A grumpy bartender learns he’s a dad in Kelly Siskind’s latest Bower Boys romance full of second chances, small-town charm, and steamy, slow-burn heat.
For the last ten years, I’ve been living a lie in witness protection. But the drug cartel that put me there isn’t a threat anymore, so I can have my life back. I should be thrilled, right?
Wrong.
The last thing I want to do is go back home and show everyone how far I’ve fallen. I’m not the high-powered lawyer they all expect me to be. I’m just a guy who slings drinks and scowls at the world.
But then I hear about Max, my ex’s ten-year-old son. My ten-year-old son.
I have to go back now. Figure out how to be a dad. Face the love of my life. Make things right with Sadie and earn her trust. Will she have me—or is it too late to reinvent myself as the man she once loved?

This was a pretty good second chance, small town romance. I liked that single mom, guy who didn't know he was a dad redemption arc and the sensitive, my child might be gay discussions. But overall this was just an okay story for me. I don't know if it's the narrator or what but this series as a whole so far just hasn't been doing it for me. Probably a me thing, definitely decide for yourselves! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
The author sure knows how to write a charming book, with just enough drama to keep the readers on their toes, a lot of humor, compelling side characters–sometimes even more than the main characters–and a witty writing style that puts a smile on the readers’ face.
Considering the premise–a family that’s been on witness protection for more than ten years finally comes back to the small town they lived in before–it’s again a second chance romance. We had hint at a girl left behind in Desmond’s life in the previous book, with E eager to help his brother get back to the love of his life. We also learn that Des left something else behind: a son he wants to meet and take care of.
So we have this guy who left town successful and on his path to a bright future, but whom leaving behind his girlfriend broke him, making him angry and prompt to bad decisions. He literally lost his future, and lived day by day. But coming back to Sadie, and their boy, means forging a new future to stay in their lives forever. With the book told exclusively through Desmond’s point of view, we experience his struggles, his misunderstandings, his doubts, and his epiphanies.
I loved that, especially given the path he chooses to start his new life. It put him in hilarious situations, and forced him to reconsider who he is and what he wants. Thankfully, he has people around him to guide him, because he’s quite lost at first.
Desmond with Sadie–the romance of the book–was nice. They have good chemistry, and a past full of memories together. That means cute scenes, seriously hot scenes, and some arguments when the time comes to make decisions. But the very best part of this book is Desmond with Max, his son. They have lots of conversations, with Des discovering a bit more of the kid each time, and learning how to be a father. It was beautiful.
Also good? Desmond with Olivia. Through his interactions with the little girl, he’s exercising his parenting skills.
The Bower family is something else for sure, but the love the brothers and their mother share is inspiring, and makes for emotional scenes.
It’s a perfect score for this series for now. Fingers crossed for the next book.
Quickie
- Series: Bower boys #2 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #small town romance #second chance romance #single mother #secret baby - Triggers: past parental psychological abuse, mention of cheating from a side character - Main couple: Sadie Jones & Desmond Bower - Hotness: 3/5 - Romance: 5/5 - + the positive reactions to a child possibly coming out - – communication, guys, it’s a thing
Desmond and Sadie’s story hurt my heart. These two have been through so much. I loved the glimpses of their shared histories and also seeing them discover each other again after more than a decade apart. I did feel that things progressed a little too quickly once they started to date, but I loved how all in Desmond was. These Bower men are so gone for their ladies!
I also appreciated how much care was taken with Max and his feelings about moving, meeting his father, questioning his sexuality, etc. I actually wish Max's character would have been further explored. 10 Signs You Need to Grovel is a love story between father and son, just as much as it is about romantic love. Olivia and Mirielle were hilarious and they helped break up some of the heavier moments in the book. The pacing of the story was a bit slow at times though, which made the book feel too long. I also didn’t love the final conflict, but the ending and epilogue were so sweet and perfect for these two.
I both read the ebook and listened to the audiobook of this one. Julian Durant’s narration was good, but unfortunately I didn’t love it. He used a variety of voices so it wasn’t a problem differentiating between characters, but he voiced Desmond so gravelly that it made my throat hurt.
I’m not normally a fan of the secret baby trope, but this second chance romance won me over. It was set up really well in book 1, which made it easier to accept and allowed me to focus more on Desmond and Sadie reconnecting. The book can be read as a standalone if you want to jump right in, but I think it’s a much more gratifying experience if it’s read in order.
Tropes: Forced proximity, second chance, childhood friends to lovers, secret baby CW: MMC was in witness protection for the last 10 years, mentions of money laundering and threats to safety, grief, MMC engaged in destructive behaviors/would go missing for stretches of time (past), secondary character mentions parental infidelity, plotline involving secondary character questioning their sexuality, toxic parental relationships (past)
A five-star read that will have you hankering for wilderness. This is number two in the Bower Boys series, you could read them as stand-alone as each story is about a different brother, they do pop up in each other’s stories, but they are complementary rather than the whole package. This time, its grumpy grizzly Des, well that’s what I like to call him anyhow, but he is a man of many names, but that’s a whole different matter. Des comes out of his shell and unfurls like a beautiful rose as this story progresses, and you know he would hate the description, but it fits so well for him, well if not a rose, then a hardy plant from the forest. Watching him learn how to interact with Max, and be so open was a joy to read, the author dealt with a tricky subject so well, it made you care passionately but also deeply understanding and not want to rush the story as it unfolds as it should. These Bower boys are something else, life has thrown them through the ringer, but they have come back fighting for what they need. They are so much more than the man who produced them, and a lot of that is to do with Des, he may not have felt a part of it while they were away for ten years, but I think he was a lot of the gluer that kept them fighting, even if it was just fighting to find him.
