Next to the lake’s dappled water, a woman lies on her yoga mat, her limbs twisted as if she is trying to crawl away. Her mug of tea steams into the cool air and her lips, still warm, are parted mid-sentence. But she will never speak or see again...
When Sandra Ashville is found murdered in a sleepy town near Oakhurst, Detective Jo Fournier is first at the scene. Jo is shaken by the similarities between herself and the dead assistant District Attorney, a dedicated woman with a heart for justice. And as she examines Sandra’s body, Jo discovers something that chills her to the bone: the bullet hole is covered by an intact blindfold. Why was Sandra only blindfolded after her death?
The very next morning Jo receives a shocking call. A judge has been brutally killed, before she too was blindfolded. Soon it becomes clear that the twisted serial killer is working with a deadly countdown: every morning, another body will be found. Working around the clock, Jo makes an important break-through: all the victims are connected to the same murder trial. And Jo’s dear friend and partner Bob Arnett could be next…
With the next morning rapidly approaching, Jo and her team pull out all the stops to catch the killer. But when she uncovers a stain of corruption that includes Bob, Jo faces an impossible choice. Can she trust her partner, when the evidence suggests he turned a blind eye to a grave miscarriage of justice? And as the body count rises, can Jo catch the killer before it is too late for her oldest friend?
M.M. Chouinard is the USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Amazon Charts bestselling author behind The Vacation, a standalone psychological thriller, and the Detective Jo Fournier series, featuring The Dancing Girls, Taken to the Grave, Her Daughter's Cry, and The Other Mothers. She loves animals, coffee, amateur genealogy, and anything to do with Halloween or the zombie apocalypse.
M.M. Chouinard's first fiction story was published in her local paper when she was eight, and she fell in love with Agatha Christie novels not long after. While pursuing a Ph.D in psychology and helping to found the first U.S. research university of the new millenium, the stories kept rattling around inside her skull, demanding to come out. For sanity's sake, she released them.
If you enjoy a compelling police procedural, M.M. Chouinard's What They Saw checks off all the boxes. Chouinard's writing is exciting and tense in the sixth book in the Detective Jo Fournier series.
Synopsis: After being sent to the scene of a murder, Detective Jo Fournier discovers the victim is someone she knows. As soon as Jo and her team compile a list of suspects, they start crossing them off until only a few remain. Are they on the right track? Can Jo and her partner solve this case before the killer strikes again?
My favorite characters are the main reason I keep returning to this police procedural series. In addition to the protagonist, I also enjoy the supporting cast. Each upcoming installment of the series is eagerly anticipated. Detective Jo Fournier's series is always entertaining, so I recommend it. The feeling is like being at home with family.
What They Saw (Detective Jo Fournier Book 6) by M.M. Chouinard is available November 16th.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this suspenseful book with me. It is always a joy to read M.M. Chouinard's work.
This is utterly compulsive reading. I am becoming a huge fan of this author, and loved this latest outing with Detective Jo Fournier. It can easily be read in one sitting, as I did. The drama surrounding the police case Jo investigates is non stop and keeps you guessing throughout. Chouinard's books are very well researched, and her execution of the plot is just sublime. Loved it.
Fantastic police procedural book. Not very knowledgeable of this author though I have come across the name before. Beautifully written with words that just flowed to bring you directly into the story itself.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Another great read that had me racing through the pages. Jo and Arnett are called out after a woman is found dead in the grounds of her property. She’s been shot but then a blindfold has been put on after the shooting. The woman is known to the team and soon another murder takes place of someone else in law enforcement. Jo and Arnett are unsure who the killer is at first but as the deaths build up they all seem linked to one case from the past. We have chapters from the killer’s perspective but this is a clever crime thriller and one where I didn’t guess who the killer was. A gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
When the body of a woman is discovered one morning in her garden, Jo is disturbed to find its an ADA she has worked with in the past. Is it related to her work as a prosecutor or something from her private life.
When the body of a Judge is found the next morning Jo knows someone is attacking people in the Justice system. Is she on the killer's radar?
A fast paced plot with lots of drama this book will have you hooked from the start. I didn't want to put it down.
This is the first book I've read from this author but it certainly won't be the last.
I highly recommend this book to all crime genre fans.
