Building By The Book

Rate this book
In all, "Building by the Book" reflects a thorough study in what is probably a neglected period of building, whereby middle class owners were enabled to build architect-designed homes which would otherwise have been reserved for the wealthy. Pattern books also provided direction for local builders.

For years I had wondered about the houses I passed. Why were some so similar, yet not quite the same? Where did the designs come from? Growing up in the northeast, I saw various styles and was curious about their origins, what was a style called, who brought the ideas to the builder, and so forth.
“Building By The Book” is a great way to answer those questions, and to find out about our (not only New Jersey) history. A fascinating book that I would recommend to anyone interested in our community and homes.
