- As Halloween night approaches, a teenage girl has been grounded for her actions of wrong doing. Her punishment is to stay home and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. As the little spooks begin their neighborhood celebration, an extraordinary treater pays a visit to the house.
- A man returns to his childhood memories by paying a visit to a simpler time. His Autumn excursion causes a curiosity that peaks with impenetrable exits of a boarded up haunted house.
- A woman receives a mysterious beautiful bouquet of roses. The script on the florist card reveals a message that relates to a parallel dimension. A self contained plane of existence where scorned lovers, broken relationships and skeletons in the closet slowly emerge from the darkness.
- A man retreats to a secluded cabin he considers a wooded hidden haven. There he revisits a morbid memory unaware that a deadly design of revenge is in full spiritual swing. His fate for the future is in the capable hands of karma.

Last Waltz Publishing showcases a hallows’ evening of haunted stories that should only be read with the lights on. These Lingering Shadows features the talents of Guy Quintero, Daemon Manx, James G. Carlson and Heather Miller. The anthology pulls no punches on its paranormal back wooded stories of the unexplained. From a cursed werewolf’s revenge upon a small village to an encounter with a witch/demon/enchantress, these bloodstained pages of unholy cleansing leads the reader down a cobblestone path to dark fiction.

Compiled by Daemon Manx, These Lingering Shadows runs the gambit of gnashing teeth, ripping flesh and cracking bone literature. These disturbing sabbaticals of the strange may cause fear, shock or anxiety…you have been warned. With a whopping 15 stories and a forward by Candace Nola, so many uncomfortable poetic moments await that you may ask yourself…what would Samhain do?

Grab your potato sack and prepare for these talented authors to fill it up with handfuls of horrific fiction. These dark delicacies will satisfy that scary sweet tooth we all have. What a great Autumn Horror Bookworm Recommendation read! Go grab a copy and find out for yourself…it’s everything you will ever want in an anthology.

OK, so as it says in the title, this is an anthology of gothic and haunting tales! And it lives up to that title! These stories will haunt you long after reading, and romance you with the gothic atmosphere and scenery. 🖤 With something for everyone, from witches and vampires, to zombies and werewolves, tales of hauntings, rituals, revenge and halloween nights….

I thoroughly enjoyed every story, they were all very different, yet all very captivating! My favourites were, 'HALLOW HOUSE', 'BEHOLD, DEATH ARRIVES, A DUET OF ASH AND FANG', 'THE DARE', 'CRIES OF THE NIGHT', 'BELLADONNA'S CURSE', 'FLESH AND CHOCOLATE', and my stand out was 'DEVLIN'S MANSE'! 🖤🖤

As always, I will write a few words for each story….

THE FAR FIELD By Heather Miller - a clandestine meeting in the far field, when all the workers have returned home, starts off romantic, yet turns sad, lonely, and deadly! With some chilling vengeance! Beautifully haunting!

HALLOW HOUSE By Jo Kaplan - at the age of 12, all of Jordan's friends disappeared, they disappeared in Hallow House after a Halloween night dare. And 60 years later, Jordan is going looking for them! Very creepy, trippy and mind-bending, with a shocking ending!

NORY'S By Michael J. Moore - Gene is an ailing widower. He overhears a conversation about the local crematorium and decides to pay it a visit and check it out for himself……things have changed, dramatically!! Atmospheric and creepy!

BEHOLD, DEATH ARRIVES, A DUET OF ASH AND FANG By Jae Mazer -  Vero lives with her dead sister, and is feeding a beast in the woods near their home! There is a perfectly good reason behind it! A tale of witches, werewolves and harsh revenge!

HELL HATH NO FURY By Diana Olney - Claire receives a bunch of roses, but they make her uneasy, very uneasy! Why? A jilted ex girlfriend may have the answer. A dark, haunting love story!

A HALLOWEEN GHOST STORY By Christy Aldridge - Kenzie is grounded after being involved in a drink driving incident, and now she has to stay home and pass out candy on Halloween night, she isn't allowed to go inside until all the candy is gone! But someone else isn't going to be happy if the candy is all gone when they get there….. a scary Halloween ghost story!

