Cannon Ripley hates his first name, his friends' nickname for him, and the fact that his career as an undercover operative with any number of "alphabet soup" agencies takes him away from his lover, Olivia. He's been driven out, so he's come back ... with one person on his mind, and a plan to win her over.
Olivia is done being left behind, and she told Rip so about 3 years before the story begins (for a scene from the night she told him, you should read Protected) ... in the meantime, she's buried herself in running two bars, elaborate cosplays, and fan conventions within driving distance of the DC metropolitan area.
When Rip shows up at her 2nd bar after it's been set on fire, she's understandably peeved ... but he's furious and terrified for her. Who could she possibly have been involved with that would want to hurt her? He's determined to find out, but not before he insists on shadowing Liv's every move.
Typically a romance novel with a character with a Daddy kink is a bit much for me (I found it slightly icky the first time I encountered one) but the fact that this one takes the time to explain that it's not actually age-play (which is a hard no for me) for this character, and what it means to him to use the dynamic, made it clearer and, yes, hotter.
