Leo has been evading Lady Death’s grip his entire life. First fighting in the merciless Tominese arenas and then becoming the most feared mercenary in the country, the unnatural powers that have made him into a ruthless killer are the same that prohibit his very existence under the royal laws of Tominay. Though they will always be hunted, he protects his brothers and sister with his every breath, because allowing death to take them away has never been an option.
Now they must run, or face their worst nightmares…
When Leo’s employer finds out his younger brother holds the same power that made him into an invaluable weapon, they must make a long-awaited decision: to stay and risk slaughter, or to flee their home in search of a new life.
Will they survive the journey, or fall fighting for their freedom?
It’s a battle for survival as the siblings chase the land of their people in the hopes of a better future. Though they try to outrun it, the demons of the past never cease to haunt them, and the trials of the future hold more terror than can be imagined. But will the journey truly lead to the salvation they crave, or walk them straight to the bloody end they fear?
Ayla Marie is a first-year Canadian university student whose love for fantasy started when she was twelve and hasn’t dulled since. She has a profound admiration for all genres of literature and loves to dissect the complex meanings hidden beneath simple phrases. World building and heart-wrenching character plots have always been her favorite to read, and she works tirelessly to perfect them in her writing to give her readers the whirlwind stories she has always loved. Though reading, writing and studying take up most of her time, Ayla is always up for an adventure with friends and family, discovering little pieces of the world day by day. She loves to play sports, sit in nature, and take in the wonders of everyday life so that she can write intricate tales that lift off the page and come alive.
Ayla started her debut novel The Blood Prince with the goal of creating a unique story filled with action, woeful tribulations and unbreakable family bonds. The second book of The Blood Prince trilogy, The Uncrowned King, was released sixteen months later.
This novel, the first in a series, has no right being as good as it is.
Independently published authors don't create works as well written as traditionally published authors, right? Their covers aren't as good. The editing is no good. And it's going to take at least three or four books to get something written that has a decent plot and characters, and the author finally develops some small measure of writing ability, right?
Right?
Ayla Marie is living proof that this is not the case. I'm quite picky with my fantasy. I don't enjoy a lot of it, but when the author gets it right, I really enjoy it.
This novel? I really enjoyed this. Let's dig in to the story a bit.
The novel dives right in and exposes us to Leo and his rather large family, of which he's the eldest. I will say, there's stuff aluded to, or mentioned, that the reader has no context for. Trust me when I say, Marie makes it all make sense as we go.
The plot spins out, and mysteries are highlighted, and some are exposed, revealing deeper mysteries underneath. New characters come in that aren't who they seem to be. There's three four things I want from any story and, though each sounds reasonably common, I will say it's quite uncommon to see them all done well.
I want: - A good plot that makes sense and holds up logically. - Good characters who are not one-dimensional. - Good motivations for those characters that pushes them through the story. - An author that can give me a sense of wonder as I read.
This book delivers on all of those, while also offering up great writing, great dialogue, and questions that I need answers for.
If I have any complaints, it's exactly two...
The first is the single grammatical error I found in the novel (though it shows up twice) and it's the use of the the word "taught" when it should be "taut"...
The only other thing—and this comes down to more personal preference than anything—is that some of the character names aren't as distinctive as they should be. There's Cael, Cass, and Cassien, and there's Elana (sometimes Ella), and Emrys.
But for a 400+ page novel? Those are minor.
I loved this book, and I'm about to purchase the next one in the series...and do my best to not be jealous of an indie author a third of my age who's already writing circles around most of the authors I know.
This is a dark YA fantasy novel that follows Leo, an young man with supernatural abilities who works as a mercenary to care for his young siblings. Living under the oppressive royal laws of Tominay, Leo's powers make him both a valuable weapon and a target. When his younger brother is discovered to have similar powers, the family is forced to flee.
This fantasy offers a unique take on the genre, focusing on intense family dynamics and a gripping struggle for survival. The world-building is intriguing, though at times a bit clumsy, and the writing style reflects the author's youth but also her potential.
The story doesn't shy away from its dark themes, making it a compelling story that does not let up on the tension. The magic system is minimally explained, leaving me with some questions about its mechanics, but I'm sure that more explanation is coming in subsequent books.