Desmond Bower was the golden boy, star quarterback, most likely to succeed back in HS. He was driven and had all his ducks in a row to fulfill his every goal, but just as he aced his first year of Law School and was ready to propose to his HS sweetheart, his family was uprooted and he took a turn on a bitter path that has scarred him both physically and emotionally. Ten years later, when everything seems to be working in their favor and the family is ready to recover their lost identities and lives, his ex, Sadie Jones, comes back to Windfall and they all learn he’s the father of a young boy. The time comes to make some really tough decisions and work out his demons. This book is another second chance hit in my catalogue. It delves in the emotions of a complex man who takes the hit of being taken from his path to a successful life with the love of his life so hard that I felt my heart break for him with every new thing I learned about his poor choices and how they affected the outcome of his life. Sadie and Max are of course the perfect fit for him. She’s a strong, independent woman who’s ready to do anything for her son’s happiness. He is an amazing kid; sensitive, loving, creative and without a mean bone in his body, seeming more E than Desmond, but the perfect blend for a younger Bower boy. All of them and the other characters readers are meant to love, especially the mini-Freud, with the small-town backdrop and all the artsy stuff they live and breathe, make this book another hit on the Bower Boys series and one you are meant to love. As hard as their lives have been and their decisions to finally come together are, the road of self-discovery is a tough one and Desmond, as usual, doesn’t excel at it. He’s the most imperfect Bower and a difficult one to beat IMO. Really loved their story and can’t wait for the next in the series.

This is the first book I read by Kelly Siskind, and the reason I picked it up was that it contained two of my favorite tropes: second-chance and single parent. I thought this book was okay but I just didn't love the single POV told by Desmond (Des), the main male character. It just made it difficult for me to connect to Sadie, the main female character. I think I would've enjoyed this book so much more if it was dual POV. I did think Des' and his son Max's interaction was amazing. It is obvious that Des is a great guy who has been dealt a very bad hand.
I also loved Des' plan to get to know his son better by leading an outdoor program. There was a twelve-year-old girl named Olivia who joined the hiking program, and I really loved her character. She annoyed and always had the upper hand with Des which was a very nice addition to the story. I didn't love the romance part of the story, mainly because I didn't know what was on Sadie's mind. I also didn't think the title matched the story but overall I thought this was a light and fun contemporary romance. Also, the interaction between Des and his family was great!
"I give her hand a squeeze, then we're running and jumping, the air rushing at us...We hit the water with a crack, the force of it pulling us apart. I kick up, breaching the surface with a gasp, and there she is, the center of my world, grinning and laughing, my chest so full and warm I'm sure I swallowed the sun on my way down."
Before being forcefully placed into witness protection with his entire family for 10 years, Desmond Bower was the high school football star/golden boy on the fast track to law school with his whole life ahead of him. He even had Sadie Jones, the love of his life who he had every intention of spending forever with.
Now, Desmond is going through the motions of life as a grumpy-frumpy bartender and his mother and brothers are in and out of contact with him post-WITSEC.
When the Bower family finds out Sadie holds a secret in the form of a 10-year-old boy named Max, they tell Des as SOON as they can contact him. Des is determined to become a father for Max after being forcefully pulled away from his life, win back Sadie, and fight for the life he lost out on for the past 11 years.
WHAT THE HELL DO I DO KNOW THAT I'VE FINISHED THIS? CRY FOREVER? This book was absolute perfection for me. As a book told entirely in Des' point of view, I felt HOOKED in his journey as he tried to mold himself into Max and Sadie's life. This man was an ABSOLUTE DREAM to read. He was grumpy, but he was a big softie on the inside that cared deeply for everyone in his life under the hard exterior.
Des, Sadie, and Max lost so much time together and it was heartbreaking to read Des wanting to reconcile and build relationships with the two of them. His character arc was so satisfying to read and him becoming the best version of himself for everyone else in his life was B-E-A-UTIFUL. I was sobbing on and off throughout the whole book.
Des and Sadie fell into familiar patterns of their relationship. The way their timeline was paced in the book was PERFECT. The longing, tension, and push-and-pull of their relationship was done so precisely. They were two parents that had a little one to consider before they put their all into becoming a couple in front of Max.
Though the relationship between Des and Sadie was important, the father/son relationship Des was nurturing with Max was BEAUTIFUL. I couldn't get enough of the sweet, tender moments with Max as Des navigated his own take on fatherhood. I LOVE LOVE LOVE kids with big personalities in books, and Max was such a wonderful kid finding his place in the world as he developed a relationship with Des.
It was an absolute BLAST to be back in Windfall! This small-town, second-chance romance chocked full of witty kids, family banter, group hikes, art-piece-naming, and parental qualms is a DREAM. It's contemporary romance at its finest with its emotional, comedic, and heart-tugging energy. My favorite Kelly Siskind book by far! (I already can't wait to buy my own copy and tab the crap out of all my favorite bits!) I loved revisiting the Bower Boys and I already can't WAIT for the next book in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley, Montlake, and Kelly Siskind for an early copy in exchange for an honest review!
