Full of intrigue, adventure, and romance, this new series celebrates the unsung heroes—the heroines of WWII.

Ginny Mathis had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. While working as a clerk for Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask her to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. To help occupy her younger sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity. Soon the girls are sneaking around, hiding a shipwreck survivor. Ginny must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?

On My Honor (Heroines of WWII) by Patty Smith Hall was an intriguing book that was full of suspense and adventure. Most World War II books that I have read have taken place either in Europe or in the Pacific. On My Honor took place in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The federal government tried to conceal the dangers that were lurking right under our noses. I have read a few historical fiction books that spoke of the dangers that existed off the coast of Maine but none about the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The government did not want to alarm anyone about the presence of German U-boats so close to our shores so they kept this information quiet. On My Honor also explored the contributions the Girl Scouts made in World War II and the contributions the Girl Guides made in World War I. It was a fast paced book that was well plotted and had a well developed cast of characters.

Ginny and Belle Mathis were sisters and had lived in their little town on the Outer Banks of North Carolina their whole lives with their mother and father. It was the kind of town that community was very important and everyone knew everyone. Ginny had decided to go to the mainland for college to become a nurse. She was in her last semester of nursing school when Pearl Harbor was attacked and the United States entered the war. Ginny’s and Belle’s father had been asked to go to Virginia to help build ships for the war. Before he left, he requested that Ginny come home to help her sister Belle and her mom. Belle was thirteen at the time. Ginny was not sure why her mom and Belle could not manage on their own. Why did she have to come home and help? All she had was one more semester to complete her nursing training. What wasn’t her father telling her?

The good thing about coming home was that Ginny was able to volunteer at the local hospital near the coast guard station several days during the week. She loved everything about nursing and nothing she was asked to do was too much for her. Ginny also worked at the Oregon Ferry where she watched for passengers that were not from the area. She surveyed the passengers to make sure German spies were not getting off the ferry. Working at the ferry was a paid position. The coast guard also asked Ginny to visit the lighthouse a few nights a week and plot the coordinates of any German U-boats she spotted. Ginny’s younger sister Belle had also talked Ginny into becoming their Girl Scout leader when she came home.

One night there was a loud explosion that could be heard and felt from every part of the island. Ginny had witnessed the explosion from the lighthouse and recorded the coordinates. The next day, Ginny, Belle and the rest of the Girl Scout troop discovered that the explosion had caused an oil spill. The oil had come all the way up to the beach. Ginny had to report all that had happened to the Coast Guard so she assigned the girls in her troop to look for birds that needed rescuing from the oil spill until she got back. While Belle and her friends were looking for birds they discovered an injured man. He had been on the boat that had been hit by torpedoes from a German U-boat that had been lurking not too far off the shores of the Outer Banks. The boat had been an oil tanker so when it was hit it produced the oil spill. The injured man told the girls his name was Tim Elliott. He had been transporting a German soldier to New York so that the German soldier could share information with the Allies about the movement of the U-boats in the Atlantic. When the boat was hit, Tim pushed the soldier into the ocean. Somehow they got separated but it was imperative that he find him. Tim Elliott was a British journalist that worked in New York. Belle and her friends beloved Tim’s story so they took him to the abandoned lighthouse keeper’s house. They nursed him back to health. Belle and the other Girl Scouts kept Tim a secret from Ginny but eventually they were forced to divulge their secret to her. Tim and Ginny finally met. Their attraction to each other was strong and a romance built between them. Ginny and Tim worked together to find the German soldier. Everyone else that had been on the boat that had been hit had been accounted for except for the German soldier that Tim was transporting to New York. Could someone on the island be a German conspirator or sympathizer? Would Ginny and Tim be able to find the soldier before more German U-boats cause more people their lives? What roles did Belle and the Girl Scouts play in all this?

