Will Seeking Justice Lead to Her Own Demise?

A Gothic-Style Regency Romance from a Promising Young Author

Second daughter of a baron—and a little on the mischievous side—Ella Pemberton is no governess. But the pretense is a necessity if she ever wishes to get inside of Wyckhorn Manor and attain the truth. Exposing the man who killed her sister is all that matters.

Lord Sedgewick knows there’s blood on his hands. Lies have been conceived, then more lies, but the price of truth would be too great. All he has left now is his son—and his hatred. Yet as the charming governess invades his home, his safe cocoon of bitterness begins to tear away.

Could Ella, despite the lingering questions of his guilt, fall in love with such a man? Or is she falling prey to him—just as her dead sister?

Beneath His Silence is a gothic tale full of haunted estates, misty isolated seasides and unexplained murder shrouded in mystery. I loved how the main character seeks to avenge her sisters death but can't help but feel like something isn't quite right...especially when she starts to fall in love when her sisters alleged murderer. It made for a unique story that hooked me from the start.

I love taking a chance on debut authors and I'm so glad I did. I loved Hannah's voice within her writing. It felt very much steeped in historical undertones and accuracy with good dialogue and imagery as well.

I loved how this dual perspective novel gave me those Jane Eyre vibes I crave in Gothic romance and had you guessing the reveal at each chapter. I thought while it had its Bronte parallels it was fresh and took on a life of its own. It was fun and kept my attention with the added mystery/suspense plot.

This is Christian fiction romance and I believe Hannah did a great job adding God into her plot and creating an organic message of hope when all is lost and finding your faith in God when it seems the heavens have become silent.

I can't wait to see what Hannah does moving forward. I think Beneath His Silence is a great start to a very promising writing career.

Warnings: #1 This is a long review, so pull up a chair and grab a bowl of popcorn. You’ll be here awhile. #2 When I read a review, I want substantial information. So I will not skimp on the details. Which may mean some spoilers, so watch out.

Before we begin, I must preface this review by saying that I knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, before I even thought to begin reading this book, that I was going to love it. I’ve loved everything Hannah has written up to this point (that I’ve read, at least), and I know her writing is positively exquisite. Sure, I’ve never read a full-blown novel by her...or a Regency one, for that matter...or a Gothic romance. BUT I had it already ingrained in my mind and heart that I would simply adore it.

It rarely occurs that I, despite several reasons from trepidation, am entirely and wholly certain I will love a book—even if I had no just cause not to. So this in and of itself in an anomaly.

It is even more so an anomaly that this book could be so trope-y and cliché and yet so fresh and welcoming. I just gotta say, when I finished Beneath His Silence, I mused to myself in silence (*coughs* title pun) about how the story felt so familiar and almost overdone. Adventures in the forest? Crazy relatives? Kidnappings? Broody lords (gah, I’m such a sucker)? Governesses? Lying-about-my-true-identity trope? A heroine who puts herself in every compromising and dangerous situation possible (word from the wise: don’t talk to strangers, let alone accept transportation from them)?

Y’all, maybe it was overdone, but it sure as shootin’ felt like coming home to me. I’ve grown SO tired of stories that are trying to be unique or relevant but end up feeling hyper-secularized, outrageously feminist, cliché, and meaningless. All I really want out of a story these days (ESPECIALLY romance) is one that makes me feel. I get scared for the characters, yell at the characters, chant KISS HIM KISS HIM twenty-five times under my breath, resist the urge to chunk my Kindle at the wall. I want a story that transports me into it, that I get lost in, that I become a part of. (I legitimately had book hangover for days and could not get myself out of Wyckhorn Manor.)

I wasn’t over-analyzing everything the heroine said. I wasn’t shaking my head at how toxic the relationship was. I wasn’t facepalming because of how stupid or under-developed some element was.

I actually got to enjoy reading and stay up way too late to finish it and good goshing gravies have I MISSED THAT!!! God bless you, Hannah Linder, for giving me that back, even for just a night.

*sighs*

Now, onto the review…

(Because, yes, that was just the preface.)

I will be honest here, for a moment in the very beginning, I did question my earlier assumption that I would love the book. The story started WAY too quickly and just plunged right into a situation I was clueless about. Worse yet, all throughout the novel, the scenes were FAR too short—which can work for heightening suspense...but not every scene. Then it’s repetitive and loses its poignancy.