Kelly Siskind has certainly outdone herself with the Bower Boys Series! I’ve enjoyed every single book she’s written (and I’ve read them all) but I have to honestly say this series is by far her very best yet.
If you’ve read my review of the first book in this series, you know how much I adore E and his love of Delilah and you know I was anxiously waiting to get to know Desmond. She gave us just a little tease of him in the first book, but he’s another Bower boy who is more than meets the eye. My goodness, these poor guys have gone through hell and back in the WITSEC program and it’s heartbreaking and heart wrenching. But that said, this all leads me to the reason why I enjoy these books so much – that good always overcomes bad; that your actions have consequences and if your actions are truthful and genuine, you just might get a second chance. Desmond, Max and Sadie’s interactions were fun and honest, especially when Desmond is trying to get to know a son he didn’t even know he had. I’m finding a common denominator among the Bower Boys – they all have a soft and chewy center and I love it!! And all the characters are authentic and so relatable.
When I don’t want a book to end because I don’t want to say goodbye to the characters, I know I’ve read a winner and this is most definitely a winner. These books are the epitome of second-chance romances. Again, I wish I could give it 10+stars. I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to read an early copy of this book for my honest opinion.
This is my second book from this author, the first one was the first in the series and this book was incredible! It went certain places in the plot where I didn't think they'd go, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of her books
This is the second book in this series and I was lucky to receive an ARC. I read the first one and loved it. This story focuses on Desmond, our second brother in the series. Desmond and Sadie are high school sweethearts and have a second chance at romance after being apart for 10 years. As usual I loved the setting and characters. The story line kept me engaged and wanting more. I really enjoyed the story and can’t wait for the next one.
GAAAH! I‘ve been waiting for Desmond and Sadie‘s story and it was an amazing one!
Desmond was portrayed to be this though, take not sh*t kind of guy who has a cold heart but in this book you see a very very different side to him, which made me fall in love with him so freaking fast! I loved the banter between Desmond, Sadie and the kids aswell as Desmond‘s family!
I did really enjoy reading this book in Desmonds POV however I would have loved to see some scenes from Sadie‘s POV but it didn‘t lessen the enjoyment for me. I went through this book so fast and am so sad that i now have to wait so long for the next one.
I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.
4 stars — Oooo, this one is hard for me to rate, because I was genuinely frustrated by the lack of communication by both Sadie and Desmond. BUT there were all these other good things in the book, so I’m sticking with the 4 stars, and not 3.5…the good deserves it.
I think part of the reason I’m willing to err on the high side is that while it took WAY longer than my patience could handle, when Desmond finally figures his shiznit out, he figures it out good and we can really see how much he has grown in the time he was in WITSEC…and I really appreciated that. For someone who was such a guy guy back in the day, he was hiding a pretty sensitive heart that just got more soft and squishy as time went on.
I particularly appreciated seeing how his work on the hikes opened him up and unlocked different pieces of him. And then, holy wow, the building of his relationship with his son was just heart melting to me. I adored how important Max was immediately to him, and how much he wanted to do his best by him. It was just…*swoon* There were lots of little details that made that experience richer, but I don’t want to spoil it. I thought it was done really well though.
Both Des and Sadie had the WORST habit of assuming things about the other person without talking to them. It was aggravating. I get it to a degree, but seriously…it was on the edge of too much for me. I actually put the book down at one point because I was annoyed with both of them. They’re lucky they had such great chemistry otherwise and lots of absolutely adorable (and steamy) moments together to make up for their failings. 😛
Still really enjoying the Bower family and the town (though the town wasn’t as prominent in this one). I appreciate that secondary characters play a part in the story though, it always makes it richer.
Definitely looking forward to more in this series. I appreciate that the boys are all so different, and bring something new.
I was expecting so much from Desmond’s book, after the first book how could I not, and it delivered so much more.
I loved seeing Desmond flourish from this numb and cold state he’d been in for the past ten years. I loved seeing him with Sadie again and I absolutely adore seeing him as a father. He was made for the role!
There were so many more thing I truly loved from this book but I’ll talk about them closer to release date.
"I need to show him my love is unconditional. And yeah, love. Pressure balloons in my chest, pushing at my ribs. Twisting me up inside. Not sure how this kid already has me worrying over him- this surge of protectiveness that has me ready to fight the world on his behalf- but it's there. Undeniable and emotionally driven. Max is a piece of Sadie and me. He's proof of how deeply we once loved each other, and I never want him to experience hate or hurt or ever dislike a part of himself."
I think I let out a pterodactyl like screech when I downloaded this book. The first book 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover is one of the best books I've read this year and I was dying for Desmond's story.
Desmond Bower is one of the four Bower boys that got yanked from their life and thrown into witness protection. Losing Sadie tore Des apart, but it's time for him to pick himself back up and go back to Windfall. His whole world is changing again, and this time it's because he learns he has a ten year old son. Going back means being a father to Max, seeing Sadie again after a decade apart, and letting himself have the life he was meant to have all those years ago.
Every time I read a Kelly Siskind book I am blown away by how much I love the men she writes. The entire book is told in Desmond's POV and we get the most beautiful look into this grumpy man's heart. We get to see Des do a full 180 and become a dad, and reconnect with not only Sadie, but his family. He got a second chance and did everything he could to make sure he wasn't losing them.