On My Honor was the first book that I have read by Patty Smith Hall. I hope she writes more books in this series. I especially enjoy learning about the brave and courageous roles women played in War War II. I was a brownie and a Girl Scout growing up. I had never heard that the Girl Scouts were involved in any way in either war. I found their involvement in both wars enlightening and interesting. On My Honor was about friendship, courage, bravery, community and resourcefulness. It was engaging and heartfelt. I really enjoyed reading On My Honor by Patty Smith Hall and recommend it very highly.

1942 Outer Banks, North Carolina

In the latest of the Heroines of WWII Series, main characters include a group of Girl Scouts doing their part to help US soldiers. This group of 13 year olds was pure delight and their vocabulary and actions rang true for their age. The tension heightened as they discovered an injured man on shore.

I also loved learning new aspects about WWII. Who knew there were German attacks on the east coast of the United States?

What fell short was the speed of the romance for the Girl Scout leader Ginny and the mystery man. While I found the first 75% of the novel to be fun and engaging, my interest fell dramatically in the final quarter of the novel. This would have been stronger without the romance.

My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

This was an enjoyable read overall despite the heartbreaking subject of WW2 of course....it was still insightful learning about how the Outer Banks area of the USA was also attacked by the Germans with their uboats. I hadn't realized some aspects yet again even though I have read oodles! There were plenty of faith elements sprinkled throughout which I appreciated. I guessed at who was a Nazi sympathizer early on but enjoyed the story regardless. I thought the romance developed rather quickly but with war raging, every moment was fraught with uncertainty. It didn't seem a bit rushed/wrapped up a bit tidy, at the end though for some reason. Never the less, I certainly won't mind reading another by this author :)

A must-read for fans of WW2 historical fiction!
A novel, set in North Carolina, which relates the lesser-known details of the German submarines lurking in the coastal waters. They managed to kill many with their deadly torpedos, both military and civilians. This is the story of some very brave North Carolinians, including a young Girl Scout Troop, who were determined to stop the Germans by whatever means necessary.

A great read with a new to me author.
I think that what I most liked about this book was the setting of the Outer Banks. I learned much about this place.
The author has described this place so well that I could visualize it and pretend that I was there without leaving the comfort of my home.
I really enjoyed Ginny and Belle's journey of growing up and learning to do things on their own. I feel like they deserved a medal of honor of their own.
This book gave Girl Scouts a new meaning to me. The way this version of Girl Scouts puts today's Scouts in a not so good way.
I was in the Scouts and we did nothing but sit around and talk. No earning badges or nothing. I was so disappointed. However; we did sell cookies and oh my those are my most favorite cookies! Particularly Shortbread and Peanut butter patties. Yum!
So yes, I can relate to this story some.
I felt sorry for April. Caught in the middle of some nasty business with her dad.
I didn't like Rolf from the get go. The author did a fantastic job with him. Pretty sneaky if you ask me.
Overall, a great story and one I highly recommend!
Well done for keeping my interest all the way through.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

So far, every story in this series taught me something new and different about WW2 which is one of the reasons I am loving this series.

In On My Honor, I have learned about German attacks on the coast of America, and the participation of girl scouts in the war efforts. I enjoyed the girl scout characters in On My Honor. The author pinned down the voice of 12- and 13-year-olds in a very entertaining way which brought lightheartedness to this story.

The writing flowed smoothly and quickly, which made for an easy and quick read.

Fine contribution to the series.
Corralling six Girl Scouts was a big job for Ginny. Not to mention her job on a ferry and volunteering at the infirmary. Besides her group of Scouts couldn’t get into much trouble! Ginny was a watcher for the Coast Guard in 1942 along the coast of North Carolina and saw a tanker explode. What a mess on the beach! The girls wanted to help birds that were coated in oil but end up rescuing a passenger from the ship and then the fun begins. Ms. Hall did a great job portraying teen girls as well as the struggles that Ginny had. They were authentic and believable.
I am enjoying these Heroines of WWII books especially the ones about the home front. We should not forget the past and how we all pulled together and fought for Right.

