Duels rage around Battle city as fish monsters, sea serpents, and dark beasts of the underworld are unleashed from their decks! First Jonouchi fights Ryota Kajiki, Duelist of the Sea, on his home turf at the Domino City Aquarium! Then Marik's henchmen, the Rare Hunters, force Kaiba and Yugi into a tag-team duel on top of a skyscraper! Can the two arch-rivals work together... or will they fall to their deaths 12 floors below?
Takahashi (高橋和希) started as a mangaka in 1982. His first work was Tokiō no Tsuma (闘輝王の鷹), published in 1990. One of his earliest works was Tennenshokudanji Buray (天然色男児BURAY), which lasted for two volumes and was published from 1991 to 1992. Takahashi did not find success until 1996 when he created Yu-Gi-Oh!
There's another tag team match that goes much more in depth than simply Kaiba winning with OP card. Not nearly as good as the last volume but not as bad as some.
Favorite card this time around: Alpha the Magnet Warrior.
Jonouchi’s duels generally irritate me as they are so low key compared to the duels of Yugi and Kaiba etc. This one was no different but this time it was even more annoying as it was divided up with what was happening to Marik and Bakura which was what I really wanted to find out about. So the duel quickly became boring for me as I know the outcome and wanted to get back to the story (read: Marik/Bakura). I resorted to reading the lines of each character out loud in funny voices, which made me realise just how hard it is to work out which of the characters is speaking at times. There is also some almost narrator-type pieces that are not immediately obvious which describe what is happening.
Not quite at the level of the previous volume in my opinion, but still good. I'm getting a bit confused by the fact that it looks like characters keep responding to each other's thoughts (it's been happening for a few volumes) but I can't find any indication online of other people getting confused by this so maybe I'm just missing something. But as that's more to do with the art (or just my perception?) than the writing/story it's not such a huge deal.
It's been a while since I've read anything from this series, but I enjoyed this one nonetheless. Even if you've seen the English dub of the anime, you should try these out.
The combined effect of this book taken itself too seriously and it being a bit dumb makes this a no fun read.
This was a rather tedious read. None of the signature humor is here, and the book is poorer for it. Kaiba especially seemed to have dropped several intelligence points. Also a lot of the action is makes no in-universe sense. There being a penalty for loosing makes no sense outside of a proper "Penalty game", and just makes you wonder why they don't just shoot Yugi.
What saves the book? The battles are good, well thought out and have strategic merit. This is a big upgrade from Duelist Kingdom. The monsters in this volume also gives the art are time to shine, and who does it shine! The designs are amazing. Yami Bakura and Marik have amazing chemistry as villains, and Marik just pretending to be some dude improves his insidiousness
If there is a slump in the Battle City storyline it is Vol. 14: Double Trouble. This collection primarily revolves around two duels; Jounouchi vs Ryota while Kaiba & Yugi take on the Masked Duo rare hunters. There is also intrigue as Marik and Yami Bakura team-up. Jonouchi's duel is decent but there isn't many surprises and it unfortunately is quite predictable. The dynamic of Kaiba and Yugi being forced to duel together is the highlight of this volume. The rivals have fun banter, some cool combos, and the Masked Duo have a very interesting and powerful deck designed to take on the Egyptian god cards.
Overall this volume may not be as exciting as others in the first half, but the second will keep you turning the pages until the cliffhanger ending.
This volume was great. I didn't expect Kaiba and Yugi to team up in a duel but it's going great, and I feel like they're going to win cause if they don't the roof will be destroyed and they will most likely die. The god cards are insane and I can't believe Bakura he's definitely crazy. It seems like Yugi keeps improving his deck which is good anyway talk soon .

Boooooooo. Finish the duel you cowards. Joey duels Mako and it takes up 3/4 of the volume? Ehhhh. Plus Joey forgot to remove insect parasite? Geez. Cmon man.
This volume, while still fun, verged on annoying. We see the finale of the Jonouchi/Ryota duel in the aquarium. I think the end of this duel really showed so much character progression for Jonouchi, there was a moment when he felt like he just couldn't go on and pulls through without anyone holding his hand...just with his own will power was he able to turn this duel around. Then...there's the double-duel. Kaiba and Yugi must team-up to take down two of Marik's Rare Hunters. Of course, Kaiba is pumped to use Obelisk to obliterate the duo quickly and than hopefully take Yugi out himself. Yugi just wants this to be over so he can find Jonouchi before Marik does. It was obnoxious that Kaiba literally hasn't learned anything...even after his soul was crushed in Death-T, not after being captured by Pegasus...he's still arrogant and hard-headed. I wasn't buying that he was this great duelist when he literally had zero strategy. Yugi kept yelling dumb lines about unity that sounded like an after-school special and Kaiba was amazed when working together actually worked. This volume was rather silly with the "Mask" Deck that seemed to be unbeatable to two master duelists. Oh yeah, and Bakura and Marik scheme and kidnap Anzu and Jonouchi cause they're DUMB. Hoping the next volume gets it's wits back.