HOWEVER, I was very quickly dragged into this story. I eventually didn’t mind or notice the short scenes. I picked up on all that was going on (and totally called everything...plot twists ain’t got nothin’ on me, babe *winks*). (Also, for the record, it is not an issue to me at all if I figure out the plot twist or whatever, because it really just adds another layer of suspense, because I know, but the characters don’t. It’s fun to watch—read?—them run around like headless chickens because they have no earthly idea what’s going on. *cackles*)

ANYWAY. Where was I? Ah, yes. (Boy, have I missed writing stream-of-consciousness reviews. I don’t even have my notes with me right now.)

*returns with her notes, although she promises not to follow them too closely*

First off, let’s talk characters. Y’all know how I usually hate heroines—especially snarky, independent ones? FUHGET ABOUT IT!!! Y’all, Ella was GOLD. I kinda actually adored her?? Like WHAT???

No, she wasn’t perfect, but boy howdy! was she witty and actually tolerable enough to dance with! (*coughs * Totally a Pride and Prejudice reference...I can’t help myself.) Yes, she did get on my nerves, but she was so genuine and authentic that I let it slide. Seriously. A little bit of real development and genuine characteristics goes a whole heck of a lot farther than forcing your heroine to be something she’s not.

And Henry?

I literally do not even have words for this beautiful man. There is no question that I fully adored him—no kinda about it.

But the best part? THEIR DYNAMIC. The classic repartee and witty dialogue between them was my favorite, and the tension...the doubt...the e v e r y t h i n g. Augh. I just loved them and their interactions.

(This is where I must interject that THIS IS LITERALLY THE GOTHIC VERSION OF PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. IT’S LIKE AUSTEN AND THE BRONTE SISTERS ACTUALLY LIKED EACH OTHER AND CO-WROTE A NOVEL. IT IS PERFECT.)

(What makes it more perfect is that Austen hated Gothic fiction and Charlotte hated Austen. *sighs* I love this pair.)

(Seriously, though. Henry seems full of pride, and Ella is totally prejudiced against him. It doesn’t get any better than that.)

Moving on...Peter was a doll. My doll, because I have officially claimed him as my child. Step aside, Ella, he is mine, and I’m taking his daddy with me too.

*coughs* Hannah did do a fabulous job of writing Peter and making him seem realistic—and SO adorable!!! Two things I cannot abide are annoying kids and unrealistic kids. But Peter was my perfect baby.

On the note of Peter, I loved how Ella actually chose to love him and learn to care for him, even though she initially didn’t like kids—especially one that belonged to him. SEE? YOU CAN BE A MATURE, INDEPENDENT FEMALE AND STILL LOVE KIDS. THANK YOU.

But the very, very best part? (Cue the spoilers).

*comes back because she has more to say*

I have been wanting to read a Gothic romance for so long now, and let me just say that this was so deliciously Gothic and I love it. Not freaky or depressing, but tense and suspenseful—even when you pretty much know what’s coming?

Speaking of not being depressing, have I mentioned yet how much I LOVED the themes and the authentic faith (subtle but present and poignant)??? No? Okay, then, I LOVED IT. Hannah did what so few authors do anymore—let her characters live out their faith in a genuine way, in a way that actually speaks to the reader. Not from a soapbox or with watered-down ideals and trending terms—but heart-to-heart speaking.

Finally, the prose. If there is one thing Hannah Linder is a master at, it’s prose. I just...gah, I am so jealous. And yet so in love with the way she spins words into such beautiful tapestries. NOW, I will be honest, Beneath His Silence was written a little more simply than her self-published works, BUT everything was still delightful. The emotions, the descriptions, ACH! So. Good.

*turns pea-green with envy* *okay, not really* *but definitely feels the need for improvement in her own writing*

I think that covers everything. *glances back at notes* Yep. All good.

Long story short, READ THIS BOOK. IT IS GORGEOUS. Simply gorgeous. Lovely prose and even better dialogue, well-written characters you can’t help but love, suspense and tension and Gothic-ness galore, literal perfection...yep. Y’all need to read it. Hannah Linder has done it again, just as I knew she would! Now, when is this one gonna win an award? I’m thinking a Christy or a Carol this go-round.