An unexpected delight, On My Honor takes us to the Eastern Seaboard where German U-boats are destroying the US naval fleet on a pretty regular basis, and wow. How cool is it to finally read about the attacks on the US mainland! Slowly but surely, the WWII subgenre of historical fiction has been exploring things like the Japanese balloon bombs that hit the west coast and across as far as Michigan and now the torpedoes that attacked our ships off the Outer Banks.
Don't get me wrong, I know there are other authors who have tackled these things, but most WWII fiction takes place in Western Europe/England or in Hawaii. Sometimes we get a bit in Asia, but by comparison, almost all US homefront stories are focused on factories, keeping home fires burning, and writing to soldiers and nurses far away.
One excellent aspect was the focus on mental health and the effects of war on a person. I can't say more without potential spoilers, but suffice it to say, I appreciated the inclusion.
Another excellent part of this book is that one of the point-of-view characters is a thirteen-year-old girl, Belle. As such, and because of how the story is written, this book could almost be enjoyed as a middle-grade read. Definitely on the younger YA side for sure. With so few available in Christian Fiction, I thought it worthy to note.
My only quibble was that the romance seemed a bit forced and... quick.

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

I’ve really been enjoying Barbour Fiction’s Heroines of WW2 series because they feature ordinary women making extraordinary choices to support the war effort at home. In this book, our heroines are a group of teenage Girl Scouts and their leader, and the setting for the homefront at war is the Outer Banks. Now, that’s a fresh perspective - a Girl Scout troop joining in the Battle of the Atlantic!

I loved the thought that although these girls were too young for active military or auxiliary service, they could still use those skills to ‘help people at all times.’ And, indeed, they did. When the opportunity arose, they were able to help Captain Timothy Elliott and the Royal Navy.

Adding to my enjoyment was the author’s exploration of God’s providence.

The author was also able to present a unique setting. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Torpedo Junction, a sunken oil tanker, and the Battle of the Atlantic brought close to the Outer Banks, all offered something fresh to wartime fiction.

Patty Smith Hall brings intrigue, adventure and romance in her celebration of the unsung heroes of WW2.

When I first began reading this book, I experienced a little bit of horror--not at all related to the quality of the book, but rather, due to its subject matter. After a trip to Hatteras, I'd already sketched out a book with subject matter very similar to this one. I know the book would be different if I wrote it, but wow, are they close. I'd even read several non-fiction books as historical research.

So, needless to say, I loved the subject matter. Before traveling to Hatteras, and reading those books, I'd had no idea that WWII had come so close to our own shores. The hero in this book is British--if you get to go to Ocracoke, there is a well-maintained British cemetery with some of those who lost their lives buried there. The heroine is an aspiring nurse--and I learned a great deal about the treatment of the injured and the Coast Guard's work on the islands.

The addition of the younger sister and the Girl Guides/Scouts was fascinating--again, I learned so much.

If there was any flaw, perhaps the history overwhelmed the story line too much. I wanted more of the relationship building but there is enough of that to satisfy.

I highly recommend this book if you'd like to learn more about the home front during World War II. There is so much to learn!

I did receive this book free as part of a Celebrate Lit tour, but my opinions are my own. Also, the challenge of how I can still write a story that is similar but not the same is also my own. Blessings!

I was amazed about the knowledge of the Girl Scouts during WWII and their dedication to assisting with the war efforts. On My Honor was engaging from the start with the picturesque words. The characters will stay with you from the young Girl Scouts to Mrs. Mathis the mother of our heroine, Ginny Mathis, after the final word is read. The tale is informative of how German submarines were in the Atlantic Ocean with spies residing in the Outer Banks to assist their mission. Ginny and her Girl Scouts were dedicated and determined to care for the hero even though it became risky. This historical romance was filled with challenges, suspense, faith and romance till the end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publisher without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own thoughts. I highly recommend this book and each one in the Heroines of WWII series to bring a clearer picture of less known happenings on American soil.

My favorite part about this book was learning about the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and how they played a role in WWI and WWII.

