With both parents avid readers, it's no surprise that Amanda Cabot learned to read at an early age. From there it was only a small step to deciding to become a writer. Of course, deciding and becoming are two different things, as she soon discovered. Fortunately for the world, her first attempts at fiction were not published, but she did meet her goal of selling a novel by her thirtieth birthday. Since then she’s sold more than forty novels. When she’s not writing, Amanda enjoys sewing, cooking and – of course – reading.

Amanda Cabot starts a new series with this book. She has placed her characters in the small town of Sweetwater Crossing in the state of Texas. This author is well known for her historical romances and in After the Shadows she takes her readers back to August 19 1882. I loved this book and it kept me up late so I could finish it last night. Amanda has blended in a mystery that kept me guessing into the wee hours of the morning. I found this book to be unpredictable and I loved the characters that came to life in the story. Historical Fiction is a pleasant break from my usual genres and I love to be transported back in time to these frontier days . The mystery part of the book kept me glued to the pages and I found myself carried away into 1882. The ending was a shocker when the mystery is solved but it is also a beautiful ending that didn’t leave me up in the air.

I recommend this book to readers of Historical Fiction and to fans of Amanda Cabot. This is the first book of Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series. This is a clean historical romance .

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

A solid start to the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series!

Both Emily and Craig were well-developed characters who grew throughout the book. Emily was a sweet lady who went through a lot of hard times. I did think her lack of grief after everything was a little unrealistic, but I suppose that was to keep the book from becoming too heavy. Craig was also a very kind and considerate character, but I wasn't at all a fan of his anti-spanking mentality and disdain for teaching facts.

The mystery added a good bit of intrigue to the plot. I appreciated that Amanda Cabot kept Craig and Emily's romance, as well as the language, clean.

Overall, After the Shadows was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and historical romance.

1880s Texas Hill Country. The beginning of a new series, about three sisters, starts with Emily the oldest. When her abusive husband dies she returns home, but what awaits her is not the welcome or the comfort she had imagined, first, she discovers her father has died under mysterious circumstances, one sister is out of the country, and then her youngest sister Louisa leaves home when the two do not agree on turning their home into a boarding house. A lot is coming at you in the first few pages, making this book hard to put down. Love Emily and Graig are sweet and caring but determined to escape the shadows of the past to a brighter future.

This was a sweet romance with an honorable heroine and hero, A beautiful telling of what life can be like when grieving. I loved the mystery that was entailed, it had me guessing almost toward the end.

Clean read, There was no sex or foul language, only kissing. The Christian elements are how people are treated one another, and trust God's timing. A subtle reference to spousal abuse is essential yet carefully handled.

A great historical romance, it gripped my attention. I am anxiously waiting for the second book in this series!

I highly recommend After the Shadows to everyone who enjoys reading delightfully written historical fiction, mystery, and romance!

Sweet historical romance set in Texas with an exciting mystery and incredible characters

From the bluebonnets on the cover to the very last page, I enjoyed escaping into the sweet story held within the pages of Amanda Cabot’s After the Shadows. I loved the complicated characters. I loved watching the mystery unfold as the villain was revealed in a delightful scene at the end. The scene where the love interest’s son and the girl with down syndrome reading together was my absolute favorite!!!!!

Emily is glad to come home, but home is not quite like she remembered. Her father is dead, possibly murdered. A house was burned to the ground. Her sister leaves because of Emily’s attempt to keep from leaving the house. Despite these challenges, Emily is determined not to give into her fears. I admire Emily’s courage as she faces all of the obstacles life throws at her. I love how she is willing to do anything to restore her father’s name to good standing. Emily’s desire to make everyone feel welcome, regardless of societal standing or disability, was an inspiration.

Craig wants to give his young son a good life. He works as a teacher to make ends meet and refuses to cave to the opinions of others as to how he should run his classroom. Craig’s strong moral compass was the best thing about his character. He was not willing to cave to pressure, and I LOVED IT!!! It was also sweet seeing him interact with his son and the girl with down syndrome (I think) who Emily takes under her wing. It was sweet seeing how protective he is of everyone around him.

