Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Endorsement: If you're looking for a book filled with adventure, action, faith, fantasy, and friendships, look no further than Prince of Vengeance!

Review: Kahtan is a sympathetic character who had a lot of struggles in this book. He's such a loyal guy, and I feel like his friends sometimes took advantage of that. Speaking of his friends, I didn't agree with a lot of the decisions the prince made, but it sure put all the guys in some interesting situations.

The plot contained plenty of action scenes and moments of character growth and continued the story started in Unfortunate Events.

Overall, Prince of Vengeance was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, fantasy, and action/adventure stories.

An exciting addition to the Dragon Prince Chronicles!

Characters: As this is the second book in this series, we come back to a lot of familiar characters, so there's not too many new characters. But even though there aren't as many new characters, there is plenty of character development. Poor Kahtan ... the poor boy needs some kindness. He is still struggling to be a good soldier, and he ends up getting into more scrapes and trials along the way. Gaven had an interesting character arc - going from very reluctant prince to something else by the end! And then there were the other guys ... poor Sage, who was suffering so much in this one. Wixley, who had some good development and changes. And then there was Finnick, who was still wise as ever. The rest of the side characters also added their own important bits to the plot - I was intrigued by the pretty girl Kahtan had his eyes on at the end. :)

Writing Style/Setting/Plot: While not overly flowery or poetic, the writing style of this novel was very well done. The construction of sentences were clean and functional and overall simple to read. The setting, while a fantasy world, was also not overdone but clearly not the real world. And the plot ... wow, the action and intrigue just keeps increasing! Something was also about to happen or happening, and this is definitely not a book that you'll get bogged down. You're always on the move!

Theme: Overall, the importance of teamwork and friendship came through this novel. Kahtan really struggled with belonging and jealousy near the end of the read, and what a good reminder to both make others feel welcome and not to become jealous at others at what they have.
Also, Kahtan seems to be turning the corner spiritually ... I need to see what happens next!

Overall, a clean, fast, and exciting read that included no inappropriate content. And that includes no magic, either. I need to see what happens in the next book in the series!

“They say the barrel that holds it all is bound to burst.”

4.5 stars

What I liked: This is beautifully written. These girls know how to twist your emotions and play with your heart. The authors definitely advanced their writing talent since the first book! The characters were amazing, as always. Lady Silena and Abbiana were wonderful additions *wiggles eyebrows*
There were some really good names—even the side characters! And all the relationship and friendship struggles they go through is realistic and really grows your connection to the characters. The struggle with faith was also very good. I also appreciate that Kahtan is the main character and POV of the book, even though it might seem like Sage or Gaven are “more important” characters.
AGHHHHH THAT ENDING! I need the next book……nowwwww, pleaseeeeee!

What I didn’t like: Gaven seemed very stuck up in this book—more than in the last one (which might very well be part of his character development, but I didn’t enjoy it). Kahtan seems to always get hurt or be in some fight with someone, which gets repetitive. Some of the dialogue was awkward. And ellipses seem to be an overused punctuation mark.

MORE QUOTES!!!

“Kahtan forced a smile to his lips, even though his mind refused to focus on anything but the past.”

“Kahtan hung his head. Nark was right. He wasn’t a warrior. He was just a boy…”

Overall, a great read and addition to the series!! Recommended to fantasy lovers ages 10+.

At the end of this book, I was left screaming(internally. Who needs to worry the neighbors?) It was mostly because I was falling off a cliffhanger, again. I fell off the edge without knowing I had gotten there.

I was still struggling to see the overarching theme, however, that could be because the girls are skillfully working up to it, and are slipping it in without my noticing.

They made up for that, however, with a crazy fast-paced, action-packed, and thought-provoking plot and characters. Each character has a depth and emotion that makes them feel real. And I'm left hoping against hope that a certain so and so can be forgiven.

Wow! This book was amazing! I read it straight through in one afternoon. Some of my favorite things about it were:

1. The uplifting themes about friendship, purpose, and trust.
2. The fun characters! Especially the comic relief, Sage and Nark.
3. The girls! I was glad they had more "screen time" and I especially loved the addition of Abbiana! (I've already shipped her and Kahtan).
4. The ratio of action vs. down time. Actually there was no down time, because when the boys are all chilling in their tent their comic banter is a lot of fun!

Three cheers to the Sisters Three for the wonderful book!

Oh my goodness, that was amazing. I cannot wait for book three. One thing I loved about the ending was that it was a cliffhanger, but it wasn't. XD. Loved it.

