Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve. Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.

Komi is in her final year of high school, and that means she’s running out of time to achieve her goal of making 100 friends! She starts off strong on the first day of classes, but a cynical new classmate’s bitter outlook soon sparks a school-wide battle royale. Can Komi make a new ally in the trenches, or will pessimism win the day?

It's the start of senior year for Komi and Tadano, which means meeting a whole classroom full of new characters and then veering into a school-wide dart-gun battle that fills the rest of the volume with, y'know, shenanigans.

This is a fine entry in the series as far as entertainment goes, but it does drive home that the series feels like it has already reached its conclusion in the last few volumes and now we just have a very long epilogue as Komi finishes reaching that arbitrary goal of 100 friends. It was supposed to be the hook of the series, but now it feels like the biggest liability, dragging us along for no good reason and causing yet more one-dimensional characters to pop up on the pages.

We reached the peak, and I worry that we can only go downhill from here. But, yup, there are five more volumes already published in Japan. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. One more year of all the same holiday tropes, then graduation, time jump, and marriage??? I hope that is not the weak sauce the author has in mind.

It’s the start of third year and Komi’s been thrown in a class full of people who aren’t really her friends at all. No time to worry, however, as a literal battle royale has broken out and it’s winner take… not much…

Well, you can’t win them all and the heady rush of a new class means a chance to cram in as many new characters as possible and for things to get precious little development in favour of lame gags.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are some solid jokes in this one, amidst all the churn. The battle royale is a shocking waste of a premise that this series would normally devour and seems mostly designed to show Komi in combat gear.

Which is unfortunate because it takes up almost the whole volume. And, as I said, parts of it are very good; the contest is based on basically shooting people with Nerf guns and that conceit pays huge dividends in a couple of scenarios, mostly with Najimi, whose reach exceeds their grasp by a mile, and Manbagi, whose new haircut is great, apropos of nothing.

But this is not an action manga and it becomes brutally clear that this is going to go on and on with very few memorable sequences and underbaked jokes left to fill the void - there are only so many ‘people think they’re the hero and then get immediately shot’ jokes you can dredge from that well.

Komi’s always a toss-up with me and the coin does not land well this time. Scattered gags do not make up for how overlong this entire arc is, and, oh man, Yamai, argh, just… hang on, I need to collect myself.

Look, I hate Yamai, full stop. So, when the story pairs her with Nakanaka and they continue their post-band association, and the yuri-loving student is shipping them… it quickly turns into the rare case where she hasn’t ruined the volume for me. So, naturally, one of the last chapters has her trying to get Komi to jump rope so she can catch a glimpse of her underwear. You don’t need a fake gun to shoot yourself in the foot, I guess.

Elsewhere, new class has one girl who doesn’t want to be Komi’s friend, which is a pretty unique thing in this series, honestly. But the story doesn’t really make half as much hay from it as it could, minus some very light tension. Komi and Tadano have some cute moments together, so there’s the interesting stuff.

But the rest of the class ranges from okay, the one guy who cannot seem to do anything without bumping into anything, to forgettable, the cute girl (it’s her thing, just go with it), all the way down to the absolute dregs - the guy who speaks in baby talk while sucking on a pacifier. He feels like a rejected script idea that got crammed into the book by mistake.

Nothing is worse than bad comedy, really, unless it’s bad comedy that’s occasionally good. There’s barely enough here, plus that storyline with the shut-in coming back to school would actually be great if it had better supporting material.

3 stars - like I say, it wasn’t that bad, but it also wasn’t that good. I get wanting to swap in a new group of friends, I really do, but they needed a lot more work to be anything on the crew we just left behind so memorably last volume.

The battle royale was fun! For a bit..at the end I felt it went on a bit too long. But I loved Komi getting the courage to argue. Say what you believe, hun!

All good until Yamai came back again…can she just disappear and never come back again? She destroys any scene she is in. One of my most hated manga characters

Third year begins, and we meet some first years. Yamai just has to be her irritating self by the end.
This volume focuses on a battle royal dreamed up as a first day activity.
Honestly, this is a kinda weak volume, but the one starting second year was as well, so I have hope the characters will get more fleshed out.
The highlight of this volume was Komi standing up to a friend when she was rude to a class mate.

At this point Komi Can’t Communicate does what it does. It’s enjoyable even though this volume is a bit more chaotic than usual. The Battle Royale is a cool idea that overstays it’s welcome due to how it’s presented. Shiina is a character that I hope continues to appear going forward because I think that she can maybe provide a loophole for Komi to not make 100 friends and it not be the end of the world.

3.25?

Komi et al start a new year and, as a way to celebrate it, we get a whole Battle Royale between the different years; which was, frankly, a bit chaotic and confusing, and way too long, till the point you could say that's what this whole volume is about.

We also get to know a bunch of new characters (too many, actually?) so Komi can keep collecting her 100 friends, as that seems to be now the main point again of this whole series. Most of them are not very interesting, and a few of them are just too weird, and not in a fun way. Plus there's one new classmate that doesn't seem to like Komi?