Detective Jo Fournier’s latest case is that of a District Attorney named Sandra Ashville. One of the first things that is learned is that the victim was blindfolded after she was killed. This is concerning for Jo, especially when just the next day, a judge was killed and she also was blindfolded. Quite naturally, Jo and her team know that a serial killer is suddenly on the loose and with the victims being in law-enforcement there has to be a connection even deeper than that.
Jo becomes aware what that deeper connection is but also discovering that there is corruption going on, and that this could possibly include her partner Bob Arnett, leaves Jo in a fevered race to find answers.
This sixth book in in the fabulous Detective Jo Fournier series by M. M. Chouinard hits the ground running with the tension never once letting up. Jo’s determination comes second to her dedication in this exciting installment. This one-sitting read was utterly impossible to put down. It is with bated breath that I await book seven in this compelling series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
It's quite a momentous day in Detective Jo Fournier's life but, as always, when her phone rings with a new case everything else becomes secondary. Even without seeing the crime scene Jo and partner, Bob Arnett, know this investigation is different, the victim one of their own, callously killed in her own backyard seemingly without reason.
As the prospect of having to go back through years of paperwork stretches before them Jo and Bob are shocked by a second killing just 24 hours later. Now time is of the essence and as their suspect pool shrinks Jo discovers a chilling link between the two victims and someone close to her, who she trusts implicitly; could they also be in danger? With everyone working long hours going back over files and trying to second guess their killer will they make the necessary breakthrough in time or will the next victim be the most distressing so far?
Wow, what can I say? This sixth book in the Detective Josette Fournier series blew me away. It was a page turner from the start and I loved every word. The killings, the reasons for them, and the methods used, added thought-provoking undertones to this brilliant read, and highlighted a surprising legal minefield of inconsistency. At the same time Jo's private and personal affairs showed different sides to her which I enjoyed enormously.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent addition to a very good series and right up amongst my best reads of the year. Highly recommended.
An impressive read following on from the other books in M.M. Chouinard's Detective Jo Fournier series.
In this one, What They Saw, Sandra Ashville, an assistant distict attorney is found murdered, blindfolded after being killed. Detective Josette Fournier and her partner-in-crime, Detective Bob Arnett are called to the scene in the town of Oakhurst and are shocked by a second killing just hours later.
I believe What They Saw would work as a self-contained read although you most likely will want to read the other instalments of the series. For me, Jo makes for a near-perfect main character with her inner strengths and vulnerability. Although not without flaws, she shows empathy and Jo's relentlessness and motivation are admirable. Michelle M. Chouinard’s overall style wowed me once again as did the wonderfully thrilling plot. I really appreciate the author's ability to not only draw me into the chilling story immediately but also keep me enthralled until the very last page. For me, this tale has it all - a plot brimming with mystery, suspense with many twists, characters that are real and believable and a mindblowing ending. Michelle M. Chouinard is one of my favourite authors and I can’t wait to see what's next in this magnificent series.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Detective Jo Fournier is back with another puzziling case to solve. When an ADA is gunned down early one morning and left posed and covered with a blindfold. And she's not the only one. As just days later a retired judge is bludgeoned to death and posed with a blindfold too.
But what could an ADA on the brink of early retirement and a judge already retired possibly have in common? And who could be next?
That is the question Jo and her partner Bob Arnett have to answer and quick. As they face increasing pressure from a boss, who is looking for any excuse to punish them. Especially Jo after her actions on the last case she worked.
Yet, with little to go on and a large pool of suspects. Jo and her team are stuck for answers. That is until a third person is murdered and an old case of Arnetts is brought to the fore.
But, as the murders continue Jo starts to worry their focus is all wrong. And that it's only a matter of time before the killer targets Arnett.
And with plenty of procedural detail, great twists and a killer I didn't expect. This was a very enjoyable read and it's one I would happily recommend to others.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
This is the first Detective Jo Fournier book I have read and looked forward to starting it. Despite it being part of a series, I did not have any problem jumping right into the story or understanding the character relationships. The book was well-written and well-rounded as there were a couple of sub-plots playing in the background of the main story. Jo has a boyfriend Matt who is moving in with her and I have to say I would love to come home to a man who cooks for me and always has a bottle of wine ready. Lucky gal.
