Malcolm Kid and the Perfect Song

Rate this book
Debut writer Austin Paramore and artist Sarah Bollinger ( Girls Have a Blog ) strike a chord in this humorous and heartfelt story about love, loss, legacy, and the music that ties them all together.

What does the perfect song sound like?

Normally, Malcolm Kid wouldn’t give this type of question the time of day. As a straight B-student with a heart of copper, he is far more concerned with overcoming mediocrity than he is with achieving perfection. But that all changes when he stumbles across the LK-2000—a strange keyboard cursed with the soul of an old jazz musician.

Malcolm soon learns that the only way to free this musician’s soul is by performing the perfect song. With much hesitation, and the help of his lifelong friend January Young, Malcolm embarks on a musical journey across the city of New Bronzeville in the hopes of discovering the perfect song and finding himself as a musician along the way.

But when Jubilee's opened up... Man, We finally had something of our own, we could dance, we could drink... We could be happy and black without nobody messing with us, that was special back then, still is...

I received a copy of this Graphic Novel ARC, in exchange for an honest review, Thanks Austin, Sarah, Hassan, Marika, NetGalley for the opportunity.

You have to move on, you can't do nothing but be there for him now, that kinda pain don't just go away, he needs you.

This will come out August 1, 2023, It's a story of the love of music, young people aspirations, friendship, family, passion, and how to keep them everything that is really important to us in focus, to not stray from what really matters...

Austin my man, I know it's your first Graphic novel, But you fit right in, this is your place, keep at it, and it will become your kingdom, The Market is starved for more Graphic novels about African Americans lives, that can be a role model for young people, something they can relate too, something that can inspire them, something that give a great representation, you did all that, and then a little more.

Sarah, Great art, while Austin wrote with a great sense of humor, your art and the people's expressions, was actually more hilarious for me, i was laughing in pages i shouldn't even laugh, Great art, you make Funny become hilarious, the choice of coloring was amazing, it felt modern, it felt that it was suitable for the story, everything was on point, no complaints at all, Unique, which i am always on the lookout for, i didn't read as many Graphic novels as i should, but i don't remember someone i read for had the same style.

It's music, it makes people happy!

The story was about Music, My connection with music is crazy, i never know what song will pop into my mind, things i don't even listen to anymore, i could wake up with a song that haunts me for the rest of the day, playing over and over in my head.
I could whistle a piece of a famous symphony even though i don't even know it's name, i could be reading like on one of the pages here, and a piano intro of a song plays in my mind, as if it's what's being played in the scene, not even sure which song had that intro!
My mind is probably haunted by an old juke box...

I enjoyed this immensely sorry for delaying it, been a little busy lately.
Girl, i was drunk off my ass when i wrote that song, but i know it was damn good, just can't remember the notes.

This is what midnight would look like if he was white, and played the perfect song (Best song in the world) And his name was midday. (Sorry i couldn't insert this song in here, i love it, and it's pretty much what happened with the imprisoned soul of the musician 😆)

This was such a cute story, heartfelt and humorous indeed, with a good character development (particularly if you consider it's been often labeled as a middle grade graphic novel), and some beautiful art.

The tone is a bit cartoonish at times, and the big twist was kind of predictable, but those are just minor complains on this fun and sweet tale about family, friendship, art, and commitment.

An account of a teenage musician who must locate "the perfect song" in order to save the soul of an old fellow musician. The narrative touches on a variety of subjects, like figuring out who you are as you grow up, dealing with family issues, grieving, navigating friendships, etc. However, none of these subjects are covered in great detail, and the dialogue consists primarily of expressions that have been overused and have lost their impact. In addition, I find it hard to believe some of the story's details given the circumstances. The concept was intriguing, but I didn't think the execution worked well.

I don't like how cartoonish the artwork is. A more realistic tone would be better for this kind of narrative.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for providing ARC of this book to reviewers.

5 stars ... with personal thoughts. More like a journal entry rather than a review.

I'm writing this for my future self. When my future self finds myself re-reading my reviews, whenever that time may be because I don't re-read them often, I am giving my future self a moment to say, "Ah yeah, I remember where I was at that time in my life." So here goes...

