Xiong Holonautics’ Chief of Security Green Greene has saved his company from ruin, but even greater challenges lie ahead. A deadly bombing has shattered Xiong’s newest hologram exhibition, and the evidence points to Greene’s old partner and friend, Juha Karjalainen. But the other megacorporations are after Juha, too, and they will stop at nothing to gain every advantage.
When Greene learns that Xiong’s biggest rival, Algary Applications, may be behind the attack, he must embark on a covert mission into the heart of the enemy company to discover the truth. If he succeeds, he might be able to even the playing field—but if he fails, he risks triggering all-out war between the corporations.
As Greene pushes himself to his breaking point, he finds that he must decide exactly how much he’s willing to sacrifice for his company—and for his friend.
Joshua Danker-Dake lives in Tulsa with his longsuffering wife, their three irrepressible children, and a tank full of cannibal guppies. Things he gets rather excited about include bombastic European power metal, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and conversations about science-based health and fitness. Pursuits picks up where the first, Projections, left off. It is as exciting as the first, with good intrigue and snappy dialogue. The author paints an interesting world where we follow Greene, the Chief of security for Xiong holonautics, as he tries to solve an attack on the company. The action weaves into fun areas, from espionage and business intrigue to full on, guns a blazing, action.
If you are interested in an easy read that is action packed, you cannot go wrong with this one!
This book is the second in a series (can I hope??) where first book was titled Projections (you’ll want to read that one too).
Perspectives follows on about a month or so after the events of Projections. Great world building, as in the first one and lots of “don’t wanna put it down“ action. Maybe I just have a short attention span, but both books seemed to start just a bit slowly, but I was hooked soon enough.
I was ecstatic to see that there are a number of strong female characters, who were either missing in Projections or present only with minor roles.
The inimitable Juha is back, although in the beginning of the book I wondered if he would play much of a role, but I needn’t have worried. He made an appearance in the second half and Danker-Dake sets things up nicely for a possible sequel, Juha included.
Danker-Dake’s signature humor returns - at the most unexpected moments. He has quite a talent at naming characters in ways that make you smile or even laugh.
All in all, this is an entertaining action-adventure science fiction tale, and if you haven’t read Projections yet, I would recommend you read both, in order.
The author continues the feel of the first book in the series, maintaining a tight approach to world building that allows the story to gather speed towards a breathless finish (much like jumping out of a plane!). The key characters are kept similarly tight and easily recognisable as personalities we might encounter over the course of real life - I realise some may read this as a back-handed complement, but it makes it easy for the reader to stay in the story and relate to the interactions taking place, a key component of maintaining the pace. One way to measure the enjoyment of a story is when you turn to the last page of the tale without realising you were about to get there, and you're left wanting more, and I certainly was!