1882 Texas

The start of a new series set in the Texas Hill Country delivers a sweet historical romance with a mystery added in.

Emily Leland returns to Sweetwater Crossing following a brief and miserable marriage. She looks forward to returning to the comfort of her family only to find nothing is as she left it a year prior. As the oldest daughter, Emily takes charge and forges ahead making the best decisions she can.

New schoolmaster Craig is new to Sweetwater Crossing. He and his young son Noah left their memories behind in Galveston looking for a fresh start.

Emily showed great character growth and resilience throughout the novel. Craig's new ways of teaching were fresh air for the community.

And the mystery...Emily doesn't believe her father committed suicide, but proving that is a steep climb.

Children Noah and Belulah were both great additions to the novel. I look forward to the next in the series. Lovely cover.

My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed were my own.

If you enjoy Little House on the Prairie and Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman then I think you would enjoy this story. I would even say When Calls the Heart.

I really came to care for Emily. She has dealt with some awful things in a very short period of time. One of the most horrible is abuse from her husband. Emily has a gentle and kind spirit who cares for the people of Sweetwater Crossing. Amidst all of the tragedy around her, she keeps a cool head and a welcoming heart.

She walks into a hornet's nest when she returns home and sees her youngest sister, Louisa. Louisa has had to deal with a LOT and to say she's disgruntled would be putting it mildly. The choices Emily is forced to make don't go well with Louisa to say the least.

Then we meet the next main characters of Craig and his toddler son, Noah. Let's just put it out there right now that Noah is absolutely adorable! Craig, himself, has lived through the tragedy of losing his wife and is hoping to start over in this new town. As a teacher he certainly has his challenges with the bullies in the classroom. I loved how the author used him as an example of handling hard situations with logic and not corporal punishment.

Things get pretty strange almost immediately. People of the town start dropping like flies. The odd thing is, no one questions it. They're just seen as "being old". It was rather surprising that no one wondered what might be going on in this little town. That is until Craig comes alongside Emily to help her figure things out.

While the story was nice, it was also a bit hard for me to get fully into it. Some of the characters were a bit over-the-top with their behaviors. And some moments were very jarring with behaviors and not quite understanding what was going on with the side stories. Like I mentioned, people were dropping like flies. There was a family who showed up in town temporarily and they reminded me of Nels, Harriet, and Nellie Olsen from LHotP. I didn't understand the point of them being in the story. Also, Emily's family has been in the town for a long time and seem like they were loved, but much of the townspeople treat Emily poorly. Like when Alice, her best friend, shows up towards the end of the story accusing her of something - just out of the blue. Same with the former teacher. It's like they're really mean and angry and then they're best of buddies. It was hard to get super invested in those moments.

One part of the story that I absolutely loved was Beulah. She has Down syndrome and the way the author handles her and those who rally around her is wonderful! Beulah is a very real-feeling character. I could completely imagine how those in the town wouldn't want her to be around the other school children. How the author used Emily and Craig in her life just put a smile on my face throughout!

Louisa's story comes next and I certainly hope she softens throughout the next story so that she's more appealing as a main character. Of course, I hope she isn't magically sweet and kind, but goes through a growth in her own life.

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Within the first few pages, new-to-me author Amanda Cabot captured my attention with her beautiful story about second chances and family relationships. She quickly placed me in the Texas Hill Country and kept me rooting for Emily Leland and Craig Ferguson.

Both the main characters are struggling with loss and abandonment, fearful at grasping second chances. Craig has come to Sweetwater Crossing expecting a peaceful town where he can move forward and heal with his son, Noah. Emily has also returned looking for peace and comfort after abandoning her dreams and experiencing loss. Both characters learn that God only gives us what we can handle and oftentimes, it looks nothing like what we’d imagine.

