Hope Island #1

Deck the Headlines

Rate this book
She swore she’d never go back to her hometown. He can’t get enough of its wacky charm. Thrown together chasing headlines, will the sparks flying between them turn into love?

Recently graduated journalist Ella Danforth is right where she wants to be…FAR away from her hometown of Hope Island, WA. But in a single morning, she loses everything. Before sundown she finds herself home for the first time in four years to reluctantly take up the recently (and mysteriously) available post of Editor in Chief for the local paper: The Hope Hornblower.

And who does she find in her way? Cal Dickson, a jaded New Yorker fleeing a billionaire merger marriage back home and hoping to get the top job himself. The sparks turn to flames as they’re forced together to tackle the “Hellidays”: a month-long smorgasbord of wacky, holiday events designed to titillate tourists ranging from midnight fruitcake fights to a semi-erotic holiday cookie decorating contests complete with themed mimosas!

Each day they get closer to Christmas Eve, the temperature keeps rising. But will their mutually painful pasts conspire to douse the flames of love?

Deck the Headlines is a small town enemies-to-lovers holiday romantic comedy with new adult aged, nerdy MCs that will have you laughing out loud, tearing up, and always wanting more from this hilarious, island community.

This extended length third person novel contains profanity and is not a clean romance. It is a plot-focused, emotional slowburn HEA with realistic characters and no instalove. The MMC is a green flag / cinnamon roll hero. While part of the Hope Island Holiday Romance series, it can be read as a stand alone, and has no cliffhanger.

Join the wacky residents of Hope Island today and dive into this first book in the Hope Island Holiday Romances.

Bah Humbug! Try as I might, this one just didn't give me the holiday feels. I wasn't a fan of either of the main characters. There was an outrageous amount of needless skip, hop, and jump from one subject to the next. Although there is humor -- it was just too much ridiculousness mixed in. I finished up thankful I hadn't thrown my Kindle across the room. Frustrating to say the least.

A sweet romantic holiday romance!!

In Deck the Headlines, we meet Ella and Cal and sparks fly immediately!! But let me back track for a minute. Ella is a recent college graduate who was trying to make a name for herself in the journalism world of Seattle, unfortunately journalism is a competitive field. Luckily though just as Ella’s day is spiraling into a dumpster fire, her mom lets her know that the local paper back home is hiring an chief editor and she’s a perfect match for the job. Ella is torn though because while some people may love a small town, Ella took the chance to escape the second she saw the opportunity… with finances on the low though and no where else to go it looks like Ella is moving back to Hope Island. And that is where we are introduced to Cal, who’s been on the island escaping mainland life for 6 months, now you may be asking what is he escaping from? Well you’ll have to read to find out as this is a spoiler free review 😉. But when Ella descends upon the island she thinks she’s doing Cal a favor where he sees her as being pushy and ruining his story… that’s right folks Cal and Ella are working for the same newspaper, and when I said sparks flew immediately, well I was telling the truth just maybe not the best kinda sparks. As they continue to work together, and by work together I mean try to outdo each other in stories, they become entrenched in an island mystery that’ll take the two of them working together to solve. And that my dear friends is where I leave you!! If you’re looking for a fun enemies to lovers, small town, Christmas romance then look no further because Deck the Headlines is the book for you!!

HAPPY READING!! 📖

I was so lucky to receive and ARC of Deck the Headlines and boy did it put me right in the Christmas Spirit!! This 4.5 star read by Teagan Hart brings me right into small town (island) Christmas and Ella and Cal’s story was just so good.

After a series of unfortunate events, Ella moves back home to Hope Island to take over as editor for their local paper during the “Hellidays” aka Christmas season where she initially butts heads with NY transplant and new hire Cal, who was hoping for that editor position. Between pranks between these two and an eventual camaraderie with trying to figure out why the previous editor require, they begin to grow close. I was so obsessed with watching their relationship grow and couldn’t put this book down.

Hope Island is full of wacky residents and endearing characters and it was such a joy reading about them in addition to Ella and Cal. I loved this book so much and can’t wait for the next book in the series!!

Deck the Headlines by Teagan Hart
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC for Teagan Hart’s debut novel Deck the Headlines ahead of the release on November 1st, but the only expectation of me is to give an honest review.

In Deck the Headlines we meet Cal and Ella. Ella took her opportunity to escape Hope Island as quickly as she could when she graduated high school, but lands back home after her life careens sideways one surprising morning. Home in Hope she encounters Cal a new comer to the island whose fallen for the sense of community and quirky charm Hope exudes. He’s running from a future he doesn’t know how to completely disentangle from and being in Hope feels right. The pair are already at odds with their view’s on Hope Island, it’s traditions and quirkiness, but to pile on Ella steps into the editor position Cal had hoped to snag for himself. However it doesn’t take long for things to thaw and sparks to fly as they face off against Hope Island’s “Hellidays” together.

