Zephyr is the last human fighting evil in a world abandoned by the gods. After a five-year war against humans and demons, Zephyr is slain by Tartarus, the Demon Lord. In the aftermath, much of humankind was either slaughtered or captured as hosts for demons. When all seems lost, Zephyr is abruptly reincarnated, much to the sinister amusement of the gods, to save humanity and avenge those he loves.
With his newfound second life, Zephyr is flung ten years into the past without his physical strength, starting at square one as a temple slave. Marked with a brand keeping him in servitude, he must navigate his new reality and regain his former powers. Some gods are still rooting for Zephyr’s success and offer him perks as he continues his quest, leading to the ultimate battle against the god of destruction, Tartarus, once more. Can Zephyr finally have his revenge and save the woman he loves, or is he doomed to repeat the past?
This volume collects episodes 1–10 of the hit WEBTOON comic.
Blue-Deep is a South Korean comic creator (manhwaga) who works with the power of video games, hard rock music, and coffee. The creator launched Doom Breaker on WEBTOON in 2021.
For me, this was a 3,5/4 star webcomic. I love the plot. I KNOW that is is just a typical reincarnation/ person destined to save the world story, but I just love the concept of this webcomic.
I really liked that a lot of the side characters actually have a well written backstory and personality, for example Ned who was betrayed by the organisation he was part of and then changed sides and became an ally of the protagonist.
I‘m also glad that the love interest is about as powerful as the main character Zephyr.
Also, the art is amazing, especially in the fight scenes.
What I like least about Doom Breaker is probably the fact how powerful Zephyr actually is. There’s rarely a fight that is actually challenging for him if you consider how many battles there are in this comic. I feel like sometimes it’s just too easy for him facing an immensely experienced and strong opponent.
Apart from that it’s a really good webcomic that I would recommend.
Doom Breaker was everything I thought it would be and more!
The story was action-packed and thrilling full of grotesque monsters and exciting battle scenes! The artwork was stunning and not to miss as well!
I loved Zephyr! He reminded me a bit of Sung Jinwoo for Solo Leveling and Dante from Devil May Cry! He was fierce determined and all around awesome!
I certainly can’t wait for more! If you love stories with gods/goddesses, monsters, fighting focused, skill building, high stakes, skill system, and more then check this one out!
3 Stars: First ten episodes 4 Stars: Overall webtoon series episodes 1-64 Doom Breaker chronicles the adventure of Zephyr as he is sent back in time with a second chance to save humanity. A monster apocalypse has taken over the world, and Zephyr has a special gift from the gods given to him in this life. In this journey, the reader gets to see him pull from his knowledge of his former life in order to change the tide in this one. Watching as he cobbles together old and new friends reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings if it were in a post-apocalyptic setting with more action. The art was distinctive, the world-building well done, and the characters, while not the most emotionally complex, had enough exploration of character so they didn't fall flat.
I read Doom Breaker on the webtoon app and sped through all 64 episodes. The first ten were definitely interesting, showcasing Zephyr's no-nonsense attitude and glimpses of those he loved. That being said, it did feel very recycled and generic in the first ten without really introducing what really makes Doom Breaker so good. I've read some webtoons that start off so strong in the first ten, but this story was more of a slow progression building up as things came together. Blue-Deep's story feels very familiar in the sense that it pulls upon well-used tropes of upgrading skills, the protagonist being more powerful, and almost a video-game-like scenario with final bosses and tasks to complete. As the story progresses, little unique elements bring the story to its fullest potential.
I'm excited for this to be released as a graphic novel and will consider whether to buy the whole series when the volumes are out.
*Assessment of the first ten episodes 🆗PLOT 🆗CHARACTERS ☑️PLOT TWISTS
The story is over-the-top and dramatic, which fits the tone of the book absolutely perfectly. The art is flashy, bright, and reflects the dramatic tone in a way that really enhances the story.
There’s some lingo that I think is typical of this genre that I don’t quite understand. The real world is very real, but the physics are that of a video game. But this isn’t a virtual reality story. It’s very cool, but it’s not explained at all. Like I said, I think this might be typical of the genre and since I don’t read things like this often I’m a little in the dark, but it’s still noticeable.