The spooky season comes with its spooky reads. Christian Regency Gothic Romance. Ella is determined to expose her sister's murderer. Lord Sedgewick is a single father that is hiding secrets.
A tortured hero, a spunky-outspoken heroine on a mission, and a spooky manor home.

A stunning piece of Regency fiction! Filled with mystery, intrigue, danger, betrayal, romance, and Faith.

"Flowers are not meant to last forever...Yet for everyone that dies, God supplies a new one."

''He was weary of failing. He was weary of awakening sick and lying down with a thousand regrets."

I am impressed with Hannah Linder's writing, she captures the reader's attention.... an interesting unique plot... turns every page doesn't know what it's going to happen next, fast-paced....she is capable to draw us the soul and the frenzied thoughts of her characters, from multiple POV, without impeding the flow of the storyline...A Salvation story.

You’ll want to pick this up! If you are looking for a gothic-era read. that is full of delicious-smart -witty dialogue laced with intrigue, beautiful descriptions, heart-pounding suspense, slow-burning romance, and off-the-chart chemistry this is for you. Highly Recommend it! I'm definitely looking forward to Hannah Linder's future releases.

What a sweet ,enjoyable tale.....impressive debut! I liked the spiritual elements, how it felt quite feel as there in that Jane Austen era while reading. The formality was noticeable as it was in those days.... Ella was spunky and assertive ,Henry was admirable....The theme of forgiveness was one that was hard to come by for many as it's not easy to do in real life. I will gladly read more by this author!

My personal Rating- Two Stars (and a half)

All I need to hear is “clean regency mystery” and I’m excited to read the story. Which is what happened when I first heard about this new novel. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would and that’s possibly because I hyped it up in my head prior to reading it. It’s a bummer, unfortunately, and I have mixed feelings on this book. :(

Some things I liked: The faith content was strong throughout the story and very realistic for what the characters were going through; I particularly liked seeing Ella’s development in that regard. I liked the writing style and would definitely try another book by this author. That we see both Ella and Henry’s point of view, because if we only saw her POV, then we probably would have hated him with her in the first half of the story. (He’s dealing with his own grief and guilt over the past events, but doesn’t share his emotions with anyone else.)

What I wasn’t a big fan of: The suggestions of a creepy man towards Ella and him trying to force her to go with him into a room. The last 30% or so of the story felt very melodramatic, and while, yes, there was a lot happening, I can’t pin-point exactly what displeased me on this (part of it was partially because of someone who’s mentally ill being a villain-like figure). Henry believing in a curse on him, even though that’s not of God. Henry was interested in Ella, knowing that she didn’t believe in God and didn’t share his faith (that part is quickly resolved, but I would have preferred Henry to be at least somewhat hesitate towards her because of that). The vicar was an odd side plot. The angst of Henry and Ella’s feelings, particularly when the reveal of identities happened. There felt like there were inconsistencies in regards to the regency time period (Henry and Ella being alone together a lot, no chaperones, and elements of the dramatic ending).

So, yes, it was more of some suggestive hints and then some little things that added up and affected my enjoyment of the story, unfortunately.

4.5 ⭐️

Beneath His Silence is a story of mystery and intrigue, coupled with Jane Austin book vibes. I loved the author’s writing style and the pacing of the story, which left me engaged and excited to come back and read more chapters. I loved the characters, the plot, and how the author weaved her faith into the story in an authentic and beautiful way.

My only qualm with this book was some of the emotional angst between Henry and Ella and their constant teeter-tottering between wanting each other and then not. 😅🙈 But my complaint is small, hence why I’m only docking .5 stars.

This is a stunning debut novel with a beautiful cover to match! I look forward to reading anything else the author writes in the future!

I was able to read an early copy of this book. "Beneath His Silence" takes the reader on an emotional journey fraught with fears, distrust, and unknown dangers. Author Hannah Linder does a great job with this gothic-style historical romance. The setting is perfect and frames the story. Readers will pull for the heroine, wonder about the hero, and fall in love with the little boy. Fans of Michelle Griep’s "Lost in Darkness" will love this book.

Beneath His Silence was a stunning debut novel for Hannah Linder!

I have enjoyed Hannah's stories from the very beginning, so I was beyond thrilled when I heard Barbour Books had signed her on for a three book contract.

This story hit all the right beats combing that classic feel you hope to get with a regency read with the best parts of historical mystery tale.