MINE By Matt Scott - madness and spooks! Jugal Bishop is a stubborn man, wanting everything his way and his way only, including the building of his manor and the conditions on which someone may live there. The people of Bishops Cove want him and his house gone! They hang him and attempt to burn the manor to the ground. Noone but a Bishop is allowed to live there however, without dying a violent death! Will a family feud finally come to an end?

THE DARE By Tony Evans - Gina has dared Tim, the new boy in town, to walk through every room of The Baily House, in exchange for a date! Tim is more than keen, puts on a brave face, and enters! If only it was that easy….what awaits inside the house?? Very sinister and scary!

CRIES OF THE NIGHT By Guy Quintero - Matilda is stuck with her abusive father, running his errands for him, until a chance encounter with a man named Gabriel. She discovers The Hunted, has an out of body experience and becomes one with The Countess! The Countess, deprived of an innocent's blood, seeks brutal vengeance on he who has sullied her mind and soul….

THE FEEDING By D.E. Grant - Selene is a creature of the night, a Vampire if you will, but born into a line of witches! She has her dragon familiar, Wyldfyre, to aid her. There is an attack on her coven at the yearly gathering, but whose side is she on? She is on a mission to create her own race, of vampire-witches! Very bloody and brutal.

BELLADONNA'S CURSE By Danielle Manx - Grace has cancer, but she is also a witch, and it's Halloween! Will a body switching spell be the answer to her prayers and relieve her of her awful pain…?

DEVLIN'S MANSE By Daemon Manx - Devlin's Manse, a beautiful Victorian house, stands derelict, and has done for decades. But there are echoes, echoes of James and Mary and their chilling life together! Taut with tension, this story gave me goosebumps! Creepy, haunting, eerie and twisty! 🖤

FLESH AND CHOCOLATE By James G. Carlson - to say Felix is excited to go Trick or Treating is a huge understatement! His big brother Parker reluctantly agrees to take him! What a night they end up having! When Felix has his bag of candy stolen by the local bullies, they all set off to find them and get it back! Felix comes across an old lady in a hut who says she can bring Felix's dead Dad back, for one night only……

Revenge is very sweet in this fun, macabre tale.

RIDING THE GHOST TRAIN By Jack Wells - our main character is a drunkard, he has hit a new low, literally! He is now also an abuser of women. Feeling ashamed of his actions, he heads to a secluded cabin to detox, alone….or is he? Left to battle his demons, we watch his quick descent into insanity! Terror filled and suspenseful, terrifying and chilling!

A DREAM OF DEAD LEAVES By Jeremy Megargee - Fiona takes her own life on her favourite night of the year, Halloween, in a haunted house! Her sister dreams of her and wants to be with her again, she sees her everywhere….will she follow in her footsteps?

Haunting, brutal and beautiful!

These Lingering Shadows is the anthology to read this season. These dark tales range from haunting to horrifying, and the diversity of author voices make each one a unique trip into the shadows. It checks all the boxes for the perfect Halloween season read.

Within these pages are three very different stories about inner demons and regret: the brooding and suspenseful Halloween story “ Hallow House” by Jo Kaplan, the dark and evocative tale “Hell Hath No Fury” by Diana Olney, and the impactful story “Riding the Ghost Train” by Jack Wells.

“The Far Field” by Heather Mills is one of the most darkly beautiful and beautifully haunting things I’ve read. I don’t know how to do this story justice. I was mesmerized. By contrast, “Flesh and Chocolate” by James G. Carlson was fun and creepy. I love the characters; I love the story; and the ending was priceless.

But a near-Halloween release has to have a witch story, and “Belladonna’s Curse” by Danielle Manx is an engrossing, sometimes darkly humorous story of arrogance meets witchcraft to fit the bill nicely. But then you need witch persecution. “Behold, Death Arrives, a Duet of Ash and Fang” by Jae Mazer is a flowing and gripping tale about obscene horrors and fierce determination. Full of dark mystery and suspense, this one rips the emotions from your mind and gut. And then this anthology ups the ante with a bloody tale of witches and vampires, “The Feeding” by D. E. Grant.

