The compound walls have been breached. The Infected are upon us. There is no cure. Nowhere to hide. The only option is to run.
Alpha Jonas is my sexy-as-sin guard. The one assigned to protect me from a world doomed by chaos and disease. Now he promises to escort me to safety.
There’s just one problem. He doesn’t know that I’m an Omega.
And not just any Omega. An Omega who is about to go into heat.
I’ve spent my entire life hiding from my fate. But in our haste to flee, I left my suppressants behind.
I can either accept the inevitable. Or take my chances with the Infected.
Because once Alpha Jonas learns what I am… He won’t just knot me. He’ll claim me.
Author's Note: This is a standalone dark shifter romance with Omegaverse themes. Jonas is an unapologetic Alpha wolf, and Riley is a feisty Omega who refuses to submit.

I enjoyed this a lot it’s a prequel and features Jonus and Riley. I was incredibly excited to learn more about these two and their particular backstory ever since first encountering them previously in Andorra Sector. This one can easily be read as a stand-alone and was such an easy read. This is Omegaverse set in a dystopian future where a virus has devastated the earth totally changing society beyond all recognition. The virus mutates humans into mindless Zombies and here Riley an Omega wolf is tirelessly devoted to finding a cure to the scourge.
Riley hides her Omega designation from others believing that any alpha mate will only try and coral and control her taking away her life work and ultimately her freedom. Riley uses suppressors to hold off her heat and to give off the scent of a beta but they’re no longer working and she needs more than ever to hold off the inevitable heat and it’s all the fault of her current guard Jonus an Alpha X-Clan wolf who just smells so good to both Riley and her inner wolf.
Jonus wants Riley though she’s a beta he can’t help but crave her with an intense passion even if the little wolf herself challenges him at every turn. Riley is hostile and prickly and downright rude all in an attempt to push the delicious Alpha away. When the compound is breached both Riley and Jonus find themselves thrown together miles from civilisation and even worse Riley goes into heat totally blowing her beta cover. Now Jonus knows what she is and he has every intention of knotting and claiming the small feisty omega that he now knows is his potential mate.
I liked how strong and relatable Jonus was he wasn’t a hot-head and he was totally prepared to show Riley through his own actions how a real Alpha behaves one who cherishes and adores his mate. He is dominant sexy and totally yummy and the connection between these two was electric and so hot. Riley gets to throw all of her preconceptions out of the window as she learns through Jonus’s behaviour that the Alpha wolf she’s kept at arm's length for a year is totally the mate for her.
I loved the connection these two shared and though this wasn’t a long read I was still totally invested. This is small novel length rather than novella and there was definitely enough going on here to keep my attention. I definitely recommend this and I loved experiencing Riley and Jonus’s journey to their HEA. This was as usual well written and a fabulous addition to the series as a whole. I voluntary reviewed a copy of X-Clan The Origin.
I'm either in the worst mood known to mankind or I've lost the ability to pick books I like. This was ok. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't horrible either. It was middle of the road, quick and cute paranormal romance novel (when you don't acknowledge the pandemic aspect of the story). For some reason, this one wasn't great for me. The writing was ok. My personal issue was all the repetitive inner monologues. I just wanted the characters to get to the point. I resorted to skimming ahead in the last few chapters because I was just plain tired of it. The characters weren't bad but I never connected with them either. I've also realized while reading this novel that I don't like the idea of a pandemic in the books I read. I've enjoyed it in the past but considering how the world proved itself to be incredibly stupid in regards to dealing with an actual pandemic that's still wreaking havoc I don't want to see that stupidity reflected in what I do to relax (aka reading) because it brings up way too much sh*t that I'd rather not think about while actively trying to relax.
I adore the X-Clan series and I’ve been waiting for a book about Jonas and Riley since I was first introduced to them. While I enjoyed this novella, I’m sad that it wasn’t a full length novel in its own world and series, as opposed to part of an anthology. I didn’t think this short novella did the x-clan world Justice.
It was good, but it could have been AMAZING because there was definitely more story to tell and it felt kind of unfinished.
"Which meant I was absolutely going with option one - running " If you are a fan of the x-clan series don't pass this one up! If you have never had the pleasure of reading one of Foss' dystopian Alpha/Omega stories this is definitely the one to start with - Gently ease yourself into the chaos - lol
This is Doc Riley and Jonas' story - It's just the beginning but holy hotness! I didn't think I could enjoy the dynamics between these two more. I always wondered how Riley got so lucky with Jonas and why he never vied for top alpha. Now I know and I am ten kinds of curious
from Kingdoms of Night: A standalone fantasy romance anthology
As good as a novella gets, but I've never liked it when the heroine's a doctor or in that related field. I don't know if anyone realizes this but often, the doctor roles always portrays the character as cold, clinical and perhaps a touch bitchy or heartless....NOT that Riley is, but she does tend to stray away from the typical submissive omega. And I just always find the doctor personas BORING. I mean, compare a kickass assassin with a doctor. Obviously, I'd choose the assassin! Honestly, I wasn't a fan of her way of thinking. Yes, this was different in a good way I suppose, but if I'm reading omegaverse, I still enjoy an ENDEARING heroine, and not one with a hint of feminism. Lol. Takes away the fun of "instincts" apart from the sex.