Cabot’s focus on living each moment to the fullest comes across loud and clear and is encouraging for those of us who’ve become complacent. Her reminders about memories being a gift and her caution about blaming ourselves and trusting God were timely. I appreciated her outlook on Ruth’s situation (in the bible) and the value of a second chance in her situation as well as her outlook on funerals and how they’re meant to give loved ones strength to continue living. I’d never heard of Sunday Houses before and was quite intrigued!

I loved being immersed in the family dynamics of this blended family and the sweet developing romance between two individuals who continually chose to put the needs of others first. I can’t wait for Louisa and Josh’s story next.

I was excited to discover that this first book in the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing was free on Kobo!

This story drew me in from the very first. I felt for Emily . . . for the pain she had felt in her marriage, and now at the traumatic events that she was facing from her very first day back home in Sweetwater Crossing. But I really liked that she was determined to make the best of trying circumstances and be a blessing to those around her.
I really liked Craig (and Noah!) as well. Craig wanted to be the best father he possibly could, and uprooted his own life to try and help Noah to heal from the trauma he experienced when his mother died.
I liked how Emily and Craig's relationship grew naturally from the circumstances they were in, and over an extended period of time.
I will say that though I had figured out 'whodunnit' with regards to Pastor Vaughn's death before the reveal, I didn't ever figure out a clear motive until the reveal, which made for a lot of 'am I even RIGHT?' going on in my mind.
I look forward to reading Louisa's story next!

This first book in a new series was a great introduction to the setting of Sweetwater Crossing, all the small-town folks and giving a background for the three sisters.

I enjoyed watching the growth of Emily and learning to trust again. Emily was also a perfect example of someone not seeing their true worth like the people around them which they are impacting. I also loved Craig and his struggle to break the mold of what school and discipline should be to what I can be.

Noah and Beulah were great kiddies which brought fun and lightness to the story.

I did guess who might be behind everything going on at Sweetwater Crossing and was waiting patiently for Emily to connect the dots.

I do plan to continue this series.

This was a sweet story of new beginnings and second chances after great loss.

After the Shadows is so much more than I expected. It’s a coming home story with lots of twists, elements of mystery, sweet romance, and a search for answers.

I love a starting-over and coming-home story, so I knew I’d enjoy this read, but I was surprised at how many threads bound the story together. I love how the characters drew me in quickly and felt so authentic. I also enjoyed the western, historical setting.

Emily and Craig are unique and interesting characters. And despite her fears, Emily begins to grow as she draws closer to him. Their relationship strengthens as they search for answers and begin to heal.

It was fun to visit the boardinghouse and meet the interesting guests and townsfolk. I love that the mystery isn’t expected and keeps me guessing.

First Line: Everything looked the same.

A new historical series has the setting in a small town in Texas. Emily is returning to Sweetwater Crossing after the death of her husband. She is not sorry to come back until she discovers her father has died and her sister does not believe that her husband kept letters from reaching her family. So much happens in one day! The new, widowed school teacher arrives to find his boarding house has burned. Emily offers her family home to Craig, son Noah and Mrs. Carmichael, the landlady without a home. The relationship between Craig and Noah was sweet and showcased a caring involved father.
Ms. Cabot continues her story with mystery, blooming romance and prejudices common to the times and small communities. She brings the characters to life and shows that Christian principles were lived out, as well as illustrates evil to overcome.
I look forward to the next in the series as Louisa, a younger sister, takes center stage.

1880 - Sweetwater Crossing, Texas

Emily returns to her family home after her abusive husband dies in a bar fight. She is not sorry that he died because he kept her away from her family and physically abused her. Her mother had recently died and she went home to mourn with her sisters and father but was met with anger from her sister because of a mean letter that she had supposedly written to the family. Even though she knew that her husband had written it to make her depend on only him and not her family, she had decided not to share the details of her marriage with her sisters. The same day she arrives home, they find their father dead in the barn. There's a big mystery surrounding his death that isn't solved until the very end of the book.