Ella Pemberton was an excellent MC and I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the pages of this novel.

The fact that Hannah also included a strong faith element throughout the book that added to the story as a whole was also lovely.
I am a big fan of when Christian Authors strive to do this and do it well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read and cannot wait to see what Hannah writes for book number two -
When Tomorrow Came releasing in April 2023!

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Characters: Both Henry and Ella were well-developed characters. I'm not a fan of brooding characters, so I found Henry frustrating at times. I enjoyed Ella's spiritual arc.

Language: Clean.

Moral/theme: This novel featured themes of salvation, guilt, and trust.

Plot: Plenty of drama, moments of suspense, and an air of mystery kept the plot moving right along. From the other reviews I've read, I believe Beneath His Silence drew inspiration from some of the classics. I'm not a big reader of the classics, but those who are will enjoy finding the similarities.

Random comments: I love the cover!

Romance: Clean. Just kissing.

Writing: Hannah Linder's writing worked well for this novel. The characters' dialogue seemed quite historical and reminded me of the British shows my mom and sister are fond of.

Overall: Beneath His Silence was an interesting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and Regency romances with a touch of suspense.

4.5 stars (5/10 hearts). I wasn’t sure what to expect of this book, but classic gothic is my guilty pleasure (aka the Brontës), I loved the cover, and I knew the author was very talented, so I was eager to read this. I wasn’t disappointed.

The aesthetic was really enjoyable. Storm, rain, seashore, silent semi-abandoned mansion, a lonely lord cut off from the world, a fiery Lizzie Bennett type of heroine, a sweet and silly friend, an adorable little boy, gossip, dancing, a haughty love rival, and plenty of drama—plus a suspected murder and a haunting personage. Jane Eyre meets Pride & Prejudice with a twist. I admit I am very harsh on historical fiction, especially regency, and personally I was a little disappointed with what I felt was a slightly modern flavour, but that’s my own opinion. The dialogue was well done, and I enjoyed the different accents woven in!

The characters were definitely interesting. Ella made me think of a couple Austen heroines mashed into one. I didn’t relate to her very much—our characters don’t mesh—but she was well done and very alive. I really liked Henry, though. I related to his struggles and his pain, and I loved his character arc, and how mysterious and hard to figure out he was, and what a strong, upright, loving man he was (and he was such a sweet father!). Peter was a doll, and all the side characters were so nice and living! E. was terrible, and I ended up heartily disliking L. by the end.

The plot was quite the ride. I couldn’t figure out where it was going, and began to experience the “there’s only 10% left and so much to happen!!!” problem (avid readers will understand). I did get a little tired of the back and forth “he loves me, he loves me not” or “I love her, I love her not” and all the angst, but I couldn’t put the book down and I was so anxious to see how everything turned out. I liked the governess angle combined with the undercover investigating trope.

I particularly love the beginning—Henry was so at odds with how everyone saw him, and I was desperate to discover if something had or hadn’t happened, and all the secrets and questions—it was awesome. I was a little less a fan of the ending because it seemed just a wee bit too far-fetched/modern/not regency, but it wrapped up everything satisfactorily. And the themes of the novel—learning to love & trust, learning to relinquish control to God, and learning to let go of guilt and self-hurt—were so well done. I look forwards to more by this author!

Content: adultery, an illegitimate child; accusation of murder; some violence + wounds; a mentally ill character in whose head we are (a little creepy); kidnapping; strong gothic feels. MASSIVE SPOILERS! END OF MASSIVE SPOILERS Some non detailed hugging/kissing/touching. Several uses of “bloody” + mild language (dash, etc).

A Favourite Quote: “I have very little appreciation for assortments that will only die tomorrow. I should rather devote time and attention to things that never change.”
“Flowers are not meant to last forever.... Yet for every one that dies, God supplies a new one.”

A Favourite Humorous Quote: Mr. Fitzherbert’s comment on the weather could be heard from the hallway, followed by the vicar’s monotonous praise of the view from his church bell tower, from which point he could detect an upcoming storm. “Yes, yes, storms are much better borne when one is made aware,” answered Mr. Fitzherbert.

I didn’t plan to start and finish this one in a day but once I started it, I couldn’t put it down! It was so good. The writing, the characters, the plot. There was secrets, betrayal, danger, secret identity, faith, sweet romance… everything I want in a good regency. 🥰
My attention was captivated from start to finish.