Characters:
Ginny was nice...close to perfect in that she always seemed to do the right thing. She did complain about it some...but still. I didn't relate a whole lot with her.
Tim was a nice character, he had more motive than Ginny but neither of them had a whole lot of character growth.
The character with the most growth was Belle, Ginny's younger sister, and I enjoyed her and her friends.

Themes:
Trust God...I think, there wasn't a whole lot of faith content. A few prayers and reminders that we need to pray during hard times, mostly from Belle.
Mentions or characters being Christian and having turned their life over to the Lord but not much real content.

Language:
N/A

Romance:
Nothing for the first half of the book and then when they finally meet it's like instant love on both parts. I get it for Tim because he'd heard about Ginny from her sister but Ginny....she was supposed to be practical yet she let Tim kiss her after knowing him for 2 days! Like...really? Two days ago he could be a German spy and now y'all are kissing?
Their were quite a few kisses in the last half of the book too.

Overall:
This was not excatly my cup of tea...I hate instant love.😂
But the Girl Scout side of it was pretty cool. I didn't realize they were such a big part of the war effort and I quite enjoyed learning about it.
Also, the cover has nothing to do with the book... there's not even planes just submarines in it.
Oh, I also enjoyed that it was set on the coast NC.

I enjoyed this installment in the _Heroines of WWII_ series from Barbour!

Several books have come out in the last year highlighting the lesser-known battles fought during WWII along America's Atlantic coast. This is a solid addition to that, and I think readers will enjoy the plot and learn a fair bit about the history and struggles of the time.

The book does read as though geared toward a younger audience; I'm not sure how much of that is simply because a majority of the secondary characters are younger themselves (young-teen Girl Scouts)--with everything that encompasses. Still, that lent unique insight into how this era may have been for the younger set, something I for one haven't seen much of.

The romance happened fairly quickly for such a short read, as well.

I'd likely re-read other books in the series first, but this was certainly an engaging installment. 3/5 stars.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

When I was young and going through elementary school, I wanted to be in the Girl Scouts. Unfortunately, my mom was teaching in a district 20 miles from where I lived, and my dad worked a semi-swing shift. I would have no ride home. I also wanted piano lessons, but we didn't have a piano, but that's another story for another time. 😆

"On My Honor" is part of the Girl Scout Pledge that is recited at every meeting and sets the stage for the premise of this Heroines of WWII series. Ginny has come home right before her last semester of nursing school to help take care of her mother and younger sister. In taking on her younger sister's Girl Scout troop, she begins teaching them the skills they need to be of service during the war, even though they are too young to actively serve in any of the auxiliaries to the military.

After an oil tanker is torpedoed by a German U-Boat, the girls find a man washed up on the beach from the tanker explosion and take him to the cottage by the lighthouse to treat his wounds and give him a warm place to stay. Ginny's sister, Belle, ends up stitching a wound in his side, while Clementine, another troop member resets his dislocated shoulder.

The man, Tim Elliott, had been guarding a German soldier and was taking him to New York because he had vital information about German U-Boat movements. Tim lost the soldier in the explosion and eventually enlisted the help of Ginny to find the soldier. With the help of the Girl Scouts under her charge.

Barbour Books has partnered with quite a few authors to write this series of ordinary women aiding in the homefront during World War II. These books are always interesting with great plots and relatable characters. Patty Smith Hall has done a wonderful job in detailing this plot and making it move at a readable pace.

This is a five star book, two thumbs up, and a crab bake on the beach.

Intriguing Historical Romance!