I won't say too much here about the overall plot in order not to create a spoiler, but I also enjoyed Ms Chouinard's explanation at the end about why she wanted to address this particular topic and type of investigation. What I learned there was an eye-opener.
Thank you M.M. Chouinard, NetGalley and Harper for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good detective tale.

M.M. Chouinard is the author of the Detective Jo Fournier mystery thrillers and the standalone mystery thriller The Vacation. Her first fiction story was published in her local paper when she was eight, and she fell in love with Agatha Christie novels not long after. While pursuing a Ph.D. in psychology and helping to found the first U.S. research university of the new millenium, the stories kept rattling around inside her skull, demanding to come out. For sanity's sake, she released them.
“But then, nobody ever really thought it would happen to them.”
Just when Jo thought things were settling down, she has a relationship status change and is still trying to support her sister after her husband's affair, but when an ADA is murdered outside her home, Jo and her team are sent to investigate. The scene is unusual, and the evidence is odd. As the details get unraveled, Bob finds himself twisted in the crosshairs, and the race to find the murderer is on.
I finished this book and immediately wanted the next one. This was such an incredibly well-written story. Our favorite detectives are back with the best team to try and solve the case.
I love how much character development we get throughout this series. This is book six with these characters, and we are still seeing them grow. It’s amazing!
I loved the dynamics in this one and how strong the familial bond with the team is. When Bob becomes a potential target, it’s personal. And Jo is not about to stand by while her partner and best friend is hunted but an unknown perp.
This novel dealt with extremely sensitive topics, trigger warnings for SA, and I found the way Michelle presented both sides of this case respectful, sensitive, and empathetic.
I loved how the situations were handled. While the method of revenge was wrong, the reasoning was not. I did not know about the details discussed regarding the fact.
I respect Michelle so much for not staying silent on an issue that should be discussed. And I love that while presenting this issue to Jo, we see that care, compassion, and understanding of why are so important.
Something I love about Jo is her ability to find understanding with people. We saw it with Diana in the last book, and we see it again in this one. The respect, empathy, compassion, and kindness Jo shows are powerful.
This was incredibly fast-paced. The increased pacing was palpable, and you won’t be able to put the book down. This is an intricately presented game of cat and mouse. The hunted and the hunter. It’s about survival, on so many levels.
This was an emotional ride from start to finish. The weight of what was at stake was so clearly delivered, and Michelle is an absolute wordsmith when it comes to bringing scenes to life.
Just when you thought this series, these characters, and this author couldn’t possibly get any better, What They Saw is released. This is Michelle at her strongest, to date, anyway.
Buckle up and hold on because you’re about to take the most intricate and terrifying ride of your life.
A personal note from Katy: I always read books from “cover to cover.” I read every dedication, every acknowledgment, all of it. This was no different. While reading Michelle’s thank you for this novel, I dropped my phone and burst into tears.
Because I was included among the amazingly talented people, Michelle was recognizing. I am so humbled, honored, and grateful to read and review for Michelle. I am so thankful to call her my friend. I love screaming about her books with her, I appreciate her humor, and I think she is the coolest human.
To have her give me space in her book is unreal. And I am so grateful. Thank you, Michelle, for forever connecting me to a world and characters I genuinely love.
What They Saw by M.M. Chouinard is another in the police procedural, part of a series featuring Jo Fournier and Bob Arnett, police detectives. Things are in emotional upheaval for Jo: Matt, her boyfriend has moved in and she has claustrophobia. He has done nothing, it is her. Also, Lt Hayes is holding a grudge about a crime Jo solved without consulting her. She feels the woman’s disdain with every move she makes, not to mention, she threatens to bust her to patrol every chance she gets. Her brother-in-law cheated and got another woman pregnant. Her sister needs support, so does her husband. This a frightening murder: a judge, just months from retirement, shot in the head while doing yoga on her own pier. Her eyes covered post-mortem with a blindfold. Was it her ex-husband? Before they even had a chance to get it all processed, a judge was found murdered, not shot, but otherwise the same. They had both been posed. Jo finally figured out the pose was Lady Justice. What did they have in common? The next morning it was the defense attorney. They had the case figured out and were watching the perpetrator, a rapist who had recently been released from prison. His attorney was screaming harassment and suing them all.