Despite its imperfections, the story held my attention, and I’m eager to see how the story and the author’s craft develop in future books. The emphasis on family ties amidst a harsh, unforgiving world makes this a standout in the dark fantasy genre. Really enjoyed it!
Thanks to Hidden Hollow Book Tours and the author for the copy and the opportunity to read and review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
This book was a feast for the eyes and soul literally. I loved how good and intelligent the writing was. I was very much hooked, and intrigued as I read. I could not put this gem down. Very much enjoyed it.
What I enjoyed very much was the character development. Leo came a long way from when I was first introduced to him. He stood for many things, family, independence, and honor. He was strong willed. But even the strongest of us have our weak points. I loved the relationship he had with his bother. Quite commendable. Outside the family love, enjoyed the epic danger they faced together. The descriptive uses of the words by the author really made a visual effect strongly on myself as the reader. The book had its intense moments and moments where it held you in deep suspense. I was in anticipation through out my reading, Loved it truly from start to finish. I look forward to reading more by this author!
Amazing book which held a very intelligent story and well dine writing. For sure not one to be passed up for any cause. I highly recommend this must read book. Do not pass it up! Well wroth a read! Loved it!
“Lady Death is merciful, but I am not, so I suggest you take a second to think whether you value your life.”
This YA fantasy is perfect for lovers of morally gray characters and family bonds, both found and by blood. I would recommend checking the content warnings as there are some pretty heavy things in here though.
I really enjoyed all the members of the Hael family at the center of this story. I enjoyed seeing how morally gray the two eldest were and seeing how far they would go to protect their siblings. Leo in particular could be especially terrifying when he slipped into his persona as the Blood Prince.
So many terrible things happen to them in the book, but their bonds are beautiful to witness. Even though one brother is adopted, they make sure to remind him that he is also family. It makes the events of the second half of the book even more heartbreaking.
There isn’t any explicit romance, although there are hints at the beginnings of a relationship that brought some light to the darkness.
I thought this was an interesting world although I wish it had been explained a little more as there were certain aspects I remained confused about. I’ll be interested to see how it is expanded upon in future books.
Thanks to the author for the copy of the book, all opinions are my own.
This was an amazing read! I feel like I haven't read a book this immersive in a while. The beginning was a little slow, and it took several chapters and some intrigue for me to really get invested but wow! I felt like I was right there with the siblings the whole time. The world building is just incredible in this book. The gorgeous cover drew me in but the immersive writing made me stay. I highly recommend reading this one if you're a fan of fantasy! Slight trigger warning on blood, violence and some abuse though so be wary if you have those triggers. I can't wait to see what happens next!
After Leo's parents die. As well as enduring black mail from his boss to be a mercenary to protect his siblings life. Leo finds a letter from his mother and they flee to find a better place to live. Everyone assumes Leo dies because of what they witnessed. Once Leo is back in the fold. They all have to flee once again.
Leo has had a rough life with what he is. He doesn't regret it though as he watches and protects his family. What he doesn't realize is his younger brother ends up being like him. Now his family is on the run from demons who want to use his family. So much happens in this book, and it's so great how smoothly it goes. Can't wait for the next book if there is one!
This book intrigued me from the cover. I love how there are different perspectives in this book. The author knew how to make you want more and more. From the dialect to the attention to detail. I could not put it down. I was shocked by how amazing the plot to this book was. I highly recommend this.
Leo is a young man who has supernatural talents, he is a mercenary and is known as “the Blood Prince” because of the colour of blood which sweeps into his eyes whenever he has to complete a job, or fight an adversary who has taken a dislike to him. It is because his skills as a fighter and executioner combined give him an edge over the competition that he is the right hand man of one of the crime lords in the city he lives in, but this is also the reason he has to keep in the shadows. In the country of Tominay, it is forbidden to have blood eyes and if you are caught, you face certain death, but this has been a way of life for Leo for so long, it has now become his normality and Lady Death is never far away.
As a youth, he participated in underground fights in illegal arenas so that he could put food on the table for his siblings, now he continues this while protecting them from external forces who would do them harm and he would protect them with his life if he had to and this becomes even more important when his younger brother shows signs of following in his paranormal path. Leo is heading out for his next job when his boss approaches him and informs him that he knows what powers his brother has shown and that he wants him to join his mercenaries, this is something which Leo has always been scared of, so albeit he agrees to the deal, he has no intention of following through and as soon as he gets home he instructs his siblings to pack a bag each and ready to leave as soon as they can so that they can escape into the night.