I am still thinking about this book since finishing it! First off, the storytelling was fabulous as the author wove together an engrossing story of life on the home front during World War II, this book taking place on the barrier islands of North Carolina around Cape Hatteras. The setting was unique and depicted beautifully, making me wish I could time travel back to the area in 1942 and see it firsthand. Also, the characters were very engaging which made for a captivating read. Belle and her Girl Scout friends contributed so much to this story with their actions and conversations and Ginny and Tim were such an endearing couple as they tried to sort out the mysterious happenings around the island while getting to know each other better. I also loved that prayer was an organic part of these characters’ lives. What amazed me most of all is learning about a part of history that I didn't know had occurred in the U.S. during World War II, that of German U-boats targeting ships off the North Carolina coast. While I have read a little about the Battle of the Atlantic, it was mostly in reference to what transpired in the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic Ocean. I was completely astonished to learn about this piece of history I had never before learned in school and am now eager to find out more. I have been enjoying this entire series and each new historical angle presented in the various books. This one will stay in my mind for a long time and I heartily recommend it!

I really enjoyed this book, from beginning to end it kept my attention, and also the author's notes!

We have Girl Scouts, ships exploding off the coast of North Carolina, and a young woman who has been studying to become a nurse. Love that girl what a big heart Ginny has as she gives of herself for her family and her country!

This is a page turner, unknown, or rumored happening off the coast, and according the notes at the end, people lost their lives to the enemy, and people were kept in the dark.

We are offered sweet young girls who go about helping wild life, and human life, and a woman who gives it all for her family and country! We are also offered a bit of young romance, and I would love to have followed on with their lives, but this book is fiction, but will open your eyes! We were at war before we knew it on our own soil!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Barbour, and was not required to give a positive review.

This was such a fun story! Though the heroine was a young woman, she was joined by her younger sister and her friends in their adventure. Here's the endorsement I wrote for Patty Smith Hall's amazing novel:

Besides a heartwarming romance between a heroic heroine and handsome hero, On My Honor features courageous “heroine-ettes” who bring a youthful dimension to this delightful story. Thwarted goals become blessings-in-disguise as this intrepid group seek to protect their island community from the U-boats lurking close to shore—and a danger that lurks even closer. The characters, the setting, and the suspense create an enjoyable page-turner that, yep!, had me reading past my bedtime.

For whatever reason, I’ve always been drawn to stories with a war setting. Especially WWII. Perhaps growing up in the military instilled a love of history, liberty, and honor that flowed into my love of fiction.

On My Honor is so different than other books I’ve read during the WWII setting in that it involves Girl Scouts. What a surprising twist when I was offered a bit of nostalgia from when I was a Scout myself. I was entertained and amazed by these unexpected heroines.

I love it when a story teaches me something new. I had very limited knowledge of the Battle of the Atlantic before this book, and though this is a work of fiction, it contains true historical events.

I connected most with Ginny and sympathized with her when she had to return to the Outer Banks. But oftentimes new, unexpected roads lead us to the most interesting people and places in life. This is a moving adventure story that includes secrets, danger, romance, and faith.

First Line: Timothy Elliott breathed in a chilly breath of salty air and closed his eyes.

Intrigue, adventure, and romance during WWII, and it all happens near our American shores! Author Patti Smith Hall kept me turning the pages to see if an escaped German officer could be found before he did irreparable harm to our war effort. I love historical fiction and I learned so much about the dangerous activity that occurred near the Outer Banks of North Carolina between January and August 1942. Smith weaves true facts into her fictional story that revolves around Ginny Mathis, Timothy Elliot, and a Girl Scout troop eager to be detectives. Could a troop of Girl Scouts help capture this German spy?

On My Honor has great characters, a budding romance, and an inspiring faith element that's been woven into its plot. It also introduced me to The Battle of the Atlantic, and the nearly 400 ships that were sunk off of Cape Hatteras during these perilous months! This book is a compelling addition to the Heroines of WWII series, and I recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

Ginny is sent home to care for her mother and sister when her father goes off to the mainland to help in the war effort. She feels frustrated she can't complete her nursing school and doesn't understand why he sent for her. While she's home she makes every effort to help by assisting the coast guard and working in the infirmary and training her sister's group of Girl Guides.

A shipwreck lands a stranger on their island shores. His secrets may bring trouble, but they will also help against the unknown trouble of the enemy brewing in a plot against the coast.