Jo was worried. Bob had been on this case, it was when she was on desk duty as she had broken her leg and he had another partner. Being the excellent detectives they are, they figured out who the murderer was but they had no idea how to catch them. Or how they would murder next. Jo still has a life to live, so do some of the others on the team. It is a hard mix, police work and personal life. This author handles it well, giving the reader an insight into the people investigating this murder. Jo and Bob are a good team and Jo, especially, is a very human character. She is easy to like, from a distance, at least. The mystery is a good one, one I would hope is far-fetched. Sometimes the books I read frighten me and this one does. Great story.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of What They Saw by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #MMChouinard #WhatTheySaw
An assistant district attorney is shot at point blank range while doing yoga. Then a judge is bludgeoned to death in a park. Detective Fournier suspects that the killer is someone with a grudge against the justice system but can she stop them before they strike again? What They Saw is the 6th police procedural and crime thriller book to feature Detective Jo Fournier and her team. Members of the justice system are being killed and it seems that there are more targets. Jo and her team need to frantically uncover potential suspects and their motives in order to catch the killer. The book is written most from Jo's perspective but we contrast this with the killer's viewpoint which ramps up the tension as we see their plans and actions. The death scenes are vivid but not particularly graphic. There is some forensic detail although it is delivered in an objective way. There are plenty of suspects to investigate and all have motive, opportunity or both. Jo begins to fear for members of her own team as she anticipates the next death. The action is quite fast paced as the investigation speeds along and the tension builds. What They Saw is a great addition to the series and I enjoyed the tense investigation.
My apologies in advance for this very confusing review. On one hand, I think this might be my favorite book in the series. Jo is in an uncomfortable position, having her boyfriend Matt finally move in with her. She is questioning the integrity of her long time partner Bob. And she is struggling with her new boss' insecurities. I liked all this! I loved all this! I was ready to give this 5 stars. I really liked the story of the serial killer hunting down members of the legal and law community. It reminded me of a previous book I had read with a similar theme. Then, I realized it was another book in this same series. It felt too similar and I felt cheated. It was almost like the idea was germinated at the same time as the books followed very similar paths. And while I can understand when there are similarities between different series, I was disappointed to find them within the same series. I still like the series. I love how Jo is evolving and still want to read more.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.
This author has the knack of writing thrilling books with strong main characters. As well as the plot itself, I always like getting to know the characters quite well, so that in the course of a series, you find yourself really relating to them. Jo Fournier is a great police officer but she is also a really interesting person away from work. I like her relationship with her work partner, too.
Women are being killed at the rate of one per day, and the race is on to figure out what connects them, in order to find the killer. The fact that all the victims are working in an area of law, in some capacity or another, is disconcerting to say the least. And when Jo figures out that her partner, Bob, is also connected to the women, her heart skips a beat......
Whenever I see that M. M. Chouinard has another book out, it is a no-brainer that I go and read it. You can read this book as a standalone as you like, but why not start at the beginning of the series? Thank me later ;)
This book is about Det Jo Fournier and Det Arnette arriving at a scene of a dead woman who turns out to be a ADA. The woman is killed with a gsw to the head and a blindfold over her eyes. Before the detectives can fully investigate her murder a judge is killed 24 hours later also blindfolded. Det and Jo aren't sure what's going on and how these women are tied together and before they can figure out who is the killer, more bodies drop. This leaves Jo and Arnette in danger of being next..