The characters came alive for me. Ella, Henry, Peter… they all made their way into my heart. Ella was truly a great heroine. She was kind and strong. I loved watching her journey to finding God. And Henry was one of those characters you admire and are a little intimidated by but you also want to go up and give him a long hug. I loved them together. I loved watching them both grow, separately and together. Their story was beautiful.💗
And Peter was precious. I adore when children are involved in the plot and Peter was a sweetheart.🥰 It was the sweetest thing watching Peter make his way into Ella’s heart. Ahh! I truly love governess stories.

The faith was so good. I love a good redemption arc and this one really touched me. These characters are broken people just like the rest of us, and their journey to Jesus was inspiring.
I loved the writing style! It was definitely my cup of tea. Certain scenes hit hard just because of the way it was written. It was so good.

In conclusion, I loved this book! It had all of the elements of regency books that I love. It was also unique. It definitely gave me Jane Austen as well as Charlotte Brontë vibes. Like Pride and Prejudice meets Jane Eyre. If that doesn’t convince you to read it, I’m not sure what will. 💕
I recommend to anyone who loves a good regency romance with all of the intrigue, romance, and faith! I’m definitely looking forward to Hannah Linder’s future releases and so excited to see more regency romances like this in the Christian fiction genre!

She's full of hatred and wants to complete her father's pursuit of bringing her sister's murderer to justice.

So many secrets in this story. I was nearly bursting in the first quarter of the book to know them all! Ella Pemberton arrives at Wyckhorn Manor under an assumed name, to be the governess of her nephew. Lord Sedgewick doesn't want his son to lose anyone else in his life, so this new governess he urgently wishes to keep - for his son's sake, of course.

As the secrets unravel will they find forgiveness? And, more importantly, will Ella receive the peace of God to dissolve the anger and hurt of her past?

You'll enjoy discovering undercurrents in the trope derived from one of the classics - but I can't tell you lest it become a spoiler. If you're a fan of gothic, regency romance, you're gonna love this!

Gothic feel to this debut! The author does a great job of creating a dark mood.

Ella Pemberton is out to seek justice for her sister Lucy. Lucy was murdered by her husband Lord Sedgewick and Ella is willing to risk herself to learn the truth of what happened.

Ella gains access to Lord Sedgewick's home by pretending to be a governess under a false name. Over time, the details revealed don't fully align to Ella's preconceived perceptions.

The atmosphere in particular was beautifully brought to life. The sharp retorts between Miss Pemberton and Lord Sedgewick were fun and lightened the heavy mood. Quite a bit of action toward the end.

Well done debut. I look forward to reading more by the author.

My gratitude to the author and Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Loved This Story!

I loved the characters, Ella, Henry, and Peter. And though it was heartbreaking as well, at times, it was a beautiful storyline and a fulfilling read. I love Hannah Linder’s writing and her books!

UPDATE:
I am sorry for being late with the whole of my review, but I was just so excited to finish that I had to give a few words of how much I really enjoyed and loved the book. So here is the rest of my review. I wanted to share a little more, so hopefully it’s okay and you’re up to reading a little more 😁

Review for Beneath His Silence
Author: Hannah Linder
Publishers: Barbour Publishing
Genre: Christian fiction/ Historical Regency Romance
Main characters: Ella, Henry, Peter, and Ewan

Introducing characters:

Henry and Peter, father and son Ewan, Henry’s brother. Ella, Lucy‘s sister (Henry’s deceased wife. Ewan’s mistress.)

Review:

In this Historical Christian fiction written by Hannah Linder it starts out with Ella wanting to know or needing to know what actually happened to her sister Lucy. What actually happened to cause her death? She believes Lucy‘s husband killed her. She comes to find out, after she gets there, that that isn’t so. She comes there to be a governess to his young son, Peter. Well, pretends to be a governess. Peter, Henry’s son, loves her almost immediately. And Ella begins to love him as well. You will have to read this book for yourself to realize how good it is. There are many twists and turns. Things you think you know or have figured out, but you have not. This is a beautiful story. Where faith in God perseveres. No bad language. No sexual content, just gentle, loving romance. I loved the little tidbits of faith here and there throughout the story.