I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more by Teagan.

If you love small town holiday romance, with an enemies to lovers vibe, and a twist of cozy mystery run to preorder Deck the Headlines by Teagan Hart now so it can hit your shelf November 1st!

Mystery, quirky town, quirkier townsfolk, Hellidays, hi jinks, simmering heat, and Christmastime, what more could you ask for in a holiday romance?

Ella trying to find out where she fits in. Wanting so much more than where she grew up. Then having to go back to where she swore she’d never go. Yup, she’s going back until her ship (ferry) comes in. This is her current life and she’s not happy.

Cal running away from what he was always told he had to be. Wanting a different, more simplistic life. He thought he found it until Ella enters back to her old stomping grounds.

From here all the Hellidays break loose and the mayhem ensues! Let the hijinks begin!

I don’t do spoilers. It’s not fair to the author or the reader. I will say you get a lot of smiles, laughs, pinches in your heart, swoon moments and even some mystery.

This is the author’s first book and it didn’t disappoint. I am looking forward to her next book.

Deck the Headlines: A Small Town Enemies to Lovers Romantic Comedy by Teagan Hart

4.5 stars

Do you love Hallmark Holiday Movie Marathons?

If so, Teagan Hart will thrill you with her debut novel, Deck the Headlines, the first of six planned holiday novels set on the fictional Hope Island. In it, Hart introduces readers to this madcap community of quirky characters that make up her cast.

A well-written, subtle slow-burn romance with a side of mystery and suspense, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, Deck isn’t a quick read—coming in at around 550 jam-packed pages, an impressive feat for a debut author.

Hart’s second (Sleigh Ride or Die) and third (A Christmas Carol) novels are now available.

I received this book as an ARC and was thoroughly happy with it. The story is about Ella Danforth who loses her job and boyfriend on the same day and moves home to an island off Washington State just in time for Christmas. She is not looking forward to this and dreads it. I enjoyed this book so much. The main characters Ella and Cal made my laugh. The side characters and local town folks were also very funny and the activities the town participated in 'Turkey Bowling' and 'Blowing of the Horn', well I for one was excited to visit this town. I'm looking forward to more from Ms. Hart and will most definitely be picking up the others in this series. If your looking for snarky inner monologue, crazy Christmas shenanigans, small town feels, laughter and love then give this book/series a read

ALRIGHT.
Need to mention why I DNF after the first chapter.

The FMC referred to the "confident, self assured" voice in her head as Helga. Then proceeded to use that in a third person speaking dynamic to tell her what to do next. ALSO, for her "sarcastic" head voice, it was named, "Sarcastic El" (the FMC's name is Ella).

I think the point was to be witty or something adjacent, but using both of those that often in one chapter did not bode well for the rest of the story.

I truly did like the FMC (besides this aspect) and the general set up for the plot. There was no way I could get past the voices dynamic and how much they had already appeared.

I'd like to try another book by this author because I'm curious if this is an across the board thing.

A sweet story between people who are trying to reinvent themselves. The highlight is definitely the charming town with its wildly over the top holiday activities. It really makes you want to go there and live that small town life.

I was at first intrigued with the side mystery but as the story dragged on it just seemed like a distraction. I wish that time had been more focused on the romance which felt a bit all of a sudden.

Overall a quick fun holiday read, would reccomend as an ebook buy.

I read this for the 2023 52 Books Challenge prompt #38 "enemies-to-lovers plot". This is a cute enough romance with a couple of nice protagonists, although the "enemies" part didn't last long, with more time fighting off the attraction. The location is an island off the Washington State coast which is chock full of crazy but loveable people who love their equally crazy Christmas season traditions. And the setting is the local newspaper office where both would like to be in charge. 3.5 stars

I've been one of the lucky ones to receive an ARC of "Deck the headlines", and well... I really enjoyed reading it.
The story is well written, it has some surprises and twists along the way and there is no way you wouldn't connect with the characters.
It remind us the feeling of "being home", even when we consciously don't know were home is.
It made me laugh and cry. It made me hope!
I'll be looking forward to Taegan Hart's neste books, that's for sure.

Ella doesn’t want to go home, but a series of unfortunate events and a coincidental job opportunity takes her there. It also takes the job that Cal wanted, because unlike Ella he loves Hope Island. And he doesn’t want to go home either…

This is a debut novel, and there are plenty of good things about it. There are some lovely deft turns of phrase, sharp dialogue and excellent characterisation (have to admit I became quite the fan of Helga). There’s a lot going on though, and it has the feel of a fully-developed story that the author wanted to tell in its entirety, every single little bit of it - that’s completely understandable, but some of the exposition and description would definitely benefit from the Less Is More adage. With some books that fall into this trap, I’d skim or not finish at all, but in this case, there is quality as well as quantity. I’d be very interested to see how this author develops and what comes next.

Thanks to the author for the advance review copy. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.

