Een simpel verhaal met sterke boodschap

Thema’s: vrede, vriendschap, dierenwelzijn

“Peace comes from giving far more than you take …”

This is such a sweet children's book with a positive message. The text is simple but profound, and highlights ways for young children to spread peace in their lives – “Peace is a hello, a smile, a hug ...” It'd be a wonderful read-aloud for preschool-aged children who are still learning how to work together and share with others.

The artwork is gorgeous and full of colorful, happy animals. The illustration of the school of fish at the center of the book is my favorite and is simply fantastic. The children pictured in the book are diverse, both in skin color and in their abilities. The colors are calming yet vibrant with lots of yellows and blues.

The text flows well and has a soothing cadence. There are some bigger words (“remarkably” comes to mind) that might trip up younger readers attempting to read alone, but nothing that can't be easily explained by an adult. The message is solid and encourages children to spread peace and kindness through their everyday actions, and not just to other people. The children pictured in this book are also kind to animals – there's an adorable illustration of a young girl hugging a rabbit, and another of a child offering a dog a bone.

If you have a young child who is an animal lover and enjoys beautiful pictures and rhymes, they'll most likely adore this book. It's absolutely lovely.

Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for providing me with a copy of this book to review.

This picture book is so gorgeous!

Kudos to the team specially the artist who made the illustrations unbelievably so damn realistic.

I felt like I could pluck the leaves and actually hold the characters!

The colour patterns are solid yet not so bold that they beautifully represent well the concept of peace!

This small picture book teaches about peace - what it means, its various interpretations and its various forms.

Love how simple yet difficult to explain concepts like this are presented so well in this book.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

First off this is a gorgeously illustrated book. Every animal and child jumps off of the page at you. The colors are vibrant and the drawings are simple and sweet, yet also beautifully detailed.

The message of the book is obviously trying to get children to understand about getting along with others as soon as they are old enough to understand. It empowers children by showing that even their small acts have consequences. It states simple things such as ""Peace means we talk to each other directly", "Peace is on purpose. Peace is a choice. Peace lets the smallest of us have a voice." "Peace can begin with a laugh and a wave, and grow into actions remarkably brave".

There are illustrations of children of many skin colors and abilities. The animals as well are very diverse, everything from pandas, zebras, elephants down to the smallest butterfly are beautifully drawn.

This is a beautiful book to add to the library of any child over the age of 3 or 4. Just lovely!

"Peace is a hello, a smile, a hug."

This little book is beautiful. From the words to the illustrations, all I can say is that it's utterly beautiful.

"Peace can begin with a laugh and a wave, and grow into actions remarkable brave."

Without many words it delivers such an important message. I think every kid will love this and every kid should read it.

"Peace is a choice."

I received an electronic ARC from North South Books Inc. through NetGalley.
Beautiful definitions of peace that younger readers will understand. The authors take readers through simple to understand ways that peace affects not only humans but all life on earth. The illustrations are lovely and detailed enough to make readers feel they are part of the scene. Terrific read aloud for early in the school year. I love the simple statement on the back cover, "Peace is a choice." It offers a discussion starting point for readers to share their own thoughts and how they build off the book.

Listened to Baptiste and Miranda Paul’s Peace during an online children’s message as part of a church service I enjoy checking out outside of my own. I was like cool, let me share with my Goodreads folk believing you’d get something outta the story, too.

This was the featured story followed by these two questions:

What is a favorite way the book describes how peace feels?

Why is it your favorite?

These questions remind me of Hailstones and Halibut Bones becoming famous in blind communities because it elaborates on experiences of color in regards to things of similar hues. Such as tree trunks, dirt, and roast beef being brown would provide the listener with a sensation of brown making the color relatable beyond words for those who can't see it.

So many today need similarly when it comes to peace. We need to sense the experience of it. Which answers the first question.

The entire book emboldens how peace feels. In ways, every reader could connect to at least one description. This also answers the second question.

Imma cheat and add a second reason for liking the book 😁

Relatable illustrations with a multiple-page fold-out at the end displaying various peaceful moments.

Bought a copy that should arrive in a week because I like it so much want a copy for the children's section of my shelves.

The simplicity of a child’s view is my adult response to the two questions. Reminds me of a faith belief in regards to being instructed to come as the little children to faith.

This reminds me of Zen Mind Beginners Mind. No matter what it is I approach all things as though I am a beginner and know nothing. There's always more to learn.

