I wasn't expecting very good recipes but so far the two we've made were very good and authentic. I images from the movie are a nice tie in. It's not just for Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) there are recipes for everyday and celebrations. This would be a fabulous gift book.
Authentic Mexican recipes with lovely photos (though not enough -- I always want more). Clearly marked with difficulty level and special dietary considerations: Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, and Contains Nuts. There are 16 vegan recipes by my count.
I love that this book often has a beautiful photograph of the dish on the page opposite of the recipe. The cartoon characters from the movie are sprinkled throughout the book too. At the top of the page, Garcia has listed each recipe's difficulty, prep time, serving size, and dietary notes, such as "contains nuts"; I especially find the difficulty rating and dietary notes valuable for our family's needs. At the front of the book, Garcia writes many paragraphs about the movie and inspiration for the cookbook; my favorite part of this section is when Garcia writes, "The recipes in this book reflect the geographic and cultural influences depicted throughout Coco. Many of the recipes are pulled directly from the film; others add layers to a world it created." There is also an "Ingredients Guide" at the beginning which describes epazote, piloncillo/panela, chiles, chocolate, cinnamon, masa, and more. I think this would be a fun cookbook for my child who is interested in cooking so I am adding it to my wishlist.
