The Pink House

Rate this book
Deep in the forest, on a sun-drenched patch of lush green grass, surrounded by lily-of-the-valley, sits a pink house. With turrets towering like neighboring trees, and a wide welcoming front porch, the old Victorian is impossible to miss. Except that everyone in town has—everyone but Hannah Danbury.

It’s been a year since Hannah’s husband, Brian, lost his battle with cancer, just days before his thirtieth birthday. Over and over again Hannah has been told it’s time to move on. Trouble is, she’s not sure how. When her company downsizes and Hannah finds herself out of work, she moves back home to GraceTown, Maryland.

Hannah isn’t sure exactly what she’s hoping to find in GraceTown, but a mysterious pink house no one but her has ever seen isn’t it. Nor does she expect the woman living in the house—someone unknown yet still familiar to Hannah--to present her with a gift: a handwritten letter from Brian.

Who is the woman in the pink house? How did she get the letter? What is Hannah meant to do with all it reveals?

Answering these questions will lead Hannah to places—and people—she never could have imagined.

This is a well-written, entertaining, contemporary romance novel. It has likable and engaging characters, the sadness of loss, a touch of fantasy, a heartwarming, sweet romance, a magical pink house, and an inspirational message. The author's note is touching, and is truly appreciated. This is the first entry in Ms. Kirk's GraceTown series. I am looking forward to reading the next novel with great anticipation.
I won this novel in a Fresh Fiction contest, and this is my honest opinion.

Hannah’s husband, Brian, dies quickly and young. It’s a true, deep love and she is deeply heartbroken and hurting. She also gets sacked from her job. On a leap of faith, her dad moves to Florida and leaves her her childhood home. Lots of memories. Alas, memories of her mom, whom she really did not know, as her mom died early in life. While the house bring back fond memories, it also adds to her pain and grief. She immersed herself into this new life. It’s difficult and she’s doing the best she can.

Next door lives Charlie with his mom. Charlie is/was Brian’s best friend. There’s romantic interest - sparks happening. Each is well aware of Brian’s death and love and friendship and the thing is, is it too early to find love again? To let it in? Will it be the same kind of deep love for Hannah? Can she love Charlie when initially she did not even like him?

It’s hard to get answers from a grieving heart, but there’s a pink house in the forest that comes and goes with a wise, comforting woman on the porch. What she offers helps Hannah to move on her way, to get unstuck in her deep grief and achieve her dreams and balance her life and love.

I loved Hannah and Charlie’s banter. They were really funny together and I enjoyed watching their friendship grow.

People jumping to conclusions about how or why someone else is living their life the way they are has always frustrated me. I completely understood Charlie’s annoyance whenever he told someone that he was currently living with his mother, they just assumed that Charlie was still at home as a freeloader. People kept making assumptions about Hannah’s life too. Things like people believing that her husband must have been a smoker if he died from lung cancer, or that Hannah should be able to move on from the loss of her husband by now.

Charlie was usually so good at understanding what Hannah wanted or needed from him. I hate how the author changed this about Charlie near the end just to get the story to the climax. Charlie thought he understood how Hannah’s grief towards Brian manifested and where she stood with moving forward, but that was during normal day to day living. Of course Brian would be more at the forefront of her mind, and grieving more intensely over the loss, the day of their anniversary. It’s strange to me that Charlie couldn’t put those pieces together, and know to back off that day. He needed to leave her alone to grieve in her own way.

The Pink House is the first in a new series by Cindy Kirk and is an amazing story of overcoming loss and finding love and happiness again. I had initial hesitations about reading a story that goes into the supernatural territory.... However, I totally immersed myself into the characters, the effects of a loss of major dimensions, leading me down a path that grabbed me from start to finish. I really loved Hannah's story. Her character was handled with great sensitivity in how she was dealing with overwhelming grief and life changes. The way the pink house was woven into her story was very affective and not over-the-top "supernatural". What gentle, loving and compassionate characters inhabit this evolving and satisfying story. This is a beautifully written story which shows that everyone grieves in their own way and time, and that there is no set time for finding love again.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own. (less)

I absolutely loved this first story in a new series from Cindy! I'm a big fan of paranormal elements in books (when done right). Hannah's story right from the beginning is heartbreaking and you're pulled to her and wanting the best for her. Seeing her and Charlie's interactions just makes you smile, the way they grieve and help heal each other is beautifully done.

