Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Finally we’ve gotten the Bardock background if even only in small glimpses that I know I have and I bet everyone else has been gnawing at the bit to get more of as well. Getting to see Granolah flip once he realizes the real villains in the reekers but the only question we climatically have left to answer post volume is after fighting each other so fiercely can they defeat the dragon ball powered Gas? I love even though it was an intense battle, because gas and Granolah are such different fighters from our main protagonists that the epic fight scenes were so much more quick and close and there was just a refreshing new bad*ssness in it I can’t lie.

Now that Granolah knows the truth, we flip things over as we find ourselves rooting for him in his battle against another enemy who is supposedly the strongest warrior out there... too... This volume is once again very battle-oriented and ends on a cliffhanger as we expect Goku to get a moment to shine once more against an opponent who looks as insane as Broly!

And so, the fights continue…

I can't tell if this gets any better, stays the same, or it's just on an infinite loop of what happens in the series since Z.

I do love the artwork and the fight sequences but it gets really old real fast when there's a brand new villain which at first is powerful but then Goku and Vegeta fight then one of them is getting tired then the other one is losing but then something happens and they win and then it's all over again.

I'm gonna give this one volume a last chance to the series, because I liked the whole story with the Cerelians and if the same thing happens again after Gus is defeated along with his gang, then it's minus 1 star from there onto the future ones.

This is me being nice to the series because I love Dragonball since I was a kid.

PS. Vegeta needs a win asap.

The Granolah Saga continues!
Highlights:
- Finally get some new backstory about Bardock, Father of Goku. During the Saiyan invasion where the Namekians and Cerealians were massacred, we have been led to believe the Saiyans killed Granolah's mom, Muesli. This is what led to Granolah's wish and desire for revenge against Saiyans. Turns out that Elec of the Heeters killed her after they were saved by Bardock. In the aftermath, Bardock fights another Heeter, Gas, and is able to defeat him and run him off. So...
- Granolah stops his fight against the Saiyans and joins them against the Heeters.
- Goku finds out Bardock was his dad.
- While the story was being told, Elec and the other Heeters found the dragon balls and made a wish for Gas to be the strongest warrior in the universe, superseeding Granolah's wish.
- Granolah vs Gas goes on for a while, but Gas gets the upper hand, going feral with Elec removes jewelry from him to calm him down.
- Goku intervenes and Gas freaks out, thinking Goku is Bardock (they look the same) and is able to overcome his feral state and come down into a calmer more powerful form.

Oh V19, where are you? How much longer will this saga go on?
Recommend. Always a great shonen.

The arc thus far has centered around the implications of using the dragon balls to become the strongest warrior in the universe. I like this premise well enough, and I like how it ties into the history of Bardock and the Saiyans, but the whole conflict feels pretty empty to me.

The Heeters want to overthrow Frieza (soo Dragonball Z) and Granola wants revenge on the Saiyans for killing his people. These conflicts just feel empty compared to the Universe Survival arc (which hinges on total universal annihilation), and even the Moro arc (which explored the implications of a magic-based enemy).

As a battle-heavy arc, it’s easy to compare this to the Moro fights. I found Moro to be a much more interesting and tricky foe, while Granola and Gas are fairly standard fighters with just more power than usual. The advent of Ultra Ego and Vegeta’s destruction training had a lot of potential to save this arc for me, but I already feel like they squandered that opportunity.

I guess Goku gets to save the day again, barely defeating the newly powered-up baddie by discovering some new transformation at the last second.

Huh, weird. Well, I was going to say something about how I briefly gave up on the DBS manga and decided to stop buying the physical volumes until the Super Hero adaptation sees print release in America, but... uh, it turns out Volume 18 isn't even out yet in the States anyway....