Of course, there’s more. This diverse mix also has the haunting short “Nory’s” by Michael J. Moore; the intense tale “Mine” by Matt Scott; the absolutely brutal story of torture and betrayal that is “Cries in the Night” by Guy Quintero; and the dark and wrenching tale “A Dream of Dead Leaves” by Jeremy Megargee.

And as is appropriate, These Lingering Shadows has three excellent haunted house themed stories, all well-written but each with its own flavor and style. “A Halloween Ghost Story” by Christy Aldridge is a fun, classic-style story; “Devlin’s Manse” by Daemon Manx is an intriguing and macabre gothic mystery; and “The Dare” by Tony Evans is suspenseful and terrifying.

This anthology is an amazing collection of haunting tales, supernatural horrors, psychological terrors, and engrossing suspense told by a diversity of talented authors. You’ll want to read them all, to read the whole book cover-to-cover without pause. It is a shelf-worthy book and highly recommended read.

Halloween is upon us, Autumn is in the air, and it is spooky season. Time to read and watch all things spooky. I just finished reading These Lingering Shadows: An Anthology of Gothic and Haunting Tales. This anthology captures spooky season, Halloween, and Autumn all rolled into one.

This anthology consists of 15 creepy tales that literally will have you looking over your shoulder in fear. With each story I felt that creeping dread each time I turned the page. There are witches, vampires, ghosts, Gothic tales, Folk Horror, enough to appease all of your spooky season desires.
If you are looking for a quintessential Halloween, spooky season read, look no further. So, turn off the TV, light some candles, listen to the wind picking up as Autumn has arrived, and read this creepy goodness. I dare you. Thank you Daemon Manx for a copy of this anthology in exchange for an honest review. I have a new favorite for the Halloween season. 10 out of 10 bloody pumpkins 🎃

These Lingering Shadows is collection of fifteen gothic tales compiled by Last Waltz Publishing with a little something for every flavor of horror fan—ghosts, witches, revenge, vampires, haunted houses, demons—both literal and personal, and so much more.

“The Far Field” by Heather Miller - a secret romance between a field worker and the field owner’s son, once sweet soon becomes inconvenient and must be handled. Haunting, beautiful tale of vengeance.

“Hallow House” by Jo Kaplan – Sixty years ago on Halloween night, Jordan’s friends went missing after a dare gone wrong. Now as an elderly man of 72, he is going back to Hollow House to find his friends. Dizzyingly creepy and unsettling!

“Nory’s” by Michael J. Moore – An old-timer out for his daily stroll overhears a group of teens sharing an outlandish tale about the creepy origins of local pizzeria. When he arrives at the pizzeria to share the laughable gossip with his friend who owns it, he gets the shock of his life.

“Behold, Death Arrives, A Duet of Ash and Fang” by Jae Mazer- Vero lives with her dead sister and feeds a monster in the woods to gain its loyalty to exact revenge for her family.
“Hell Hath No Fury” by Diana Olney – After receiving a bouquet of roses from her ex-lover, Claire is ill at ease. Dark, heart-wrenching, haunting with an unexpected ending.

“A Halloween Ghost Story” by Christy Aldridge – After teenage Kenzie is grounded after a drunk driving incident by her parents she is forced to stay home on Halloween and can’t go inside until she gives out every single piece of candy. If she runs out of candy before a particular trick-or-treater arrives, things will not go well for Kenzie. A creepy good campfire-type tale.

“Mine” by Matt Scott- A power-obsessed man is intent on building his mansion, to his exacting specifications and disregard for the lives of his workers, in the town that bears his name. The townspeople are fed up and want him gone, by any means necessary. Years pass, and the mansion is associated with numerous deaths, when a descendent of the original owner takes ownership of the mansion. The past meets the future of one family with a violent explosive result.

