Promising Young Woman meets High Fidelity in the dark and twisty new thriller from the bestselling author of The Sunday Girl, The Strangers We Know and The Paris Affair.
A bad day at work. A drunken night. A rogue Instagram follow. That’s all it takes to ruin a life …
The question is, whose life will be ruined? When Billie wakes up in a strange guy’s bed, her first thought what happened last night? She can't even remember meeting him. And how the hell did she get to Coney Island?
Then reality bites and the memories flood in – the reason she was in that bar, drinking to start today she's going to get fired. Because yesterday her law firm lost a big Samuel Grange v Jane Delaney. And it looked like it was her fault.
It wasn't. Yet now Samuel Grange is free to drive off into the sunset in his stupid Porsche and do it all again to another woman. And all Billie can think What about the next girl? And the one after that? But there is nothing she can do to stop him.
Unless ... She could expose the truth about him on her own. Then everyone would see what he was really like. And he wouldn't be able to do it again.
The problem is, the only way to protect the next girl is to become the next girl. And, well, that could be a little risky ... even deadly.

Well this was a surprise! With most thrillers I can usually predict a few scenarios and culprits and not be too far from the mark, but this one !!!! The twists to the story just kept coming, about midway through I just let go and let the plot take me where it wanted to go. I couldn't anticipate anything, which makes this book quite special. I will most definitely be trying Pip Drysdale's other novels.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this for an honest review.
I am such a big fan of Pip Drysdale’s thrillers and I was dying to get my hands on The Next Girl. So when I did, there was no waiting, I dove straight in. If I hadn’t been so tired, I would have read it in sitting. As it was, it was 2. I was hooked from the very beginning, and I couldn’t wait to find out how it was going to finish.
Our main character Billie is a hot mess. And not just because, as the book opens, she wakes up in a strangers bed, with little recollection of how she got there or who he is. We soon find out that Billie has a lot going on that she keeps hidden from the world. But the night before, she was drowning her sorrows and her life is about to go from bad to worse.
I really don’t want to say too much about the plot as it is best to go in fairly blind. I will say that it will have you turning those pages needing more. If you have read Pips books before, you will know that things are not always as they seem, and it is pointless trying to figure things out. Just go with it and be surprised.
I loved the addition of all the musical references throughout the story, and the QR code at the end to get the playlist. The Next Girl is set in New York and it made me want to go there even more than I already do. One day.
So, in short, I loved Billie, I wanted her to win, and you have to read this book. Publishes in Australia on November 30th, I have pre ordered my physical copy for my shelf. Thank you Simon and Schuster for my advanced copy to read.
This thriller had my heart thumping and was very hard to put down. Told in the first person by Billie, who has just lost her paralegal job, it’s a fast paced and well plotted read. The tone is young and full of music references (her mother was a singer), with lots of reveals of past events at just the right time to explain what Billie has been doing to get justice (basically she trawls social media and the internet to find incriminating stuff that then makes it impossible for the particular target to evade the law that they’ve been able to do beforehand, so she’s a kind of a nonviolent vigilante). Billie has all these skills that I have no idea about, how to get passwords, burner phones, tracking devices, administrator powers on other peoples laptops etc, VPNs, and all that stuff just makes me glad I’m old and not really into social media etc, there’s really a lot of nasty types out there (well so it seems after reading this book!). My second book by this author and another good read!
A bad day at work. A drunken night. A rogue Instagram follow. That's all it takes to ruin a life... the question is, whose life will be ruined? When Billie wakes up in a strange guy's bed, she has no idea where she is or how she got there. Then she remembers that today she's going to get fired because her law firm lost a big case against Samuel Grange and it looks like it's her fault. It wasn't, but now Grange is free to live his wealthy life and do it all again to another woman. Billie could expose the truth about him on her own but the problem is the only way to protect the next girl is to become the next girl. And that could be risky... even deadly...
Look, there's a reason that this author is one of my favourites. I know I can rely on her for a bloody great read. This one is no exception, well and truly pulling me out of a slight reading slump. Fun fact, there's also a Spotify playlist for this novel that includes music mentioned which is pretty cool. Billie is my favourite kind of vigilante lead in a thriller - yes she does things that are technically illegal but hey, pretty sure those people deserve it so I'm okay with it, you go girl. An absolutely engaging and entertaining read, I enjoyed every moment of it. Overall: highly recommend this thriller, it'll end up being one of my top reads for the year.
https://theburgeoningbookshelf.blogsp... With her release of The Next Girl, Pip Drysdale has delivered an adrenaline fueled story with themes of toxic masculinity, online bullying and revenge versus justice.
