with all the ridiculous butchering that never seemed to stop. With this one, I read maybe a quarter, put it on the shelf and waited weeks before continuing - which isn't a good sign when it comes to books you're supposed to devour in one sitting. I finished it out of pure stubbornness.
This series isn't for me anymore. I've had it with the silly serial (or spree) killers (and don't get me started on the use of the actual term "spree killer" in the Norwegian translation), the unnecessary violence and sexual violence, and the long, dragged out descriptions of people meeting their grisly ends. Some people like these things; I don't. At this point in the series, they don't feel fresh anymore, either, just trying too hard.
I was already angry because of , and now ... I don't care? I feel no connection to any of the characters. If I have to read one more time about how Joona is always right or how much Saga looks like a fairy/princess, I'll get violent myself. The killer's motivations don't make sense - it seems like they should, because they are explained, but the killer's background, behavior, thoughts++ are so jumbled up and frankly inconsistent that even though we're told the killer's feeling/thinking/experiencing this or that, he never seems real.
When it comes to the plot, it's just confusing. I guess it speaks to the writers' skill that they're still making me turn the pages. I was sat there, half leaning over the book, shoulders clenched, like I do when things get really tense. It was fascinating, really, because the technique was driving me on, while I couldn't care less about what was happening. This need to read on was what got me into Kepler in the first place. Talk about books having a hook - feels like they lodge an actual hook into my rib cage and don't let go until the book is finished. It's not enough, though. I need characters to care about, and I need things to make sense, at least a reasonable-suspension-of-disbelief kind of sense. I like Joona and Saga, and I'd like to read more about them, but they don't feel like real people anymore.
I liked/enjoyed: Anja. I'd read books about Anja and her managing of the system/people around her. The relationship between Rex and Sammy
I really, really disliked: Grisly descriptions of sexual violence/sexualisation of characters Killing off or re-traumatising refugees as a red herring/to move the plot onward Ripping off famous novels without being self-aware about it. The epilogue.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review. I have not read the other books in this series but was so excited to get this book, I’m overlooking this dilemma!!!
A viscous killer called the rabbit hunter is stalking his victims in a cold brutal fashion. Loved this book and was fully immersed in this book and will definitely read the other books now!!
Not for the faint hearted as this is brutal and creepy but very well written and kept me on the edge of my seat!!
"The Rabbit Hunter" is the sixth outing in the series featuring Joona Linna and from what I can tell has been a very highly successful series too. Incredibly written by Lars Kepler - who is actually husband and wife team Alexander and Alexandra Ahndoril - this thriller is one mighty roller coaster of a ride that will guarantee you'll be leaving the lights on at night for sure. I've haven't been as scared reading a book since 'Intensity' by Dean Koontz and I have to praise the authors for creating such a feeling of fear so early on in a story that seriously gets the adrenaline moving. I was terrified for the young girl at the beginning and could truly sense the fear she was feeling as she ran through the house. We also get straight into meeting the 'rabbit hunter' early on and he is without doubt one cold blooded and heartless killer. There's a very intelligent and compelling plot running throughout the book too that contains action, emotion and very well developed characters and although this is very much an adult book due to its grisly content I do believe it will be thoroughly enjoyed by a huge audience and already established Lars Kepler fans. A fabulous and gripping book that I highly recommend and will certainly be looking to backtrack through the series to catch up on the brilliant Joona Linna! A terrifying but well deserved 5 stars!
Thank you to LoveReading for my copy of the book in return for an honest review.
As usual, Lars Kepler’s writing is gripping, shocking, and pure entertainment. I actually started the Joona Linna series a bit late—Stalker was my first venture into the series. With The Rabbit Hunter, I would definitely recommend getting acquainted with the series first. The first 50 pages of this book completely shook me to the core—that’s how juicy and scary it was! My only critique would be that this book is a little longer than necessary, and I wish it was cut a bit shorter. However, I loved the narrative and will of course venture through their next installment in this series!
