The Last Eternal #2

Requiem for a Soldier

Rate this book
The truest stories are written in blood.

The wanderer knows this, for over the last century he has lived those stories, has seen them scrawled in his blood or the blood of others.

Others like those dead Perishables scattered about the noble’s courtyard, like those servants of the enemy, mortal and not, lying beside them.

And yet…he knows it is only the beginning.

They are coming.

Servants of the enemy, creatures forged and fashioned for one purpose and one purpose only—to kill anything in their path. And now their path leads them directly to the wanderer, to the Perishables, and to the family he has sworn to protect.

The story is not yet finished.

There is more tale yet to be told, and more blood needed for the telling of it.

The cursed blade has been unsheathed, the lone wanderer wanders alone no longer.

A hundred years of hiding, of running, but now it’s over.

Now, the real story begins.

And the blood will flow.

Requiem for a Soldier is book two of the bestselling epic fantasy homage to westerns, The Last Eternal, by Jacob Peppers. It is the tale of one man, known simply as the wanderer, as he sets out to keep a cursed, magical blade from the hands of the enemy. It is an action-packed, character-driven story of one man's quest to save the world, a quest which will pit him against all manner of warriors, monsters, and magic.

Continuing on from book 1, this sees the group leave the town and progress deeper into the wilderness. Plenty of action, and some character building.

I dropped a star because of the excessive use of "100 years" in the book, to me it was just annoying,
I recieved an arc copy of this book

------
Oh what a shame. I had my difficulties with this book compared to the first book, which I happily rated 5 stars.

The second book was extremely repetitive. From beginning to end, it always followed the same pattern: fight, escape, fight, rest, escape, and so on.
Even though I appreciate a good fight scene, there were far too many, and they always followed the same, predictable pattern.

The conversations with Ungr and the family were also always identical: Go ahead, don't wait for me, I'll follow. No, we can't leave you alone. But you must, etc. etc.
There are countless conversations of this kind - just too many.

What I really appreciated about the first book was that Ungr was on his own. He was lost in his thoughts and had inner monologues (or talked to his horse, which turns out to be the same thing), and struggled with whether or not he should seek people's company. This created a nice, atmospheric mood.

In the second book he is permanently surrounded by the family and/or a larger group.
That just didn't work well for me.

There were maybe one or two scenes where Ungr was alone and those scenes were the best of the whole book, in my opinion.

I also still didn't really get to enjoy the family itself, it all just seemed too artificial, too perfect, too sugar-coated.

Towards the end of the book, the most unnecessary and stupid thing that could have happened happened: I had to roll my eyes constantly, unfortunately.

Ungr himself is such a great character, but, in my opinion, some relationships don't do him or the book any good.

Even though I like Ungr very much, I'm not sure if I should continue reading the series, as it appears he will now move on with an even larger group.

The action is turned up a notch in the second book of the series. The wanderer is no longer alone he now has a duel purpose; to save the world and protect the family he has grown to care about from evil’s mission to destroy humanity.

The main character and supporting cast are very believable and the world building is still very good. There is a good amount of character development between the group and individually which I was glad to see. The fight scenes are well thought out and with very imaginative monsters.

There are no chapters in this book just one story quite cleverly broken up. There are some repetitive parts in the book and more overuse of the word winced again (25 to 30 mentions this time I think). I knocked a star off for the brothel in the middle of nowhere you may or may not agree. Despite this it had a fantastic ending and I’m still enjoying the story and wondering what will happen next.

I do the like main character, Ungr or Youngest, very much. But I find the long soliloquies and philosophizing a little too much self-berating. Here and there if he muses on the loving relationship with Decker’s family, that’s fine. But it is too often repeated. I get it!
Also the constant understanding is so sweet that I will need insulin soon. Maybe I’m too cynical? But I want a little more chomp and bite in my story. So it takes about 70% of the book before new creatures appear and give Ungr a run for his money. Finally he is being tested and doesn’t always win.
But I appreciate the world building so far, and hope there’s more meat to come.
Plus no one better mess with Veikr! I will be very unhappy.

