A NEW NOVEL IN THE NATIONALLY BEST-SELLING LIADEN UNIVERSE® SERIES

A door never closes, but a window opens . . .

With origins in the Old Universe, the malevolent, acquisitive intelligence of Tinsori Light sought to infect others with itself, and send those agents out into the wide new universe to infect even more.

For centuries, two heroes stood between Tinsori Light and the vulnerable universe—Light Keepers Jen Sin yos'Phelium and Lorith of the Sanderat.

Just when it seemed that they—merely human—must fail, Tinsori Light, enfeebled by aged systems, succumbed to the stress of a unique spatial event . . . and died, leaving the station a shell.

Luckily, the light keepers have back-up. A mismatched team of arcane specialists are on-station, working non-stop to preserve the Light, build trustworthy systems, and open the refurbished station for business.

In fact, ships are already incoming, and it becomes a matter of urgency to sort friend from foe. In particular, the Lyre Institute wishes to acquire Tinsori Light, and will do anything, spend anyone, to achieve that goal.

Book 8 of the 2025 Read Your Hoard Challenge

How I adore this series! I never tire of adventure in the Liaden Universe. I've been considering why this is and I have found two reasons. First and foremost, this is an optimistic universe. Yes, there are bad actors who are persistent (the Department of the Interior and the Lyre Institute), but there are far more decent persons (biological and artificial) who give me hope. Secondly, it is an excellent mix of science fiction and fantasy. There are artificial intelligences, space ships and space stations, but there are also Healers, wizards (the Dramliz), and sentient, manipulative Trees. In addition, many of my absolute favourite books are written by man-woman teams. I think this provides a balance that I find very attractive.

In this volume, we return to the out-of-the-way space station, Tinsori Light, a relic of the old universe, possessed by the Enemy, held in check only by two devoted Light Keepers, Jen Sin yos'Phelium and Lorith of the Sanderat. They have been murdered and reconstituted by the Light so many times over the last two centuries that they teeter on the abyss, having difficulty trusting that the old intelligence that ran the station is wiped out and that they can be safe again.

Korval, having Jen Sin on site, has salvage right to this damaged station and have declared their intention to return it to its position as a thriving space port. The Cousins start pouring in to assist, overwhelming Jen Sin, who has relied only on Lorith and himself for centuries. Can he adapt to this new reality? And of course, with this many members of Korval together, the luck will ensure no lack of other challenges.

I appreciated the afterword by Steve Miller describing some of their process, for instance that they alternated which one took the lead on each book. I was especially entertained by their inspiration for Tinsori Light. While vacationing at the seaside, they developed a habit of listening to the maritime weather radio. Every day, they heard, “Matinicus Rock is not reporting.” First it became a catch phrase, but it morphed into a distant space station in the far flung ocean of the universe, cut off by malfunction. It is selfish of me, but I hope that Sharon will continue to write without her life-mate Steve.

4.5 stars for this sequel to Neogenesis.

I am so happy that the authors brought us up-to-date with the happenings at Tinsori Light. I was worried about all of our friends, human and non. I didn't trust that the super-evil intelligence that controlled the space-station was actually well and truly vanquished.
I was delighted to catch up with Jen Sin and Lorith, Theo and Bechimo, Tolly Jones, and all the others.
I was also somewhat amused by the timeliness of this book, given the current debates about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence. Many of our characters are "Free Intelligences" and working with our humans (i.e. the good guys); on the other hand, the Intelligence that ran Tinsori Light was warped and evil.
The fight to make sure that Tinsori Light was no threat was suspenseful and made for a great story. i loved it and had a great time reading it.

Absolutely delightful. Lee & Miler gather together a host of characters we've longed to see more of, introduces them each to the other, and makes it all work. A fantastic celebration of the 25th book in this brilliant series.

Salvage Right is the latest in the Liaden Universe group of books. Although one can read the books in any order, my recommendation is to start further back in the story arc to fully appreciate the many nuances of the story. The Liaden Universe books are deep and run many story lines at the same time without losing track of the essentials. They are satisfying on many levels. The books are set in space, and yet are about people with motivations and emotions that are easily understandable.

I was very happy to have a furtherance of the Tinsori Light story line, as well as more Theo Waitley. (YAY!!)

These books are worth purchasing - I read and re-read them many times. The characters become beloved friends. If you have yet to discover the Liaden Universe, you have a glorious treat in store.

The 25th book in the Liaden Universe series is primarily set on Tinsori Light. It is time for a cleanup operation. Since Ren Zel repaired the tear in the universe, Tinsori Light is now fixed in this universe. The malevolent intelligence that guided the Light in its goal of infecting the new universe has died and Tocohl has grabbed the reins of the station.