I absolutely HURT for Sadie and Des. From Des realizing what was happening as he was being taken into witness protection, and every little moment that comes after their reunion, struck right at my heart. I was rooting for these two the whole way, and watching them find their way back to each other had me crying until the very end of the book.
Rivaling my love for Sadie and Des' relationship is my love for Max and Des'. These two had me weeping. Des does everything to protect his son, from the minute he learns about him. And when he inevitably screws up, he picks up and teaches himself how to be better, and how to be the dad that Max deserves. Siskind did a beautiful job of writing a relationship between them while broaching on what it really means to love your child unconditionally.
I cannot wait for the world to read this book. My heart belongs to this little family, hiking trails, aviation, book clubs, braided bracelets, camila cabello, ugly yellow shirts.
Thank you so much Netgalley, Kelly Siskind, and Montlake for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re anything like me, you have a constant Roy Kent shaped hole in your life.
We all need more Roy Kent’s.
Well look no further! All of our dreams have been answered. I kept hoping we’d find romance novels with male MCs that are grumpy, perma-scowl marshmallows that speak fluently in grunts and grumbles. And are remarkably good with kids. Desmond 100% fits the mold.
But that is where the Roy Kent similarities end. It’s just enough to fill that hole with some much needed joy.
This entire book was stunning. Siskind is blowing me away with this “told from an entirely male POV” series. Honestly I wouldn’t want it any other way.
This book in particular was so much more than a second-chance romance. It’s a book about growth in many different forms. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it’s a very meaningful book.
I will say that I recommend reading 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover prior to reading this one. It gives you even more good insight into the Bower Boys. Plus, it’s just as excellent as 10 Signs You Need to Grovel, so you really can’t lose.
*Disclaimer* I received an eARC from the author. An honest review was provided.
I adored the first book in Kelly Siskind's Bower Boys series, 50 WAYS TO WIN BACK YOUR LOVER, so I jumped at the chance to snag an early review copy of 10 SIGNS YOU NEED TO GROVEL, and I'm so, so glad that I did because I absolutely loved it!
I felt so much for Des in the snippets that we saw of him in his brother, Ethan's, book and I was so eager to see him reunite with Sadie! I've been loving the Bower Boys series and the town of Windfall that Kelly Siskind has created, and I was so excited when I found out that Des and Sadie would be the couple in book 2! It was so lovely seeing them get their second chance and grow together!!! I love that this series is following the Bower brothers finding love...and they've all been so wonderful so far!
In 10 SIGNS YOU NEED TO GROVEL, Des reunites with his first love, Sadie, after being separated due to their family being thrown into witness protection. While the rest of his family struggled, Des took it the hardest. He spiraled, went on benders, and isolated himself...and now that they're able to go back to their lives, he doesn't feel like he's worthy of Sadie's love and also worries that she's moved on. As the blurb reveals...he also discovers that while he was in protection, Sadie gave birth to their son and he's now a dad!
I'm a huge sucker for romances where we get to see the heroes grow into fatherhood, and Kelly did an amazing job with that here. Des was such a wonderful character--totally one of those heroes who puts on a cold front, but is actually a big softie who's willing to do anything for the people he loves! And Sadie was amazing, too! She was so strong, passionate, and I loved seeing the way that she and Des worked together, and their chemsitry was sooooooo good! They had amazing banter and there were some very excellent and steamy scenes between them, too. Their son, Max, was wonderful, too! He was such a sweet, sweet boy, and I can already tell that I'm going to love seeing more of him as the series continues! I also once again loved seeing all of the fun characters that live in the small town of Windfall, and especially enjoyed getting to know the Bower family even further!
Overall, I loved 10 SIGNS YOU NEED TO GROVEL—it was a wonderful second chance romance, and left me feeling so happy and warm! While this is the second book in a companion series, you could definitely read it as a standalone—I suggest you do read E's book, 50 WAYS TO WIN BACK YOUR LOVER, too, though because amazing! I can’t wait to see what happens with the rest of the Bower Boys and am so excited for Lennon and Maggie to get their story told next…I’m also hoping we start to get some teases about the other two brothers. They’re such a mystery at this point and I really hope they’ll get books, too. Highly recommend this one to all contemporary romance fans, especially if you like them sweet and spicy!!!
I was so interested in Desmond's story at the end of the first installment in the Bower Boys series that I couldn't wait to dive into this. I was so happy when the author offered ARCs of this title because there was no way I could wait until 2023!
Desmond's story was one of perfect redemption. At the end of 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover, we see him at his worst...avoiding his family, found in the seediest of places, not living up to his potential, and so on. Siskind did a fantastic job bringing this character from this dark place through a beautiful story all the way to a well-deserved happy ending.
In the book, Desmond did a lot of work with kids. As an outdoor guide for a group of youngsters, we see him struggle with finding the confidence necessary to deal with awkward middle school age kids every day. As a former teacher, I was so impressed with how Siskind handled this part of the narrative -- the fear on the part of the adult, the crazy characteristic of the kids and what they say, and then heartfelt reactions when you're finally reaching them and they trust you.
Wrapped up in Desmond finding his true self again were two beautiful love stories; the first was his reconnection with Sadie, his high school sweetheart from whom he was unceremoniously separated due to his father's poor choices. The second is the new and blossoming relationship with the son he didn't know he had, a topic with which Siskind's character building really shined.