And this is 100% just a personal preference. We all know that omegaverse's selling point is about the breeding and primitive sex, so when Riley here wasn't so keen to nurture her motherly instincts, that was a total turn off for me. Again, this is a personal preference, so don't go chewing off my head about it. :)
Lievemente monotematico.
“I’m going to bend that rebellious little Beta over my knee and spank her ass raw. Then fuck her. For days. And days.”
“I’m not a bad Alpha, little wolf. If you give me a chance, you’ll see how good I can be to you. So why don’t you put the claws away? Let me pet you. Show you what I can do with my hands and my tongue. I promise you’ll feel worshipped in the end. Because I’ll treat you like a queen. And leave you begging me for more…”
“Don’t you go all growly Alpha on me”
“But that woman left me conflicted about every damn decision in her presence due to her bratty behavior”
“Protecting her. Choosing her life over mine. Putting her first every step of the way.”
“One of these days, he’s going to bend you over and fuck that disobedience right out of you,”
“Your determination. Your intelligence. Your feisty little attitude. Your dedication to a cause. All of the above.”
“Your bratty side makes me want to fuck you,” he told me. “It makes me want to punish you, too.”
“Making a woman come for minutes rather than seconds. Forcing her to beg me to stop so she can breathe”
“You wouldn’t be my property, Riley. You would be my mate. My cherished partner in life. The woman I would do anything for, and the wolf I would vow to worship and protect until my last breath.”
“Patience, Omega. It’s my job to worship you. And I’m going to do just that.”
“I’ve got you, sweetheart. I always have you.”
“And you’re my favorite challenge of them all.”
“I’ll always be inclined to pleasure you. Especially when I’m”
“You are mine, Riley Campbell. And I’m about to demonstrate what that really means.”
“Oh, macushla, if I could keep you, I would. But it would be a crime on my part to hold you back from shining like the jewel you are.”
“Want to knot me so everyone knows I’m yours”
“You will never reprimand my mate. If she does something that offends you, you inform me and I will handle her punishment.”
“Yeah, my Omega likes being a brat, I thought at him. But she’s my brat.”
I have to admit, I only read this to complete the X in an "A-Z Challenge".. oops.
I had very low expectations, and I'm not planning on continuing this series, but it wasn't quite as bad as I had originally expected.. It was pretty predictable, and some of the worldbuilding elements were convoluted or just plain silly. The characters were generic and mostly forgettable, but as someone who does not often read in this genre... the anatomy was... hm.
Maybe I'm missing out... I don't know.. but I spent a good chunk of the book thinking "knot" was just the author trying to invent another nickname for a certain male body part. However, come to find out that (after a lot of confused googling.. I don't suggest that) it's actually a recurring element in many smutty shifter books.. if you don't already know, I'll let you figure that one out.
In the end, it was a quick read with lots of predictable elements and eye-rolling stereotypes, but I still found myself wanting to know how it played out.
"If she desired my knot, she would be recieving all of me. Because I refuse to go halfway with her. I was done waiting on the sidelines and bowing as required. On this one thing, I would demand submission."
Lexi C Foss is my go-to author when I’m in need of smutastic shifter romance. Whether they are good, great or fantastic, I always enjoy them. X-Clan fit the bill. A reluctant Omega (moonlighting as a Beta) who is clever and feisty and doesn’t want to be a dictated by her designation, and the Alpha Bodyguard tasked to protect her. It all goes pear shaped when Riley and Jonas are forced to flee from their compound and Riley goes into heat.
But here’s the thing when you make generalisations, you end up eating humble pie. Riley made the mistake of assuming that Jonas was like all other Alphas, thus treating him badly. However, she is forced to grovel when she desperately needs to be cared for and knotted at her most vulnerable moment. It was a nice mix up of dynamics! This was quick, smutty and delicious!
This story is good but I can't quite give it 5 stars. I have not read any of the other books so I feel like I'm missing things. There's small things missing about the different types of wolves and what other types of supernatural beings are out there. I want to know more about this world. I plan to read more from this series and learn more. Lexi and Jonas have an interesting relationship with a lot of tension. Their plans go sideways and they have to find a way to survive on their own. There is some action with invading infected/zombies as well as some other enemies. The story centers strongly around Lexi and Jonas's relationship as well as Lexi coming to terms with her wolf's social status. I get the feeling that there's darker things in her past than what is told here but she still manages to come to terms with herself and her wolf. The character building is really good, I just wished there was more world building. I recommend 18yrs or older as there is explicit adult content.
