The newly relaunched, recharged Mighty Morphin Power Rangers continues, perfect for new and long time fans alike!
In dreams of the distant past and the battle for Earth and the Moon, new revelations about Zedd, Zordon, and Rita are uncovered. While the Rangers debate their priorities and the fate of their captured friend, an agent of their enemies awaits them— one of an evil presence that’s all too familiar! Meanwhile, Rita Repulsa (a.k.a. Mistress Vile) ramps up her pursuit of a special prize for Dark Specter— one that he won’t be able to resist. With new allies and an all-too-familiar minion, will the Morphin Grid manage to withstand Mistress Vile’s onslaught? Writer Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky), artist Simona Di Gianfelice (Firefly), and colorist Raúl Angulo (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) continue this bold new era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! Collects Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103-106.
It seems like Flores is feeling around trying to get familiar with where she wants the story to go after Parrott’s amazing run. She’s taking some aspects of his run and bringing them back, which I love. But there doesn’t seem like a lot of footing being established as storylines are jumping around a bit. Still, some awesome things are happening and I’m looking forward to seeing where they go!
What I love most about this series, especially this far into the run, is that everything is important. Even with a new writer onboard, nothing of what's made this series so damn good for the last 100+ issues has been jettisoned.
Matt and Promethea are still here. Alpha-One's back. The Death Ranger's still kicking about, as is Drakkon. The Safe Haven crew, the Omega Rangers? Yep, them too. And yet the book never feels cluttered or crowded, and the Rangers are always right at the front of everything that's going on. Plus it manages to make the whole 'Rangers fight Rita' plot that the MMPR show dragged on for six seasons somehow feel new and exciting again, even if it's the same thing we're used to seeing.
It's the kind of long-form storytelling that builds on itself in a way that the show never had the ability to do. And even now, knowing that everything here is a prelude to the next big event, it feels like part of a whole, rather than just a stepping stone to something else. It's a breath of fresh air, downright fun, and incredibly impressive.
Lord Zedd and Rita's history continues to be expanded! The comics have been great about really fleshing out the universe surrounding the rangers. Divatox even gets featured in this volume.
Lord Zedd is vulnerable and I absolutely love how that makes Kimberly feel. She even does something rash.
This volume feels like a build-up to a big event, which is it. Mistress Vile is fully forming. The rangers are anticipating the next big attack. There's a lot of moving pieces and I'm so excited to see how they all fall in just two volumes.
I give this book a 5/5. I love this series. Melissa Flores knows Power Rangers well and I really enjoy how they portrays the rangers.
We've got massive lore drops for Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa (Mistress Vile). Don't forget cameos by Divatox, Master Vile, and ...Alpha One.
I love that Bulk and Skull are still bouncing around and now trying to be more than the comic relief they were in the TV series. There's a lot to like in this series. The long form storytelling and continuous callbacks to plotpoints definitely gives me a feeling of trust and appreciation that I feel with the TMNT books. Both series are committed to carrying on one narrative for the duration and nothing ever really gets left behind.
I mean, another Power Rangers read...what's not to love eh? This one finds the MMPR meeting up with the Omega Rangers as they are getting attacked by Mistress Vile (formerly known as Rita Repulsa) and her minions such as Alpha 1. This is just another wonderful read by Melissa Flores who is quickly becoming a favorite comic author.