This 5-star review comes with mixed feelings. I liked the story. It was cute. I laughed a few times. I felt many emotions while reading. And I wanted to finish the story. I was also conflicted by the role the women (girls) played in the story, which was the traditional role of supporting the men (boys). One "part" of me (pulling from another book I recently read) says, "Again! This is always the story. The man has a mission to complete, and the woman has to support him. And her entire role in the story is 'support'. Nothing more. Who else is she besides support?!?" The other part of me says, "But, that's the story. In fact, here you are wanting the woman to show you a certain role (again) just to make you feel better."

Damn. I'm the problem. But I also know that's not true.

Clearly, this story has triggered a series of memories that shaped how I feel about myself, my "place" in the world (if that's even a thing), and the division of male/female that lives within my psychological body (if you'll allow me to use "body" here). I don't feel the need to do anything with or about this conflict. I'm just acknowledging that I feel it. I heard myself cope with this conflict by telling my wife, "I'd like to see a companion book that shows the life of Ary and her relationship to Malcolm from her perspective." But really, I was just saying that to make me feel better. It's another manifestation of the same conflictual concept..."Hey woman. Do a thing, or show me a thing, so I can feel better."

Conditioning is a muhtha!

I can hear one of my reading buddies now saying, "Geez Dr. Woo! Why can't you just let a cute book be a cute book?" lol

- Huge thanks to the author and publisher for approving me a copy of this title through NetGalley -

I'm so happy to have the possibity to read titles I would probably never discover myself.
This one is another hidden gem I'm so glad I was able to find.

The lenght of the book was perfect, there's time to enjoy both the art and the beautiful story.
There is a kinda predictable situation but even guessing it pretty early on during the read, I was able to enjoy anyway seeing how it was drawn throughout the book.

I found the story super cute and it has a big big heart, the read is very smooth but it's very easy to bring to life in your head the drawings.

I only have a more general note: I wasn't a fan of the whole sepia toned colors, the cover is so bright, so when I found inside a whole muted world I was a little disoriented, but that's about it.

This is a story of dreams, family and love.

Wonderful middle grade graphic novel about a young musician who uncovers a magical mystery. It's hilarious at times, deeply moving at others as Malcom's family struggles with the pre-book death of his brother, and nicely blends friendship, family, creative passion, and even a touch of romance. The art is so fresh and fun, then gentle with the characters where that fits. I will definitely be looking for more from Paramore and Bollinger both.

This is such a heartwarming book! I enjoy the well-written character development, engaging narrative, amusing humor, and stunning graphic style. Unfortunately, for me, the plot twist is quite predictable. However, I adore this narrative about passion, adventure, and growth. I definitely want to read another work from this author.

Malcom Kid and The Perfect Song was such a wonderful and inspiring graphic novel.

The novel follows our main character Malcom who is gifted a cursed keyboard and discovers he is being haunted by an old jazz musician. He finds out the only way to free himself and the ghost is to find and play the perfect song. He is joined by a childhood friend, January, and together they adventure around the city, discovering not only the ghost’s history but themselves in the process.

I really enjoyed the story of this one and the focus on Malcom following his dreams of pursing music despite even though he feels like the world is working against him. The artwork was simple and beautiful, and helped the story flow easily from past to present without any confusion.

Overall, this was a quick but heartwarming read and I’m really hoping another volume is in the works, as the final scene seemed to suggest that. I highly recommend this to young teens as well as adult looking for a light read with a touch of magical realism.

Thank you to OniPress and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this graphic novel due for release on the 1st of August 2023.

This was so dang enjoyable! I went in knowing not too much about the plot and I recommend you do, too.

A summary that doesn’t give too much away— Malcolm Kid is down on his luck. He’s a high schooler who just wants to be a musician. His dreams are temporarily dashed when his keyboard gets smashed and his parents grow angry with him. Then, Malcolm and his friend January acquire a new keyboard under ~shady~ circumstances. The two don’t know what they’re in for, and their new possession leads them on a quest around town.