As the siblings flee their home, they try and journey to the land of their ancestors, but it is a long and dangerous road for them, especially when past and present collide to bring more trials and tribulations to the family as they risk discovery and slaughter, but will they find the happy ending they are looking for, or will they only find more pain and hardship? This is a tale full of fantasy, danger, secrets, lies, truths and family where nothing is as it seems and there are twists and turns throughout, in this race for survival in a land fraught with obstacles, which will leave you breathless as if you are racing with them.
This is one author to keep your eye on. She is now on my watch list.
The Blood Prince is an intriguing YA fantasy and I love the cover. It is written by Ayla Marie a young writer still in high school. It is also her debut novel. This is a great start and show cases her love for storytelling. She is a naturally talent writer. I found this story interesting and engrossing and couldn’t wait to turn the pages. Ayla is just as good if not better than some of the seasoned authors I have read.
Ayla has given us readers all the ingredients that make it a great read that not only has you glued to the pages but also your heart pumping. It is action packed with lots of danger and hidden agendas, drama with lots of twists and turns.
No spoilers here you just have to grab a copy and dig in. You will not be disappointed.
Even though it is a YA fantasy tale it should be read by anyone. I am nearly 60 and I really enjoyed it.
You go Miss Ayla and share more of your treasured stories. You have talent girl!
Suspense, courage, loyalty and an undeniable bond that shows that family is not necessarily all about the blood that you share. A book that grabs you from the beginning and leaves you wanting the story to continue. I cannot wait!
I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I first came across The Blood Prince by Ayla Marie. The synopsis was interesting and unique, and I just knew I had to read it and see what it was about. There are two parts, part one is from the perspective of Leo, part two is from his adoptive brother Cael’s perspective.
In the beginning the book is from Leo’s point of view, he is a Blood Prince, the most wanted mercenary in the Kingdom of Tominay. He is on a job, the target requests a death wish in her final moments, “Kill my kids for me after I’m gone.” This single moment breaks Leo’s concentration as he sees the faces of his five siblings pass through his mind. He has granted death wishes before, they were simple request to fulfill such as, burn my body after I am gone, but this wish weighed heavily on his mind as he questioned such a request. Since the death of his parents Leo has done everything, to provide for his siblings, until his nightmare comes true, one of his little brothers has the same powers as him. A bang on the door after an innocent night of siblings’ playing together turned dark when a stranger came knocking on their door, “All I do is put them in harm’s way. Every day we stay here I endanger them.”, Leo’s thoughts are pained as he handles the fourth stranger within the year to come looking for the mercenary with red eyes. An innocent family day into town to get pastry, his brother sees some boys playing kickball and joins in, they invite him to join in a game an hour later around the block and his older brother Cael gives him the okay feeling he’s old enough to give him a chance. One rule, be home by dark. Three hours have passed by Leo sits waiting for his brother to return, impatient and worried he begins to run with all he has. Heart pounding, he runs pass the old oak tree before stopping when he notices a figure sitting near it, his boss Mr. Vela. Heartless and cruel his boss has always dangled his siblings’ safety in front of his face. Leo’s little brother was arrested for trying to kill someone his eyes glowing gold. Willing to do anything to save his brother Leo agrees to Mr. Vela’s terms, in exchange for the location of his brother he will bring him into the “business” to work with him. Saying anything to get the location Leo runs with everything he can to save his brother. Willing to give anything he will save his siblings.
I found myself transported into the world the author created, as the oldest sibling I found my heart racing with Leo’s. His determination pure, he does what he must to provide for them and to protect them, not only from those who would hurt them but from seeing the darker sides of himself. The Blood Prince had me begging from the beginning for everything to work out for Leo and his siblings to be safe. For them to have a home free of fear.