I found this book by happenstance while looking for a book that started with 'X' to fulfill my alphabet challenge and actually ended up really liking it.
After finishing 'Lights Out', I felt like I was sliding into a reading slump, but this was the perfect quick read to keep me out of it.
Jonas was the perfect alpha male. He was sweet, charming, and respectful. I definitely understood where Riley was coming from when it came to her freedom and to wanting to pave her own path by getting her degrees and living her own life without a man dictating what she did and did not do, but I did wish she didn't project her generalizations onto everyone. Because it seems like Jonas was always a perfect gentleman with her and all she ever did was give him a hard time because of how she felt about Alpha's or what she knew them to be.
Other than that, I don't feel that the writing was the greatest, but it didn't take away much in terms of enjoyment factor.
While this book is supposed to be a prequel to the main series and while I didn't necessarily feel like I was missing something while reading this, I could see how it would be better to start with the main series before reading this. But I will also say what happened in this book also has me looking forward to starting the other books in the series.
This tells the story of Riley and Jonas, who we meet in Ander’s story, the first book in the X-Clan series proper. This one predates that book by some time, and is set shortly after the start of the zombie contagion, and therefore towards the beginning of the apocalypse that provides the background for all the books in this shared world. Riley and Jonas are at the CDC when it becomes overrun by the infected, making them to have to leave in a hurry. One emergency plane landing later, and they finds themselves having to run through infected lands in search of safety- and Riley has just gone into heat.
An enjoyable post-apocalyptic Omegaverse story, this is for those who like the Omegaverse dynamic against the backdrop of a changing world. It’s an engaging story, with likeable characters, and some fascinating world building.
This story is uniquely written with more of the Omega thoughts and concerns than the Alpha. I fell immediately into this and could not put it down. The world ending, zombie, apocalypse storyline is not as in depth as I would like but I don't feel like I missed anything. The character development is intense and succinct. Jonas and Riley are perfect together they compliment each other well. This is an alpha and omega like you have rarely seen before. The run for safety through North Carolina is done extremely well. The twists and turns will keep you guessing and the need to finish is strong. I enjoyed this book and will read the rest of the series.
The word “knot” in all its variations is used 129 times in 192 pages. Yeah, I’m out, before I even managed to get into the series. One and done for me. Repetition is like needles under the skin and it’s completely distracting from the actual story, which was just okay due to the bratty heroine. I can’t imagine how many times the word is used in the regular sized books. It’s substituted as a euphemism for sex and/or penis. Note to the author: there are a lot of other words! A thesaurus is not hard to come by.

This a new take about an about zombies with a different take on it. Riley is a one of a few shifters that are trying to find an antidote to stop it finishes the human population but to also make sure the shifter population stays safe. Plenty of action between getting away from the zombies to making their way to a safe place. When Riley can't stop her heat that she has been hiding from Jonas. Will he keep her safe, let her decide what to do about her heat and if they have a place safe to be all all that she is.
I want to start off by saying I have to get my hands on the other books in this series! They could easily become some of my favorites. This book was such a great read and had just the right amount of spice in my opinion. The characters had so much depth and I love that Jonas and Riley aren't the typical Alpha and Omega characters. I sure hope we see where their story leads as they build a life together in the Andorra Sector.
Loved this. Had no idea it was a shifter series, but that was a pleasant surprise for sure.
I did feel a bit lost with all the clan names and stuff. It felt like I was missing some things. Didn't make the book any less enjoyable though.
I really liked Jonas and Riley. An Alpha who knows what he wants, but is still respectful and caring. An Omega who's anything but meek. Perfect combination.
Also, I'm a sucker for post apocalyptic books. That also was a pleasant surprise.
This book is a romance about Riley and Jonas. First of all the world building is really good. A virus has caused a pandemic and affected humans become zombie-like. Riley is a physician and works at the CDC trying to discover a cure. She is also a wolf shifter and an Omega. Jones is her bodyguard and an Alpha wolf shifter. Lots of action and a satisfying HEA.
I absolutely love this series and can't believe that I skipped over this book somehow! I loved getting the back story on Riley and Jonas and seeing how they evolved to be the couple that has been in all the other x-clan books.
I just love the way Lexi C Foss does a shifter, omegaverse storyline. ITs always SOOOO GOOOD.
I’m doing a reading alphabet challenge and I needed an X! What I didn’t expect was so like this as much as I did. I thought it might be middle of the road but it was so good! It’s been so long since I read a good shifter book, like no one is making them anymore. It was like a starch that needed to be itched lol.
A great intro to the series if you haven’t started yet! Riley and Jonas pop up in the series and it was nice to get their story. I loved the push and pull between the characters. Riley was definitely feisty and was perfectly paired was protective and kindhearted Jonas! It was sweet, it was sexy, and it was fun!