What attracted me to the first book was the original idea and waited for that idea to expand and develop into a beautiful story. It's the second book and this has not happen yet, started the third book with high hopes but still no.
The main character starts from a cautious person that evaded capture for centuries and while it does not have a specific plan to fight back it still sounds good enough for me, into a totally reckless person that disregards every thing that had previous learned and is basically a teenager without any depth or complexity. The world becomes a black and white world without any kind of substance, "they are bad"/"we are good".

And there are other serious flaws in the book in my opinion:
- he is one of the best warriors in the world and he is delivering on this by defeating any bad guy that he encounters but he gets beaten to death by a drunken peasant(unarmed I might add)? Oh come on
- why there is a brothel in a village that is cut from all human settlements? How this can be explained? The workers there should be the relatives of the people there so why they should let them have this fate? And what can you do with any currency if no one can enter or leave the village? Historically isolated villages are very tight together because you depend on you neighbor and he to you and not a single one from what I know had a brothel
- a sheriff, this story changes from medieval setting to a wild west one, throw some firearms and it is a set

One thing that is the battle between the main character and the Soldier, how that guy managed to get all the traits and defects is unclear but with a good twist it has some potential.

♡ Found Family
♡ Wholesome MC
♡ Well Written Fighting Scenes

This book really helped set the stage for the series. I really liked how Ungr has a bit of a found family moment as well. I really enjoyed this read, it was tense and entertaining.

A very good book. Haunting and tragic but that's what keeps you turning pages. The main characters are endearing and relatable. The world building is well thought out and perfectly executed. The plot is exciting and intriguing. Everything about the book is realistically fantastical. (That will make sense when you read it) The author does a great job using smooth transitions in the between moments. I had a hard time putting the book down.

Ungr the Wanderer continues on his trip with Dekker and his family. As the last Eternal, he is always pursued because of the evil sword he carries with him. After a hundred years of running will he finally meet the death he has been close to so many times ? With plenty of action, intrigue and mystery you will not be able to put this one down. As always the storyline is incredible along with the characters.

It could be better. I think its maily the MC character that needs improvement. He is so plain and strict and not funny at all and people go to him constantly calling him a "good man", the book feels like an righteous and narcissistic males teen fantasy. Furthermore the depiction of Woman, especially Ella is horrible. She is so submissive that all words out of her mouth are about the man in her life. Sometimes she says she is going to do stuff, but just to sit back after a man ' heroically' says its 'no use anyway, you doing anything'.
The plot is okayish, but just running away and making people die by meeting them on the run is also not optimal.

The novelty is wearing off.

The book is still interesting, but I'm starting to see some patterns repeat themselves a little bit too much.
- The interplay between Ungr and Derek's family was a bit copy-paste
- Unger's inner turmoil has been hashed and rehashed by now
- The prose style is starting to feel redundant. It's almost like the author is compelled to make up creative allegories every few steps. They don't flow naturally.

I think the little crew has been struggling against overwhelming odds for so long that it's becoming suffocating. MC's been surviving by the skin of his teeth the whole of this book.

The last village was a bit of an immersion breaker for me. The dialogue didn't match the situation. The power balance was broken at the end, with enemies being way too accommodating.

The book concluded, I didn't get any feeling of forward motion. We've learned nothing new of this world or the stakes. We've just been running away. That's it.

I'm not satisfied.
I might give the next volume a try, but it's a toss up at this point.

Unbearable. The weaknesses of the first book were magnified, and he made room for new flaws.

The writing is just plain poor Quick example: the author uses the word "creature" 3 times in the same sentence. His sentence structures are still off - it can be hard to follow the overuse of unnecessary words surrounded by an abundance of commas. For a book that's less than 250 pages, it is so wordy. Ungr's constantly repeats the same thoughts The characters have the same back-and-forth dialogue in every action scene ("you go, I will stand fight" followed by a short debate, then either agreement to those terms or "no, Ungr, we stand together").