I received am advanced reader copy from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. Thank you Cindy and Waverly House.

I agree with the other readers- too much romance, not enough pink house and what it stands for!

This book had so much potential, and I was disappointed. Too many words spent on useless detail while significant points are glossed over. For example, the little outing to the fair- not at all necessary to the story- got more attention than the description of the house!

Too much repetition- some concepts are just drawn out and the author just beats us over the head with them.

Hannah didn’t get to go INSIDE the house. Who were the other people on the porch with Maisie the first time she went to the house, how the hell did Maisie get the letter. So much potential but instead the reader gets to hear all about the city
politics of GraceTown’s farmers market and parking in the historic district (eyeroll).

I would have loved to read more about Hannah, her ambition, her relationship with her father, things that came up as she cleaned out her childhood home, etc.

Some of the characters we could have completely done without.

OMG – Love this new book and hope it becomes a series! Cindy has outdone herself with this book. Woke up with feelings of losing someone special, but the characters here were special. This is about Hannah and Charlie. Hannah lost her husband to cancer way too soon and then was laid off from the job she thought she would climb the ladder. Although she lost her mother when she was a baby, her father always gave her everything he could, now she is moving back home as she needs to start over. Unknown to her that her neighbor is Charlie and his mom. Her dad moved on with his life and remarried, which is a bit questionable, as it did not seem that he was fully happy, but that is another story. Hannah decided to go for a walk in the wood behind her home, and she came across a pink house, something she had always dreamt about when she was a kid. This house is special because the second time she comes across it, she talks to one of the women there and then receives a special letter, unknowing of who this woman is but the letter has her late husband’s handwriting. Ohhhhh, how I loved this. It kept me intrigued until I completed the book and couldn’t wait for the next book. This is a bit different than her normal stories, but still heart-worthy - I loved it.

Cindy Kirk is bringing us to a new place, Gracetown. Here we meet Hannah Danbury who just moved into her father’s home after he and his new wife move to Florida. Hannah has faced two different losses recently, her job and her husband to cancer. She moves to Gracetown (her childhood hometown) as a way to maybe start fresh. Her husband Brian was from there as well, but they didn’t get together until college.

She finds that Brian’s beat friend now live next door with his mother. She has been sick so he moves in to take care of her. Hannah wasn’t too fond of Charlie in the past. She starts to get to know him more and more. They become united after Hannah walks in the woods and finds the Pink House where Maisie lives. She befriends Maisie, but Maisie and The Pink House are only seen by Hannah. It took me a little to catch on, but I did before Hannah. Maisie gives her some advice that helps her make major life decisions. She helps her to understand that grieving is a process.

My own mom has been gone for quite some time. I thought I had dreamt that she was in my home a few days before my dad passed away. I don’t believe it was a dream anymore - I believe she was relly there to offer comfort, so I can relate a bit to this story.

I have received an advanced reader’s copy.

A fantastic new series from Cindy. I was totally captivated by Hannahs story, she has suffered so much after being widowed and then losing her job while still grieving. She moves back to Gracetown when her father gives her the home she grew up in. Charlie who was her husbands best friend she discovers lives next door.

When Hannah discovers a pink house in the woods that reminds her of her imaginary house she had as a child, she passes by the first time she finds it without meeting the women she can see on the porch but when she can't find it the next day she continues to try and find it .

Hannah finds the Pink House again and meets Maisey and its like she feels an instant closeness with her. Maisey somehow has a letter to her from Brian her late husband and starts to do some of the things he's written he wished he could have done with her. Charlie who Hannah was very unsure of seems to be the only one who she can talk about Brian with. As they grow closer Hannah feels very guilty about her feelings for him and pulls back from him. The last bit of the book covers Hannah meeting up with Maisey again and her realisation that there is no right way to decide if she's ready for more.
I recommend this book it's a bit different from Cindy's other books

This book was an unexpected treasure. I was expecting a typical romance story but this one rose to a different level!

