Corinna Bechko has been writing comics since her horror graphic novel Heathentown was published by Image/Shadowline in 2009. Since then she worked for Marvel, DC, Boom!, Image, and Dark Horse, among others, on titles such as Planet of the Apes, Star Wars: Legacy, Savage Hulk, Aliens/Vampirella, Invisible Republic, and Green Lantern: Earth One. She was recently short-listed for the Aeon Award for her prose short Sooterkin. She is a zoologist by training.

In the first Avatar film, there are only small bits shown on Dr. Grace Augustine’s (Sigourney Weaver) benign intentions and work with the Na’Vi people. Bits that triggered much curiosity for more backstory. “Adapt or Die” is a legitimate prequel story that centers around Augustine and Omatikaya elder Mo’At, Neytiri’s mother. Both of them display a wonderfully open approach to the exchange of knowledge and wisdom for mutual benefit and both are confronted with their own forms of resistance coming from their respective following. A health crisis arises, that puts relations and trust to the test.

Once again, as a reader you don’t exactly feel any sense of pride to be part of the “sky people”, with their solely economic motives, disregard for the lives of other folk and outright arrogance. With all of her smirking frustration, Augustine knows she simply has to ride this train to be able to do this work and live the life she wants. A heroin of science without a doubt.

“Adapt or Die” is a refreshing tale, once again beautifully made, that handles it’s issues with a sense of higher developed reason, in stead of the usual fight picking and macho bravado. More female leadership in the world, is what the story also appears to suggest. Judging from this, that would’nt look bad at all.

Art/Book cover: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Compared to the art inside the book, the cover art, in my opinion, is not Mark's best work. However, the combined effort of himself, Beni and Wes the inside (the graphic novel itself) is beyond perfect, even the first few pages I'm just taken away to another place.

Writing/Plot: ⭐⭐⭐
The story/plot was a pretty simple and overdone idea of humans ruining other planets like we ruin our own. I found that a little disappointing. However, it's realistic whether I like it or not. Humans would and have made mistakes like the one in this plot/graphic novel.

My favourite character is still the good doctor Grave. I'm always going to be a fan of Sigourney Weaver's characters so it's unsurprising.

I learned that some cures can come from things that are usually poisonous. It all depends on how they're used. It's kind of like politics.

The readability was fantastic and a young child all the way up to old nana will have no trouble keeping up.

I would recommend this book, but I probably wouldn't read it again unless I was proper bored.

This complete story arc takes place many years before the events of the movie Avatar. Neytiri is a child and her parents are trying to navigate the tricky relationship with the newly arrived humans. We follow Grace (Sigourney Weaver's human scientist) as she attempts to bridge the cultures and create a situation of mutual reciprocation of knowledge.

Story: Hell's Gate has just been established and a team of scientists lead by Grace Augustine are using lab grown avatars to move in the world of Pandora and interact with the Na'Vi. Grace tentative approaches the Na'Vi elders about starting a school to teach their young about the 'Sky People. ' But there is still worry, concern, and a wary caution about any interactions. Then the youth are stricken with a strange fever after a visit to the human compound. Na'Vi leader Mo'at (Neytiri's mother) must work with Grace to find out how to cure the children before it is too late.

The story was interesting and flowed well. There were a few clichés, of course. And I have a hard time respecting a scientist or elder who would willfully break a quarantine and bring in infected individuals without truly knowing what they are doing with in terms of a pathogen. There is a lot of disobeying authority on both sides and the humans come off as the usual mindless and narcissistic drones who think only of themselves - while the Na'Vi fall into the 'noble savage' trope just a bit too often. I am relieved, though, that we don't have the humans saving the 'savages'.

That said, it is a decent story that makes decent use of the lore built in the movie. It was good to see Sigourney Weaver's character in more of a starring role and events in this graphic novel do set up what will happen in the future with the events of the first movie. The illustration work is clean, very detailed, and well done. The Avatar world is well depicted and for a comic, there is a solid likeness for Sigourney Weaver's character. There are some panels that are very stiff and the action tends to be very narrowly focused in the drawings (I would have liked more detailed scenic pull backs). But I especially appreciated how the old and new Avatar Na'Vi were drawn. The art really is clean and easy to follow.