The foils of Zephyr and Tartarus are very interesting — the gods are screwing with Zephyr, yet he’d be a fool not to take up their offer. Tartarus wants the chance to redeem himself and thus is satisfied with the arrangement. In a way, Tartarus needs Zephyr to succeed in gaining his strength so that he can get his rematch. This puts the two of them on the same thematic plane, even if they aren’t quite equals in might.
The story is pretty good! I like stories with religious themes, and this one was done well. While the religion aspect of the story isn’t developed super deeply, it serves as a nice backdrop to the action.
My only gripe with this story is that Zephyr is pretty pretentious, and while it does make sense for him it also gets annoying. Still, it didn’t really detract from my enjoyment, but it’s worth mentioning.
Overall, so much fun. Truly a wild ride with beautifully stunning artwork. The book is honestly worth it just for the art. While the story is pretty good, it’s the action and character art that make this book worthwhile.
This is a really rich fantasy world with lots of familiar tropes without feeling derivative. It makes use of regression and standard dungeon settings, but the overarching world is a completely original fantasy universe. There's obviously local and global political machinations going on and the main character is overpowered without being comical about it. He's got deep grudges and a storied history that make him a darker than average reincarnation/regression hero.
Another great point is the art - it's excellent. The colour schemes and characterisations are really engaging and beautiful. I got a real sense of the mystical, heavenly realm after death, as well as the grungy life of a temple slave.
My main issue is that it's not as engaging as I was hoping. It's very much a slow burn, and there are fewer plot hooks than I'm used to. I'm not emotionally hooked on Zephyr's journey, or on his plotting to escape his situation and get revenge. I don't actually have a good sense of who he is and what motivates him. The secondary characters haven't caught my attention, nor evoked my sympathy. I'm not really rooting for anyone.
Because of that, I read on for a few episodes after the end of this volume, but ultimately abandoned it. I might have pressed on if I knew the story was finished, but it's currently ongoing and I don't have the stomach for a disappointing non-ending after investing so much time.
Doom Breaker is another fantasy webtoon where a guy is fighting to save the world. I do like to try these, since you never know, but mostly the problem is that these series are so similar to one another. Zephyr, a fighter, is the last survivor after to world has ended and eventually gets slain by a Demon Lord, Tartarus. But, he gets miraculously reincarnated with all his memories thanks to the gods that think he's amusing. Now he needs to start from the beginning, since he's thrown 10 years into the past and he needs to prevent the upcoming destruction. So, the plot is interesting, although nothing new. It's just that killing monsters and collecting mana from dungeons gets boring pretty fast. There's nothing else to the story yet and it feels like your basic D&D stuff.
The art is OK, I like the vibrant colors and facial expressions. I also enjoyed how we get inside the other characters' head, which was super nice. Well, there's hardly anything going on inside the head of Zephyr, so no wonder. If you like stories like this, then this is surely for you. I kind of want more and something refreshing, but I haven't found it yet.
I just finished Doom Breaker VOL1 by Blue-Deep and here are my thoughts.
Zephyr is human… The last one fighting the evil plaguing the earth after the Gods had abandoned it. The war he is fighting comes to an end when he is killed by Tartarus… When all seems lost, Zephyr is reincarnated to save humanity.
Trouble is its 10 years in the past and he has none of his physical strength and is branded a slave. It’s a game between gods but can he have his revenge or will he repeat the mistakes of the past?
WOW. I was hooked! Have you seen the artwork in this graphic novel? It is on FIRE!!!! Some of the best artwork I have ever seen.
I have a real soft spot for Zephyr. He was determined and so fierce and oozed epicness. I was rooting for him right from the get go.
I enjoyed just how action packed this volume was. It was go go go all the way through and I loved all the cool battle scenes and don’t even get me started on how magnificent the monsters are. So creepy!!
I am so lucky that @webtoon sent me the next volume right away because I would have been jonesing.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Doom Breaker follows Zephyr, a man sent back on earth by the Gods to get a second chance at saving the World. Returned to the time when he was a temple slave, 10 years ago, he has to start from scratch and without his physical strength but with some new perks gifted by the Gods who are apparently rooting for him. Will he be able to save humanity this time around, or is history doomed to repeat itself?
𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Not gonna lie, I was first drawn to this one because of these epic illustrations, and it did not disappoint. I really loved the drawing style so much, and it really matched that action, fast-paced story. The style of the story is really reminiscent of the whole gaming world. You go on quests, raid dungeons, fight monsters with different skills, use potions, mana, special powers and all, it’s really quite faithful to that universe.
I can't say I grew attached to any characters through that first volume so it was a bit of a slow start for me but I was definitely intrigued to read more of this story.
Thanks to Wattpad for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.
No właśnie.
A huge thank you to Webtoon Unscrolled for the free book! All opinions are my own.
This was an exciting first volume. I have to say though that his “curse” took me completely off guard. It was neat how the author incorporated video game elements (such as inventory, special skills, and dungeon raids) in a way that made sense. My only concern is whether the MC will have an impactful character arc. As of this point, he seems to be an indestructible, unstoppable force (which doesn’t leave much room for growth). Perhaps it will be more emotionally driven, with his growth involving the ghosts of his past? Only time will tell. As a whole, this was a good read that I would recommend for any fan of adventure games.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me review this arc for my personal opinion.
This was an action packed story! And I like the art style. That's about as much all the good I can say. The story's MC is pretty strong but he ends up being spoon fed to much by the gods, and him being sent back into the past to "redo" and save his loved ones felt a little weak sauce as a driving point. It's just basic. I don't think I was its target audience maybe someone who is more masc minded or someone who liked Solo Leveling and DBZ
This wasn't the normal isekai that I expected. It reminded me a lot like Re-Zero, except the hero doesn't have a reset point. Zephyr is OP, but not by much, and it's really the side characters that make up the story that get it to shine. I would say this is a solid read and I hope gets an anime adaption as the artwork is very heavy and much better suited for anime than a comic.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review an ARC. This is my honest opinion on Doom Breaker Volume 1.
The cover really drew me to read this book. I love the artistry in the story, it was amazing especially the first couple of pages which really drew me into the story. I like how Zephyr, as the last warrior for humanity against the demons, is reincarnated back into the past in order to change the story. The storyline is really good, although I think more can be done with building up Zephyr's character, in giving him more depth and personality. I can't wait for the next book to come out to see how it progresses.
One human, Zephyr, is given a second chance to take down the demon, Tartarus, to prevent the world's destruction. With any deal, there is a catch. He will have to go back 10 years and relearn all his fighting skills from scratch. He can gain some bonuses by keeping the gods who arranged this deal entertained. With its vivid and dramatic depictions of fight sequences, it feels like a story/video game come to life. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this! The ending left off on a good note, keeping readers wanting more in the next volume.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for this advanced copy.
Let's give more credit to the one who responsible for change the layout from scrolled version comic into tradisional one. It was really good and easy to read.
Doom Breaker was one of my favorite webtoon series. It was perfectly drawn and had such a good story development. I hope this traditional comic version would make more people to read it.
Really good! It reminds me a lot of Solo Leveling, but with two majors bonus. First the game based leveling life is less obvious than it was in Solo Leveling, and second, the darker side of it with the cult and all that make it more interesting for me. A nice surprise that I will continue reading for sure!
Webtoon isn't known for having amazing writing, but there are some good series, so I'm usually up for giving these kinds of books a chance. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it's not. This one wasn't. I don't care how cool of a premise or art there is, bad writing will kill the mood real quick. And indeed it did...
This graphic novel is a thrilling start to the series. Zephyr was sent ten years into his past, as amusement for the gods. He knows what will happen in his life but he has to alter his past to be able to beat the god Tartarus in the future. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
That...was interesting. Not usually what I go for because it was super high action and definitely a shounen-type webcomic. It has potential, but I don't think I'll be holding out for more or looking to read more.
this is very similar to solo leveling but not as in depth. i don’t know how i feel about it so far, it could end up going the same path or it could (hopefully) add a new view on this type of over powered main character storyline.