It’s okay if you don't believe as I do in regards to faith. One verse “peace, be still” is the theme of my life. Which has definitely shown up in mindfulness practice.

My theme for 2022 involves peace. Happened upon a book title while watching an episode of The Walking Dead where Morgan was suffering PTSD. Who would have thought a book about peace here that's in print?

A hard-bound copy of The Art of Peace just arrived today. It’s out of print so found a great used copy on Abe Books.

The softcover is on the way. In certain cases, I order both. Use one regularly and the other when I'm less inclined to mess it up using it where I can leave it resting safely back on the shelf or table.

If you saw a copy of one of my bibles you’d understand 😁

What I like most about this book, Peace, is everyone regardless of age can find one aspect they relate to and one to aspire to on a deeper level in the story which can overflow through us to others.

David Meltzer said to me, “Everything through me for everyone”.

Ask yourself, “what flows through me for everyone?”

Then, “is what’s flowing through me what I want for myself and others?”

Followed by, “what do I want to flow through me for the world?”

“So be it! See to it!” ~ Octavia Butler

“Peace is on purpose. Peace is a choice. Peace lets the smallest of us have a voice.”

In their newest picture book, award-winning author-duo Baptiste Paul and Miranda Paul explore the many powerful forms and effects of peace. From pronouncing a friend’s name correctly to giving more than we take, peace is made up of innumerable actions both big and small, bold and quiet; because peace isn’t just about “getting along” but fostering the connections between us with kindness, empathy, and action. Rather than being a passive state, peace is an active decision, one that not only impacts the world around us but has the potential to bring us all closer together.

By the time readers finish this tender story, they will no doubt flip back to the beginning and start again, simply to re-experience the inspiring text and magical visuals. Lyrical rhyme pulls readers from page to page with soothing rhythm, making Peace perfect to read aloud. Estelí Meza’s colorful illustrations bring vibrant life to every moment, depicting comforting scenes of children interacting with animals from around the world. As explained in an author’s note at the end, studies have shown how violent human conflict influences our environment; thus, in pursuing peace, we can also protect and preserve nature and its animal inhabitants. All in all, Peace is sure to be a well-loved tale in countless households for years to come.

Peace is also available in Spanish and German translations.

Peace by Baptiste and Miranda Paul is a wonderful book that is truly a feast for the eyes, ears and heart. Esteli Meza's richly colored illustrations of children, animals and the natural world are a perfect backdrop to a beautiful reflection on peace and its meaning to us all. A multilingual tree of peace, along with a white dove, introduce the reader to the theme of the book. The simple verses are thoughtful and bring the illustrations to life. I believe this book will be enjoyed by children and adults alike, with much to observe, reflect upon and discuss.
Thank you to Netgalley, the authors and NorthSouth Books for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review. I will definitely be recommending this to our library staff and patrons and look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren.

This gentle, reassuring picture book talks about the importance of peace, and the illustrations show children of different races and animal species interacting together. The author's note at the end emphasizes that even though we usually think of peace in terms of people living together in harmony, peace also creates safety for animals and the environment, while war causes destruction to everything.

Some people might find this book too preachy or simplistic for their tastes, but it can be a good conversation-started with kids, and the illustrations are interesting enough to hold their attention. I especially liked the pandas, and if I were reading this with a child, I would encourage them to identify different species throughout the book, or talk about what they think peace means.

The strange and sometimes frightening illustrations don’t seem to depict the peaceable kingdom that the poetical text describes. The Author’s Note is also an odd addition, intended for an adult audience with references to “recent studies” and the war in Mozambique. “Combined with conservation efforts,” the authors note, “peace allows animals to thrive in areas once ravaged by war.” Perhaps this is the story that they had intended to write?

This book focuses on the concept of peace, exploring how/what actions can foster and manifest it into action. The book is written with gentle rhyme. Moreover, I appreciate how this book utilises the gorgeous illustrations well, painting soft and calming pictures evoking a gentle warmth that complements the narrative well.

Overall, ‘Peace’ is a thought-provoking book that revolves around compassion, self-care, and empathy. This book may serve as a great conversation starter for little ones regarding peace (the author’s note left me food for thought). I’d recommend this book to read to the little ones’ prior bed.

The illustrations are super cute and the message is really percise and well put as this book is designed for young children, it takes the metaphors from their daily life.
The message at the end about the Mozambique war is really important!

A beautiful and moving book about how peace is more than simply quiet or calm, but is instead an action and a choice! An author's note at the back of the book provides further information about how war affected the wildlife of Mozambique, and how peace is healthy for both humans and the planet we live in.