Billie had always wanted to work in the justice system working her way to become a lawyer. She relished her job as a paralegal, helping attain justice for victims of crime. When her latest case goes terribly wrong, her client's abuser is acquitted and Billie loses her job. Billie decides to avenge the victim by exposing the man for what he really is and to do this she must become, his next girl. The main character was so stressy and hyper I found it hard to settle into the story as she was racing from one thing to the next.
The Next Girl is a vigilante style story with lots of mysteries running through it and I found the not knowing, rather than drawing me in, was confusing at times.
The Next Girl is timely and compelling. I did enjoy the story, it just isn't my favourite by Pip Drysdale. *I received my copy from the Beauty & Lace Book Club
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication date: May 4, 2023
Billie is a paralegal, living a perfectly normal life in New York City. But Billie also has a secret- she knows how to get revenge. For years, Billie has used her legal connections to go after the people who have done wrong, and gotten away with it. From abusers, to drunk drivers, to Internet trollers, Billie finds them, stalks them and does what she can to ruin their lives. When Billie gets fired after being blamed for losing a high profile case, she has nothing to lose. She knows that she is innocent, and she will go after the guilty. Whatever the cost.
Pip Drysdale’s, “The Next Girl” has some definite “The Flight Attendant” vibes, mixed with vigilante justice and Internet sleuthing. Right from the beginning nothing and no one is what they seem, and Drysdale takes you down the rabbit hole with Billie, as she searches for answers.
If nothing else, “Girl” will give you lots of tips on how to cyber stalk people, including how to get into their email and social accounts, which is not only informative but it also made me want to delete all of my electronic information and go hole up somewhere in the wilderness. Billie seems more knowledgeable in this area than the average person, but I was able to gain some knowledge during her travails, which is always a plus for me.
The story is told by Billie, but she narrates it as if she is telling a story, addressing the reader on many occasions. Billie’s life is told to us through Billie’s eyes, making readers root for her even more. The ending is expected but enjoyable, and Drydale ties up all of her loose ends, leaving behind an immense satisfaction when the final page is turned.
There are a lot of characters in this novel, and many of them play a direct part in Billie’s story, so it can be a bit complicated if you aren’t paying attention. But with Drysdale’s writing, that won’t be a problem as “Girl” will grab you from page one.
Waking up in a stranger's bed is never a good way to start the day as Billie is about to discover especially when she can’t remember how she got there. Then when her mind begins to clear a little she starts to remember why she was in the bar the previous night it was because the law firm that she worked for had lost a big case and it was her fault or was it?
The Next Girl by Aussie author Pip Drysdale was an intriguing read surrounded by mystery and suspense which I enjoyed, but I must admit it wasn’t my favourite book by this author. In saying that I would certainly still recommend it to anyone who likes to read these genres. With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my digital copy to read and review. Recommended.
‘Because the only way for me to protect the next girl is if I am the next girl.’
Musician, actress and author Pip Drysdale burst on the domestic noir scene with her smash hit debut, The Sunday Girl. Now her third novel is being developed for television. In the meantime, before we see our first Pip Drysdale novel on the big screen, we have The Next Girl. A story with incredible drive and plenty of dark mystery elements, I enjoyed being taken on a high powered spin with Pip Drysdale.
The Next Girl follows Billie, a messed-up woman, or so it seems when we first meet her. Billie has woken up on possibly the worst twenty-four hours of her life. She finds herself in bed with a man she doesn’t recognise and she doesn’t know how she got to Coney Island. As Billie slowly receives little fragments of information about her broken life, she realises that she was fired in the wake of a huge court case loss. Now the man charged has escaped any kind of retribution, so now Billie fears that he will strike again. Billie takes matters into her own hands and will stop at nothing to take down the man in question, Samuel Grange. But it is a dangerous undertaking, Billie will have to become the very girl she fears and his next victim. Will Billie survive this reckless pursuit of justice?
Pip Drysdale’s name has been on my priority list since I read her first novel The Sunday Girl. I have since continued my Pip Drysdale affair with her subsequent releases, The Strangers We Know and The Paris Affair. I was counting on Drysdale’s latest to be yet another compulsive read and I was right!
