I’m not someone who looks at a book and screams “AI” like the dogwhistle that it has become. A lot of innocent people have been accused of using AI when they haven’t, and that’s not cool.

However; I received this book for my birthday and I am incredibly suspicious because of;
-the “photo” of the pizza (look at the ungodly seeded tomato, the crust, and how blurred yet smooth that early AI loved to texture everything as.)

-a handful of recipes start talking about energy points? This screams ChatGPT for inconsistent descriptions.

-the pumpkin soup calls for a “blue kuri squash” or blue hokkaido pumpkin…..but the picture is very obviously of a sugar pumpkin. Also what are the block spots in the picture? None of the ingredients look like that.

-fish and chips calls for Pangasius fillets….as if that’s just a common fish? (It’s a shark catfish from Vietnam.) and yes I know its called Basa in North America but be honest, did you even know that without googling it? Also in the photo the “fillets” are square bricks like frozen fillets are.

-The description for the Thumbprint cookies:
“Marina might be really lazy, but there’s one thing that will get her up and moving, it’s baking! And she’s really good at it. Thumbprint jam cookies are her specialty. If there are two things that EVERYONE likes, it’s cookies and jam. So what could be more natural than putting them together? That’s just what Marina did with these tasty treats, which should earn her honorary citizen status in Animal Crossing - an award you, too, can win just by whipping up a batch and sharing them. And in real life, sharing these with friends will definitely score you lots of points.”

So many things wrong with this! Marina is not a lazy villager, what the everloving hell does “honorary citizen status in animal crossing” even mean?? She’s a villager????

I will add more in comments as I dive even further.

I am very frustrated with this, but after looking at the author’s…large output of IP based cookbooks between 2022-2024, it unfortunately makes a lot of sense that AI was heavily used.
Very disappointed in this.

I have played Animal Crossing: New Horizons for over 800 hours, and not to mention the hours I have played New Leaf. This cookbook seemed like a perfect addition to my collection. The cookbook includes 60 recipes inspired by Animal Crossing, including starters, soups, mains, sides, desserts, baked goods, and drinks.
Each recipe includes a photo, cook time, difficulty rating, ingredient list, and numbered directions. I appreciate that every recipe includes a photo because the Animal Crossing games include international dishes that every player may not be familiar with. The photo also gives you an idea of what the finished dish looks like and if you want to make it. Furthermore, each recipe includes a short introduction that relates it back to the games. Some recipes I would love to try are Gnocchi di Carote, Veggie Quiche, Dango, and Mom's Homemade Cake. The end of the book includes a chart with dietary considerations that lists if a recipe is dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian, which is a good addition.
I do think the cookbook would be great for Animal Crossing fans.

So not only are the recipes super cool and fun, but they put a lot of effort into making it helpful.
There is a star rating that tells you how expensive that it will be. It has a little conversion chart at the back. As well as also has a dietary restriction chart that tells you if things are lactose free, gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian.
I found it very thoughtful, and was a nice touch I wasn't expecting.

This was very cute.

The photos were well executed. There was much thoughtfulness about the dishes in general.

I don't play Animal Crossing currently (it's on my list), but it was nice having this little insight into the food of the game.

All in all, enjoyable.