Review: I made a little mistake and read this without knowing that it was a series and this was book 6! Oops 😬🙊 oh well. Moving on, this was a true and true police drama but it's not cliche. It was very thrilling and a huge mystery. It was every bit gripping and held my attention. Even though I caught this late on book six, I wasn't entirely confused at all. There is some backstory to fill in gaps if you didn't read the full series like myself. The characters were awesome. I liked them. I liked the sass and the smarts. I liked the partnership between Jo and Bob. It was nice seeing they each other's backs. I didn't like Hayes but that was the point. I liked each character and their flaws and their back story. I had no issues with this. No Grammer mistakes, no spelling errors. A really good thrilling cop drama. I loved it. And it wasn't boring or cliche. I didn't even suspect the killer. Nicely written. I might just read the other five books and reread this one 😊
What a emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish!! What They Saw had me up late into the night reading because I just had to find out what the ending was going to be. And, what a ending it was! Detective Jo Fournier gets drawn into murders that are personal to her. People she knows are being killed. But, why???? The story grabs you and doesn’t let you go. I can’t wait to see where the author takes Jo next. M.M. Chouinard is a author that writes fast paced police procedurals. The Detective Jo Fournier series is one of my favorite series, Highly recommended author and series! Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, M.M,. Chouinard, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own. @bookouture @mmchouinard @shortbookthyme
Wow! I thought my Kindle was going to ignite because I was tearing through the pages of this book so quickly! I just had to know how this book would end. An ADA is killed in cold blood in her own backyard which definitely stirs up a hornet's nest, but this nest is getting bigger by the second when 24 hours later a judge is brutally slain as well. Detective Jo Fournier and Detective Bob Arnett know the two murders are related because the killer placed a blindfold on each woman after her death. As they investigate and try to puzzle out why the killer would place a blindfold on the victims, it brings up even more questions including possible corruption within the arms of justice. There is a ruthless killer who seems bent on revenge and this killer is checking off a list of people who are due for this killer's own brand of justice. There is abject fear as to who will be next. This book checkmarks all of the great things that a top notch mystery need in order to be interesting - murder, a vicious killer, possible corruption, enough doubt to question every character and who the killer may be, revenge and raw fear of the unknown. M.M. Chouinard is an excellent author who knows how to write a police procedural that is so full of suspense and mystery that you will not be able to sleep until you finish the book. Sleep is overrated anyway! After reading all of the books in this series, I feel as if I know the characters personally. This book and this entire series are addictive. Just when I think she cannot outdo herself, she blazes a new book right into my heart! Find a comfortable spot when you start because you will not get back up until you finish!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
‘What They Saw’ is Book 6 in M.M. Chouinard’s Detective Jo Fournier series of American police procedurals set in New England. I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition narrated by Kate Handford.
While these novels work fine as standalones, having read three of the previous books allowed me to appreciate the development of its various characters over time.
This continues to be a compelling series as the initial discovery of a posed dead body signals the beginning of a complex case that impacts directly on Jo and her long time work partner, Detective Bob Arnett.
A well plotted and highly engaging police procedural.
In the name if justice a perp is eliminating members Of the justice sector, unjustly. Jo and Arnett are hot on the case, but Jo is getting mixed signals from her long time partner. Is he being entirely truthful with her? And why does she have a stifling feeling about Matt moving in? I slid easily back into my usual position of perching over the shoulders of the detectives as they ground through the clues. I was at a loss for the identity of the perp until it was revealed toward the end. Then I smacked my head as if to say, of course, it was logical. My only excuse for not seeing it is due to my muddled brain this week. I can’t wait to see what unfolds next for Jo in her world. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early copy.
What They Saw by M.M. Chouinard is the six book in the brilliant Detective Jo Fournier series. This series has been a page turner from start to finish. This latest book was fast paced plot with lots of great twists and turns and I loved it.
I highly recommend all of M.M. Chouinard's books they will not disappoint.
Big Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of What They Saw in exchange for a review.
M.M Choinard has captured my attention once again. There are plenty of twists and turns in this book to keep you interested. I found my mind juggling with the killers perspective and understanding the “whys” as well as abiding by the law.I Loved to see all the characters I’ve come to love in this book. Just when you think you know who the killer might be, you read a bit more and realize there is still more to the story. Another great read, I can’t wait til the next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A fast pace ,compelling police procedural that is exciting and tense. This is the sixth book in the Detective Jo Fournier series and I can't wait to see what happened next.
Wonderful! Thrilling, tense, addictive. A gripping and absorbing read packed with twists. Loved it. Absolutely addictive. Very highly recommend this one.
THIS SERIES JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER🥹 Jo and the team have another cracking case!!! Love how the author does a perfect balance of Jo’s personal and professional life I NEED BOOK 7 NOW!!!!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of What They Saw, which is book 6 in the Detective Jo Fournier series. I’m sad that I didn’t discover this series earlier because this book was great! I loved Jo and how her lifestyle change is affecting her life. Now I want to read the previous books to see what she was like and what happened to her before this book. The story was intriguing and I had no idea where it was going until the surprising end. I loved how the chapters were broken into each day of the investigation and gave immediacy to the story. I will be looking forward to reading more books in this series!