“The Dare” by Tony Evans - Tim, the new boy in town, takes a dare to walk through every room of the rumored to be haunted Baily House. The prize—a date with Gina! Footprints in the house lead Tim to believe that others have taken the dare before him, and he’s not sure what he will find inside.

“Cries of the Night” by Guy Quintero – Matilda is forced to serve her drunken father’s wishes and take his abuse without complaint. On her nightly chore to fetch his ale, she is captivated by a stranger who kidnaps her. A life-changing event bonds her to a being who seeks to avenge her innocence to those who have wronged her.

“The Feeding” by D.E. Grant- Selene is born into a line of witches and offered up as a sacrifice to the vampires by her mother, a powerful mage. Now a powerful Witch Vampire hybrid, she seeks to create a clan of her own kind. A vampire and witch war erupts and only one side can win.

“Belladonna’s Curse” by Danielle Manx - Grace is a witch whose cancer hasn’t responded to traditional or holistic treatments. Next best plan is a body switching spell on Halloween with a guest of her B&B who has issues of his own.

“Devlin’s Manse” by Daemon Manx - Devlin's Manse, a once beautiful Victorian house, is in dire need of renovation due to decades of vacancy. When workers come into the house and begin to work and bring it back to its former glory, the lives of inhabitants James and Mary become more threatened.

“Flesh and Chocolate” by James G. Carlson – Felix has been looking forward to Halloween night and going trick-or-treating with his older brother Parker and his friend Tig, much to their dismay. Eager to be one of the treated like one of the older kids, he follows their plan to go trick-or-treating in the rich area of town. When bullies steal Felix’s candy, he encounters a stranger and makes a bargain with her—she gets the bullies and he gets a wish granted, one that yields sweet results.

“Riding the Ghost Train” by Jack Wells - An affluent, but angry drunkard has sunk to a new low—he has now struck his wife in front of their children. In shame and remorse, he has exiled himself to the family cabin to detox alone —so he believes. Is he going insane from alcohol deprivation or is he really losing his mind? Very creepy and atmospheric story.

“A Dream of Dead Leaves” by Jeremy Megargee – Years after her sister Fiona has taken her own life in a haunted house on Halloween night, Olive enters the house seeking a connection to her sister and is met with dreams of Fiona beckoning her to an unending Halloween. Haunting and heartbreaking.

This anthology was excellent, and I really loved how the stories were arranged to achieve the maximum emotional impact on the reader. Heather Miller’s story “The Far Field,” “Hell Hath No Fury” by Diana Olney, Daemon Manx’s story “Devlin’s Manse,” and Jeremy Megargee’s “A Dream of Dead Leaves” were emotional gut punches that hit me especially hard. I also loved how the Halloween themed stories, “A Halloween Ghost Story” by Christy Aldridge and “Flesh and Chocolate” by James G. Carlson were also spread out through the book along with the haunted house stories, “Hallow House”, “Mine,” and “The Dare” were sprinkled throughout so as not to lose their effect. They were perfectly placed. I absolutely LOVED “Behold, Death Arrives, A Duet of Ash and Fang” by Jae Mazer. Last Waltz Publishing knocked this anthology out of the park and I look forward to their next outing.

Great Gothic Horror, Batman!

An exceptional collection of Gothic Horror centered stories that I enjoyed for a nice spooky season read! I was introduced to some stellar authors via this book, and definitely hope to read more from them in the future! I loved that each story had a congruent theme, and yet, each seemed fresh and varied. In a themed collection, this can be a difficult task to achieve, but I found each story to be engaging and enjoyable!

I’ve read my fair share of gothic horror, since it is Brandy’s favorite, and consider it one of my many favorite sub-genres. But, all too often, there is a not-so-subtle theme of cheezy romance running through them, as if the two must go hand-in-hand. Not so with this collection! Most people picture a damsel in a billowy night dress in front of a creepy manor when they think of gothic horror. While this collection was a gothic horror collection it felt fresh. It also would be suitable for readers who want a more mild horror experience.