As Emily is getting used to being back home and dealing with the continuing anger from her sister, the new school teacher is on his way to town with his young son Noah. Craig is a widower and a fantastic dad and plans to board with an older widow in town. When her house burns down, Emily proposes that they live in her family home. Because Emily's family has no income, she proposes that the family home become a boarding house.

Even though she is afraid of men due to the abuse from her husband, she and Craig get along well and she enjoys spending time with his son. When she shares her doubts with him about her father's suicide, they start to work together to solve the mystery of what really happened.

This was a very enjoyable light read with some fantastic characters. Emily and Craig were great characters. There was an interesting mystery and a slow moving romance but they ended up with their happily ever after.

This is the first book in a new series by Amanda Cabot and I look forward to the future stories about the people in Sweetwater Crossing

Just finished this wonderful book. It was so good! But anything by this author is good!
I loved the mystery that was entailed into it. This one definitely had me guessing! Cabot has done such a good job with this. She had me guessing almost towards the end of it!
You'll never guess! Wow!
Noah was my favorite character because he had a way of lighting up the room he was in with his giggles and smiles. Made my heart melt.
The one whom I didn't like was Louisa. I thought her rather selfish.
I loved the town of Sweetwater. It felt like "home" to me. I didn't want to leave.
A great read that I highly recommend!
5 stars for a job well done!

Oh, my! This book has everything that I love in a story! History, mystery, a budding romance, and the promise of second chances are all a part of this new book by author Amanda Cabot. After the Shadows is the touching story of two people who bear hurts and scars from previous experiences. Emily believes that she doesn't deserve happiness and Craig is plagued with guilt. How could either one of them ever hope to have another happy or loving relationship?

After the Shadows is the first book in the new Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing and it's whetted my appetite for what's ahead! Cabot's historical details are spot on and she definitely knows how to pull our heartstrings with the emotional impact of this story. She tastefully handles tough subjects such as domestic violence and suicide and reminds us that some tragedies are often unavoidable. This is a riveting story of hope, trust, and learning to let go and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian novels!

After The Shadows is the first book in a new series by Amanda Cabot. It’s also the first book I’ve ever read by this author and it surely will not be my last. The story, set in Texas Hill Country, was full of mystery and intrigue, and of course, love. And the biblical truths through the tale were inspiring. I’m looking forward to continuing this series and I highly recommend this book!!

This read really picked up about halfway through the book for me. The story started off with a bang (or should I say death?)--a seeming suicide within the first chapter or two--and it had me worried what I'd signed up for, as I started reading it right before bed! Heh. From there, though, the plot slowed down quite a bit and it turned very character driven. Fine--especially since the plot did pick up as I went along.

I prefer Cabot's Mesquite Springs trilogy over this one, but I'll still probably pick up book 2 when it releases.

Emily returns to her hometown to find that her father has passed, a string of mysterious events has Emily and the new school teacher asking questions.

An engaging read with a full cast of characters in a small town shrouded in secrets, with a mystery that kept me guessing. Well written with wonderful well developed characters. Emily is a courageous woman, willing to stand up for truth and ask the hard questions. I loved her friendship with little Noah, who is the most adorable little boy!

There is a lot going on in this small Texas town, and I liked the multiple intertwining story threads, as well as the growing friendship between Emily and Craig.

Overall, an entertaining novel, and great start to a new series, with a heroine that I could cheer for all the way through. Definitely great for fans of Western romance, with a streak of mystery!

After the Shadows is the first in a trilogy set in Sweetwater Crossing, Texas. This story is about one of 3 sisters, Emily Leland. I really enjoyed this story including the mystery elements. I was definitely drawn to Emily and Craig and cheered them on throughout the story. Not too impressed with the other 2 sisters yet, but they were only a small part of the story. I look forward to their stories and getting to know them better.