I’m always left a little breathless after reading a Pip Drysdale novel and this new one was no exception. The Next Girl definitely got my heart racing more than few times and I felt a little giddy by the end. The opening was a killer, it really pulled me in right into the action and I was keen to see how it would all pan out for Billie. I loved the original set up of this one and the rest of the story was filled with plenty of thrills. The plot zips along at such a fast rate that you hardly notice that you haven’t left your reading spot. I know I was dying to stay up to finish The Next Girl, but my eyes failed me and I had to give in to sleep. Drysdale’s fourth release is relentless as always, filled with psychological foolery and even some tech savvy parts that might have just gone over my head in some areas. Billie is a suspect narrator and her background made her version of events quite untrustworthy. Billie was also a bit of a mess but driven at the same time! However, you still really want Billie to triumph as her reasons for continuing her pursuit of justice in such a dangerous manner is honourable. The Next Girl will undoubtedly keep you hooked until the end. I apologise for providing such a scant review, but I think less is more in this case!
The Next Girl is Pip Drysdale at her optimum. Risky, tension filled, addictive and daring. An inevitable hit this summer, pick up a copy today!
*I wish to thank Simon & Schuster Australia for providing me with a free copy of this book for review purposes.
- Hot mess FMC’s - unreliable narrators - short chapters
This was a nice, fast paced domestic thriller. Billie caught me by surprise, and there were times she had my adrenaline rushing.
Things that held me back:
- this was a personal one and wasn’t the book’s fault. But on the same note, I feel it’s important (at least on the publisher’s part) to include trigger/content warnings. Grief is a reoccurring theme and one that deeply affects me and triggers me in a very negative way. As it is something I am living with in my waking life. I nearly DNF’d this one, but was invested and wanted to see how it ended. So I skimmed through certain bits.
- even though this was fast paced, there were also parts that slowed the story down (in my own opinion) and kinda didn’t need to be there cause it didn’t really add anything to the story.
- I also felt like things kinda fell into place a little too conveniently.
Overall, it was a quick read and one that I liked. A less pickier reader will love it.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Grief, rape, sexual assault, alcoholism, drugs, death of a parent
Thank you Simon & Schuster Canada for gifting me an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest opinion. All reviews are my own
When Billie wakes up in a strange guy’s bed, her first thought is: what happened last night? She can't even remember meeting him.
The memories come rushing back to Billie - the reason she was in that bar, drinking to start with: today she's going to get fired. Because yesterday her law firm lost a big case: Samuel Grange v Jane Delaney. And it looked like it was her fault.
It wasn't. Yet now Samuel Grange is free to drive off into the sunset in his stupid Porsche and do it all again to another woman. And all Billie can think is: What about the next girl? And the one after that? But there is nothing she can do to stop him.
The only way to protect the next girl is to become the next girl.
I enjoyed this one it was a fun read, if you have read Pip's previous books I think you will enjoy this one
Another addictive read by the author with plenty of surprises!
A bad day at work leads to a drunken night and the next day Billie wakes up in a strangers bed. She can't remember a thing. Her day only goes from bad to worse when her firm loses a big legal case because of her and Billie sets out to right some wrongs. But the only way to do that is to meet this predatory man and become the next girl, putting her own life in danger.
The authors characters are always so unique. A little damaged and always fierce, they keep you turning the pages until late into the night. I loved the backstory flowing through this and while I had a feeling about some of the supporting characters, I didn't guess the direction this one was taking in the end. Another fast moving and suspenseful novel.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Australia for this gifted review copy.
‘Because the only way for me to protect the next girl is if I am the next girl.’
The Next Girl is a standalone psychological thriller by bestselling Australian author, Pip Drysdale and I was so excited to finally sample her writing. All up I found an intelligent and interesting plot, with strong characters written in a most conducive way - this book kept me on the edge of my reading seat!
I liked Billie - complex and flawed - characteristics that make her totally believable. The story unfolds with her speaking to the reader which, to me, really hits the mark - it felt like reading her personal diary. Interspersed throughout is the crucial backstory where the reader learns about a past that helps make total sense of current unfolding events. I was hooked from the very beginning and eagerly turned the pages to find answers.
‘I'm not sure how many more lies I have in me.’
This is a book that is fast paced and completely engaging as it is overflowing with suspense. The details are spot on, especially concerning the technology references which I loved. A domestic thriller that will hook you in and keep you guessing until you have all the puzzle pieces to complete the picture.
‘I always thought that if I ever got caught for doing what I do, there would be some glory in it. That people would understand why. They might even applaud it.’