The story is told from Hannah’s perspective and begins a year after she loses her husband. She decides to move back into her childhood home where she plans to gradually rebuild her life. She is surprised to discover her husband’s best friend lives in the house next door. He is very helpful and they end up spending a lot of time together. He starts to fall for her but Hannah feels uncertain about building a permanent relationship with him.

Meanwhile on an afternoon walk, Hannah discovers a beautiful pink house she has never seen before. She meets Maisie, who surprisingly gives her a letter from her husband.

There is more to this story but I don’t want to ruin it for any future readers. The author’s endnote reveals her touching motivation behind writing the story.

Be sure to grab your copy of this captivating story that will keep you turning the pages!

Hannah Danbury has lost her husband and her job and decided to move back to her hometown. Her life is in upheaval, and she feels uncertain. She has always wanted to become a baker, but she is unsure. Her new next-door neighbor is a handsome man from her past. He seems interested but she’s scared. So, one day, Hannah decides to take a walk through the wooded area beside her house. That one walk will change her life, and her view. When she finds the Pink House, everything will change.
Ms. Kirk is a gifted writer who always teaches me something in every book she writes. The theme of this book is, “Falling in love again isn’t disrespectful to the one who’s gone, but a tribute to them.” Very well said. Reading her books always leaves my heart lighter, and my world a little brighter. This book should be read by everyone who loves an enchanting romance.

Everyone deals with loss differently whether it is a family member or a spouse. Hannah lost her mother when she was very young and she had an imaginary pink house that had everything she did not including a mother. As an adult she loses her husband to cancer and is down-sized at her job which is the perfect time for her to move hometown and live in her childhood home. In the forest behind her house she sees a pink house at times when she most needs it and it turns out to hold all that she will need to move forward in her life.

THE PINK HOUSE is the first book in my GraceTown series. The fictional community of GraceTown, Maryland is a setting for the unexplainable. In this book, it's a pink house in the woods that no one else but Hannah Danbury can see.

When my daughter was small, she had an imaginary pink house. In that house was everything she ever wanted. In Hannah's case, this house will give her what she so desperately needs.

What a well-written book about figuring out who you are after life takes unexpected changes!!! As a recently unemployed widow, Hannah has moved back to her childhood home … reconnecting with people she previously knew. However, much to Hannah’s surprise not everyone is what she originally perceived. Then one day she meets the woman in the pink house, then little by little Hannah comes to meet her challenges on her own terms! How wonderful if everyone had a pink house in their life!!!

This was an easy to read romantic novel that had some supernatural elements that I found intriguing. Cindy Kirk has penned a great start to a new series filled with hope, love and new beginnings and located in the town of GraceTown, Maryland.

Hannah Danbury has had a year of losses. She lost her husband Brian to cancer and then she was let go from her job due to down-sizing. She has now moved back to GraceTown. Her father who relocated to Florida has very graciously given the family home to Hannah. She is struggling to build a new life and career in her old hometown. Surprisingly enough she finds out that her husband’s former best friend, Charlie Rogan, is her neighbor. Charlie was never one of her favorite people when she knew him in High School. As Hannah is working at reconnecting with former friends from her hometown and making her family home her own, she often takes walks and on one of the walks in the woods, she comes upon a large pink house with women sitting on the porch. She didn’t have time to stop and chat but after questioning acquaintances from the town, she discovers that no one has ever seen or heard of a pink house in the woods.

Charlie and Hannah keep running into each other and end up spending a lot of time together. Hannah’s feelings are slowly changing toward him. She fights an attraction but can’t help but admire him for the way he cares for his mother who has MS. He is an all round great guy. He doesn’t make fun of her when she brings up the Pink House and he listens patiently as she shares her thoughts. They both hold back because they feel moving forward would be a betrayal to Brian. Fortunately, after getting to know Maisie of the Pink House and finding answers and closures with the kind words and Brian’s letter that she shares with Hannah, she is able to move on.