The combination of energetic artwork + silly dialogue was *chef’s kiss.* This comic was just so fun! This story touches on the love of music, complex family dynamics, loss, and gentrification— all with a lot of humor and heart. There are also some cool video game and social media elements. I’ll definitely be on the watch for a sequel!

Recommended if you’re interested in a humorous comic about a young musician that perfectly balances being lighthearted and touching. Out on August 1!

IT WAS TOO SHORT!!
omg as a young, black, musician I loved this story a little bit too much. Okay, it was amazing. I loved Malcolm and his group of friends (Cam mainly lol) and I loved his friendship with Ary. You don't see black rep like this in YA graphic novels so ofc i was eating it up 😚 if black joy were a book, this would be it.

AND THE ART STYLE BRO!! Somehow the monochrome worked for this story and I loved the little ending illustrations and Yung Trav's soundcloud ig 😭😭

Ary and Malcolm's friendship is so well-written and it feels genuine. I do like the themes portrayed throughout the book, and the lesser broad but subtle one about umm contracts :P

but I digress. I loved this story and I'd reccomend it to anyone. side note, this book feels kind of nostalgic, like a 2000's cartoon :)

Thank you so much NetGalley and authors for thr ARC!

This was a great graphic novel. First of all, my ten-year-old devoured it in one sitting and is looking forward to a continuation of the story. I also really enjoyed it. Sometimes a graphic novel can make your feel like you are skipping over parts of the story but this one is super well done. Between the compelling story and the expressive images, lots of nuance and detail are covered in a quick read.

I totally recommend this book and am also looking forward to whatever comes next - it definitely feels like it's being set up for a second book.

This graphic novel just climbed to my top 3 favourites ever!

I am so impressed with everything about it! The cover, the characters, the art sequence, the dialogue delivery, the outstanding side characters, the plot, the chemistry between the main characters, the twist and the ending.

There’s absolutely nothing I can complain about.

Trust me on this one. Go into it blindly. You will be surprised.

CONTENT NOTE: gentrification, family estrangement, death of a loved one

Malcolm Kid and the Perfect Song is a delightful story about pursuing your dreams, friendship, challenging family dynamics, and, of course, breaking magic curses with music and love.

What Worked for Me:
✦ Okay, first of all-- opening up with being so broke a robber makes fun of you and asks if everything's all right at home AND doesn't believe you when you say you have good stuff to steal?? Amazing opener! 😂 This is a great example of the delightful humor this book has from beginning to end.
✦ This team works remarkably well together-- it's evident that everyone brought their own strengths to the comic with an excellent understanding of how to pair it well with the others' strengths. The story, art, and lettering flowed together as if from a single source, and that's a truly beautiful thing to behold in a comic.
✦ I didn't want to put this book down at any point, the pacing and story were both so well done. There were a few scenes where we see the characters catching up, which is normally where the story can get a bit bogged down in exposition, but Austin Paramore wrote it so that it paired perfectly with the visual nature of the comic by giving us bits and pieces that were just enough to keep us informed and intrigued without slowing down the pacing. This truly felt like a dream team of comic creators!
✦ Sarah Bollinger's art is just fantastic! I love how expressive the characters and body language are in this comic. She gives every scene and every character a sense of life and movement that looks so smooth and cohesive.
✦ Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou's lettering is something I always enjoy, but it felt especially dynamic in this comic! I absolutely loved the expressive nature of it, and it really brought to life the conversations and the characters' voices. I feel like his style of lettering with the combinations of font sizes and shapes paired with the lively balloons was perfect for a book all about "hearing" a story because I swear I could hear these voices and sound effects. His work remains undefeated in my book!
✦ I have to admit that I'm not a big music fan. I enjoy it, but I don't typically enjoy conversations or stories about it, so I was thrilled that this book wasn't like that. I had worried it would be an exposition about exploring notes and technical details that would bore me, but it couldn't be further from that.
✦ I loved the portrayal of the family dynamics here. I was able to predict a little of what was coming toward the end, but I enjoyed that because it felt like I was picking up on little clues here and there left by the author.
✦ The final ending surprised me a bit, though, too! I'm very curious to see if this means we'll get a second book!
✦ The relationships between the characters were fully developed and gave a sense of dropping me into a world that's fully formed. I enjoyed the slow revelations that came throughout the story and led us to the big reveal.
✦ I also loved the attention to detail in the art, too-- Sarah Bollinger didn't miss a chance to tell a visual story in any of these panels. We were given so much detail about the lives of the characters' lives and feelings, as well as the settings we see them in. Excellent world-building all around.
✦ I loved the way Sarah Bollinger played with the shapes of the panels throughout the comic, too. There was a particular scene showing Malcolm's routine as he transitioned from outside to inside the home that I particularly enjoyed. I also really loved the dynamic between Miles and Malcolm in that scene-- so sweet!
✦ I also love the overall message of the book, too! I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that the themes of this book really struck a chord with me.
✦ While it was a compelling read the entire time, I felt like this could be classified as a low tension story in the best possible way. I was invested in what was happening, but I also didn't feel overwhelmed by stress thinking about what would happen next. My blood pressure appreciates that 🥲