“Yeah, I’m so grateful for my fantastical heritage,” I say, sarcasm thick in my tone. His words send my thoughts back to the story of my ancestry I used to beg my parents to tell me. I am a descendent of a people who should not exist, a race of weaponized soldiers created to kill. During the Great War nearly a century ago, there were two fighting sides: the Allied Kingdoms and the Death Dancers. As the least gruesome tales go, the Death Dancers used to drink the blood of their enemies and walked into battle with red-stained mouths, growling like animals. They were ruthless, devious soldiers whose weapons were so advanced that one Death Dancer could take down ten of the Allied soldiers. Even with their supreme strength and wealth, they still wanted more land, resources, and power. They wanted to rule the continent. So, the Death Dancers created my people, an army of prisoners of all the kingdoms genetically modified to fight. We were made to be faster, stronger, able to resist pain. But with these strengths, we were cursed with endless sleepless nights and the ability to suffer and survive the most horrible injuries. The stories don’t tell much more than that, and my parents never offered any more real insight either. Their only words were a warning to me that my people are viewed as unnatural, so the kingdoms hunt us, no matter where we try to hide.
The Blood Prince is the first book in a new trilogy, and debut novel, by Ayla Marie. This is an engrossing story, which had me hooked right from the beginning. It is a fantastic start to the trilogy- which I can’t wait to continue. As a debut novel, this surprised me as it is really well written and quite polished. And if this is what we get from a debut author, I can’t wait to follow to see what the future holds for her, and her stories. This is an action-packed YA fantasy with danger, drama, twists, powers, agendas, and much more. This is a flight from the demons of the past. Of being hunted. A fight for survival. A fight for freedom. A mercenary who is more than he seems. And that ending…. OMG!!! Bring on Book #2!!!! I need to know what happens now!!! Happy Reading!
In this book, we are introduced to Leo, a character who has spent his entire life evading the clutches of Lady Death. From his brutal beginnings in the Tominese arenas to becoming the most feared mercenary in the country, Leo's journey is one of relentless survival and fierce loyalty to his family.
What truly captivated me about this story was the depth of Leo's character. His unnatural powers, which make him a formidable killer, are paradoxically the very reason for his constant peril. Leo's existence is outlawed under the royal laws of Tominay, adding an intense layer of urgency and danger to his every move. The way the author delves into the internal and external conflicts Leo faces is masterful, making him a character you can't help but root for.
I loved the bond between Leo and his siblings which is the heart of this narrative. Despite the dangers they face, Leo's unwavering commitment to protect his siblings is profoundly moving. The siblings' relationship is beautifully portrayed, highlighting the sacrifices they are willing to make for each other. This familial love adds a poignant emotional layer to the story, contrasting sharply with the relentless violence of their world.
The narrative's pacing is relentless, mirroring the urgency and danger that shadow Leo and his family. Yet, amid the chaos, there are moments of introspection and vulnerability that provide a deeper understanding of the characters' motivations and fears. These quieter moments are beautifully written, offering a respite from the intense action and allowing for a more profound connection with the characters.
Overall, I found this a fast-paced, riveting tale of survival, loyalty, and the unbreakable bonds of family. The author has crafted a story that is both heart-pounding and heart-wrenching, with characters that linger in your mind. If you're looking for a book that combines intense action with deep emotional resonance, this is a must-read.
It’s okay really 3.5 stars for me. Well The Blood Prince is interesting. I’m not the biggest fan of the story concept, however that doesn’t take away from what the author has written. The author created an interesting world with enough detail that you can imagine yourself there in the story. At the beginning it was all over the place and I was slightly confused. As you get further into it the author cleans up a lot and the story itself gets more interesting and understandable. Living in this different world’s poverty Leo is trying to take care of his siblings. He’s different and he knows it, he can call an essence that takes over his body. It turns his eyes red, numbs the pain, and makes him invincible in battle. It garnered rumors about him, gaining him the nickname of “The Blood Prince.” Everyone knows of him but don’t necessarily know who he is. When the bounty for his head has been doubled he realizes his family needs to leave Tominay. After finding a letter from his mother, they set off for Illena. Coming across many obstacles along the way, they persevered. Just one problem, it’s what they find once they get to Illena. Leo & Cael find themselves fighting for freedoms they are viewed as trash, even go as far as criminals based on author descriptions. But there are golden-eyed people who are interested in them. What could they learn from the outcasts? Will these two brothers find a way to prove they aren’t who they are assumed to be? Two of the many questions that come to mind once I got the Illena portion of the story. Which is also written better than the Tominay part of the story. Once the story moved to Illena, the book really started to peak my interest. Made me glad I tried something new, knowing how I felt at the beginning. A promising author that I look forward to reading other works in the future.