In all, a solid story and a decent prequel to the movie. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Mildly interesting. The novel takes place just before Grace forms her school. The interactions between each character show foundations of future relationships. The trust shown between Mo’at and Grace, the discord between Parker and Grace, and so on.

I noticed Parker has a lot in common with Eytukan. All the distrust, how they each regard the other’s species, is remarkably similar.

I’d have liked to see Quartich at this early stage, but sadly he arrived a decade or so later—when tensions were already high. I wonder how things might have changed if he’d met any Na’vi while they were on friendly(ish) terms rather than when the fighting had broken out. They’ve only ever been enemies, whereas Jake got the chance to meet them on their own terms and learn directly.

In every version of Pandora’s story, 90% of humans are depicted at their worst. Greedy, thoughtless monsters. But we’re all the same in the end, each capable of kindness and horror in turn.

It's ok, I guess.

I liked Mo'at and Eytukan's interaction, the point of view of each one as the Tsahìk and as the Olo'eyktan, and how they both think different what is best for the clan.

Parker Selfridge is just a very annoying character here, he seems too much a cartoon villain. Grace's insubordination is also too much here, like she is an all-know who is always right. I don't know, her rebellion for a noble cause seems more like arrogance and misdirected pride, so she was also annoying (and I love Grace in the movie!)

I don't know why, but I found it amusing that basically, at the end, the Na'vi kids were sort of vaccinated. LOL

Eine weiterer Prequel Comic zu "Avatar -Aufbruch nach Pandora", das eine wichtige Nebenfigur zum Hauptcharakter macht: Dr. Grace Augustine. Jahre vor den Ereignissen des Filmes muss Grace den Omatikaya dabei helfen, ein Gegengift zu finden, denn ein Gift befällt insbesondere deren Kinder. Gemeinsam mit der Tsahik Mo'at, die wir auch aus den Filmen kennen, macht sich Grace auf die Suche. Herrliche Geschichte um die Zusammenarbeit von Grace und Mo'at, die auch jede auf ihre eigene Art und Weise versuchen, das Problem zu lösen.

I have always loved Avatar but I have never had access to the comics until down with going to a new library and finding their extremely extensive catalog of ebooks, including Darkhorse. (the company that publishes the Avatar Comics) I really enjoyed this issue, mainly because we get to see more of Mo’at and how she and Grace knew each other before the events of the first film. I can honestly say I am very excited to read more of the comics.

I really liked how this showed how the events are set up before Jake Sully gets to Pandora. However, Grace and Omatikaya's comradery seems far too easy in this book, I know Grace eventually helps find the cause and helps with the solution. However, if this is before the school is created, I fail to see how this history would ever lead to the school being built. Also, I know it's real but every time Grace has to go out of her way to defend her work, and making ethical decision it's super demoralizing. Also, I have to say once again that this art style is not well suited for the Na'vi, but I think this book has done the best out of the comics so far. Finally, I hate Neytiri in this book, it feels like she was only put in the book to have a character that the reader can relate to without having to put in the work to do so.

Decent art. You see the conclusion a mile away, though the real draw here is the expansion of the lore and the deep dive into Mo'at's character.

That a tiny bit of toxin could destabilize the environment is just a bad idea. They wouldn't need guns to clear hometree, they could dump their garbage, close their doors and see the Na'vi die en masse. This is not what happens in the movies, and the second movie wouldn't work if this was the case.

The interactions between Mo'at and Eytukan as Tsahìk and Olo'eyktan are enjoyable, offering different perspectives for the clan. However, Parker Selfridge comes across as an overly annoying cartoon villain, and Grace's insubordination feels more like arrogance than noble rebellion, which detracts from her likability. The ending's humorous twist of the Na'vi kids being "vaccinated" was amusing.

I didn't know this was part of a series and just picked this up randomly as it looked interesting. The story was intriguing and the art lovely. Fine to read as a standalone if you have only watched the first movie.

This comic prequel to the 2008 James Cameron’s is just OK… The book is basically its own thing and does not really add any depth to the movie. No big twist and the plot is bit too obvious.
