I set off to cross the mountains into the Old Realm so that I could have the adventure of a lifetime…but I didn’t realize I might never return to the man I love.
When Dushka let me go off to the Old Realm to pursue my passion for healing, he bid me have as much fun as I could while away. I took him at his word, and my fun started almost as soon as I set off!
But having fun with new friends along the journey, and with my housemates once I arrived at Royersford Healers’ College, was only the beginning of an adventure I never could have planned for. Messing around is one way to become like brothers with my housemates, but living through the rise of a tyrant whose paranoia causes him to capture the entire Old Realm in his iron grip is another entirely.
I never intended to end up trapped in the Old Realm. I never intended to fall in love with one of my classmates either. But if it’s the last thing I ever do, I will climb the mountains to make it home to Dushka…and I’ll take Appius and the rest of my friends with me, even if we die in the process.
The Sons of the Cities is a spinoff series to Peter and the Wolves. It is highly recommended that you read all of the Peter and the Wolves books first.

USA Today Bestselling author Merry Farmer lives in suburban Philadelphia with her two cats, Justine and Peter. She has been writing since she was ten years old and realized she didn't have to wait for the teacher to assign a creative writing project to write something. It was the best day of her life. Her books have reached the top of Amazon's charts, and have been named finalists for several prestigious awards, including the RONE Award for indie romance.
It holds true that each book in this series is better than the last, aside from Anton. This book was so intense. Things are crazy in the old realm! And then the escape through the mountains! So much happened!
Some things were upsetting though. Conrad discovers in this book that he is in fact bisexual. There is a graphic scene between Conrad and a woman. But there is a reason I read MM romance, and I really didn’t enjoy seeing that. We also see some of the parties that Magnus was a victim of when he was younger. And there is a twincest situation going on with some of Conrad’s friends, who we see regular.
I am so glad that Dushka, Conrad, and Appius are going to try to make it work. I wish we could have seen more of them together. I am excited to read the short story with Conrad in the next book.
Reading these books has been such a joy. The depths and twists and turns, the sorrow, anxiety and joy in the stories is so captivating. Conrad was an unexpected pleasure. Having his own book really showed her was much more than a side character. And now we have Appius and Aurora. Can't wait to read more.
I loved this brief glimpse into the Old Realm, and even though I never really got into any of the characters, I was completely invested in their overall adventure.