This is the first book that I have read from this author and let me tell you something I was not disappointed. I fell is love with this book, I had to finish the entire book in my sitting. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone , you will not be disappointed. I hope and pray y’all fall in love with this book just as I had. Both the plot and characters were wonderfully written: it was like I was standing next to them experiencing everything they were in the moments. Now here’s a little bit about the book: A mercenary with death following his every step… Leo has been evading Lady Death’s grip his entire life. First, fighting in the merciless Tominese arenas, and then becoming the most feared mercenary in the country. The unnatural powers that have made him into a ruthless killer are the same that prohibit his very existence under the royal laws of Tominay. Though they will always be hunted, he protects his brothers and sister with his every breath because allowing death to take them away has never been an option. Now they must run, or face their worst nightmares… When Leo’s employer finds out his younger brother holds the same power that made him into an invaluable weapon, they must make a long-awaited decision: to stay and risk slaughter, or to flee their home in search of a new life. I’m excited to see and read more of this authors books in the future.
Ayla Marie's book The Blood Prince is an awesome YA fantasy that follows Leo, a mercenary with superpowers, and his siblings as they run away from tons of danger. The story takes place in the kingdom of Tominay, where Leo's powers make him super important but also put a big target on his back. It's all about survival, sticking together, and trying to find freedom in a world full of danger and surprises.
Marie is really good at making characters that feel real. Leo, the main guy, is shown as a complex guy with lots of inner battles but a strong desire to keep his family safe. His brothers and sisters are also fleshed out with their own unique traits and reasons for doing things. The connections between everyone in the story feel genuine and hit you right in the feels, making the whole story more interesting.
Ayla Marie's writing is super engaging and really makes the world of Tominay come alive. Her descriptions are so vivid that you feel like you're right there in the thick of it all, exploring the landscapes and society. The dialogue feels totally natural and helps you get to know the characters better, and the action scenes are so exciting and keep you on the edge of your seat. I love how Marie manages to create such a detailed world while also focusing on the characters - she's seriously talented.
If you're into YA fantasy and love stories with strong characters and cool worlds, you should totally check out The Blood Prince. It's got a bit of everything - action, feels, and deep ideas that'll get you thinking. Whether you've been reading fantasy forever or are just getting into it, this book is bound to grab you and get those creative juices flowing.
THE BLOOD PRINCE is a compelling YA fantasy that centers around a young man named Leo who will do whatever it takes to take care of his siblings. After his parents’ death, it became Leo’s responsibility to care for them, and he finds himself working as a mercenary after his family’s safety is used as blackmail. The lacing of this book is initially a bit slower, but with Leo’s job as a mercenary, things don’t stay slow for long. Eventually Leo runs in to some serious danger and the story takes off from there. I really liked this one! I loved Leo’s loyalty to those he loves and I loved the sibling bond he shares with them. Also, he has some unique supernatural abilities that help him both in his mercenary job and now on the run. This book has a bit of something for everyone — there’s mystery, intrigue, family dynamics, and some supernatural elements, along with many more interesting tidbits. There are also quite a few heavy topics involved, which made this one a bit of a darker YA read. I enjoyed THE BLOOD PRINCE and I’ll definitely be grabbing the sequel. Pick this one up if you enjoy: ♠️Found Family ♠️Fated Hero ♠️Antihero ♠️Hidden Kingdom ♠️Slow Burn ♠️Morally Grey MC’s ♠️3 POV’s
I really enjoyed this fantasy adventure. The author does an amazing job creating the world and the characters. It is a story that will grip you and doesn't let go. I love the relationship between the family and the loyalty that they have for each other no matter what situation they find themselves in. Leo is the main character well follow and this is his story. After losing their parents Leo has vowed to protect his brothers and sister no matter the cost. He works as a mercenary to earn money to keep his family fed. He had a rare gift which his boss exploits to the max. When Leo's boss realises he isnt the only one in his family with this gift, Leo and his family need to make a decision. Stay and risk certain death or leave and have a chance of a better life. What follows is a journey as they travel away from everything they know to hopefully be free. But this journey isn't easy and when they are still hunted down by the people they left behind it leaves you wondering whether they will ever find peace at all or is the whole family destined to be hunted and targeted until one or all of them is dead.