The storyline was awesome. We're thrown into the action right away, and these poor boys can't seem to go a day without almost dying.

The characters were where this book really shined! I feel so bad for Kahtan, there's so much more for him to learn and he's so stubborn, and, if I'm being honest, he's probably my favorite. I loved watching as Gaven overcame all his different struggles and made what I think were the right choices. Sage was hilarious, we gained some new insights into Wixley's character, and I love Nark. Both girls were also awesome.

The allegory element was amazing, too! I loved getting glimpses into the faith of different characters, and Kahtan's reservations and questions were so realistic.

Overall, this was an amazing book! It's so fun and overall awesome, and I cannot wait for the next book! I'd highly recommend this to fantasy lovers, especially those who love the Wingfeather Saga and the False Prince, ages 9 and up! It's definitely an older story, but I think younger fantasy lovers would enjoy and be okay reading it.

If you love intense action with deep undertones of loyalty and unwavering faith, you'll love this book from the Phillips sisters. The Dragon Prince is a relentless foe, determined to destroy a kingdom and all those that are under its protection. But . . . well, you'll just have to read it to find out!

Wow, lots of intrigue and fighting! I have plenty of worries about the group's survival and am anxious for everyone's safety.
There is such an assortment of new faces and old faces turning up in this one-I was glad to learn more about Wexley's story. And Maisley has somehow changed from a blood-thirsty bounty hunter, to a quieter girl which was strange but, as Sage would say, "noo a bad thing." ;) Like her better this way.
I think though, Gaven is getting to be my top favorite character-sorry, Sage!!

An epic, stirring installment to the Dragon Prince Chronicles! All that I loved in Unfortunate Events was only doubled and enhanced in this book. The brother-like bantering, the life-or-death battles and narrow escapes, the nuanced character dynamics, that fresh, captivating fantasy world...it's all here!

CHARACTERS

My boy Kahtan has been through SO MUCH. He struggled with even more doubts and fears in this book. He feels like he's useless, like he doesn't provide anything to the group. Though he didn't experience much of a character arc (in fact, conflict and tension only heightened), you can feel it building up to his moment of breaking and healing. Can feel the forward momentum. The slow character growth may come across as stagnant to some readers, and sometimes Kahtan's melancholy and continued belief in those lies gets tiring, but for me, it also increases my impatience for Book 3!

Sage is as darlingly mischievous and just Sage-y as ever. I love him so much. Wixley went through huge changes in this book - an old subplot was brought back up with him. Gaven became a huge favorite of mine in this installment, personality-wise. His regal, authoritative air combined with his dry wit and endearing sense of humor...it just won me over. I'm a big fan. XD

And Nark. Despite what Tahn may think of the fellow, I like him. Quite a lot. He's just a bundle of optimism and good spirits! I canna wait to see more of him! ;)

Maisley added so much fire and spark to the story. She's so spunky and tease-able. Lady Silena's a sweet, graceful yet capable girl with a sense of humor. Bless her heart. And Abbiana. *secret grin* She's beautiful, empathetic, and most intriguing. I need to know more about her! (But for what it's worth, I'm shipping her with you know who.)

Master Finnick is a dear old fellow, for sure and certain. The story really needs his leadership and wisdom! He's the one who brings up the Great Creator and gets those kind of thoughts stirred about in Kahtan's head.

The villain was appropriately dreadful and he gave us all the more reason to hate him. That's all I'll say about that.

PLOT

There was a lot of danger. And heartbreak. And even more edge-of-your-seat tension. Much of the story was driven by the conflict between characters in the 'gang,' as I'll call them, which made for plenty of arguments and bickering that I honestly loved. (As a writer, anyway. XD) It was just written so well! And when...certain old... shall we say, acquaintances, came onto the scene, that only added to the plot twists.

There was some violence, as it's a YA medieval fantasy with sword fights, evil villains, and fire. I definitely winced several times, but nothing's graphic.

WRITING

The writing fit the story well, clear and consistent with some moments of beautiful description. I find it so cool that it was co-authored by three sisters!

The accents were beautifully written - enough to flavor the words, but not so much that it overpowered the dialogue and became incoherent.

I loved the world-building! It didn't steal the show, yet I couldn't help but appreciate the unique twist the authors put on their world - from the red lightning to the street boys' names of the city layers of Jujious. All the little details create a solid-feeling atmosphere that just feels believable, in its own fantasy way. So good.