Inconsistency in enemies' fighting abilities. One "creature" was easily defeated by Ungr in the first book, but is now far more dangerous and threatening to him in this fight.

This book is just brutal all around.

There is not much I can say about the events of Requiem for a Soldier without spoiling things for the readers. I will say that this second book in the The Last Eternal trilogy is even better than the first book. It builds on all the plots and characters from the first book.

Jacob Peppers has a knack for balancing plot and character development without slowing the fast pace of his novels. Here we get to see more of Youngest's past and the events that have lead up the start of this series. As events play out we see our MC's character growth as the stakes get higher and things get more intense.

This is old-school, classing fantasy at its best, and I love it. If you like classic fantasy with a twist, and you like travel fantasy, magical swords, highly intelligent horses and great friendships, then this is the perfect book for you.

Oh great - give the whiner more reasons to have the mopes!

The author makes several groups of untrained town riffraff master forest rangers *rofl*.

The author definitively doesn´t understand small isolated villages: if such a small village was isolated that long it means almost everybody is related or part of a huge family clan.. Without outside trade they have no need for money and with the family structures there would be no brothels!! Furthermore. these villagers should be more interested in producing enough food and wood...

I liked the second book because of the character development rather than the story itself - though it was also good. Both the protagonist and the secondary characters go through some development through their experiences together. I also love that a horse is featured in this series as an important character with some interesting human-like attributes, but is portrayed as the last of his kind and different than other regular horses. The ending was better than in the first book. Not so abrupt but a cliffhanger.

The story is progressing

Still don't know why the false Eternals appeared or how they stole the abilities of the same or why they want to destroy humanity. Now there is an Untamed Land. What kind of world are we in? Which leads to the next piece.

No map. When a storyline doesn't have a map it means that the back story hasn't been built up. I like the characters but there is much work to be done.

Ungr has been discovered by the imposter Soldier and is desperately trying to escape the city with as many of the Perishables rebels as he can. But he’s only able to escape with one small family and they are being chased by revenants and the Unseen and he can’t let them get the cursed blade.

Fave scenes: fighting the Unseen at the gate, finding the creek, Tactician’s help and the fight outside the church.

Fun adventure

I hadn’t expected to follow through with these books but am now two in and enjoying. Plenty of adventures but the story depth continues to evolve over time. A bit of the “emotions” the wanderer feels gets repetitive, time and again, time and again…oops…but it still makes for quick reading and nice downtime.

party is over

The first book was really interesting. This one kind of dragged with some fighting scenes thrown in. Lots and lots of traveling and too much introspection from the protagonist. Got interesting towards the end but not enough to keep me interested. I’m jumping off this train. Maybe will come back another time.

Very good!

A gripping novel full of evil body snatchers, invisible monsters, revenants, and various other baddies and the group of people on a quest to stop them and create something better. Highly recommended!

Heck Yeah!

Character development and action. Finally, a book where the character developed. Last few books I have read (not of this series), it seemed, the characters never really changed. Even as they grew and defeated the initial bad guys.

Excellent story. A good continuation of the previous book and a fun read. Good vs evil

has to work at it, it wins! Nice to remember and have a hero and good people behind him. Reminds us of some truths.

The evil continues to hunt him. The last resistance before extinguishing the light of this world. The Wanderer has opened himself to connections. For them he runs no longer.

Yeehaw! Well book 2 didn’t last long! Couldn’t put it down! Grimdark with a western twist! 🗡️🏇🔥

The story was enjoyable but, very slow

The amount of internal dialogue was a burden at times. I almost gave up but then some action and engagement showed up. I am not certain if I will read another. The book was good but not active enough for my liking.

Pretty much non stop action from start to finish. Ungr continues to reconnect with his humanity and remembers what it is he fights for and in this story, he really has to fight!

The story meanders like a lonely path along a winding creek, despite the protagonist being in constant danger. Overall, a good read and a satisfying ending. I appreciate the moral questions of the story and most of the answers. Good over evil, doing what is right, putting others over self.