The Blood Prince is an engaging YA fantasy novel that will pull you in from the beginning and keep you glued to the pages to the very end. This book is just the beginning of this dynamic series, so prepare for a cliffhanger at the end. Leo is a young mercenary hooked into what he does in an effort to protect his family from being exposed to the crown. Why? Well, they are outlawed from simply existing because of what they are. Leo has earned the title of the Blood Prince thanks to his eyes. His siblings? Hold their own secret by having unique eyes themselves. History does not smile on them for this and the king and his kingdom hate and fear them. What do you do though when your secret is exposed in a case of mistaken identity? You run. But along the way Leo and his family will have more secrets exposed. Just when they think that maybe they have found a safe haven what they find instead is prejudice and hardship. This book is engaging, a whirlwind of drama, tension and so much more. You’re not going to want to put this book down. This book is a must read and we can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I read THE BLOOD PRINCE by Ayla Marie for a review tour hosted by the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours. Thank you to both for inviting me along and for the gifted book.
I have to say right away that I am surprised that this is first, written by a high school student and second, this is a debut. This is a well-written, intense, and fast-paced story with great characters, worldbuilding, and an amazing journey.
This cast of characters have been through hell. They've seen and experienced everything from death of loved ones, to abuse, and torture. And, most of them are just children. Their backstories are heartbreaking.
When they finally reach a point where it seems everything is going to turn out, the rug is pulled out again. The journey they all take is long, dangerous, and emotional. You just want them to get their happy ending.
The fighting scenes are intense. There is on-page physical abuse between parent and child, and it is brutal. There are some light-hearted moments and moments of hope. I didn't anticipate the twists and surprises. And, I did shed some tears. That cliffhanger, though! I need Book 2 asap!
I recommend THE BLOOD PRINCE to fans of epic ya fantasy, found family, fated heroes, hidden kingdoms, morally gray characters, and stories of people doing what they must in order to protect the ones they love.
Blood Prince by Ayla Marie is a fantastic dark YA fantasy read.
Leo has been on the run all his life because of powers that render him the best mercenary in the land. When one of his younger siblings experience similar symptoms of power, he knows his family's stay in Tominay has been cut short.
He comes across a secret message from his parents long passed away that speak of their place in a mythical land where no culture seems to thrive.
Will they reach the promised land? Or will the enemy mercenaries, the King's Guard, and, even supposed saviours keep them from their true home?
Although the pacing at the beginning was slow, Leo, Cael, the siblings, and their love for each other was the strongest thread that pulled me through the story. When the pacing picked up and then evened out well, the story came alive.
The world building and its history were a constant source of curiosity and were fleshed out just as well as the characters. Ayla Marie has a keen sense of how to interweave the macro and micro within her world.
If you enjoy family centric plots in fantasy, this book is for you!
I thought it was a good read. There is two parts to the book, part one is about Leo and part two is about his adopted brother Cael. Leo is the Bloof Prince, he is the most wanted. He had a job, he didn't want to do it, it broke his concentration on what he really needed to do. He has granted many upon many of death grants but this one was the kicker for him. He was pretty much like a parent to his siblings after what happened to his parents. His brother he was worried about he may have similar powers as he does. He keeps thinking to himself that he's putting everyone in danger by staying. Kids want to be kids and play with other kids, but they need to follow the rule and be home by dark. Yo dave his brother he had to agree to things Mr. Vela is his, Leo's boss, and to grany what he says, but his boss loves to dangle his siblings life's in his face. I was into the book I didn't want to put it down. Leo has determination, he does anything for his siblings, anything. They needed to be free and have a home. They needed to be safe.
I loved the fighting in this book and I really need to dive into the next one because I need some questions answered asap!!
Leo is such a bloody fighter and I love it 😈. The fight scenes are so good and I can't wait for the Blood Prince to be let out more. Overall he is a really guy that basically just got dealt the worst hand in life and still manages to stay good for his siblings. My only small issue was he is blinded by family, but that makes sense because they are his whole life.
Cael was my favorite though because he knew stuff was going wrong from the start and was the one to find out what really was the point of keeping Leo alive in a place that despises him. If something happens to Cael later I will riot because they are already a smaller family than they need to be.