All in all, I absolutely recommend this book but think it's incredibly important to start from the beginning of the series. This could be read as a standalone but the reader would miss a lot of background that really brings this story to life.
*i liked this book very much, the plot was good, loved the characters and their development *i loved how des took the dad responsibility the moment he found out. And i loved des and olives relationship. *olivias and des relationship is wholesome * i didnt see any groveling tbh ( not that he did anything wrong ), but the title and the plot didnt match for me, i thought the whole book was about second chance and type of groveling but it wasn’t. *its in the mmcs pov only which is unique but i did want to see what was in sadies mind.
* no cheating * No ow drama * Little om drama( he though she was seeing some one but they were just coworkers/ friends, which made him a little jealous) * There is separation ( 10 years, they were with other people while separated) * HEA * Epilogue

This book will want to rip your heart out, so angsty and emotionally good.
Tropes: - Broken MMC - Tattooed MMC - Grumpy vs sunshine - Second chance romance - Single mom - Returning home MMC - Hidden identity
Positive thoughts: - I loved how Siskind makes us feel for Dez, he hurts and suffers all along and we feel that too. We feel his anxiety, his fear, his self-destruction and it will break you. - His love for Sadie was just... wow! so much depth and warmth in his heart, potential book-boyfriend right here. - I appreciated the funny moments in the book, they were really needed with such intense emotions. Siskind did this blend really well and I love her for that. - Let's not forget Olivia, this girl was awesome. A secondary character that will blow your mind and capture your heart. She was brilliant
Negative: - I would have loved to have had Sadie's POV. So much must have gone through her head and I would loved have known - I did think the story was a bit too easy. Everything went smoothly with Dez and Max, and Dez and Sadie. No hiccups happened (some might love this though!) - Although I loved the chemistry, I thought it happened too fast. It felt a bit unrealistic, too quick to happen.
Overall: - It was a very intense and emotional romance, that will get you crying (and laughing a bit). It's heart-wrenching so prepare yourself. - It was a fast paced read, definitely a page turner. - By the way the tattoo on the guy on the cover... is in the story and it's phenomenal! So amazing was that tattoo!
Desmond and Sadie were high school sweethearts that had their HEA ripped away due to the sudden uprooting of and need to join WITSEC for Desmond’s family. Losing Sadie and their promising life nearly destroyed Desmond, so even though his family is finally free to leave WITSEC, Desmond remains a hermit. However, his family knows something he does not: he has a 10-year old son. It takes some time to track down Desmond, but once he finds out about Max, he vows to turn his life around.
10 Signs You Need to Grovel is the second story that follows a Bower Brother post-witness protection, trying to reclaim the life and love that was lost over ten years ago. I loved that once Sadie and Des are finally reunited, they go through what’s needed to get to HEA rather than just fall back into their former routine. They have strong memories of what was and what may have been, and the attraction is still there. But they are changed by ten additional years of experience and knowledge. It’s a bit awkward and there are stops and starts until they realized that it’s more than the past and their son bringing them together in the present. However, each needs to let go of the past versions of themselves to find their way to a happy and healthy future. I was frustrated a few times when I knew all they needed to do was talk honestly and listen fully to figure out things - but they get there eventually.
That said, I had a rough time with the first quarter-to-third of the story. Here’s the thing: I read this author because I love the stories she writes, the characters she creates, and the emotions she stirs in me. This time around, the main characters make a decision regarding their son which evoked feelings of anxiety in me - so much so that it impacted my sleep one night. I was mad and uncomfortable, but fought through it. And in the end, the author wrote a lovely outcome and delightful story. But Desmond tried me with his decisions as he grows into the man and father he’s meant to be.
I also had some issues with Olivia, a know-it-all, too smart for her age hiker in Desmond’s camp, and how Desmond deals with her. I don’t care how crappy her parents are, she talks to Desmond as an equal and it’s off-putting and annoying. She bullies Des into confessing things that are way to big to put on a 12-year-old’s shoulders. Over time, the relationship balances, but I don’t like that Des’s somewhat confidant is Olivia.
After a rough start for me, I ended up really enjoying 10 Signs You Need to Grovel. I’m glad fought through those difficult-for-me moments. Desmond and Sadie share a beautiful story. Desmond reconnecting with his family brought tears to my eyes. Desmond becoming a strong, loving father for his son is heartwarming.
My Rating: B

10 Signs You Need to Grovel is book two in the Bower boys series. We met Desmond Bower in the first book and I knew right away that his story was going to be so good.
After ten years in witness protection, his life has not gone as planned. Gone was the sweet girlfriend, Sadie, and plans for law school. Instead he became Daniel, has held several odd jobs, has a man bun and got a bunch of weird/blurry tattoos.
Since their family no longer needs protection, his brothers meet with him to let him know that Sadie is back in their hometown of Windfall and has a ten year old son—HIS son.
Desmond works to get his life back together and reunite with Sadie and meet his son. He does what he thinks everyone expects of him and not what is truly in his heart, though.
I enjoyed this second chance romance so much. Even though it is a series, it can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone. Desmond and his brothers’ banter is hilarious. They each know how to push the other’s buttons. Max, Desmond’s son, was an adorable child while “but Olivia” was annoyingly funny.