THEMES

Though, like I mentioned early, Kahtan still is deep in his conflict and his arc isn't complete, there were still overarching themes in Prince of Vengeance, most notably that of loyalty and the bond of friends. How you can't go through life alone.

The spiritual threads of this story are still subtle but are growing. The Great Creator hears our cries for help. He is real. Kahtan still struggles to believe this, but it's there. I actually appreciate how Kahtan struggles so much with believing that the Creator is real and hears him. In most Christian stories, the characters are converted over the course of one book. But since it's a series and the authors have the freedom to take their time with Kahtan's arc, it works. It feels incredibly realistic.

OVERALL

This series is just getting better and better! I had an amazing time reading Prince of Vengeance and recommend it to anyone who loves clean YA fantasy with a deep spiritual thread, brother-like friendships and all the teasing and bickering that comes with that, and suspense-filled adventure. ⚔️

A FAVORITE QUOTE

“The Great Creator hears yer calls for help. He hears the pleas of ya heart, lads. There ain’t nothin’ He don’t hear.”

4 stars. I’ve been waiting for this sequel for a LONG time… well, a whole year, anyways… and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. Even if somehow I thought this was a duology and fondly assumed this book would wrap everything up. Spoiler alert… it doesn’t. It only makes things worse the stakes more intense.

First off, the characters. This story began right where the first book left off, so I was plunged right back into the Squad. They were just as awesome as they were before. My heart hurt for Kahtan, who felt so unneeded and unimportant (💔); Sage was so himself BUT ALSO SO HURT; Wixley… well, at first I was suspicious and so betrayed (I’M SORRY, WIXLEYYY) but then he turned out to be the Wixley I know & love; and then Gaven… well done, I’m so proud of you. <3 All my babies are growing up! :') Also, Silena and Maisley were awesome, and so was Master Fennick, and Hurgen, and sorta Preston?? Yeah, all the characters here are so good—so complex and so colourful! The writing style is still a bit weak at times, but the dialects are as well done as ever, and, guys, I just read some of the best metaphors I’ve ever seen in my life.

The plot here is VERY different from the first book. It’s actually pretty somber. Things are serious for the lands, and nothing’s an easy fix. I have never read a book in a series with such a mood before… it felt like the depression that hits after an adrenaline rush, as you start to wonder if anything ir worthwhile and if there’s any hope at all. Not that the book is depressing, at all—there’s quite a bit of humour—it’s just … somber. Serious and sad and gearing up for a tough time. While there’s a lot that happens, it’s mostly reactionary, and you see how much the enemy is taking over, and how little the good guys have left to fight back. It captures the situation of the characters and the nation very well. Hats off to the authors for this unique and excellent mood.

In short, this is a great addition to a fantastic MG series, with some excellent lessons, and I’m so eager for book 3!!

(Also, the ending is a cliffhanger, and I may or may not have thrown the book across the room and yelled at the author.)

A Favourite Quote: He still wasn’t sure what his purpose was, but at least he knew what he was doing at the moment, and maybe that was enough. Maybe one didn’t need to know who he was, what made him, or even where he fit in the world, but simply what his next task was.
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “Sage will get us through unnoticed, or at least hardly noticed.”
Sage grinned. “Let’s go with hardly noticed. A groupin’ this large cannae exactly be unnoticed, if ye understand me meanin’.”

The plot thickens… I loved this next installment in the series! Kahtan and his crew are growing up fast (though Kahtan still receives more injuries than anyone should be able to survive; bless him). I recommend for ages 10+!

This next installment in the Dragon Prince Chronicles series is a fast-paced, intriguing, and enjoyable adventure!

My favorite group of boys are back! Kahtan, Sage, Wixley, and Gaven are such a great group, with their own unique personalities, and they have such great chemistry together. It's always a joy to read the scenes where they're all together and bantering and having fun.... 🥰 And in this book we have a new character joining the team as well: Nark. While we don't spend a ton of time with him in this book, I can already tell that he's a great character! And I hope things between him and Kahtan get better in the next book (because poor Kahtan - I just want to grab him and give him a huge hug!).

The plot continues to move forward, with the group journeying to the palace, the Dragon Prince growing stronger, and threats and danger closing in. There was never a dull moment in the book!

This was a quick, easy read, with lovable characters and a wonderful world to dive headfirst into. It definitely deserves five stars, and I easily recommend it to anyone with a love of fantasy and camaraderie.

Now, next book please!!!!