Light Keepers Jen Sin yos'Phelium and Lorith of the Sanderat are no longer alone trying to prevent the Light from carrying on its evil plans. Hazenthull and Mentor Tolly Jones are also on site. So is Seignur Veeoni and her aide and bodyguard M Traven.

All of them and many more new arrivals are trying to stabilize the Light, clean out any remnants of the old system, and get the station ready for doing business. However, things aren't going to be easy. There are still remnants of the old system trying to reassert dominance. But worst of all, the Lyre Institute is determined to claim the station as its own. And beneath it all, a new intelligence seeded long ago in the old universe by the Uncle is finally ready to begin doing her job at the station.

This was another excellent episode in the Liaden Universe. It ties up a number of loose ends left in Neogenesis. My personal feeling is that Neogenesis should be read before this one so that a new reader can get some handle on the large cast of characters. Long time fans will enjoy meeting characters they have grown to care about again in this episode. It turns out to be a major Clan Korval reunion before the story ends.

The authors see this book as a chance for the characters to get some redemption and the hope of a happy life. I agree with that and know that I am satisfied by the way things are on the former Tinsori Light which will now go on as Catalinc Station.

Yet another excellent installment in Lee & Miller's Liaden Universe. Many of the characters that fans of the Universe are familiar with take the stage. Plot lines presented in previous works are evolved further in this satisfying book. The setting is Tinsori Light and the story continues from where Neogenesis left off.

Lee & Miller's imaginations shine on. We re-encounter old friends: Theo, Bechimo and crew; Val Con and Miri; Anthora and Ren Zel; newer friends like Signeur Veeoni, Tolly, Tocohl and Haz and make new friends, fully developed characters in their own right, a hallmark of Lee & Miller's writing.

The story is intricate, tension is maintained and the resolution unexpected. It was difficult not to read the whole book in one sitting.

A delightful space opera novel about the caretakers of Tinsori Light. This space station used to wander between the Old Universe (taken over by evil) and the current universe. They think now that the evil computer running Tinsori Light is dead — but is it? Fast-paced with many plot threads and twists. I really enjoyed it.

"Salvage Right" is the twenty-fifth novel set in the Liaden Universe. It was published last week and I finished it this morning. Given that I have six shelves(*) of books waiting to be read, this speaks to my enthusiasm. The Liaden Universe is a most excellent place, a place of adventure, and daring, and care for one's companions. Many of the characters have come to feel like friends. In short, my expectations were high and "Salvage Right" did not disappoint. It delighted.

It returns to several characters whom the authors felt deserved more attention, most especially Jen Sin. Jen Sin delighted, though, at times, I was quite worried on his behalf. Let us just say that he has been through ... a lot. The book has threats, action, peril, but also many gentle scenes where the characters have time to take stock, to mingle, even to take tea with each other, and, most of all, to help one another. I think it is the compassion of the characters that I love most of all. This is a book that made me feel happier in myself and with the world, although .

For the record, Jen Sin is my favorite part of this book, but Catie and the avians come a close second, and Hevelin after that.

Notes for those familiar with the Liaden Universe. Jen Sin seems to me the central figure, but Tolly, Theo, Tocohl, and Seignur Veeoni all play a major part. Briefer but delightful appearances come from a Tree, a norbear (Hevelin), cats, Anthora and Ren Zel, Val Con and Miri, Hazenthull, Joyita, Bechimo, Clarence. I'm certain I've forgotten others.

Five out of five quilted stars.

(*) Okay. Six and a half shelves. And the overflow stack near my window.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

The 25th Korval book... I remember picking up Agent of Change on the recommendation of a Barnes and Noble employee in 1988 or 89

Tinsori Light has been anchored in this universe, for good and has fallen into the hands of Korval
by Salvage Right and the Lightkeeper Jen Sin. What follows is the Clan helping Jen Sin get the station ready to become what it was originally meant to be before the Great Enemy's takeover.

Most of the major Korval players show up, storylines from earlier books are tied off and a good time is had by all.... well almost all and that is why it gets 4 stars and not 5

The evil AI Tinsori Light is no more but there are still plenty of people who have evil designs on the old space station.

The station formerly known as the Ghost Station (because it kept falling out of our universe back into the Old Universe only to return to this universe) now belongs to Clan Korval because the clan was responsible for the demise of the evil AI in the last book.

In this book, it is time to make repairs and get the space station back open for trade/business. Unfortunately, there are still evil people who want to control others and would love nothing better than to gain control of this space station.

As the many ships arrive to help restore the station, evil humans (including unwilling victim humans who are now controlled by the bad guys) find it easy to blend in with the others there to do good.
So, our good guys have their work cut out for them!