All in all, I give These Lingering Shadows by Last Waltz Publishing five stars out of five! Fantastic story placement, fun reading, and some great gothic slow burn stories! It is a great way to kick off your fall reading! Until next time, my friends.

What this collection of horror stories does right in my opinion is, it understands that there are many different kinds of horror. From the slightly eerie feeling that creeps up your spine over the horrible feeling of loss, grief and oncoming madness to gruesome body horror, it's all in here. It's the perfect little treat for those who enjoy a creepy good night story.

What a fine collection of spooky tales, many of them set at Halloween. There are a wide variety of writing styles presented, and not a dud in the bunch. You might be unfamiliar with these authors, but give their work a try . . . you will not be disappointed.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing.

These Lingering Shadows is filled with fifteen amazingly creepy and haunting tales. I found the whole anthology very enjoyable, especially for this time of year. Jumping into this collection was such fun I couldn’t wait to see what the next story brought. Ghosts, haunted houses, vampire-witch hybrids, and more are all inside these pages. I recommend this to all horror readers and fans of the supernatural. Lots of talent in this book, so grab yourself a copy, top it off with a cozy blanket and your favorite drink, because once you start this one you won’t want to stop.

The Far Field- Heather Miller
What starts off as something lovely quickly goes dark when the main character learns the truth about Nathaniel. A haunting tale of sweet revenge.

Flesh and Chocolate- James G. Carlson
Felix was so excited for trick or treating and it was finally time to head out. Unfortunately, some bullies stole his candy, but in the end, it turned out to be the best night of the year. A creepy story where revenge comes in an unexpected way.

Hallow House - Jo Kaplan
A creepy story centered around Hallow House, which is believed to be haunted by Donna Martin. When kids go in, they never make it out. What exactly happens? Read it and find out.

Hell Hath No Fury- Diana Olney
Claire is haunted by her past. Bad memories, roses, and Becca. As she proceeds on her downward spiral, you wonder if this is all a bad dream. Perhaps not though. This is beautifully written!

Riding the Ghost Train- Jack Wells
A man struggling with alcohol addiction decides to dry out after an unfortunate event. He travels to a cabin to face his demons and finds out this will be harder than he thought.

Belladonna’s Curse – Danielle Manx
Grace is terminally ill and isn’t ready to give up yet. After herbal medicines, chemo and radiation fail, she decides to attempt something new. It’s a bit risky, but she does it anyway. Will it work out the way she hopes?

Behold, Death Arrives, a Duet of Ash and Fang – Jae Mazer
Vero’s family was killed and now she plans revenge against the man who did it. She befriends an odd creature to help move things alone. Great twist at the end of this one.

Nory’s – Michael J. Moore
The youth of the town are talking about Nory’s and what it used to be. Gene overhears the conversation and decides to head there himself thinking the owner will get a kick out of what he just heard. Once he arrives, he is the one that gets a surprise.

Mine – Matt Scott
Bishop’s Cove came to be in 1809. Owned by Jubal, a ruthless and petty man. He was cruel to his workers and ruled the cove with a heavy hand. Eventually, the residents turned on him. This is where all falls apart even for Bartholomew. Great haunted tale.

Cries of the Night – Guy Quintero

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of 'These Lingering Shadows: An Anthology of Gothic and Haunting Tales', right on time for some spooky season reading and let me tell you I am completely in love with the wonderful short stories included in this one.

This spooky season, the super talented Daemon Manx and Last Waltz Publishing bring you an anthology of gothic tales and horrors full of tragedy, heartbreak, wonderment and terror.

This anthology includes 15 beautiful horror gems from some of the most talented and terrifying authors around, offering their beautifully penned gothic tales with a modern twist.
Enter a beautifully dark world,as in here, there are stories of deception, possession, despair and remorse, betrayal and of course ... death.

Through the pages of this book, you dear reader, will be transported into dark places and shadows, catacombs and hidden passages and get to meet witches, vampires, secrets and curses.

Oh dear traveller of the dark realms, lover of the horror genre, light a candle and lock the doors because the hour of the witch is near and this is the ultimate book to make this spooky season a true delight.