So we get some flashbacks here showing Burdock as a Good Guy, which I can't really use as ammunition against Toyotarou since Toriyama himself already pulled this in the Broly movie. We learn Burdock spared Granolah, his mom, and Monaito back in the day, but Elec killed Granolah Okaa-san, and Burdock had to fight Gas for a bit (which we don't really see yet, but I think will show up next volume). Granolah now knows the truth, so Goku and Vegeta let him fight Gas on his own. Elec has meanwhile gathered the two Dragon Balls off-panel to give Gas the same wish as Granolah, which is kind of wack, but whatever; I've resigned myself to tolerating these stupid "I wanna be the strongest guy!! xDD" wishes for the same reason I view the power-levels of the Saiyajin and Namek arcs as somewhat clever - the whole thing here is that "the strongest" is an ever-changing concept, as dudes grow with experience in battle, so it's not nearly as silly as it seems on paper, just as the whole point of Freeza's army's Scouters is that they're worthless when the Dragon Team are capable of suppressing their power, or exponentially magnifying it in the case of Kaiō-ken.

This volume is kind of weird for being largely Granolah versus Gas. That is, I've seen Super Hero, and Granolah isn't mentioned at all, so if he survives this arc he won't become a main character anyway, so... like, really, Goku and Vegeta can fuck off any time. They aren't really needed. The volume ends with Gas about to attack Goku because he's the spitting image of Burdock, and I guess generally speaking Goku and Vegeta always look for excuses to fight strong dudes, but it's almost pointless here.

It's funny to me that Gas "transforms" by first getting taller. The claw things around Gas's forehead were a power limiter, which allows him to transform differently after Elec removes them, but there's briefly a feeling that Gas's suppressed power is what makes him into a manlet, and that using the Dragon Balls for a power boost makes him taller because the wish can't just knock off his physical limiter device.

I guess it's also funny that Gas (Forma Alta) is initially matched by Granolah transforming into Forma Camiseta (by which I mean, like Jiren, Granolah gains power by losing clothing...?).

Granolah's mom pretty foine. Can't recall if I said that earlier.

I guess I didn't review this one when I first read it. This was the first "volume" I read on MangaPlus, rather than buying the physical tankobon, because I wasn't terribly invested in back-to-back Toyo OC arcs and wanted to blaze through the manga until we got to Super Hero. After the "end" of the manga, I decided to give it another chance, since Toriyama's death means we're probably stuck with Toyotaro indefinitely, and maybe I have to learn to appreciate his writing. So I purchased physical copies of Volumes 18 and 19, and will get around to the rest, since I'm pretty sure 21 through 24 are all Super Hero anyway.

We're basically locked in to this idea that Bardock was always a good guy, despite the non-canon TV special being better-written than Toriyama's own "I'll just rip off Superman" canon. But it's still actually nice to see Bardock be a good guy, so I probably can't complain (lol).

Gas finally enters the fray. Elec succeeds in wishing for Gas to become the universe's strongest warrior (off-screen), and Vegeta gives the last Senzu to Granolah so Granolah can take revenge against the Heeters for killing his mom and scheming to get him killed by Goku and Vegeta. This also has the consequence of making half this volume be a battle between two OCs, which is weird because we would be arguably more invested in a battle featuring our standard heroes, Goku and/or Vegeta.

I forgot the Gas part of the arc rips off the Broly Arc as well. Gas has a Berserk form that makes him senselessly rage, and this power is limited by the thing he wears around his head. So he must learn to control his power after it is unleashed, which is why Broly is watching Goku and Vegeta spar in the Super Hero movie (which hasn't happened yet, in-universe).

It doesn't matter, because these characters will not be added to video games any time soon, but we can pretend Granolah wearing his eyepatch over his right eye while his left eye goes red can work for a semi-distinct "transformation," like a level beyond his previous "form" with two red eyes, due to the increase in power from revitalizing with the Senzu. Gas is more overt in distinction between forms: small form, big form, berserk form, controlled/mastered form that just looks like his previous "strengthened by Dragon Balls" form but with the horns of his unleashed form instead of his crown thing.

****

Granolah's mom is still just so fucking hot, man.

This volume is a trip back down memory lane. Monaito tells the story of what happened 40 years ago when Freeza let the Saiyans attack planet Cereal. The Saiyans did really invade the planet and slaughter all the innocent people, but in the end it seems that one Saiyan was also responsible for saving Granolah and Monaito. That Saiyan was Bardock, Goku’s father. We don’t seem to get the full story in this volume yet; I assume some stuff will be kept back for the next volume.