The town of Sweetwater Crossing has some secrets, y’all. (Hence, the name of the series.) And while we discover some of them in After the Shadows, there are definitely hints that more will be revealed in future books. One in particular that I have my suspicions about and I’m dying to know if I’m right. Oops. Bad pun. Because, you see, one of the biggest secrets in Sweetwater Crossing involves several unexplained deaths.

Emily Vaughn Leland returns home to Finley House after the death of her abusive husband George, but she certainly doesn’t receive a welcome. Not only does Emily have to cope with the loss of her mother in her absence, she finds her minister father dead in the barn of a suspected suicide (which she doesn’t believe) the day she arrives. Her middle sister is away in Europe and their youngest sister Louisa is furious at Emily as a result of George’s isolating manipulations. I felt the tension palpably emanating off the pages as Emily is dealt one blow after another, including the need to open their home to boarders or risk losing it. My heart really went out to her, and the more time I spent with her character the more I loved her, her quiet strength, and her compassionate spirit. She may be gifted as a cook, but she’s also gifted at loving people well and making them feel at home.

One of those people is new schoolmaster Craig Ferguson, a widower with the most adorable toddler son – Noah. I loved his approach as a teacher, especially when that was not the norm for the time period, and the fact that he would not be swayed by voices of dissent when he knew something was the right thing to do. In this way, he and Emily are very much alike and clearly the perfect match for one another. Their easy friendship and mutual support of each other made me love both of them even more, and I appreciated how Cabot layers their growing feelings for one another with their understandable caution in starting a new relationship. The moment when Craig realizes he’s in love with Emily, though, is the moment I fell for him as a hero, and it made me grin like a besotted fool at his befuddlement.

Craig and Noah aren’t the only boarders at Emily’s home, and I adored Beulah and Mrs. Carmichael. The latter is a voice of wisdom and friendship for Emily and Craig both, as well as a surrogate grandmother for little Noah, and I really enjoyed getting to know her. Beulah is a young girl with what we now call Down’s Syndrome, a character that we don’t see often in historical romance but one that I can’t imagine After the Shadows without. She was a delightful addition to Finley House and to this story. The less said about some other boarders, the better – but I’m pretty sure that’s exactly how the author intended me to feel.

Bottom Line: After the Shadows is a multifaceted story with a sweet historical romance and a murder mystery undercurrent. It also tugs on the heartstrings and reminds us that beauty will rise out of the painful times in our lives. Sweetwater Crossing isn’t giving up its secrets without a fight though, and in this case it’s a matter of life and death. Emily and Craig are compelling and delightful characters that are easy to love, and their gently swoony romance grows from the warm friendship that first develops between them. It was nice to see references to the author’s previous series, too, and the theme of loving each other as Jesus commanded is timely and meaningful without being preachy. Looking forward to discovering the other secrets that Sweetwater Crossing is keeping!

Applause, Applause, Applause! I feel Ms Cabot has outdone herself with the beginning to Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series. I have been a fan of this author since I read Paper Roses. She takes heavy subject matter and weaves a story of hope and faith amidst it that show’s beauty among the ruins. The mysterious deaths add the element of guessing keep you turning pages to see the outcome. I loved Emily’s compassionate heart for others even in the middle of her own tragedy. One of my favorite characters was the addition of Beulah a child with Down’s syndrome and her thirst for knowledge. Craig was the perfect teacher for her and a shelter in the storm for Emily. Take a step back in time to 1882 and enjoy getting to know the characters of Sweetwater Crossing. The pacing and plot are spot on and will leave you anxiously waiting for the next installment. I highly recommend reading and adding to your keeper shelf.

I loved this introduction to Sweetwater Crossing! I always love Amanda Cabot’s writing and she’s done it yet again with another sweet romance interwoven with mystery. I really loved Emily’s character. She went through so much, but it didn’t stop her from being generous, kind, loving, and gracious to others. Craig was so sweet and I love how he really understood Emily and was patient, yet persistent with her throughout the story. Amanda’s cast of characters are so enjoyable and I love reading the vivid descriptions of her towns! I could easily picture myself walking the streets of Sweetwater Crossing right alongside Emily and Craig and it always adds so much to the story! I can’t wait to see what happens with the rest of this series!