What Didn't Work for Me:
✦ I do wish we had gotten a little bit more of a resolution with the mysterious figure at the heart of this story! I'm hoping that will be addressed in a book two because the ending left it as a bit of a wait and see. But even if we don't, it's not so open-ended that I'll lose sleep over it lol.
✦ I wish we had been able to see or hear about Malcolm's other grandparent; I get why it wasn't really talked about in the story, but it would have been interesting to see that dynamic, too.

Overall
I give Malcolm Kid and the Perfect Song 5 out of 5 speech bubbles: this book was a heartwarming story with charming, funny characters who will have you rooting for them right away!

Malcolm Kid has a talent for music, but his own self-deprecation keeps him from dreaming too big. When circumstances mean that he misses an audition for a part-time job performing, he is reunited with January, his childhood friend, who takes him to a strange instrument shop for a new keyboard. This takes Malcolm on a journey to discover "The Perfect Song" to free the cursed soul of a jazz musician currently trapped inside his new keyboard.
.
Filled with genuinely heart-warming moments, funny lines, and great art, this graphic novel was a really pleasant surprise. I always like to have a graphic novel on the go, and this was a great light-hearted read (albeit with some heavier moments) to dip in and out of. I loved the character of January and was really intrigued by the guy who runs the music shop, and I hope there will be a second book to continue the story, as the ending definitely left things open for more adventures with Malcolm. And I have to mention the art, beautifully drawn, and it felt almost animated and in motion.
.
Overall, it was a great read. I'm happy I requested this one!

First off, I liked the artwork in this graphic novel. It's easy to distinguish between the characters and that is something I always find hit or miss with graphic novels and manga. At first, I have to admit that the story confused me. I didn't quite grasp some of the things that happened on the commute to school and then the relationship between Malcolm and the school group. I get that the guy in the pawn shop is supposed to be confusing - still not 100% sure who he is. But for the main characters, this sorted itself out once the story transitioned to more figuring out how to help the musician with his challenge.

Malcolm is a very real character, someone who is both likeable and dislikable in turn. His reactions were consistent with someone of his age, and while I am not that age, I was able to relate to how he was acting and reacting. January too. I liked the quest approach, the whole helping a ghost, and how the stories all interwove, although not a total surprise to be honest.

All in all, this was a fun read with some unique elements. I expect there to be more books given how it ended, so will definitely keep an eye out for them.

Malcom Kid and the Perfect Song follows the titular main character as he navigates relationships with family and friends all while dealing with a haunted keyboard. I enjoyed the characters of this book and found their relationships with each other to be interesting and well developed. That said, this book also seems to be clearly leading into a sequel and thus there are many aspects of the characters and their relationships which are mentioned, but never fully explored within the story. Thus, as I didn’t know this was the potential start of a series when I read it, there were things that felt as though they were just sort of mentioned and dropped. If a sequel is published which more fully explores these things and deals with the cliffhanger of the ending than these potential drawbacks won’t be a concern. I liked the art. The character felt expressive and the artist was able to create a variety of backgrounds that really set the mood for the story. Overall, I would recommend picking this book up and enjoying it with the knowledge that it does leave you hanging a bit at the end.