Peace explores the many definitions of peace and all the small steps we can take to help bring peace to ourselves, our communities, and the world. From pronouncing our friends name correctly to saying “I’m sorry”, our small actions can have a huge impact.

I really appreciate the authors’ message that our inner peace reflects back out into the world and can affect others, including animals and the earth. As someone who is often overwhelmed by the idea of peace and how to bring it to the world, this message really resonated with me and reminded me that I have to start with myself.

I love the illustrations by Estelí Meza, especially all the different animals included. There is also a really fun foldout spread on the last page, which was a lovely surprise.

I want to thank North South Books for generously sending me a review copy of Peace. I’m so happy to be able to share such a lovely book with you all.

PEACE - The title says it all.

This wonderfully illustrated children's book is written by the husband and wife social justice team of Baptiste and Miranda Paul.

Peace is defined in simple terms that any child will be able to apply to their own lives.

The authors encourage children to demonstrate and seek peace through their own actions. For instance: kids are prompted to be polite and respectful. They are told that peace is giving more than they take which is a mantra that adults and children alike should strive to achieve.

The whimsical illustrations are beautiful and exquisite. Bold colors are liberally used to draw the eye across the pages. Each two-page spread is so fantastic they are worthy of being framed and hung in a child's bedroom or playroom.

I am rating PEACE as 5 OUT OF 5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and I hope to see copies of this book in houses, libraries and schools around the world.

At the same time as the English language version is being published, so to are the Spanish and German versions.

Peace

Just the sound of the word evokes a gentle kiss, a sigh, a warm feeling.

This new picture book, written by Baptiste Paul and Miranda Paul and illustrated by Esteli Meza, introduces peace to young children. This is not a task these book creators take lightly, but they do so gently and with great success.

Each page offers examples of how a child can engage with others and it all starts with a hello, a smile, a hug. Young readers will be bathed in flowing phrases. They will feel the peace of sharing, reciprocating, listening, and even apologizing. They will feel the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves and they will understand, after reading this book, that peace is an activity and a choice; not just a feeling.

The quiet tone of each tiny rhyming verse extends into the soft colors of Meza’s delightful child-focused illustrations. Whether it’s a friendly wave, direct eye contact or the offering of a gift, children will delight in discovering the affirming gestures shown on every page. And once you reach the end of the book they will surely linger on your lap and browse the joyful interactions shown on the fold-out pages.

It’s a book I will enjoy reading to the little ones in my life.

Thank you Lydia Lukidis, from whom I won this beautiful book in a Twitter contest.

Peace by Baptise Paul and Miranda Paul illustrated by Esteli Meza

Peace is a pillow that softens our sleep

The illustrations in this book are stunning, wonderful skies and backdrops with detailed pictures of children and adults practicing peaceful living, they give this book a lovely calm and serene feel.

This book addresses what’s needed in the world to ensure a kind, compassionate and cooperative existence for all species living alongside each other.

Rather than address the topic of world peace, it addresses the subtle acts and shifts in thinking needed by each individual to live a peaceful existence. It’s all about reducing conflicts, personal and interpersonal, and between species. It’s about finding the plants we can experience inner peace. It’s about being brave and standing up to events that could disturb peace.
This is a beautiful book to share with children and holds important messages for adults too. There are so many opportunities to talk around the text. This would be a great book for sharing in schools as part of circle times or PSHE as well as being a wonderful book for families to treasure, read and practice.
Truly a children’s book that helps promote a better world.

It is not only people who respond to compassion. Humans with animal companions, veterinarians who heal and care for them, and scientists who study them usually agree the response from animals approached and treated with kindness is favorable. In fact, there is evidence some animals experience a varied range of emotions. (Animal Emotions: Exploring Passionate Natures: Current interdisciplinary research provide compelling evidence that many animals experience such emotions as joy, fear, love, despair, and grief---we are not alone by Marc Bekoff, BioScience, Volume 50, Issue 10, October 2000) An act of compassion or harmony does not need to be a grand gesture. It can be as simple as a glance filled with warmth and affection.