Thank you to the author for the advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
'A brilliant standalone continuation of a series that's set to become a firm favourite in the book world. I'm invested & loving every word!' - The British Bibliophile
I was introduced to the wonderful Kelly Siskind via the first book in the Bower Boys series, 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover ('E' & Delilah), which earned a very impressive five stars right off the bat. For a first time reading a brand new author, I was blown away with the compelling story we were presented with, and I could not wait to get my hands on the next novel after learning of one.
10 Signs You Need To Grovel (Des & Sadie), follows the story of our second Bower boy, Des, and where his life has been and will go, now that he and his family are free from WITSEC. A situation forced upon his family as outlined in the first book, read that to find out how and why they were placed in it in the first place. It's good, I promise.
After meeting Des in book one--albeit briefly--, I knew his story was going to good if we were treated to it and here we are. The grumpy bartender's time to shine. His life in more ways than one, even after WITSEC, was about to be turned upside on its head once more after learning that he is in fact, a father. A point within the blurb which I loved! Surprise fatherhood is on of my favourite tropes, so I couldn't wait to read how Des was going to me made aware of his sudden fatherhood, and how he would meet his son.
Des is the very definition of a ruff and ready character. Hardened by unfortunate circumstances, he's the type to grunt at you rather than use words as an answer. That, however, is only a cover for the real man that lays beneath the gruff exterior. He's not the same man Sadie once knew, but she knows that he's there underneath all that he's let himself become on the outside. On the inside, Des is quite the opposite. He's a sensitive man--with a rather delicate stomach--, who knows who and what he wants, knows his mind and wears his heart under his sleeve. Kelly has written a brilliant character with Des.
Sadie is equally as admirable. Shoved into the suddenness of being a single mother upon Des' disappearance, she single-handedly raises their son until such a time when fate put them both back in Des' path. She's as much a victim of unfortunate circumstance as is Des, and manages against all odds to hold herself together while raising a reminder of a man she once knew and loved with her whole heart. When their paths did cross again, she didn't shy and run away but met their new future head on. She's willing to be there on this new road and navigate it in the best way possible so their son, Max, isn't affected. It isn't easy, then or now, but with Des at her side and with no matter what happens between them, she knows she can do it.
Their story is one of overcoming adversity, pushing past barriers both physical, emotional and mental, and working out a new normal of two people who were always meant to be together. Navigating one another, re-leaning each other, caring for a being that is half of each of them. There are struggles, speed-bumps and many hurdles both Sadie and Des had to go through, but at the end of the day would weather any storm knowing that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow after the storm, would be worth it and more.
Where I enjoyed the first book, I can solidly cement that the second book--and its characters--have my heart and from cover to cover won me over again and again.
3.5 stars. 10 Signs You Need to Grovel is book two in the Bower Boys series and is Des Bower and Sadie's story. Des is the oldest Bower brother. He was in college and headed to law school when his family's life was turned upside down and they were forced into Witness Protection. His girlfriend at the time was Sadie, who was left heartbroken when he disappeared, which only compounded when she realized she was pregnant. Now, it is ten years later and the Bowers are no longer in danger so their Witsec is over. When E, Des's brother, moved back to their hometown, he is shocked to discover Sadie living there and that she has Des's son. Des had a really rough time during witness protection, was depressed, grumpy, and led a solitary life as a bartender. Now he's shocked about his son and knows he has some big changes coming to get his life back together. He must move back to his hometown and get to know his son. He doesn't dream Sadie will give him a second chance, but their feelings for each other never went away. Can Sadie and Des rekindle their romance and become a family together with their son?
I liked this story, but not quite as much as the previous book. The previous book had a certain charm that this book is lacking and E adored his girl so much. I didn't love Des's character as much. He was a little too inconsistent of a character. He was a grump but somehow changed overnight. I also never really got the grovel from him. Sadie was also only an okay character to me. She was wishy washy and I never grew to trust her character not to break Des's heart. I definitely could have used her POV in this case. I never really quite felt the love or really connected to either character. Still, this wasn't a bad book. I just didn't quite like it as much as book one.
Overall, I am still enjoying this series. There is so much potential in this series with the Bower brothers coming back from witness protection and picking up the pieces of their old lives. I enjoyed Des and Sadie's story in general and was happy they got their HEA. I look forward to more from this fun series and Ms. Siskind in the future.

Another great book in this amazing series. I honestly didn't think we'd get this story so soon. But man does it pull at the heartstrings! Just when you think you can't get your life back you do. But what happens when what you think you still want out of life just doesn't feel the same? So many feels and missed opportunities, no wonder why the depression runs deep. This is such a good series and an original story idea. Cannot wait to get the next book!