Highly recommended for fans of the Liaden Universe, for long-running series fans, for space opera fans who enjoy a mix of characters from different races & cultures who have learned to work smoothly with each other, and for suspense fans who enjoy stories about the fox might already be in the hen house (how do you tell the evil-minded folks from the good-hearted folks, anyway?), etc.

And fans of the paranormal who enjoy humans with witch/wizard level powers!

It was a pleasure to be back in the Liaden Universe and not dealing with the minutia of making Surebleak more civilized. We’re back on Tinsori Light which appeared to have been killed in our last outing with it. There’s plenty of plot as various characters get drawn to the station making it ready to put into service. Tocohl, Jen Sin, Lorith and Seignur Veeoni and Tolly are soon joined by Theo and her crew. Shortly thereafter they are followed by other ships. Everyone knows that there will be spies from the Lyre Institute for Exceptional Children coming soon. Do they arrive and do they make trouble? Of course they do.

I really liked the structure of quick short scenes that took you from one location to another on the station. Most chapters were only a few pages long, and many were less than a page. I also liked how the less human characters learned how to work better with others gaining trust and losing a certain arrogance about themselves. I especially liked how Seignur Veeoni was allowed the opportunity to evolve into a better version of herself.

I miss the early books with their romances and the plays of clashing cultures, but series take on a life of their own, and I wouldn’t actually want to read the same plot over and over. This was a very satisfying outing.

Liaden series books are an auto buy for me and Salvage Right did not disappoint. The Liaden universe grows with every installment and each time I fall in love with their characters I think this is it, they are my favourite, and then they create more amazing ones.

I first started the adventure with Shan and Priscilla, and then Val Con and Miri, so they were always my favouries, but then came Theo, and Anthora and Ren Zel, Pat Rin, Syl Vor, Padi, and now Jen Sin.

Theo saying Jen Sin is worn out is an understatement and your heart aches for him and what he has been through, and yet he is the best of them and battles all odds to protect everyone but himself.

Jen Sin is the Tinsori Light Keeper and although he believes the old world light has corrupted him, he is determined to do his duty and protect the lives of those on his station. Clan Korval has claimed the space station and is now repairing it, bringing many more souls on board and into peril.

This novel brings together many favourite characters and the story evolves with elegance and balance, and although Melant'i rules and life is complex, you want to live in this world beside them and wish that you were part of Clan Korval.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I like this series, so of course, I expected to like this one, but it was particularly good. Though certainly it ties into the surrounding stories, this one had a slightly more "standalone" feel in that it largely deals with getting space station Tinsori Light up and running again. I tend to like these more recent books most when we are more centered on one person's story, rather than constantly jumping around. The book is almost exclusively set on Tinsori Light, and Light Keeper Jen Sin is the focal point of the story. Many other characters are involved in the story, of course, but if you had to name a main character, it would be Jen Sin. I really enjoyed getting to know him. Despite all he's been through, he remains optimistic and determined to make the station a safe place for others, even at great personal cost. Seeing the rest of Korval welcome him into the family (re-welcome?) offered some lovely feel-good moments. The enemy here is a little too similar to the DOI as to almost be interchangeable, but that's a minor quibble.

I hope this is not the last we see of Jen Sin, Catie, and the rest of the team, but if so, this section is wrapped up well.

I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It brings quite a few of our favorite (or at least my favorite) characters in and moves the overall arc story of this universe along nicely. Now, I wouldn't say this is a story to jump into the Liaden Universe with, but if you did it would certainly give you plenty of stepping-off points to follow. Who is the Uncle? What is an Xtrang? The Old Universe? So many places to go!
I was glad to see a couple of loose ends tied up, but also glad to see where the authors could go in so many directions in new stories as well. There are no big cliffhangers, but plenty of "So where does so-an-so go from here?"
It was a fun story. I'll definitely re-read it. Actually, this was a re-read as I bought the eArc because I have zero patience for waiting for a new Liaden story and it came out around my birthday. Still, another read is in my future, if only to find all the little details you miss when galloping through a book on the first read. And I always gallop through my first read of any book in this universe.
Also, I'd like to thank the authors for their tip-of-the-hat to another author I really enjoy, C.E. Murphy. I loved meeting Catie. I hope you do too.

A fantastic addition to a consistently brilliant series

Although I read a library copy of Salvage Right, I will buy the ebook as soon as possible, because this is definitely a book to reread and savor. I laughed and cried and wished I was reading the whole series for the first time again. Tolly has become an amazing character, and Jen Sin caused more than a few of the tears. Haz, Tocohl, Theo, Bechimo, Joyita, Veeoni, the Tree, Catie, Ren....so many truly lovely and memorable characters occupy the pages of this well-written, thrilling story. I recommend reading the books in whichever order the reader chooses from the authors' website. Jumping straight into Salvage Right is possible, since the authors do a great job of covering important backstory, but the richness of the relationships might suffer without knowledge of how everyone got to this point. The Liaden series is awesome.