I felt it was very out of character how much Komi talks in this volume, with what are mainly new characters. But then she goes and has to write her answers to Tadano at the end? Nah...

All in all, a pretty weak addition to the series.

Review for vol 24 and 25. 24 was so sweet! The 2 MCs went on a date and had lots of embarrassing moments! So cute. In vol 25, they began school again, and did a less interesting but intense battle royale for a silly little prize.

High school is as confounding as ever. In a convenient reversal of Komi's entrance and introduction to the miniature cosmos of high school, her final year is packed full of classmates who raise her anxiety levels for entirely different reasons. KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v25 yanks the ripcord on what readers might have assumed would be a rather easy and entertaining third year.

Instead of a class filled with recognizable faces, Komi is stuck with another dozen new delinquents. Instead of a gaggle of fawning supporters around every corner, Komi must now contend with hard-headed edgelords and other, scrupulously shy contemporaries. Tadano is still by her side, and Osana remains a source of havoc, but if Komi's going to make new friends, she's going to have to rely less on the kindness of others and more on her own stubbornness.

Who are the new faces? A staunchly immature girl who hates how everyone does whatever Komi wants. An exceedingly and comically prickly young woman who is actually (probably) really nice. A self-conscious, weepy girl (who is also nice). A guy who wants to be a doctor when the grows up, yet keeps hurting himself. And a young man who loves cameras, fittingly named, Mantaro Kamera. Readers are sure to have their favorite. Indeed, Yo Fuki, whose name literally translates to "clumsiness," is a deadpan klutz nobody can figure out.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v25 ushers in the updated cast by way of Day One games, the entrance ceremony, and a few other shenanigans. Komi's growth is most apparent when she gets into a heated argument with Muzuka Shiina, the edgelord girl. Shiina wants to quit (the game) and walk away, but Komi's niceness and guilt isn't having it. Komi says more across six pages of argumentation than she has in whole volumes. But it's a worthy conflict. Shiina enjoys needling people, and Yuka Shiroki, a gyaru, flings venom in response, and Komi takes it upon herself to step in. Interestingly, if painfully, Tadano is shouted down from interfering on her behalf.

The expanded cast likewise means familiar characters head elsewhere, or are relegated to side stories. For example, the bloodless rivalry between Nakanaka and Yamai continues. Manbagi snares a new seatmate, a super-shy nice guy. Katai is still a victim of his own misunderstandings. And first-year Komorebi Hiki, cousin to country girl Inaka, slowly but surely muddles her way through her insecurities and makes her very first friends. One ponders if the creative team can pry apart and duplicate some of the magic of the manga's earlier chapters, given the deliberately outrageous nature of the added character personalities. However, in the short term, at least a few of these memorable dynamics will stick around, if on the periphery.

I love “Komi Can’t Communicate”. I was introduced to it via the Netflix anime and was desperate to know what happens in Komi and Tadano’s second year of High School. I was not disappointed! Komi’s goal to make 100 friends is such a sweet journey and Tadano is just the cutest character. I love characters that are shy and quiet because I relate to them more. Later in the series other characters are obviously introduced, some that I’m not too keen on, not because they are bad characters, I’m just not a fan of them.

This felt like a filler volume. Nothing much happened, just a whole bunch of introducing new characters and befriending a few. Hopefully it goes well again next volume.

It's the beginning of the Third school year for Komi and big changes are afoot. As per usual everyone's been shuffled around and Komi has found herself in a class full of strangers. Luckily Tadano is still her desk neighbour but poor Manbagi is in a new classroom altogether. Still, at least she's rocking a cool new haircut and has a shiny new deskmate to get to know. Too bad the dude can't talk to girls without fainting!

Meanwhile, a Battle Royale breaks out and everyone gets Nerf(ish) guns to defeat the other class Years. It's the usual bonkers nonsense and this time Komi tries to actively bond with her new crazy classmates with mixed results. It seems there is a girl who straight up dislikes Komi and is determined NOT to be her friend. This is an interesting twist since the last person to do so was Rei and she was eventually won over. This girl seems to enjoy trolling Komi to the point we see a rare loss of temper! It'll be interesting to see how this develops in the future.

The tall sickly student girl Komi attended to as a Shrine Maiden is back and gets her own little chance to shine as she stumbles into friendships and wins the Battle Royale! She gets called Gundam Girl in honour of the cardboard armour she wore that made her look like a robot (much to her embarrassment)

We end with Yandere Girl up to no good and trying to sneak a peek (and photograph) Komi's panties while she innocently plays a jumping rope game. Fortunately, she keeps getting foiled by other girls trying to join in with Komi and being utter crap at it. Heh!