And even thought I loved each and every one of these terrific and terrifying stories, I couldn't help but fall just a bit more in love with:

Heather Miller's - "The Far Field". A tale of old horror, classic and beautiful just like my grandmother used to tell them. Best enjoyed by candlelight at night.

James, G. Carlson's - "Flesh and Chocolate".
Halloween night in the 90s, so many memories evoked by this story. Scary and hauntingly good.

Diana Olney - "Hell Hath No Fury". Who knew a bouquet of flowers could cause so much dread and at the same time make me wanna smoke a Lucky Strike, 7 years after quitting. Shocking and beautiful.

This anthology is definitely one of my highlights for the year and one I will recommend relentlessly to my fellow readers. It will be available for you to sink your fangs into, on October the 8th.

These Lingering Shadows is an eerie compilation of gothic horror stories. This anthology is a fantastic mix of what goes bump in the night! Fifteen short stories take us down dark paths to creepiness. All of the stories are fantastic, but I had a few favorites along the way.

“The Far Field” by Heather Miller is a gripping story about love with a keen showing of the emotional pull on one’s heart strings. I was quickly invested in the main character and rooted for her til the end.

“Behold, Death Arrives, A Duet of Ash and Fang” by Jae Mazer is a riveting tale of loyalty and duty in a time where witches were put to death. It is beautifully written, full of suspense and revenge. I definitely need to find more stories by Jae Mazer!

“A Halloween Ghost Story” by Christy Aldridge is a fun tale about a teenager who has to stay home and the legend of the mysterious trick or treater that must have candy on Halloween..or else! I really enjoyed reading this one.

“The Dare” by Tony Evans is about a dare from the neighborhood kids to the newcomer in town to go into the local haunted house for a look around. This one is twisted and had me surprised at the end.

“Belladonna’s Curse” by Danielle Manx is a clever story about a witch who must do what she can to survive. This story had me on the edge of my chair the entire time I read it.

“Devlin’s Manse” by Daemon Manx is a story about a mansion that holds many secrets. It’s undergoing renovations and something is stirring within.

“Flesh and Chocolate” by James G. Carlson is a chilling tale of a boy who goes out trick or treating with his older brother and friends. He gets lost in the woods and comes upon an unexpected being who will entertain quid pro quo. I loved this story so much. This too had me invested in the main character and rooting for him the whole story.

Lastly, “A Dream of Dead Leaves” by Jeremy Megargee is a sad tale of a woman who lost her sister and how she copes with loss as she remembers her fondly and hopes to be close to her sister again.

All of the stories were wonderfully creepy, but these mentioned stood out to me and I really enjoyed them! Grab your copy and see just how good this book is!

‘Haunted by memory, by guilt or simply by fear?’ – Fifteen eerie tales to explore

Author Daemon Manx lives a fascinating life and has a true gift for writing short stories in the genres of horror, supernatural, suspense, and speculative fiction. His works appear in anthologies, in his own standalone short stories, and in books co-authored with other writers – such as his latest compiled anthology LINGERING SHADOWS, honoring fourteen colleagues in horror along with his own short story, published by Last Waltz Publishing. Referencing the title, ‘gothic’ is defined as something that is characterized by mystery, horror, and gloom – for those uncertain of the term…

The tone of this satisfying anthology of some of the most terrifying horror stories by fifteen authors’ sets of eyes and minds is darkly set by a quote by Mikhael Bulgakov – ‘What would your good do if evil didn’t exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared?’ Daemon Manx et al offer gothic horror tales, stories of murder, death, after-death, haunting, curses, deception, mythical creatures, macabre places and events that coincide to leave us breathless – and while the presentations are offered in contemporary terms at times, adding erotica and conversations that feel immediate, the overall effect is one of sheer magistery of the genre of terror tales. They conjure memories of nightmares, darkened rooms, hidden spaces defying entry – everything that stimulates shudders and simulates dyspneic gasps. These fifteen immensely creative and concocted stories set just the right tone for this autumnal Halloween season!