Tinsori Light Station is in need of rehabilitation and Clan Korval has claim by salvage right on the station because long-lost Jen Sin yos’Phelium has been on station for years. But he needs some rehabilitation as well. Making the station into a real stop for traders is a big job but welcomed by border traders and AI ship entities. But has the Enemy from the old universe really been destroyed? Not to mention the insidious Lyre Institute attempting to subvert and gain control of the station for themselves. The Delm, though Clan Korval is thin in numbers, sends many people to the aid of their newly recovered clan member as quickly as they can, including Captain Theo and her AI ship, Healer Anthora and mate Zel Ren, and Mentor Tolly Jones and partner Hazenthull. Lots going on and sometimes the plot seemed fractured. Leans more heavily on the techno side of the Liaden Universer storytelling.

Another great story from award winners, Lee and Miller. I first read about Tinsori Light and how Jen Sin Los Phelan gave his life and ship to protect his world from the intent of the light from a previous story. This story brings together so many characters already established by the authors. Tolly Jones, Haz, the uncles sister, Theo and her self aware ship and others. The light was claimed by Korval with Jen Sin temporary light keeper. Working together this groups intent was to disable the light and make the station a stop for self aware ships. Much intrigue, action and outcomes. World and character development make the story a delight. I sometimes get the feeling these people are real! This book deserves a second or more reading! I loved the print size also and the way the book fell open to accommodate the read…good job!!!!

A wonderful class reunion!

Lee and Miller are, without a doubt, the best at what they do….which is Space Opera. The Liaden Universe is the most fully developed and populated fantasy universe I have ever come across.

Why is that? First, because they always have a good story to tell. The story must come together in a certain way. A way that may, not so much defy logic, as approach logic from a new angle. But while the story is the foundation, what really makes Lee & Miller the Queen & King of Space Opera is the depth and humanity of the characters. Salvage Right is particularly heartwarming in this regard because soooo many old friends have dropped by for the party.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Sharon & Steve.

HEA on Tinsori Light

This book juggles a lot of characters, many of whom aren't in the same place, but they're all dealing with the same problem. Tinsori Light is a Great Work of the Enemy in the old universe. It's dead, but may have left some remnants that could still cause trouble.

In addition to this ancient and deteriorating enemy, there's a group interested in ancient intelligences that wants Tinsori Light for itself.

It was great to see some old friends and see how they're getting on. I was especially glad to see Anthora recovered. Jen Syn is a fun protagonist, and I would love seeing him again, but there is no cliffhanger.

This book could be read as a stand-alone. It is kind of a sequel, but the plot is self contained.

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller return to Tinsori Light station now firmly in the Liaden Universe and belonging to Clan Korval by Salvage Right (hard from Baen). Two l light keepers had been keeping the mad AI running the station at bay for centuries. Now others come to fix the station and deal with its complicated problems. Among them are familiar figures from previous Liaden books. It’s fun to see people dealing with complicated problems like restoring destroyed areas, and dealing with mechanical birds that suddenly appear. There’s also the Lyre Institute which has agents in place to capture the station. This is a heartwarming tale and the twenty-fifth addition to the long running series.

what a fun read!

This story is part of the larger story of the Liaden Universe. The story moves in unexpected ways all tied to Korval’s luck. It turns out, more often than not, to work in Korval’s favor even when the main participants think it to be the opposite. Here is a continuation of the redefining of the definition of a clan, interspersed with intense concern for the characters as they get into scrapes that would make a parent shudder, but is all in a day’s work for this cast of characters. Lee and Miller tell excellent stories and this is no exception! Do yourself a favor and read all the stories of the Liaden Universe!

I finally thought of a way of describing the special pain of reading a later-in-series Liaden Universe installment: It's like being a fly on the wall when the wedding planners for Romeo and Juliet are pulling an all-nighter about the seating arrangements for the reception and you know the swords are going to be out before that and that a sect of Renaissance ninjas devoted to solving civil unrest by marrying mortal enemies is going to jump out of the family trees and save the day. But even though that's going to happen, the discussion about choosing the font for the place cards is way longer than the swordfight...

A solid Liaden universe book, but it feels both like too much and not enough happens. The universe is so large and so many characters pop in that it feels like most of the book is describing the setup, and the actual conflicts and plot involving the Tinsori Light folks are barely given screen time. There's some progress made but it mostly feels incidental - maybe a bit too much setting up long term issues leaving not much progress made in this book alone. Probably doesn't help that Tinsori Light has a lot of past, spanning the entire history of the Liaden universe so it feels like we don't have quite enough story to convincingly cover that span of time.