I picked this up as part of my continuation of this series.
"Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 25" continues to follow Komi and her classmates as they try to find themselves in their high school years. In this volume, the gang is starting their final year of high school. As a way to bond as a class, and to start the year off on a fun note, there is a school wide nerf gun war.
In this volume, Komi meets a highly cynical classmate who calls out Komi for wanting 100 friends. She accuses Komi of not really caring about the quality of the friends or really taking the time to get to know them, but rather that Komi is so fixated on making friends that she will befriend anyone. I really liked this character because it is the first person to really push back on Komi and her plan to make 100 friends. I think it is great that Komi wants to push herself and try to make more friends, but it has been pretty easy for her to do so because everyone falls over themselves for her. This tension and differing opinion of Komi provided a more robust reading experience.
The competition between the classes was really entertaining to read. This was a different event for the story, and I really enjoyed it. It was definitely highly dramatized, but it was entertaining, nonetheless.
I am excited to see how Komi's final year of high school will play out, and I am curious if she can hit her goal and make 100 friends.

Another exciting volume of Komi Can’t Communicate finds the third year class (final year) facing off in against the second and first year classes in a nerf-style battle royal. Friendships are started and good times had in this fun volume. I felt as if the characters grew slightly but I also felt as if this volume wasn’t as impactful to the entire overall story as previous installments. That said, this was still fun and a page turner with beautiful art and a fun story. One thing I started to think about that I have not given enough credit for is the translation. To capture the essence so well and convert it to a different language is a challenge rarely appreciated until it is done less than stellar. John Werry gets my heartfelt appreciation for his work! This series has not skipped a beat and though I am sad that I feel the conclusion is coming, I feel it has been a worthwhile journey. And when I say completion, I am just assuming the book will end around volume 33.

I love this series so much, but this one was kinda weird. It's a new year, which means new characters. Kinda all crammed in here, the class this year is almost entirely new faces. And someone was actually mean to Komi which was kinda a trip lol. Focus comes off of Tadano and Komi's romance here and it's a very goofy volume with some solid jokes and cute new folks.

I felt like the localization was a little off in this one. Maybe I'm crazy, but there were lots of things that didn't land or maybe the translation was a little weird. Also the gun game at school was weird. It was for sure a fun story, but it was definitely strange from an American perspective. Not a knock on the work, cultural differences and all, but it made me feel weird and sad.

Little Najimi presence, no family presence, and a lot hitting all at once. The art is great as usual, it's been an incredible style to watch evolve.

**volume review**

-Meet the new classmates! The author's definitely veering into some weirder characters, which is to be expected with how large this cast has grown - there are some interesting ones though that will be interesting to learn more about. It's also interesting to throw Komi in a class where people don't really want to be her friend; it adds more challenging to the dynamic and finally shakes the norm of everyone adoring her
-The new first year girl Komo looks so sweet - I can't wait to see more of her! She's like a young Komi again
-Rumiko's hair is so cute! I'm sad she's not with Komi again in class, but that new boy beside her (Wakai) looks like a new ship... :)
-Setoka Icho being the proxy chairman may be the best thing to come - I cannot WAIT to see the chaos she unleashes!
-THE SCHOOL BATTLE ROYALE IS THE BEST PART OF THE VOLUME, NO CONTEST!!!

A new term, new classmates, and a battle royale to mark the occasion. A new challenge for Komi as well, an obstacle on the way to her goal of 100 friends. What if someone does not want to be friends with you?

A battle royale was unexpected, but hard to get going reading wise, especially when your former regular supporting classmates are reassigned to different classes. I already miss them, and I haven't connected as a reader with the new ones.

Country girl Inaka gets a new role, still a minor one, but I think she's underused and is primed for additional exposure.

I look forward to the next volume.

Komi is in a new classroom in Year 3. She has to start from scratch again!

I ALREADY MISS THE PREVIOUS CLASSROOM. THEY WERE THE BEST. IT'S NO FUN WITHOUT THE BEST CREW.

Anyway, the new year starts with Komi trying to make new friends in a class of unknowns. The big event of this volume is the Battleroyal of the different classes. Which was somewhat fun but at the same time not that much.

But Komi leaning towards more talking than writing her words is such a great development. And stepping up to confront the "AMONG US" was quite good.

But I miss the old friends already, they were so GOOD.

Komi Can't Communicate is always a delight though I did find that this volume was one that I liked a little bit less than previous volumes. The main reason for this is the battle royale arc. This volume covers the start of the next school year and I liked the first few chapters covering this but the majority of this volume is a nerf style battle between the different classes. Though it was an interesting way to introduce the new characters and explore the different dynamics of the class, it covered far too many characters and I didn't find it as funny or endearing as other chapters. I am glad that this arc is over and we can move on.

the product of years

This volume is almost entirely one story about a battle Royale between the entire student body, year vs year. It works Here because we know over 67 different characters from the previous works. So a character might pop up for just a couple of panels but you either remember or vaguely recognize X or Y and get to see how they handle a nerf gun war.
It’s good fun but not a book to start with. To be fair, it’s volume 25 and not impenetrable but…
I have enjoyed the journey to this point and will follow right to the end.

Beginning of the third year and Komi is in a class where she knows few students, so we are back in (greater) social anxiety mode. There's a new homeroom teacher, so we get introductions to students, thankfully, as now we are overwhelmed with all the characters. Komi and tadano's tame romance affords a couple nice moments, but most of this volume is focused on a nerf-gun Battle Royale competition that goes almost no where. In a long series you sometimes get tired, all right? But this one is not memorable to me, sort of scattered.