There is so much to love about this story. The romance is swoon worthy and I loved how they worked through the grieving process. It is different for everyone and the insight and wisdom gained from this story was enlightening. I highly recommend this wonderful story. Hannah lost the love of her life. Her husband, Brian, died and then she was laid off from a job she loved. Now she has returned to her home town. Her widowed father has remarried and moved to Florida. He has left the family home to Hannah. The town of Grace Town is familiar but different. The home is exactly the same, which is not what Hannah wants for her future. But, she is here and she will make a new life for herself, no matter what.
Charlie was her late husband’s best friend. When they were in school Charlie and Brian were popular and Hannah was not in their group. After her marriage, Hannah never really liked Charlie. Now she finds that Charlie lives right next door. His mother is ill and they live together in order that he can take care of her and make certain she is safe. Charlie and his mother offer friendship. At first Hannah is not sure about accepting that offer. But kindness wins out eventually.
During a hike in the woods, Hannah sees a large Victorian pink house. No one else has ever seen this house. On the porch of this house there is a woman who waves at Hannah. She is not confident enough to go forward. But, she is intrigued. Everyone doubts Hannah really saw any house. Charlie never doubts her.
This is a book which allows the reader to become familiar with Hannah and her hopes and dreams. She has ideas about her past. She is pretty certain that she wants her future to be different. She wants to take the opportunity to try new things. No one seems to be supportive of her new ideas except Charlie.
I liked this story very much. The small town of Grace Town provides the reader with friendly neighbors, interesting situations and a feeling that the town holds secrets.
I received this book from the author in the hope that I would write a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed here are completely my own. This story is the first in a series and I like the idea of future stories.

I was so excited to be able to get in on the start of a new book series by Cindy Kirk, Gracetown. No playing catch up with this series. The Pink House focuses on Hannah Danbury and her struggle to cope and carry on with her life after the tragic, unexpected death from cancer of her loving husband Brian. As she struggles to carry on, there is a unexpected downsizing of her job. So now she is a grieving widow with no job.

She uses this opportunity to move back to the town she grew up in Gracetown MD and it was an ideal time as her father and his wife is moving out of state to a retirement community. This gives her the opportunity to move in to her childhood house that she was raised in by her widowed father after the early death of Hannah’s mom. Upon arrival with belongings in tow, she finds that her next door neighbor, Charlie, is actually the high school best friend of her dead husband Brian. A person in which Hannah surprisingly knows little of.

Can Charlie be one to help Hannah get through her grief? Will Hannah allow her heart to be opened up again to love. What about the Pink house with the older women named Maisie in the forest that Hannah ran up on in one of her first walks to try to clear her head. Why is it she cannot always find that house and no one that she asks knows of this “Pink House”. Will this house and Maisie be part of the answer for Hannah to get on with her life? Lots of questions to be answered in this book that will definitely keep your attention.

The Pink House is the first in a new series of books by Good Hope author Cindy Kirk. I was really looking forward to reading this book as it goes into one of my favourite topics - the supernatural. I was not disappointed.
This book tells the story of Hannah who has moved back to her hometown after her husband suddenly passed away. She moves into her father's house - he & her stepmother have moved to Florida, right next door to her husband's best friend Charlie.
Hannah has been retrenched from her job & is a current state of flux not knowing whether to continue in the field she was in or follow her heart & become a baker. With time on her hands, Hannah goes for a walk in the woods behind her house. This is where she comes across The Pink House with women on the front verandah. Hannah finds it weird that she has never seen the house before, so she returns the next day but is unable to find the house.
During another visit to the woods, Hannah meets Maisie who lives in the pink house. She & Hannah get talking about life etc & find that they get along. Maisie eventually gives her a letter from Brian, her dead husband. Hannah recognizes Brian's handwriting & wonders how it ended up with Maisie.
I love reading Ms Kirk's books & like all of her other books, couldn't put it down. So many questions to be answered such as where did the Pink House come from & how did Maisie end up with a letter from Brian? I highly recommend reading this book not only for the answers to the questions but to lose yourself in an enchanting romance novel about second chance love & grief.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy and am voluntarily reviewing it. Hannah Danbury moved back to her hometown, Gracetown, after being laid off from her job. Her job and friends were the only things trying her to Greensboro. Brian, her husband, died a year ago and her dad moved to Florida with his new wife. Hannah’s childhood home was available and ready for a new move with new possibilities.