It's a simple story, with a more young-adult feel to it. It was a quick afternoon read for me.

Good plot line, however when I entered a giveaway for it, it was in the historical fiction category, which it is. However, it’s also Christian fiction and God and praying being mentioned every other page is just wayyyy too much for me

Thank you though to the author and publisher for the Kindle copy I won in a giveaway.

On My Honor
By Patty Smith Hall
Publisher: Barbour Publishing
Series: Heroines of WW2
Rated: 4
Obtain: Borrow

Back of the Book: “A Girl Scout Troop Joins the Battle of the Atlantic
Full of intrigue, adventure, and romance, this new series celebrates the unsung heroes—the heroines of WWII. Ginny Mathis was finished with nursing school and had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. With her father away, she feels duty-bound to stay and help her mother and younger sister. While working as a clerk for the Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask Ginny and others to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. So to help occupy her teenage sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity along the coast.
Timothy Elliott is no stranger to death. As a British reporter working with the M-6, he’s numb to the losses of war after two years of fighting the Germans. Maybe that’s why he volunteered for this mission—to connect with an ex-German naval officer who stole the Furor’s battle plan for the Atlantic war. When the boat giving him passage to New York is bombed near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Tim is thrown from the boat and wakes up in the care of a group of young girls.
Ginny follows her sneaky sister on a clandestine mission and discovers the shipwreck victim. Ginny knows she must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?”

Impressions: What a fun perspective of WW2. Seeing the severity of war on the shores of their island prompted this Girl Scout troop to fight back. I enjoyed the ingenuity of the girls as they educated themselves and were ready to serve as needed. It was a cozy WW2 read if that is possible. Although the dangers of war were real, but the girls and the budding romance stole the show and deflected the atrocities that were happening elsewhere. I think this was a sweet novel but it wasn’t long enough to create depth in the characters and plot for a more dramatic read. The romance felt fast and shallow. I enjoyed this book though and think younger readers might as well.

Quotes: “… ‘when we can’t find the words, Jesus is there praying right along side us.’” -What a great reminder of how Jesus intercedes in love on our behalf.

Ginny and Belle Mathis are sisters living in a small coastal community on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Ginny was studying to be a nurse, but with her father involved in the war, she has returned home help care for her mother and her younger sister. She nows works on the ferry, volunteers at the hospital putting her nursing skills to good use, and also has a secret role as a coastal watcher. In addition, she has become a Girl Scout leader, and is encouraging the small group to learn skills that might come in useful in the event of an emergency.
When the group headed to do some map reading practice, they didn’t expect to find oil washed up on the shore, or a British Intelligence Officer! The girls take their Girl Scout promise, including “to serve my country”, seriously and what follows is an adventure that is very reminiscent of the “boys own” adventures of the era.
The story unfolds quite slowly, peaks well with a few nice twists, but the ending feels just a little rushed & unrealistic.
As a Brit, I have little knowledge about “torpedo junction” off North Carolina, so called because of the high number of attacks on Allied shipping by German U-boats in World War II. The storyline sent me off to the internet to learn more!

What didn’t work so well for me
The book seemed a little confused as to its audience – in many ways I think it takes influence from the Girl Guide stories that were so popular in the 1920s-1950s, yet its not described as a Young Adult book.
I appreciate that the faith element is important to the author but it did seem to dominate the story in a slightly awkward way – it could have been reined in just a little and actually had a bit more impact.
I liked it, I didn't love it ...

Recommendation
As a life-long member of the Girl Guides, I was excited to read this – though I initially thought that it was based on fact rather than being entirely fictional! I would recommend On My Honor to anyone who has an interest in Girl Scouts/Girl Guides & how they played a real part in the war, or who wants a good old fashioned adventure story!

Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of this book free via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the author & publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own & my review is left voluntarily.

A group of Girl Scouts find themselves embroiled in espionage when 2 strangers wash up on the Outer Banks of Oregon.

