Continuing the series of The Magnificent Book of Treasures is book nine, the Vikings. This series presents us with the treasures and riches that different cultures from history have left behind. The artefacts we now have (and in some cases continue to uncover) which tell us the story of these peoples. And the treasures are indeed magnificent. It was over a thousand years ago that the Vikings set sail from Scandinavia in search of new lands, taking with them their expertise in everything from storytelling to woodwork and jewellery making. This book is going to help us learn more about who they were.

The warriors helmet tells us more about how they protected themselves in battle and, is exceptional for being one of only two known to remain. A pendant in the shape of Thor’s hammer suggests an owner who may have worn it for luck, asking the god of thunder for his protection. A wooden wagon found in a burial ship is beautifully carved with images of Viking mythological tales and it is thought to have been used in religious ceremonies. A necklace with 129 beads is stunning, the glass used to make it would have been bought back from western Europe and moulded. Treasure hoards are a relatively common find but the largest one ever found contained 14,000 coins and 500 rings ~ it would have belonged to a VERY wealthy Viking! Every double page spread has a to-scale image of the object in question, a series of facts describing what it is and what it would be used for as well as a Fact File with find details. It’s both fascinating and informative.