This review by librarian Christine Barth first appeared in the March 2023 issue of Library Journal.

Everything in Emily Leland's life changed when she left Sweetwater Crossing, TX after her wedding one year ago. Her husband and mother have since died, her pastor father has died by suicide, her youngest sister is traveling abroad, and her other sister blames Emily for everything.
Trying to make ends meet while processing a load of grief, Emily opens her family's mansion, Finley House, to a motley collection of boarders. The town's new teacher, Craig Ferguson, and his young son find a haven there.
Craig has radical (for the 1880s) ideas about teaching and classroom discipline, though, and soon earns the ire of the town's mayor. Meanwhile, death continues to stalk Sweetwater Crossing, as many elderly residents pass of seemingly natural causes.
VERDICT: Cabot (The Spark of Love) is becoming a must-buy. Her sensitivity and realistic portrayal of characters often on the margins of history really shine in this new historical series, which includes a child with Down Syndrome, a domestic-abuse survivor, and a family impacted by suicide. Read-alikes can be found in the works of Melanie Dobson, Ann H. Gabhart, and Tamera Alexander.

Heavy on the romance, light on the suspense and intrigue - this inspirational historical read will woo readers. When Emily Leland returns home she discovers not one, but both of her parents are dead. Emily had left the year before when she married George, a dashing man with a hot temper. When she failed to give him a child he quickly turned abusive and when he suddenly died she was not remotely sad. She was just ready to return to her parents home - but now with both parents dead and her sister furious at her; Emily doesn't know what to do. She decides to turn her childhood home into a boardinghouse so she can pay the taxes and soon she is introduced to the dashing new school teacher and his adorable son. He too is a widower and if they aren't careful they might start falling for each other. At the heart of the story is their romance, but in the background is a mystery - how did her father really die and will the new teacher help her get to the bottom of it? The first in a new series!

This is book one in a new series. It’s Emily’s story and her return to Sweetwater Crossing. It has a bit of a mystery surrounding her father’s unexpected death. There’s some romance. It’s a pretty good story. I liked Emily, even after everything that had happened to her she’s still a strong woman. Looking forward to the next one

An excellent start to Amanda’s new series. I enjoyed the mysteries of this story, it was fun trying to figure out how the threads fit. Craig and Noah were adorable and I loved how the relationship between Emily and Craig was a very natural progression. The rest of this series promises to be super fun and I am looking forward to the upcoming stories in the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series.

This was a most interesting book to me. It was a historical fiction book as you can tell from the cover. Emily, a widow of a very abusive man, returns home to Sweetwater Crossing. There she finds herself trying to resolve the mysterious and unexpected death of her pastor father. Craig Ferguson and his young son, Noah come to Sweetwater Crossing as the new schoolmaster. Both of them are kindly people who look out for others. The challenges and events that occur to both them and others causes them to work together to resolve the issues that surround them.
I loved the Texas Hill Country setting as I have a special love for this state and read everything I can that includes this state. It was a good book and a very talented author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own.

A wonderful book! We find Emily Leland returning home to the solace of her family after being away for a year. -- A favorite quote: " ...nothing appeared to have changed, but Emily Leland knew otherwise. Everything had changed, Or perhaps, she had changed." -- And yes, she found things to be very different. Her husband, now deceased, had kept her mother's illness and death from her, one sister was traveling abroad... and her father seemingly committed suicide the day she arrived. Emily knows that her only hope of keeping the large family home is to open it for boarders...never suspecting that she might truly find love. I so enjoyed that, while set in the 1880s, the author embraced the social issues that are still prevalent today: suicide, spouse abuse, acceptance of others.
Of course there is a happy ending for our main character, but there is some heart ache along the way.