This is the 6th book in the Joona Linna series by the joint authors known as Lars Kepler. I have enjoyed this series from the very beginning having read the previous five books which although obviously helped me in my familiarity of the characters was not a necessity required to appreciate this book. It seems like a long time since I read the other books but didn't take me long to get back in the swing of the writing. This book is not for everyone and maybe a little more gruesome and explicit that some of the other popular novels available. The book is quite a lengthy book at 850+ pages but I did not find it slow or tedious, in fact it was full of action, suspense and kept me gripped throughout. The book begins with the Swedish Foreign Minister been killed in strange circumstances. When the Security Police struggle to solve the mystery they decide to ask Joona Linna, a crime investigator who is serving time in a high security prison. Joona Linna is asked to track down the killer known as the rabbit hunter and in return will be released as a reward for his success. Linna is required to work fast as more victims are been killed and fear is growing in Stockholm streets. The only connection between the victims is that they all hear a child chanting a nursery rhyme about rabbits and exactly 19 minutes later, they are brutally murdered. Joona Linna's investigations all lead back to events that happened 30 years ago and the rabbitt hunter is now sadistically killing people who were there.
A well paced novel that flowed well and kept me gripped throughout.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Knopf for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I waited eagerly for this book, perhaps too eagerly, because I was a tad disappointed in it. I feel like the most interesting and important characters (Joona and Saga) were left largely to the background, and there was too much irrelevant stuff going on. I loved the tension, the violence and the creepyness of the story, but it was too easy to guess who the hunter was, so the end part of the book was a bit of a letdown. But it was nice to get to read again about Joona and Saga, and I hope that they spend more time together in the next book.
Joona Linna has spent two years in the closed Kumla prison when he is taken to a secret meeting. The police need his help to stop the enigmatic killer known as The Rabbit Hunter.
The only link between the victims is that they all hear the children recite a chant about rabbits before the killer comes. Television chef Rex Müller get for some reason pulled into the plot. For the first time ever is he taking care of his son Sammy. But instead of three quiet weeks will there be a terrible battle to the death. Joona Linna and Saga Bauer is forced to start working in secret to stop The Rabbit Hunter before it's too late.
You never know what fate has in store for you, what will catch up with you if you do not start running now.
Thriller Master Lars Kepler is back with a new page-turner about Inspector Joona Linna.
*********
The Rabbit Hunter is, amazingly enough, the first book I have read by Lars Kepler. As usual, lack of time is my excuse for having missed this amazing series. But, it gives me the advantage that I have five unread books to take on, and I can write a review based on a new fans point of view.
So how was The Rabbit Hunter? It felt very easy to get into this book, despite it being the latest book in a series. Since the story itself was standalone with recurring characters made it easier for a new reader like me to get a grip on both the story and the main characters Joona Linna and Saga Bauer. The story was interesting throughout and with short cliffhanger chapters was the book hard to put down. The motive for the murders stretching back in time and it's something I always like, to follow the characters as they try to find out the truth. And in this case, it was all that terrible tragedy that started it all
All in all, the book was a real hit, I liked both the plot and the characters, and I look forward to reading the previous books.
Ok, so: Joona is in prison but is unofficially recalled to the police force to help solve a series of brutal murders. In each case, the victim is killed after nineteen minutes of suffering, only after listening to an altered nursery rhyme over the telephone. This twisted children’s song, now telling the story of how ten little rabbits all went to hell, serves as a chilling connection between the murders. Meanwhile, a celebrity chef is trying to overcome his alcohol addiction and reconnect with his teenage son, unaware of the role he’s about to play in the homicides. The two storylines collide in the most bizarre, unexpected ways, twisting the case into a complex and gripping tale full of surprises—right up until the very end.
I was especially excited to see more of Saga Bauer, though she didn’t work closely with Joona on this case. She’s fascinating to me: strong yet grounded, brave, intelligent, and wonderfully stubborn, with excellent character development. Joona is equally compelling—a rare instance of a Scandinavian crime protagonist who remains calm, kind, and resourceful. He’s less a detective archetype and more a nuanced human being. Unlike many main characters in Nordic crime fiction, he’s not overly special, isn’t battling addiction, and doesn’t feel entirely broken, despite having his fair share of stereotypical tragic past experiences.
I’d love to see more of Joona and Saga working together, even in their distant but brilliantly effective way. I’m keeping my hopes up for the next books in the series. I can’t wait to get my hands on Lazarus!
I always love to read Lars Kepler novels, the Joona Lina Series, this time with Saga Baueronce again.
Very good reading, not as exciting as the previous ones. Crime, police investigation and nordic mystery, what else ? I absolutely love their writing style and the way they tell the story. I do recommend to read this one, thou 😊 4 stars
Not sure if it is just this book, or if Joona is overstaying, but I wasn't really in it as with previous books. I started having this feeling with the last book Stalker. Crime isn't, as I've said before, my genre, and I sort of rolled on my surprise at how good I've found the earlier books to be. I might give Lazarus a chance. After that I'll see if I read the eighth book if and when it's released.