Out in early March, Baptiste Paul and Miranda Paul write a hope-filled and rhyming poem/message that defines "Peace". It can be a wide range of things from a "hello or a hug" and "pronouncing your friend's name correctly". With brief but profound actions, we all may be able to find and achieve "Peace". I especially loved "Peace is on purpose./Peace is a choice./Peace lets the smallest of us/have a voice." With double-page gorgeous and colorful illustrations (even one fold-out!), Esteli Meza shows a myriad of scenes with a myriad of diverse people and animals making peaceful choices. An afterword from the authors speaks of the importance of peace and how the absence of it, the effects of war and violence in a country harms every living thing, not only people. They tell that after a war in Mozambique, not only did people lose their lives or were forced to flee, 90% of the wildlife was lost. Recovery is happening in Gorongosa National Park, a piece of hope! Illustrations have included some of those animals found today, but they are not named. It is a book that will be lovely to share.

This vibrantly illustrated picture book features minimal rhymed verses that urge young readers to view themselves with agency and impact on the people in their lives, and the wider world as well. There's no denying the appeal of diverse kids engaging with each other, with animals of many kinds, and with a lush environment that feels like paradise. With a single page of back matter, the authors expand the main text premise with a concrete example of the devastating impact of war on wildlife and habitats. They provide hope with the truth about ways that species can recover from the brink of such devastation when war is avoided and people work together.
It is a very welcome concept to introduce kids to the idea that "peace on Earth" is all well and good as a wish, but it take specific and intentional choices and actions to bring a peaceful attitude to a combative situation. Peace does not mean the absence of war, it means individuals who act responsibly and intentionally, not react impulsively.
This is also available in Spanish and other languages.

Beautifully illustrated book explaining the ways children can create peace. The illustrations feature rounded lines and no black outlines. This gives the book a soft, playful feel, almost like a nursery.

The book features children of all ethnicities and animals that are the symbols of peace around the world. The language includes things like talking to others directly and pronouncing names correctly. Great tools for young readers to understand peaceful conflict resolution and kindness.

The authors’ notes at the back about their native country of Mozambique and the impact of war on the local animal population were thought-provoking. The illustrator is an award winning artist from Mexico. This could spark discussion among young readers about people from different countries working together peacefully to write the book.

I feel as though I want to climb in and join the beautifully illustrated animals and children in their discovery of peace. Everyone has a different idea of what “peace” means to them. Every human is different, but we all have the ability to bring happiness and joy to someone in need of it- so why don’t we? This book brings to life a subtle calmness that even I as an adult enjoyed and continue to keep sharing it with my nieces and nephews when they come to visit.
Peace is about respecting one another and learning from each other’s differences to make a better world. I definitely will be sharing Baptist’s and Miranda’s works with my future children. It is nice to finally discover a piece of writing that helps children (and sometimes reminds adults!) that we need to be better. In a world of TV and noise- Peace is the quiet, reassuring, book I feel as though needs to be heard, shared, and treasured.

With stylised illustrations and rhyming text, this book does a great job of teaching kids about what peace - and keeping the peace - actually involves.

Hence, it is not only a cute and user-friendly tool, it is also extremely important. Because the younger that children are when they learn about the importance of being kind and contributing to the creation of a peaceful environment, the better things will be for everyone.

There were 2 things about the book that I particularly liked. The first was the stress on the importance of learning to pronounce your friend's name properly, which speaks to the respect for other cultures in our increasingly global world.

The second was the need to have an understanding of what conflict does to other creatures with whom we share our planet. This is a terrific book to share with young children.

This rhyming picture book explores the concept of peace through all the small actions children can take to work toward it. There's lovely art and a real feeling of comfort and accessibility.

The only thing I find a bit confusing is the authors' note at the end, which focuses on peace and its effect on wildlife. The main text of the picture book doesn't talk about that at all (although the art features many wild creatures). So that felt like a bit of a disconnect to me, like an authors' note that belonged at the end of a different book.

Still, in these divisive times, this book offers kids concrete ways to take steps toward peace, and it also paints the concept of peace in words that make me want it: "Peace is a pillow that softens our sleep." Beautiful!

I'm teaching HIST217 right now - a geography course - and a lot of the students in there are elementary education majors. One of my weekly assignments is to get a children's picture book on the region we're studying. (Either the setting, the author, or the illustrator have to be from there.)

Teaching geography for so long at the junior high and high school level it was evident that it was often overlooked in the elementary schools as the NCLB and Race to the Top mandates focused (nearly exclusively) on reading and maths.

So, I thought this might be a fun way to teach geography to people who will be teaching geography to the wee ones. That there are lots of ways we can teach multiple things at the same time and make them interesting and relevant, and dare I say fun?

I dare not. The course is in its second week.