Once in a while you run across a new author that you know was made to write. Teagan Hart is that author! From start to finish this was one of the best rom/coms that I’ve ever read. Teagan’s imagination and her personality really show through in Deck The Headlines. If you’re looking for a spicy book this is not it. But if you want a laugh your butt off book then this book is for you. Her characters are fantastic. The town that she created was amazing. I’m not sure how she came up with all of the zany things that they did in that town, but it made you want to visit to see them in person. Deck The Headlines is Teagan’s first romance novel and she hit it out of the park! I can’t wait to see what else they get up to in Sleigh Ride Or Die but I’m positive that it will be just as good as Deck The Headlines. Great job Teagan 👏👏👏

Gosh, what a great read!

Ella’s a recent college grad who hasn’t secured a job in her journalism field. At the beginning of the story, she’s living in Seattle, but things go off course in the blink of an eye and she finds she has no choice but to return to her hometown, Hope Island, to follow an opportunity with the Hope Hornblower.

Cal is a reporter at the Hornblower, he’s a handsome fellow, and he also wants the position Ella is interviewing for.

There’s a whole case of amazing, quirky townspeople, family members, etc, that live in Hope Island, they make this story fun to read, along with the sparks flying between Ella and Cal. There is a little mystery in this book too, that you’ll enjoy!

My review: 5/5 star!

I really enjoyed Cal and Ella’s love story. This is an enemies to lovers, trying to escape the life you were born into with a side of mystery romance. Ella recently graduated from college with a degree in journalism and her plan is to stay in Seattle with her live in boyfriend. But when all aspects of her life (romantic, career, and home) implode she does the unthinkable and moves back home to tiny Hope Island to live with her parents and work as the editor for the local paper. Cal escaped, at least temporarily, the elitist life in New York he hated five months ago to move to Hope Island and work as a reporter. When the current editor quits unexpectedly, Cal is surprised when Ella is hired instead of him. There is instant animosity between Ella and Cal but there’s also sizzling chemistry. As Cal and Ella journey to their HEA, there are sweet moments, light steam, strong friendships, real life issues, imperfect characters, laugh out loud moments, painful pasts, quirky townspeople, absurd holiday festivals, lots of internal angst, and all the love. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. The beginning and the ending gave me all the feels. My only issue with the story is that it was way too long. The middle was filled with funny anecdotes of the quirky town and their ridiculous Christmas “Hellidays” traditions but the majority of the scenes did not move the main story along. Unfortunately, as a result the story dragged in the middle. Despite the issue with the length and extraneous scenes, I loved the story and the writing. I will definitely be reading more from this author. I willingly reviewed an early copy of this book.

Cal Dickson comes to Hope Island because he wants to get away from his family and their obligations in New York City. Ella hopes never to come back to Hope Island, but has to when she catches her boyfriend in bed with her best friend, has no place to live, and can’t find a job. When her mother tells her the editor’s job is available in her hometown, she decides to come home and take it until she can figure out what to do next. What Ella didn’t plan on was the connection she and Cal would have from the very beginning. I loved this slow burn story that kept me reading most of the night! I can’t wait for Teagan Hart’s next book!

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for posting reviews. This book is a solid offering in the sweet and funny romance category. To the best of my knowledge, this is the author's first or second officially published book and it's impressive, taking that into account. I think it could be tightened up in terms of the pacing and the characters could be developed more deeply, to bump this into the four or five star category on my rating scale. However, the writing is good, the world building is engaging and the completely zany situations the characters find themselves in feel organic and natural and hilarious. Teagan Hart is an author to watch, especially if you like your romance with sweet instead of heat.

Oh Ella.. So to be completely honest this story felt a slight bit wordy. But all those words have a purpose. This book gave such great descriptions of the places, the people, the many many events of the town and the interactions between them. Ella's move home was temporary. Life has a funny way of showing you that you aren't always in charge. Plans change and so do people. Hope Island is home and it carries a so much weight but in the end is carries so many memories, both fond and the not so fond. This is a story you won't easily forget but you'll sure miss when the story is over. I can't wait to read the next Hope Island book.

This is a cute story about two people finding each other at just the right time. Ella begrudgingly heads back to her quirky hometown to stay with family after experiencing some major (relatable) let downs. Cal runs away from a life that others are designing for him and finds himself (literally and figuratively) on Hope Island. They butt heads as boss v. employee and native islander v. foreigner and still end up working to solve a small-town mystery.

If you love witty humor and enjoyed comedic banter of Gilmore Girls, this book is for you!

⭐️Thank you, Teagan Hart for the ARC! I had fun with these characters ❤️

This was a cute and funny romance based on a small island filled with some very great characters. The side stories and mystery were well written, and interesting. To be honest, this book was a bit wordy. The love story got a little lost, and while I enjoyed the details about the town, I feel like it and ALL the extra characters distracted me from Cal and Ella's story. I would definitely consider reading more stories from Hope.
