There's a story by the Argentinian doctor Jorge Bucay about a huge circus elephant who, after using his enormous strength in each session, would be tied to a chain fixed to a small stake in the ground.
It was just a small piece of wood, buried a few centimeters in the ground, and it was obvious that this formidable animal could, with very little effort, pull out the stake and escape from such an enslaved life. But why didn't he?
The answer is that he had been tied to that stake since he was very young, when he had tried many times to pull it out, without success. Having failed in spite of all his efforts, he resigned himself to believing that this was his destiny and took on the NO I CAN'T attitude.
Over time, the elephant grew, gained weight and multiplied his strength, but, bound by his old belief, he never tried again.
Now he could pull it out without any problems, but he doesn't know that.
How many stakes do we keep in our lives because we keep harboring an old, lapsed I DON'T LIKE IT? […]"