5 AMAZING STARS. Thank you so much to Knopf for this stunning finished copy of THE RABBIT HUNTER by Lars Kepler! You guys... This book was fantastic 🙌🏼 I have been looking forward to Kepler’s newest release for so long now and there’s no surprise here that I absolutely loved it! One of the many things I loved about this book was Kepler’s writing style. There’s just something about their writing that I love SO much and I am always instantly pulled in to every single one of their stories. Not only do I love the writing, but I also love the main protagonists and I will never get tired of reading about them! Joona and Saga are my absolute favorites and I hope there are many more Joona Linna books to come 🖤 Another thing I loved about this book was how insane it was right from the beginning. When I say this book takes crazy and terrifying to the next level, I mean it 😳 This book is all out GORY and it’s definitely the most graphic out of all the Kepler books that I’ve read, but you guys already know I loved every second of it 😝🔪 Plot wise, the way everything unfolded was absolutely incredible. I am always so immersed in Kepler’s stories and this one was no exception. I will say, the first 150 pages or so were very political and I initially wasn’t a fan of that, but it all came together in the end and I am so happy it ended up going in the direction that it did 🤓 TRIGGERS: Rape, Animal Violence (not too explicit but mentioned) Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this book to you guys! If you love dark, twisted, and gory crime novels, you need to pick this one up ASAP 🙌🏼 THE RABBIT HUNTER is out TODAY so make sure to go grab a copy! 🕵🏼♀️🖤
I have become a woman obsessed. I am proud to say I am obsessed with the Joona Linna series by the amazing author duo Lars Kepler. Ever since I read THE SANDMAN in 2018 I have been stalking @crimebythebook for the next release! I read THE STALKER next and now THE RABBIT HUNTER - WOW, just WOW. Every book I have read by them is OUTSTANDING.
I’m not sure if you caught Abby’s interview with Kepler yesterday but it just made me love them even more. How does this lovely, sweet couple write such dark material? Again, OBSESSED.
I am not going to go into the plot details because as a reader, I prefer to go in blind but just know I am super picky with police procedurals. Although, I love a good formulaic television show, I expect more from the novels I read. Every book I’ve read by Kepler has delivered 100%. Also, one of best qualities about the Joona Linna series is every book can be read as a standalone. I get intimidated by a large series because I like my reading to be versatile. This answered every wish and made me dive right in. And even though I will read the entire series, I wasn’t intimidated in the least.
THE RABBIT HUNTER is gritty with a compelling plot, characters you can sink your teeth into including an ultra dark villian, and short chapters that help you breeze through the just over 500 pages. It’s a violent serial killer thriller that I wholeheartedly recommend. Do not hesitate to pick this book up.
This is the sixth book of the Joona Linna series, but it’s the first one I’ve read and it can easily stand on its own. Now my interest is piqued and I must start at Book One, The Hypnotist. I always enjoy Swedish crime dramas, and this husband and wife writing team going by the pseudonym “Lars Kepler” certainly cranks out a taut thriller. Joona is currently serving time for assaulting a police officer when he’s summoned by the Swedish prime minister and offered a deal he simply can’t refuse: work the case, reduce your sentence. The case is a list of unrelated murders, but some of the methodologies of the crimes show it may be a serial killer. What could these victims have in common, though? They span from one level of income and upbringing to the other. As Joona and his partners try to find the common thread, the killer continues with a vengeance, carrying out the crimes in various unusual and cruel ways. As a mental sketch begins to form, Joona realizes he’s grasping at straws but all other leads are coming up fruitless. This brings in my favorite aspect of this story: the reasoning that drives the killer would make anyone crazy. Not that the killer is justified, but it does add a sincere layer of compassion to the entire bloody plot. Well done, you clever Keplers! (I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you to Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group and NetGalley for making it available.)
Su šita knyga įvyko fun story. Būtent nuo jos įstojau į detektyvo Jono Lino seriją 🙈😅 Nepaisant to ši man taaaaip patiko.. Šita knyga man labai labai patiko, nepaisant to, kad ji viena žiauriausių. Na kol kas. Žudikas mums atskleidžiamas ganėtinai anksti, bet neskubėkite ploti katučių, ji dar reikia pagauti.. O jis to nori mažiausiai, juk planas dar nebaigtas.