This volume also moves forward the plans of the Heeters, with Elec finally retrieving the Dragon Balls and making the wish to secure their plans. Gas is now the most powerful person in the universe, but the question remains if he can get a sufficient control of his new powers before he loses to Goku, Vegeta and Granolah.

This volume felt like a great treat to long-time Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z fans! The book opens with a flashback, and you get to experience the extending of Goku's fathers' story Bardock! While tragic we have long known how he dies, this further grows the legend of the father of Earth's mightiest hero! This alone pushed this volume to the mountaintops of coolness. The battles as always are on point and loads of visual fun for your eyes. The rest of the book shifts forward to the here and now and was enjoyable. I do feel the constant push to new levels of strength are concerning and feel limited on story telling...but this volume is so rich in payoff for long-running Dragon Ball fans it is forgivable.

This was such a good volume and we get to learn about Bardock and his connects to the ongoing plot with Granolah and I really like how we tie into it and the twists and turns and we see the Heeters for the real villain that they are and yeah good to see extended lore about the saiyans, the fight is crazy and I guess my only complaint is that the moment it seems like the villain will be defeated, he gets another "secret" power-up and its been happening too frequently, but other than that Gas is turning out to be a fun villain and this story is really challenging Granolah who was supposed to be the villain of the arc but is now becoming a hero and its exciting!!

An ok continuation of the story, but does it have so drawn out??? Well, I have been watching/reading Dragon Ball stuff long enough to know that it does.

Family secrets are revealed, hidden past exposed and the strongest in the universe fight. The usual everytime it seems fight will end there is a twist or new form/ power level. The usual stuff. I do like the little bits of character development thrown in the comics.

A couple of revelations and a lot of fighting. Great artwork as usual. The story/battle continues.

Pues bueno.

Granolah vs Gas with a splash of Bardock

This arc hasn't been the most entertaining as its severely lacking in plot development. This volume focuses entirely on Granolah vs Gas, whom if you're not finding that interesting will find this volume a let down. The one saving grace is that Bardock gets some interesting back story adding some flavour to Gokus history and past. It's not much but it is there.

More drama on this one as we learn about what happened decades ago - as it turns out, Bardock saved Granolah, which now makes things a bit more complicated for the Cerealean.

In the present, Gas gets the Gon / Granolah treatment and is now super powerful. The Granolah-Gas fight that has been building up for decades finally happens. Lots and lots of power-ups since this is Dragon Ball after all. It’s a bit dragged out but again, it’s Dragon Ball.

So I’m of two minds with the Bardock flashback. I’ve always found him interesting, so it’s good to see a little depth added to him. At the same time, him being a heartless assassin (like every other Saiyan) was a great mirror to Goku who is the ultimate example of nature vs nurture in comparison to his family. Maybe I’m just a pain in the ass?
It was nice to see Granolah take center stage for a while as well.

So the truth finally comes out. Granolah isn’t the bad guy after all, and neither are our two Saiyens.
Bardock wasn’t all bad, just as I thought. His heart was far from pure but he had a soft spot for children (especially since he had his own, baby Kakarot/Goku) and he had enough morals to save Granolah, his mother and the old Namekian. I still want to know more about him.

While Volume 16 features a lot of Universe Building and 17 featured the battle royal aspect of this series, Volume 18 is somewhere in between. Through flashbacks the overall story achieves depth and brings gravity to this current storyline. As the same time there is a lot of great action in the forefront making this a great entry.

Really love the action between Granola and Gas, plus the commentary on strength vs skill through the Strongest wishes, BUT I am never a fan of when DBS makes Goku less perceptive about fighting/martial arts than Vegeta. It just runs completely counter to the original series.

4.25 Stars. A fantastic lore dump that gives us some Bardock action and great fights all around. Weapon use in Dragon Ball seems to be sporadic but it's always enjoyable when it shows up. Gas is nowhere near my favorite antagonist but he's putting up a good fight.