Ginny Mathis comes home one semester shy of her nursing degree at her father's urging to come and help take care of her mother and younger sister, she trains the troop to watch for German U-Boats and report suspicious activity. They are tested when the battle comes to the home front with the arrival of 2 strangers.

An engaging read, I liked comradery between the girls as they work together, as well as how the sisters become closer through their experiences. I thought it was cool how the Girl Scouts contributed to the war efforts, and all of the useful skills that Ginny had taught them.

Overall, a well written story full of adventure, faith, family, and romance. I loved how it showed everyday people working together to protect their country!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book didn’t quite click for me. I really liked the setting-I’m a sucker for anything set on the Outer Banks - and liked that it drew attention to lesser known worries of a US invasion in WWII. The story elements just didn’t quite come together, though. It was almost as if the author had a checklist of plot and character elements to add in and just marched right down it so ideas were introduced but not fully integrated into the story. The relationship between the two main characters also seemed to move unconvincingly fast.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

On My Honor is a historical novel set in the Outer Banks, North Carolina during World War II. Ginny Mathis comes home from nursing school to help her family. She leads her sister Belle's Girl Scout troop. When a British journalist, Timothy Elliott, is shipwrecked - after saving the life of a German man on the ship he was on, Ginny and the Scouts all befriend him and aid in his recovery. They become drawn into a search for the mysterious and dangerous German man from the boat, while Ginny also becomes romantically involved with Timothy.

I wanted to read this novel because I love historical fiction and especially am interested in the World War II home front.

This was an interesting read with a unique setting (Outer Banks, NC during the war). The author did a wonderful job at setting the scene with fascinating historical details.

I really liked both Ginny and her younger sister Belle. They were both smart and brave and really wanted to do the right thing in difficult times. I loved Timothy and the Ginny-Timothy romance.

This is inspirational fiction and the religious message is presented throughout the book with the characters' words, not just their actions. There is a great deal of discussion about religion. The novel will appeal to readers who are looking for an inspirational story.

I have been reading all the books in the Heroines of WWII series and that has introduced me to some new to me authors. Patty Smith Hall is one of those new to me authors. I enjoyed reading the book overall but there were a few things that just didn't make sense to me. When Tim first meets the Girl Scouts who rescue him, he tells them he is looking for a "friend" that he was traveling with, but then is surprised that they know about him. Also, Ginny is given a picture of Tim and Rolf by the Coast Guard, but then the leader of the Coast Guard is surprised she knows what Rolf looks like. Also, there was a big thing made about Tim's British accent, but Ginny and Belle's mom was from Britain and she would have had an accent, too, so it would have been normal, not unusual. I wasn't aware of the German attacks so close to the US shore so it was interesting reading about this part of history. I really liked the biblical faith element and the characters praying and wanting to do the right thing. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.

I found this story intriguing since it is based on actual historical happenings and presented by the author in a way that draws readers right into the action. A group of thirteen-year-old Girl Scouts proves no match for those who wish to assist the German War effort during World War II. I hadn’t realized that Germany sent submarines to torpedo ships so near the United States’ East Coast shores. The compelling tale includes the US Coast Guard, an English reporter on a special mission, and a nurse who leads the scout troop, plus the enemy who infiltrates America. The palpable plot involves secrecy, action, and suspense. The novel seems quite authentic and the characters believable and their actions realistic. This book adds a new tale to the collection of World War II dramas. It would be great for students to read as they study history and could also be used by book clubs since it offers plenty to discuss. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

This is a nice addition to the Heroines of WWII series. There's a bit of romance, coming-of-age, friendship, and family included. There is a romance angle, but it felt a bit forced, and I'm not sure it was really necessary. The faith element is stronger than what is found in some books of this genre, so readers should be aware of that prior to reading this story. At times, the dialogue was formal/stiff, particularly in relation to the teenage characters. I've heard a lot about the Outer Banks over the years, so I enjoyed learning a bit more about it. And as a former Girl Scout, I really liked that component of the story.