This gothic Regency tale was filled with shadows and silence and mystery. Ella had so much hatred in her heart when she first arrived. It had built in her heart over the years from hearing her father state that he was convinced that Ella’s sister was murdered by her husband. It was interesting to see that even the people who lived in the village whispered and wondered what had truly happened to Lady Sedgewick. It was all hushed up and swathed in rumors.

It was clear that Lord Sedgewick was carrying a lot of guilt around and that there were things that he kept hidden from the outside world. It was interesting to watch as Ella began to have her eyes opened to the fact that Lord Sedgewick was not a bad man, even as she still wondered what could possibly have happened with her sister to have him still so wreathed in guilt.

This novel slowly unveiled its secrets in the shadowy way that many of the gothic novels of old did. The difference with this story was the faith journey for Ella. Even Lord Sedgewick grew in his walk with the Lord and eventually gained a peace that he had been without for so long. I enjoyed watching an attraction brew between the main characters as they struggled with truths, forgiveness, and learning what love truly was.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

The spooky season comes with its spooky reads.
Ella is out for vengeance to get the murderer of her sister. So she enters his house under the pretense of being a governess. Thus, meeting her nephew and her sister's husband or may or may not have killed said sister. She proceeds into gradually changing her mind about him and accidently falling in love with him and discovering all of Wyckhorn Manor's secrets.
By the end of the book they find common ground in their love for Peter, religion, respect, admiration, and love for each other.

The author sets the premise of the book as mysterious and spooky from the very first chapter. However, the tone changes into thriller half way through it.
It doesn't leave you wondering for long since the mystery gets revealed early on in the story.

There are some things I didn't like in the story and were odd. For example, I know it was a different time back then but I find it super strange that Ella's never met her sister's husband. Also, it felt like the story stretched out for longer than it should've been.

“You may be a bit presumptuous, Miss Woodhart, and may lack certain habits of good etiquette. But in dancing, you exceed many—and in loveliness, I have known no equal.”

“Beneath His Silence” is a standalone christion, historical fiction romance with a gothic atmosphere. The plot follows Ella Pemberton, as she journeys to discover what really caused her sister’s death.

Ella Pemberton has lived the most recent years suffocating under the shadow the death of her sister caused. Her father has gone near mad, journeying every year to Lucy’s matrimonial home, determined to prove she was murdered by her husband. At his death, Ella decides to finish up his mission. For her father, for her family, for herself and more importantly, for Lucy.

Ella’s journey was that of discovering faith all the while planning revenge. She had never considered her faith an important thing but with her father’s recent conversion and Lord Sedgewick’s unshakeable faith, she is drawn to building a relationship with God.

“I can believe that God created the world,” she whispered, “but how can I believe He is the author of such dreadful circumstances?”

“I cannot convince you, Miss Woodhart, nor can I make you believe.” The evening shadows deepened around them. “I can only testify of Him. I am afraid the rest is something you must discover yourself.”

Lord Henry Sedgewick is living in guilt. He prays every night to God, asking for relief to his pain. His only joy is his son Peter. When Peter’s governess leaves, he is in search of another who will not leave. He hires a Miss Woodwart, who is unknowingly to him, Ella Pemberton. When he starts developing feelings for his son’s governess, his heart is torn.

She was just like the others . She would cut him and take no pity when he suffered. She would abandon him, and if she couldn’t hurt him in that way, she would betray him.

Henry was an interesting character. He is loving and kind to those under him yet he does nothing to dissuade the rumours that taint his name. All he cares about is that his son is happy and cared for. Henry and Peter have a beautiful relationship.

“Yes, but I fear it was not half as lovely as here.” Nor was the company. “And there was one small misfortune that kept me from visiting it often.”

“What?”

“There was no little boy to play with. It was insufferably dull indeed.”

Peter’s mouth widened with a grin, and he laughed.

Henry also provided the humorous moments of the book. The man has a filter but the times he decides not to use it were hilarious.

“I might have taken offense to your speech, my lord, if you had not so delicately called me a goddess.”

Her eyes glimmered. “Is that how you think of me?”

“I hardly think of you at all unless forced.”

The mystery aspect of this novel was mesmerising. With the little snippets shared as you continue reading, it builds anticipation to the reveal of what exactly happened to Lucy Pemberton. The mystery kept me reading but the relationships were what made me stay. Peter and Henry. Peter and Ella. Henry and Ella. This was a beautiful read that everyone needs to get their hands on.