This novel has everything to please readers. Our favorite tropes, such as: second chance romance, small town, single mother, the hero discovering that he is a father, the hero who plays the bad boy but who has a soft heart, etc. But Kelly Siskind doesn't just chain tropes, she enriches them in her own way and incorporates them into an original story. If you've read the first book, you know part of Des's story, with the difficult years in WITSEC that robbed him of his life, his love and his future. From the moment everything was torn from him, he distanced himself from his family and especially from who he really was. Today, he's covered in tattoos, but under his neglected appearance as a criminal bad boy, the real Des isn't that far off. I loved his relationship with his neighbor, a very funny and very frank old lady. The fact that she is French like me adds an extra charm lol. I loved all the activities he tries thanks to her. When he returns to his hometown and sees Sadie again, I admired his strength. He finds himself face to face with the future that was promised to him, with the love of his life that he has lost. Not just Sadie, but their son. A son he didn't know existed. He therefore discovers that to all that has been stolen from him, are added several years of his son's life. Several years of parental joy and worries. Moments of happiness. I challenge you not to feel empathy for him. Although we are sad for Des, the author does not stop at a meeting and a happy ending. Des immediately takes his new role seriously, but he doesn't know how to behave. Determined not to make a mistake. Like a good father. His solution to get closer to this child is just sublime. He takes the time to get to know him, to let him open up to him, to take an interest in everything that interests him, to defend him while making him stronger. Max is an intelligent and sensitive boy, almost too mature for his young age. Here again, the author does not offer us a caricatural secondary character, but a very important character in the story and the life of the couple, a boy with a real personality, who has his own problems. I would like to tell you about my admiration for Kelly Siskind as far as Max is concerned, but for that I would have to drop spoilers. I will just tell you that she did a superb job, relevant, intelligent, with the right words, not excessively but with sensitivity and sometimes humor. Des first makes a few mistakes that many people commit without knowing it, without wanting to. Certain ideas, certain words, are too anchored in our spirit, in our world. I loved this aspect of the story. His mother, Sadie, is an exceptional mother. Not infallible, but loving. Again, I found her relationship with Max very realistic. She adores him, she would do anything for him, she raised him wonderfully well, and yet, some things escape her. Max is lucky to have such loving and intelligent parents. The world would be so much better if it was populated only by people like them. Sadie didn't grow up in a family that was worthy of her, in a family that made her happy. Des was her great love, her light, her future. When he disappeared, she too lost a lot. Even more when she became a single mother. The life she has led in recent years proves how strong and courageous she is. Although she had to put her dreams aside, she succeeded in almost every way. She rebuilt herself and offered the best to her son. I really appreciated that she let Des take on his role as a father, that she recognizes very quickly that he suffered from their separation for which he was not guilty. I loved seeing them get to know each other again, with ups and downs, doubts and humor, and intense "physical" tension. Even if the feelings have never faded, even if the attraction has not diminished, they take the time to create good foundations for their couple and their future. They don't take the risk of hurting their son. But between them, love is inevitable, fate wants them together. Their love is epic, touching, perfect. In addition to being a magnificent love story, this novel is a family story, with the brilliant brothers of Des, a story of friendship with an old neighbor but also a cunning and funny young girl whose relationship with Des will make you laugh. Kelly Siskind, being an artist in her heart and in her soul, adds many touches of art and offers Max a magnificent talent. She also shows us that dreams evolve with time, experience, encounters. That nothing is written in stone, we can take our lives in new directions. She makes us believe in optimism, in the justice of fate, in benevolence, in tolerance, in love in all its aspects. In short, 10 Signs You Need To Grovel is an exceptional novel and it would be a shame to deprive you of such a good time.
Desmond was the golden child. He had everything going for him. But he was still just a kid when he had to enter WITSEC. He had to leave behind everything, and while he knows that he was lucky to leave with his family – with the exception of why he had to enter – he loves his brothers and his mom. But WITSEC changed him in a fundamental way.
Now that he can go back to being Desmond, he's not sure if he wants that. But when his brother shows up with some life changing news, Desmond knows that it's time to go back.
Sadie thought her world had collapsed when she lost Desmond. They had their lives planned out. She loved him and he loved her. When that fell apart, Sadie had to start over. This time, she knows that she has to make it on her own for the sake of Max.
When Sadie and Desmond come back together, it's a long, drawn-out process. And while I can appreciate all of the time that's passed, their communication styles still stink. Both still seem kind of stuck in the past and not willing to lean into the future.
This was a fun book, mostly for the other characters. The hikers were a hit for me, and I loved how they and Desmond really drew the best from each other.
I would have liked more resolution or something between the two main characters. It seemed like a lot was left unsaid and hanging for me.
I like this series, but I was hoping for a lot more in this story.

If you’ve read enough of my reviews, you’ll notice that I have a thing for book covers. Had this been the cover for the first book of the series, I would have passed on ever read it. However, the cover for E’s book (his name is Edgar), 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover, was simply gorgeous so I checked out the blurb and decided to read it. I don’t think authors realize the impact a cover has when readers are scrolling through looking for something new to read. Anyway, I think the guy on this cover is incredibly unappealing. But I loved Desmond enough in book one to overlook the cover because I wanted to see him and Sadie have their HEA.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed book one of this series. Kelly Siskind was an author I had never read and that always makes me apprehensive. But it was really good! I think I even enjoyed Desmond’s story slightly more than E’s.
This book starts about 8 months after the end of the last one. E has told Desmond that when the Bower family was ripped away from their life 10 years ago and put in WITSEC, Des’s longtime girlfriend Sadie had been pregnant. Des now has a 10 year old son he knew nothing about and he’s nervous about what kind of father he’ll be. After being angry at life for so many years, he’s anxious about reuniting with Sadie and meeting his son. I loved the way their story was told. They always put Max first and it was touching the way Desmond found his softer side when connecting with Max.
I felt that the HEA ending was definitely hard won by the two MCs. They had to learn when to give and take, and how to really listen to each other’s wishes for what their future would look like. It was hard for them to see that maybe they’re not the same people they were almost 11 years ago. It was done really well.
I’m looking forward to diving in to the next Bower Boys book. It will be Lennon’s story and it sounds really interesting after everything that has been hinted at in the first two books. So far, it’s only been these three brothers (E, Desmond, and Lennon) who have been at the forefront of the Bowers books. I’m also curious about the other 2 brothers that we don’t hear much about.
