Jack is back, and this time it is more serious! There has been a murder in the five streets, with the body of one of Azrael’s spies discovered with a Number 1 placed beneath the body. It’s up to Jack to figure out what is going on, who is responsible and why? The body leads Jack to the sewers, where Jack meets some unlikely allies, finds a new animal forced to carry out wicked deeds, and prepares to fight for the Five Streets once again.
Meanwhile the humans are struggling with a dangerous virus that has kept them in isolation, MooMoo is (secretly) overwhelmed by the attention she is given, and has told Jack not to come too close to her home. Gina remains unselfish, Churchill is loyal as ever, the fox returns, and this story introduces some new and interesting characters.
I’m a big fan of Jack the Cat and nothing this year has come close to the first book, except for this one. I cried at the ending and enjoyed the subtle moments which occur all the way through. This is a lovely story of repentance, redemption, new friendships and old enemies. It looks at loyalty and betrayal, the voices which haunt us and the bonds we share with the ones we love. The intrigue, compassion and delight of the first story is still here, but this story takes us deeper into the world within the five streets and the animals who live beyond it.
The ending reveals that there will be another story and I am thrilled! I still want to find out more about The Grey. Who might he be? What is his motive for trying to take over the Five Streets? How will Jack respond? Will Jack and Moo Moo have a future together? I can’t wait to find out. In the meantime, I recommended this very special book for anyone looking for a subtle, moving and very unique story. Long May Jack continue to protect the Five Streets!
If you haven’t read the first story, this one can be read alone, but you’ll enjoy that one too.
Princess Fuzzypants here: It took me a while to get into the book. I think the fact that it was the second instalment of a series that I had not read played a part. I had to orientate myself with the characters and the feel of the story. I also found myself miffed a bit by some of the text. It seemed there were better words that could have been used from time to time to describe something. The words used was close but just a tad off but by the time I got drawn into the story, I could have cared less.
When I was caught it was by the scruff of the neck and it did not let go. I got so involved in the story that I was disappointed by the cliffhangers at the end of the book. Clearly there is a third book that will clarify some of the loose ends but it did also finish with an intriguing reunion. I am not going to tell more because I want you to have the fun of discovering it all on your own.
I enjoyed how our recent times of the Pandemic were woven into the tale and how the cat society and the rat society were introduced to each other and how they had to walk a tightrope towards understanding. Humans could benefit from their wisdom. The murder took place in the rat community. At first even Jack is not sure how culpable the rats might be. But together, gingerly, they explored their competing needs and found common ground. Together they find the killer. But even with his demise, the threat is still looming large as ever. I am looking forward to seeing where this all goes.
The idea of a cat solving mysteries was something that appealed to me. I sometimes like stories that are told from the perspective of an animal, so I was hoping that this would be a fun book.
I thought this was a sweet story - fun, entertaining and quirky. It had a kind of simplicity and light-hearted tone that I found endearing, and it made me smile.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.
I think there's a lot of potential and the characters are lovely. Some more editing would help as the plot flows. I give it 4 stars as I loved Jack. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
An enjoyable book that I can see especially appealing to kids. In some parts I thought the writing was a little awkward and there was too much repetition for my liking but overall not a bad read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest opinion.
I have enjoy reading both books. I'll wait for the third novel with bithed breath. I can't wait to find out about Jack and MooMoo meeting in person. Also will happen with the sewer and the other 🐈 cats.
I reviewed Jack the Cat for Reedsy and it has to be the book of the year for me, which is saying a lot because there have been some breathtaking books this year!