Is there such thing as a perfect song and what kind of "deal" do you need to make in order to create/discover it? That's what Malcolm finds out in this heart-felt graphic novel. Throughout his journey to help the old man trapped in his keyboard, Malcolm learns "we live life to leave something behind." It comes down to legacy: your family and the impact you have made on them, not what the world thinks of you. Along for the ride is Malcolm's childhood friend, January aka "Ary". Together they try to find the "perfect song", while also helping to find their way back to each other. I loved the graphics, especially the tech icons used to reflect the characters thoughts/feelings. Definitely left me wondering if there will be another story...Thanks to Oni Press & Net Galley for the physical & digital arcs.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

Heartwarming and silly, this graphic novel is such a fun story! Malcolm is an aspiring musician who, after his keyboard accidently gets broken, gets roped into a dubious deal for a new one. He encounters a ghost stuck in the keyboard who can only escape if the perfect song is played. Malcolm, with the help of his friend, sets out to help the ghost in exchange for learning how to be a better musician. I really enjoyed both the art and the story. Also, for what seems to be a stand alone comic this ended on one heck of a cliffhanger! I hope there is another volume.

Malcolm is a musician that finds himself without an instrument. When an old friend finds a deal on a keyboard that is "too good to be true" Malcolm definitely gets more than he bargained for.

I really appreciated how this book was more about the journey and growth than about rushing to a solution. The character building was so well done and the illustrations were amazing. Both together made me feel like these were people that you could easily come across in real life. This is definitely a book that I could see myself reading again and again.

This book reminded me so much of the Disney movie, Soul, but instead of the conflict revolving around the seasoned musician, it revolves around a young, budding musician who finds himself in a position where he needs to save the seasoned musician by finding his perfect song. Along the path to find the perfect song, Malcolm learns some family secrets that will change his life forever.

I loved the tone of this book. The author presents some heavy issues (death, grief, a parent who doesn't support his kids' dreams), but they are presented with a light, even funny, touch. Great looking art, too.

I was incredibly impressed by this graphic novel and its delightful combination of heartwarming friendship, family dynamics, and self-discovery. I requested it because of the cover and the musical theme, in addition to the fact that I’m trying to read diverse books, but I really loved it way more than I expected
.
When Malcolm's keyboard is destroyed, he ends up purchasing an enchanted keyboard haunted by the ghost of an old jazz musician. The musician is seeking the perfect song that will allow him to finally escape. Malcolm's journey to uncover the perfect song beautifully delves into the importance of family relationships, emphasizing the valuable lessons that can be learned from our loved ones and our family histories.

The art in this book is fantastic, and Sarah Bollinger has done a remarkable job of bringing the characters and the city of New Bronzeville to life. The illustrations are vibrant, and the attention to detail is impeccable. "Malcolm Kid and the Perfect Song" is an outstanding read that I wholeheartedly recommend to all readers in the middle-grade category and up.

All Malcolm wants to do is play the piano. His dad doesn't approve though and wants him to focus on school and other aspects that will actually get him a job. Things change though when he is given a cursed keyboard and needs the help from a cursed musician to play the "perfect" song. Malcolm sets out to find the perfect song and maybe even himself.

Malcolm Kid loves music but unfortunately no one in his house feels the same way. His keyboard breaks and he is in search of a new on, he has no money and a strange man in a music shop offers him a new one…
There is real life situations that a black teen would face which makes the story more accessible to readers.
The characters are great and the story has themes of family, music, friendship and history.
A fun graphic novel about following your dreams.
There is a perfect set up for a sequel which I eagerly await!

This is a fun adventure for younger readers -- the characters are charming (including the minor characters, who are all fully fleshed out), and the story is funny and wholesome and feel-good. The little details of Malcom's stats and quest updates pretty accurately capture how it feels to be that age. I think the end sets Malcom up for a sequel, and if so, I'll be interested to see what else could happen in the universe!