“You see , I. . .” His forehead tightened as if the words were hard in coming. “I. . .”

“I know.” His eyes sought hers.

“I know,” she said again. “Because I too have no words to describe such a thing. Yet I’ve heard it called love by more than one poor fool.”

Woah...this is a haunting and captivating debut and I can't wait to read more from this author!

This Gothic suspense has Jane Eyre vibes and is perfect for fans of Jaime Jo Wright and Michelle Griep.

I was hooked from page one and although I figured out most of the plot early on, I believe it was intentional and didn't hinder my reading at all. Instead of wondering what was going on, I was eagerly waiting to see how the characters handled all the new twists and turns thrown at them.

Also, the faith elements were beautifully woven throughout and so well-done. I loved seeing the faith in this story and how that was where the characters were placing their hope and trust.

This book was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be; gothic and angsty with a little bit of romance to sweeten it up. I really liked the dual POV between Ella and Henry and I had an easy time distinguishing their voices. Their character development was paced really well, as was the plot. I liked how the mystery was revealed bit by bit and it was appropriately suspenseful, but not overly so (my preference!). I do wish there had been a few more conversations between Ella and Henry to deepen their relationship more, but their romance was still very sweet and I enjoyed it regardless.☺
I definitely look forward to Hannah’s next release!

What a gobsmacking debut by an author here in my home state. Ms Linder has undertaken a tough storyline blending a gothic feel regency with faith and enemies to romance characters. It has many twists and turns like a spiral staircase in a mansion located in Devonshire set in 1814. This story deals with loss and forgiveness not just of others but oneself by carrying a burden that only God can carry for us. I love the faith that Lord Sedgewick has and how he shares it with Ella but gives her space to find her own way. I love the addition of the child Peter and my heart was totally involved. Grab a cozy blanket, a hot cup of tea and settle in for a page turning evening of must read Christian Historical Romance. I look forward to more by this author.

4 1/2 stars!

Wow, this was an amazing debut novel and I can’t wait to see what this author does next. Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorites, and this book had all the nods and gothic atmosphere of the beloved Charlotte Brontë classic while providing a unique original twist. Secrets, mystery, murder, romance, and hidden identity made this book a definite page turner.

What happened to Lucy? As the impetuous, somewhat mischievous sister, Ella can find no reason why anyone would want to hurt her good, kind older sister. Determined to avenge Lucy’s death and wreak havoc on the man she blames, Ella formulates a plan to expose the truth when an opportunity presents itself for her to become her nephew’s governess. Having never met her brother-in-law, she easily disguises her name and begins teaching her sweet nephew Peter. What she doesn’t expect is Lord Henry Sedgwick. He’s far from the monster she imagined. He’s a kind, doting father, who’s generous to his tenants and servants, and possess a growing faith in God. It’s hard to believe he killed her sister. But, there are secrets in the house which threaten all that Ella holds dear. Will she discover the truth before it’s too late?

Lord Henry Sedgwick can’t help but be bitter. Every woman in his life has betrayed him including his own mother. His guilt and hatred threaten to destroy every chance for future happiness until a beautiful governess enters his life. Her aloofness and forthright manner draw her to him. He’s intrigued by the one woman who doesn’t seem enamored with his title or judgmental of his past. The more he tries to push her away, the harder it is for him to deny his feelings. But secrets from the past threaten their growing love and when the truth comes crashing down, will she still love him?

This story had so many twists and turns! I don’t want to say anything more because it’s better not knowing too much going in. The characters are complex and intriguing and I loved those moments as Ella and Henry are falling in love. I loved when they practice dancing and go horseback riding. Because of all the secrets, you feel like you’re holding your breath the whole time just waiting for that other shoe to drop. There’re definitely some suspenseful moments that had me hurriedly turning the pages. I also loved the way the author weaves faith into the story.

This is a must read for gothic Regency romance fans! If you enjoy Abigail Wilson or Michelle Griep, you’ll enjoy this story. I received an advanced complimentary copy from CelebrateLit through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

Edit: I was talking about this book with my husband and I realized one of my top reasons for also not being able to get pulled into the emotions. This is a minor spoiler, but very key to my dislike of the story

There are times I finish reading a book many friends loved and I didn't and I ask "What is wrong with me?"

