Winslow Pike is a rare a retired gunfighter.
Most of ’em don’t survive that long.

But the bank robbery forces Pike to step out of retirement, both to help an old friend and to find the man he’s looking for.

If you love classic Westerns where the gunsmoke is so thick it’ll choke you, then grab your saddle and your six-shooter and ride along with Slow Pike as he fights to keep the bank woman alive and settle old debts.
A wonderful Western. Well crafted and authentic. I loved the characters both good and evil. I felt like I was in the story the whole way. One of the best westerns. Don't miss it.
This was a very fine and excellent read. The author did something I don't recall seeing very often. Most authors develop the plot and bring it to an ending, tied up nicely. This author did an excellent job of exposing an important part of the plot halfway through, and allowing the characters to grow into the people you wanted to see towards the end. You for the most part knew how it was going to end but we're left rooting for the "team" as the rest of the plot unfolded. This is one of the best westerns I've read in years, highly recommended.
This story resonates with old west action, charm and nostalgia! The characters are so well drawn that you feel as though you know them. Excellent story by Robert Peecher!
I enjoyed and recommend this book and this author. The characters were both believable and likable (or very unlikable for the bad guys). I felt the pace of the story was good. I have read several of the books by this author, and have enjoyed them all.
When Slow Pike rides into town, he is looking for GW Helms. Nobody seems to have heard of him, but they know of Pike's reputation as a gunfighter. His first experience with Miss Connie Martin is quite the opposite of favorable. She thinks he is a brute for discipling a kid that sorely needed it. Things are about to change. Miss Connie witnesses a bank robbery and murder and she can point the finger at gang leader Wade Murder. Fortunately, he was injured in the robbery and sits in jail. Here is where oil meets water. The sheriff knows where GW Helms is and will tell Pike if Pike will take Miss Connie out to the Stage station and protector her until the trial. Murdock is in jail, but his gang is still out there. This is an excellent story.
Westerns often aren't viewed as literary gems. Many aren't but like any genre there ho hum and then a book comes along that touches some of us to the core. Possibly because a parallel breaches your life. Pike lived a very violent life but he dreamed of a chance of love and acceptance. A gang stands in his way. A lady sacrifices love for a career. Does she have one last chance to be loved. A young man is compelled to deny all that he believes in for one last chance at having a father. These are the people who make a damn good story.
My usual reaction when I start reading a new western yarn and the hero is using a stupid gun, like a Walker Colt or Dragoon or some other obsolete and less modern firearm is to stop reading and find a more realistic author. But for some reason I kept reading this one. Glad I did. Except for the author's choice of a heavy and unwieldy firearm when other more modern guns were available, such as the Colt SAA or the Remington No. 3, the story was very believable and more importantly, entertaining. What a story should be. Thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of an aging gunfighter as he overcomes his past and is able to make a new life with his estranged son and family. This story is very well written and the characters are come to life as they are developed. The book held my attention from beginning to the wonderful finale. Thank you sir for providing the incredible entertainment.
Slow Pike: A Western Frontier Adventure by Robert Peecher is a gripping tale of redemption and justice set in the rugged American West. Retired gunfighter Winslow "Slow" Pike becomes the unlikely protector of a witness targeted by outlaws. With authentic characters and a vivid portrayal of frontier life, this story captures the essence of classic Westerns. A must-read for fans of the genre!
A hired gun, getting on in years, comes to the town to find his son. The sheriff ropes Pike into guarding a wo.an who witnessed a bank robbery. The outlaws are determined to kill her. Suspense, action, doing the right thing, and forgiveness are themes in this book. Good read.
Follow a older gun fighter as he tries to retire, there is one more job that requires his special talent. Watch as he unfolds his reasoning and finds more than he barged for. A great read, highly recommended.
Yes as expected Robert Peecher has written another page turning novel. A story that just takes me along for the ride. I anxiously awaite his next book.
I truly enjoyed this Western. It had a great story line. Lots of action and good character development. A real page turner. Some romance and family dynamics. I highly recommend this novel.
I enjoyed this story about an old gun fighter who is trying to retire. About his troubles while linking with his estranged family. The breathtaking ending will have you on the edge of your seat!
I liked that Pike was so focused and determined to do what he promised. Integrity is always a sign of a good man. It was a clean and heartwarming book. Thank you.
I really enjoyed this story, and was excited to see that the author had used a place I was able to have riden over 45 years ago! What a beautiful ending!
Wow! I’ve seen plenty of Western movies. This is the first Western novel I’ve read though. I’m a little surprised at how much I enjoyed it! The no nonsense protagonist was very likable. The story was exciting! A little splash of romance made it all the more interesting, too. Definitely worth a read!