Overall I really enjoyed this and want to know if the one romance will continue or if it's just a lost cause based on how the book ended. And if Altair WILL SNAP OUT OF IT!! That boy was making me mad and I really need to know what they do to him.
From reading the synopsis of this story I honestly thought I may be reading about a vampire, haha. The Blood Prince is written from Leo's point of view. You get action within the first few pages of the story and the autor did a great job with the description of where everything was taking place. It made me feel like I was right there witnessing it all go down. Leo is a very sought after mercenary, but he also has a family to protect. On one of his missions he his target asks him to grant her a death wish which is to kill her children. Although he did grant death wishes from time to time this one made him stop to think whether or not he would grant it. His hesitancy is due to having younger siblings of his own. One of Leo's younger brothers has the same ability as he does which isn't a good thing. The man he works for has discovered this secret and now they must run for their lives. Will they find a safe place?
Ayla Marie is a new author for me, and definitely one I will read again! The Blood Prince is the first of two books focused on Leo and his family. There is so much more emotion in this book than I was suspecting. Leo's bond with his siblings is so pure and they are all so protective of one another; it’s amazing to feel through the pages of a book. The characters are so realistically flawed and believable that I couldn't help but feel connected to them somehow. This young adult fantasy was not a quick read, but rather, one to curl up with and immerse yourself in. The world building of Ayla Marie is as fantastical as the content of the story! I found myself walking through the woods with the Hael family, wandering the filthy streets of Somereil, and exploring the wonder of the city of Wate. There were so many twists to this adventure that I was kept on my toes throughout the entirety of the book. I cannot wait to read the next book!
What an incredible book! I was hooked right from the start and it never let me go! This was a welcome change from what I’ve been reading recently. I loved getting to see siblings represented, especially since there were so many of them, and they all got their own distinct personalities. The bond they share is so strong and I loved getting to see them all take care of each other, and joke, and bicker. Seeing Leo and Cael as the big brothers/ parents was so bittersweet. They shouldn’t have had to take on the responsibility but the way they care for the younger kids and for each other is so touching. The world these kids live in a dark and cruel but despite it all they push forward and hold each other up and continue to laugh through the pain (which they have a lot of). If you’re a fan of Six of Crows because you love Ketterdam then there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this book! I truly loved it so much and hope you will too, and I can’t wait to start the next book.
This book was my first read by this author. I was intrigued by the fact that we share a name and had to pick up this book to see the world within the pages. It is very rare I encounter someone that I share a name with. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will pick up future books by Ayla Marie.
The storyline of The Blood Prince was interesting to read. The characters were well developed. Leo, one of the main characters we meet in the beginning, appears to be more of the villain of the story, but by the end his portrayal changes. On the run from both the past and the future Leo and his siblings try to find a better future. Will the past sink its hooks into them and keep them burdened by it? Will the future they run from win or will they be able to create the better future they seek? Pick up the book to find out for yourself. You won't regret it.
The Blood Prince by Ayla Marie. I loved this book. This is the story of Leo who is a Blood Prince because of blood that flows thru his eyes when he has a mission to complete. He is the right hand man of one of the cold blooded crime lords. Problem being its illegal to have blood eyes in Tominay where he lives. If he is caught with blood eyes it is immediate execution! Leo has had to provide for his sibling for most of his life so he did whatever it took to feed them and take care of them. When Leo's boss approaches him about his knowledge of Leo's brothers super powers and he wants his brother to join them. Leo has always been fearful of this. The brothers soon embark on a crazy dangerous adventure full of danger, demons, power and fights. Will they survive the whole ordeal? This book will keep you flipping pages til late in the night.
This is the first book of a two book series which was entertaining to read. What a great start to a new series and I look forward to picking up book two. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. I enjoyed the author’s writing skills that brought the story to life. Her attention to details brought reality to the story. This is a story about two brothers who have a magical power. They find themselves in a situation where they are forced to leave a life they have always known to find another. It becomes a game of survival, one of which you do not want to miss. I enjoyed these characters and how relatable they are. They are strong characters that add so much to the story. This is a fast paced, engaging story that had me turning pages fast just to find out what happened next. I really enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend this book.