But, I'll be honest and admit I didn't enjoy this book. It honestly felt melodramatic from beginning to end (but especially the last quarter or so of the book). So many times people lied and told half-truths and it was so obvious I didn't understand why anyone fell for it.

I sadly never felt pulled into the story, perhaps this was because of the switching between the two main characters many times in each chapter. Perhaps it is my fault for just not being able to get past that style.

So many things were underexplained and implausible. I just never felt pulled into the emotions of the story, never felt the transformations, or the joy.

This wasn't a bad book, just not one I enjoyed. SO. MUCH. MELODRAMA.

Content notes: This will contain spoilers for the story

What a stunning piece of Regency fiction!

This story is reminiscent of Jane Austen with a strong Lizzy Bennett-like heroine and filled with all the Gothic intrigue of Northanger Abbey.

Ella truly is a firecracker with the best of intentions, and I loved seeing her grow throughout the story. Our tortured hero Henry is so broken and complicated and yet tender. Dear little Peter is a sweetheart who adds a layer of lightheartedness amid the shroud of mystery.

Every page of this tale is filled with touching moments of faith, grief, and finding healing in brokenness. Add to that a hefty dose of intrigue and a several intense moments, and I was hooked with every chapter.

I look forward to reading more from Hannah in the future!!

'He was weary of failing. He was weary of awakening sick and lying down with a thousand regrets.'

This was a seriously good book. Hannah Linder is a new author to me and this is her debut novel. If this is how she starts off, I am a forever fan! Well done!

I love a good Regency very much indeed and Linder does this genre quite well. It is a story of unforgiveness, bitterness, agony, but also a story of restoration and the mercies of God. It is gothic in tone, with more than a touch of intrigue, with danger thrown in, and it is also heart-soaring with a strong romance that is deeply felt. I was captivated the entire time. I quite simply loved everything about it. I can't wait to read more by this author.

My thanks to Barbour Publishing for a copy of this book. I was not required to leave a review. The opinion here is completely my own.

Wow! This story is layered with intrigue and evokes such an gothic atmosphere! The setting was perfectly eerie and gives definite Poldark vibes! The characters are multi faceted and the plot has so many layers. This book really sucks you in and it’s one that really immerses you into it’s story. It definitely kept me guessing, and the danger was a threat right up until the end! I was so impressed with this debut novel! I really enjoyed how mysterious this plot was and I absolutely loved Henry! This one will keep you on the edge of your seat and will keep you asking questions until all is revealed!

Beneath His Silence is a fabulous Regency story with a gothic setting, a well thought mystery, some angst and suspense .

Miss Ella Pemberton wants to find out what's happened to his sister at all costs, even sneaking into the solitary manor on the cliff pretending to be a governess. Will she make Lord Sedgewick confess all his dark secrets?

I liked the characters, they are well charaterised with such strong and clashing personalities, but in the end you can follow the organic blooming of a loving feeling.
My faourite character is Ella, I adored her. She is a woman that doesn't subdue to any man, she is bold and stubborn, at times she is impulsive, but all these and many more traits made me love her and care for her.

"In her moments of greatest despair, she would return to this view. She would open her heart to the beauty, tranquility, and brightness of the endless waves."

This was Hannah Linder debut novel and for me it's a very good begin, I've enjoyed the writing style and the pace. I was shocked for the religious theme at first but my bad because I didn't have seen that this novel was listed as a Christian read.

I recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

I received this book via a giveaway a rating, either positive or negative, was not required, but my on my - !! I cannot keep silent. 😂 Never, since "The Daughter Pays", has a book gripped my heart and mind as this one! I rarely if ever read modern historical fiction as it just doesn't jive with me, but this novel, with its rich language, briskly paced yet with a delicious depth of atmosphere, spine-tingling mystery (to be cliché, but absolutely accurate), and characters whose trials had you aching alongside them, completely stole my heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed Beneath His Silence. As I was reading it I was getting the whole gothic Jane Eyre feel to it. Which I am totally in for! The heroine, Ella Pemberton is looking to expose the killer of her sister by pretending to be a governess. The hero, Henry is hiding secrets and is filled with guilt. The book has a slow burning romance, danger, intrigue and so much more. I couldn't believe this was a debut novel. Well done! I look forward to more books in the future by this author.