The suspenseful atmosphere Pip creates with twists and turns and both snappy sentences and short chapters were all impactful. This is a book that is sure to appeal to many. With the classic ‘whodunnit’ flavoured with many other serious and heavier themes including sexual violence, vengenance and revenge, coercion and control. This fast paced thriller with stalker vibes, several suspicious characters and a murder mystery is a read that completely drew me in.
‘When I tell people I was drawn to working in the law because 'I wanted to help’, they always look at me like I'm a silly little girl with too much faith in the system. Like the world has some nasty surprises in store for me. But I’ve already had those nasty surprises; my way of helping isn't what they think it is.’
This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. The quoted material may have changed in the final release.
The Next Girl is an intense, edgy thriller that takes you into the life of Billie Spencer-Tate, a young paralegal with a knack for losing her day job, who after losing her mother to suicide due to an online troll, spends the majority of her time and effort using her high-tech knowledge and social media skills to hunt down, identify, select, and hand out her own style of justice to those men who abuse, prey, and gaslight women, with her latest target being the arrogant, despicable, dangerous Dr. Samuel Grange who she is determined to expose.
The prose is taut and gritty. The characters are consumed, unpredictable, and secretive. And the plot builds quickly as it twists, turns, shocks, surprises, and unravels all the personalities, behaviours, relationships, and motivations within it.
Overall, The Next Girl, at its core, is a novel about secrets, manipulation, friendship, coercion, obsession, control, cunning behaviour, tragedy, violence, and vengeance. It’s a highly suspenseful, exceptionally clever tale by Drysdale that highlights everything is not always as it appears and is definitely one of the most gripping page-turners I’ve been lucky enough to read this year.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Next Girl is a standalone psychological thriller by bestselling Australian author, Pip Drysdale. The bold compelling cover drew me in to pick up this exciting and unique mystery story. The style of the book has the main character talking directly to the reader. I rather enjoyed this different style of narrative and it make me continually wondering about whether what Billie is telling us is the whole truth and her careful timing in what to reveal and when to the reader. I loved Billie as a character. She had depth and some morally grey motivations and behaviours. What I didn’t love overall was the mystery which felt a little all over the place. Its hard to say more without spoilers but it felt like the story was leading in one direction but then kind of went in a different direction. The author pulls all the loose ends together and ties everything up with no cliffhangers. I liked the writing style and found the book easy to read, engaging and made me want to keep reading. Overall, I’d highly recommend and I will be looking for future releases by this author. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an arc.
Billie has had an awful experience at work that left her fired and a predator set free. She feels it is up to her to stop him and expose the truth.
A great feminist revenge story where you will watch some bad men get taken down! The story gets pretty twisty and complex. I had to sit and think on it towards the end. I keep trying to find plot holes, but I think it was pretty well done! The ending was the perfect ending that sums it up but also leaves an opening for some mystery. Bonus points for cat lovers!
“Now I need to make sure I’m his type, too. Because the only way for me to protect the next girl is if I am the next girl.”
A bad day at work. A drunken night. A rogue Instagram follow. That’s all it takes to ruin a life …
The question is, whose life will be ruined? When Billie wakes up in a strange guy’s bed, her first thought is: what happened last night? She can't even remember meeting him. And how the hell did she get to Coney Island?
I’m a little late to the party with reading my first Pip Drysdale novel … but you know what they say … better late than never.
Ooh ahh! This was so good. And there’s a playlist to go with it, double the pleasure as far as I’m concerned
A compulsive, original tale about mystery, romance, risk and relationships from one of our top notch psychological thriller creators. One that will get the heart beating fast and the adrenaline pumping. On the back cover is this paragraph and it’s quite good for a snippet of what’s to come with this read. “A bad day at work. A drunken night. A rogue Instagram follow. That’s all it takes to ruin a life…..” I prefer not to say much on this one because this is a no spoilers zone and I would rather you discover this gem yourself. A twisty, intriguing, suspenseful edge of your seat thriller that you won’t want to put down. Driving this narrative is Billie, a complex, interesting lead protagonist who navigates her way through life and situations with determination, courage and guts. What happens is clever and the plot is extremely entertaining, dangerous and totally addictive. Pip is a inventive and gifted writer that creates these marvellous, twisty reads that you can’t but become obsessed with. The Next Girl exposes the distorted, dark side of obsession, justice and relationships and I’m so excited I boarded this wild ride. A modern day domestic drama that will enthrall you from cover to cover.