Hannah’s next door neighbors just happen to be Brian’s best friend, Charlie Rogan and his mom. Charlie’s mom has MS and he lives with her to help should she need it. Hannah and Charlie become fast friends and she has no problem sharing with him that she saw a pink house in the woods. After questioning other neighbors, Hannah realizes that she is the only one that has seen this house. As a little girl, Hannah had an imaginary pink house that had everything she needed or wanted. This house became her sanctuary after her mother died.

This book is not long yet Cindy Kirk gives readers everything they need in more. A woman dealing with the death of two special people in her life. Her mother and her husband. A friendship that could possibly turn into romance if Hannah can get over thoughts of betraying Brian. Hannah’s emotions are palatable. Readers will feel them throughout their soul and eventually come to understand them. On top of all that, readers also get a mystery with the Pink House.

I hope we get to spend some time in Gracetown to get to know more of the people there.

Sometimes you have to lose the one you love to find the one you love.

This book left me speechless. It’s a wonderful new story from Cindy Kirk about Hannah, Charlie and a pink house.

Hannah is recently widowed and moves from Greensboro back to her hometown of GraceTown. On her first hike through the woods, she sees a pink house. Yet everyone she talks to in town knows nothing about nor has ever seen this pink house.

Charlie was the best friend of Hannah's husband, Brian. She never really knew Charlie, yet she seemed to put up with him since he was Brian’s best friend.

Mysteries, gifts and wondrous things happen when Hannah finds the pink house again. Hannah is reminded to take time to appreciate not only the people in her life , but the beauty around her.

This is a book that I feel everyone can relate back to situations in their lives. I loved it and I hope you do as well.

Came for the pink house in the woods that no one else could see. Was it magic? Fantasy? A mental breakdown? I was going to stick around and find out.

That being said, I don't think this was for me.

To be fair, I'm not usually a fan of romance, so I may just not be the demographic for this book. The male lead felt very "He's not like other men... he listens... and has a good relationship with his mom."

"She was the picture of elegance and beauty. That might be what everyone saw at first glance, but Charlie had learned that there was far more to Hannah than a pretty face and killer body." This was to show you that Charlie likes Hannah for her personality... obviously.

Also, it's not just that Charlie is 6'1 with broad shoulders...

“Charlie is really down-to-earth. By that, I mean he’s not into the latest fashions or fancy cars. He likes jeans, T-shirts and his truck.” Hannah chuckled. “Though he’s very accomplished and super smart, he doesn’t feel the need to impress anyone.”

These just didn't feel like things people actually think or say.

Also, I actually didn't mean to be such a hater, but here I am.

In my opinion, the writing seemed to do more telling than showing. Like here is Character A, they are going through Struggle B. I wanted the struggle and the emotion to be expressed more than to be told that it was happening. Maybe I'm just too "angsty" for this type of book. But yeah, I needed more of the introspective moments that came with the pink house.

The Pink House is a book about grieve and loss, but also learning how to rebuild and gain happiness. It is the first book of a new series by Cindy Kirk.

The story is of Hannah. Hannah married her husband young after they graduated college. They focused their lives in their jobs and thought about having a family while their careers were going well. The plan was going fine until her husband got sick and passed away shortly after he was diagnosed.

Fast forward 12 months, Hannah is let go of her job and moves back to her home town of Grace Town. Her father gifts her the family home as he moves away with his new wife.

Hannah has so much to do. What will she do for work? How soon is too soon to start having feelings for someone new? Update her childhood home to make it her own

While she is trying to figure things out she finds a Pink House in the woods. She finds comfort there with the women who lives there but it isn’t always there when she tries to find it. She also starts building a friendship with the next door neighbor (her husband’s best friend growing up).

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but this book was such a good story! I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next book in the series to get released!