*As a side note, I tried listening to the audio that comes with this book and it was atrocious. I couldn’t even get through one chapter.
10 Signs You Need to Grovel by Kelly Siskind Rating: 5 stars Steam: 2 chilis Pub Date: 1/31
You’re looking at my first five-star read of 2023! I loved 50 Ways to Win Back Your Lover, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this second installment in the Bower Boys series.
This book is about Desmond, E’s grumpy and unapproachable older brother, who we met in 50 Ways. Angry, sullen, and prone to violent outbursts, Des is not in a good place. When he was thrown into WITSEC (witness protection) years earlier, he left behind a promising law career and Sadie, the love of his life. But now that it’s safe to come out of hiding he finds out that he has a 10-year-old son whom he’s never met. So he heads back to Windfall to try to get Sadie back, meet his son for the first time, and put the pieces of his life back together.
This series has me so emotional! This family had their lives ripped apart ten years ago, and they’re all struggling to get some of it back, little by little. Des is a fantastic character I loved watching him go from hating everyone and everything to being a loving boyfriend and father by the end. We once again only see the story through Des’ POV, which had me more emotionally invested in his journey to getting Sadie and Max back in life. He is grumpy and complex and he might be my favorite Bower brother so far.
I wanted to savor every word of this heartfelt story, but I ended up flying through it. I teared up so many times that I lost count! I am such a softie for stories involving children, especially reconciliation stories, and I fell in love with this little family almost instantly. The work Siskind did on Max’s character and what he was struggling with was well done! And Des’ constant struggles wondering if he was doing the right thing as a parent were all too relatable.
The romance between Des and Sadie had just the right amount of tension and slow burn. When they finally gave in to their feelings the spice was (fire).
If you’re a romance reader and you haven’t started this series yet, what are you waiting for? Read if you like heartwarming second chance romance, the outdoors, hilarious side characters, witty banter, the art world, small towns, and a grumpy/sunshine dynamic. Thank you so much to Kelly Siskind for the signed physical copy! I already can’t wait for Lennon’s story, which I can already tell is going to be amazing. 10 Signs You Need to Grovel is out on 1/31.
4-4.5 stars. Desmond Bowers' story is one I've been anxiously waiting to get ahold of since meeting him in the last book. Before WITSEC, Desmond was studying at Duke Law school and very in love with his girlfriend, Sadie, whom he intended to propose to. That all went down the drain in witness protection where he wasn't able to make contact with Sadie and now 11 years have passed. Des didn't finish law school and has made a series of bad choices due to pure anger, frustration and helplessness, hitting rock bottom. E has dropped the bomb on Des that he's a father and needs to come back to Windfall to do right by his son, Max.
I loved the process of watching Des pull himself out of the gutter and man up to his responsibilities, knowing he missed out on a decade of fatherhood and that Sadie was pulling double duty by herself. All of his insecurities were pushed to the forefront and Des had to face them one by one. He wanted to prove that he could be a parent, but also a friend and life partner and provide stability. That also means he has to decide if he still wants the life he carved out for himself before or to start a new path. Since nothing has come to him conventionally so far, he has to search within himself.
Des comes off gruff and guarded, but he's got a big heart and feels as deep as his brother E does. I enjoyed watching him get to know Max, those interactions were what every parent lives for. There's also a smart mouthed and sassy preteen girl named Olivia who gives Des a run for his money and she's hilarious (I kept picturing her as Erica from Stranger Things). As for his relationship with Sadie, much like E, he had to go at her pace and let her call the shots, but also be there for her in every way that counts. It's easy to see why Des fell in love with Sadie the first time and how quickly it happened again. This book was a combination of heartfelt, funny, sweet and entertaining. The dynamic between Des and his brothers is hilarious and I'm looking forward to reading about Lennon next.
synopsis — After 10 years in witness protection, Des is finally able to go back to his life from before only to find out his high school and college sweetheart, Sadie, who he’d planned on proposing to before he left had his kid.
review — I absolutely adored this book! I’m a sucker for the second chance, small town romance trope. Throw in the single parent trope (sort of) and *chefs kiss**!* I really liked the first book in this series but I liked this one even more. The writing is so easy to get through, I couldn’t put the book down. I really liked all the characters in this book, especially Des (and Olivia, she was everything). And I loved seeing the character development that Des went through to learn to accept himself as he is now and stop fighting to get back to who he was before witness protection.
What really sold me with this book was watching the relationship grow between Des and his son. The bonding moments they had were so sweet and I loved watching them get to know each other. Des and Max have a little book club of two which also provided a lot of really sweet moments. However, I would have liked to see a bit more of the scene where he tells Max he’s his dad, it felt like it ended too abruptly and I would have liked to see a bit more of Max’s reaction after the fact.
My only other critique of this book would be that it is being advertised as a slow burn, which I really don’t feel like it was. It actually felt like the relationship between Des and Sadie moved a bit too quickly. Maybe it’s because I read a Mariana Zapata slow burn just before reading this, but the relationship did seem to move much too quickly to be calling it a slow burn.
Overall, I really loved this book, the love story, the bonding between father and son, and the characters. I would highly recommend picking this one up when it comes out (Jan 31, 2023).
Thank you to the author for sending me an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