I expected more then I got from this one. I felt like it was a lot of how-to and that bored me a little... The story was good but felt like a bit of a drag and predictable. I'm looking forward to trying another book by this author.
I have read a couple of Pip Drysdale’s books, The Strangers We Know & The Paris Affair, and quite enjoyed them so I was excited to read her new book, The Next Girl.
We open with our feisty but damaged protagonist, Billie, waking up in a bed she doesn’t recognise with a guy she has no memory of. In fact, she has no memory of the night before at all. As she starts to piece together the events leading up to this, she remembers today is probably going to go from bad to worse as the law firm, where she works as a paralegal, lost a big case yesterday and she’s about to be fired as it appears to be all her fault. The accused at the center of the case is a doctor whose good looks and charm prevent the women he abuses to see who he really is until it’s too late. As Billie feels responsible for him still being free, she puts actions into place to put herself in his path and therefore, making herself the Next Girl.
I enjoyed the conversational tone of the writing with Billie revealing parts of the story in the way an unreliable narrator would and I found myself constantly trying to guess what was going to be revealed next.
But there were some big issues with the plot that I just could not get past as I did not find them realistic or plausible. One, that I can’t mention as it will give too much away, was just plain ridiculous and I don’t even know why it needed to be included. The long, in-depth descriptions of phone hacking and burner phones were a struggle for me, and I found myself skipping over parts even though I was invested in the vigilante angle to what Billie was up to.
I might be in the minority with my thoughts on this book as I’ve seen many 5-star reviews and the other ladies in my buddy read loved it! Just goes to prove no one book is for everyone!
Thanks to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Australia for sending this book for honest review. All opinions are my own.
Okay. After a five month wait for a library reserve, I'm sold on both The Next Girl AND Pip Drysdale's writing. What HAVE I been missing out on until now?
When Billie wakes up in a stranger's bed after a big night out, she has no recollection of how she ended up there. The only thing she does remember is commiserating with her team over a profilic legal case that they should've won.
As a paralegal, it's Billie's job to gain evidence against Dr Samuel Granger and work out potential witnesses for their client. But it all goes wrong, and Billie gets the blame.
She knows that this surgeon has gotten away with his disgusting crimes against a vunerable woman, and has before. With her job terminated, there's only one way that Billie can get justice for Jane Delaney.
To protect the next girl, Billie must become the next girl.
The task should be simple. Track down Granger, manipulate him to invite her home and use genius skills to obtain all of his digital footprints. Lastly, expose the bastard for exactly who he is.
Then everything Billie had carefully plotted in her plan goes belly up in the most dangerous way.
You'd think she would've learnt after last time, right?
This is exactly everything I was anticipating! Really had me on edge at times, and Billie was so much fun. Also helps how damn addicted I was as well!!
Can confirm. I wanted to keep Button the kitty for myself.
Oh gosh. How I do want to know what happens next after THAT ending though!
The Next Girl by Pip Drysdale is a fascinating read, featuring a narrator who - initially anyway - has her secrets, sharing them with us slowly but surely. At times it's written in second person, as if Billie is talking directly to us. Filling us on on her past and confiding in us now.
The character development was the standout here for me. Billie is sympathetic and engaging. Very likeable. We meet old and new friends so get an understanding of how important connections are to her and how much she values loyalty and friendships.
In many ways this book has something for everyone. Certainly the whodunnit element but with some heavier themes around sexual violence, coercion and control. And of course obsessions, revenge and vengeance. Read my review here: https://www.debbish.com/books-literat...
Billie is working on a case to get a dangerous man behind bars, a man who preyed on woman for his own twisted pleasure. After a witness she calls to the stand goes rouge, Billie is fired from the law firm. In search of justice, Billie sets out to be the next girl. His next target.
Told in first person and written like Billie is talking to you personally, this wild thriller shows the risks Billie is willing to take to get justice, as we find out, this isn’t her first rodeo taking justice into her own hands.
I couldn’t put this book down! I absolutely had to know what happened next, what happened in the past and I was not disappointed!
I will literally read anything Pip @pipdrysdale writes! 😍 I have loved all her books to date and The Next Girl is no exception! I was drawn in right from the beginning and found that I did not want to put it down! Fast-paced, engaging and full of suspense!
If this one isn't on your list, you will want to add it now!
After losing her job when the legal firm Billie works for loses a big case because of her, Billie sets out to make wrongs right! The only catch is she has to put her own life at risk for her plan to work! Can Billie pull her plan off without a hitch?
