Chelby Duncan never knew who her parents were, or why they gave her up.
Knowing when people belong together is what she's best at doing, but her success at fixing people up isn’t exactly career-worthy. Chelby’s foster father is a retired general who is running for Senate, so joining the army is the natural direction for her to take when she turns eighteen.
At the Military Entrance Processing Station, she is given a blood test and discovers that she’s not human.
She’s Fae, and she has second blood type that they can’t identify.
Warned to run before she is taken by Sector Nine, Chelby flees the MEPS.
Her panic leads her to an encounter with Dr. Gould, who gives her his card and tells her that the Paranormal Mercenary Corps can help her.
Chelby finds it hard to believe any of this is happening until she returns home and armed men from the mysterious Sector Nine show up to take her away.
On the run for her life, Chelby calls Dr. Gould as a last resort.
The Director of the Paranormal Military Corps takes her to their headquarters in the Colorado Mountains, where she meets other supernaturals and learns about the Fae powers that were suppressed when she was young.
Emergent powers she can’t control, a whole new world to fit into, and a mentor who’s determined to help her discover her true potential.
Between training and forging bonds with her new teammates, Chelby has her work cut out for her. It’s enough to put the threat she escaped to the back of her mind…for now.
But Sector Nine aren’t done with Chelby, and a betrayal awaits her when a training exercise goes awry.
Will Chelby overcome the heartbreak that awaits her at the secret facility? Can she master her new powers and break free of Sector Nine’s grasp before it’s too late?

I'm so disappointed with the immaturity of the characters in paranormal books. What is it that attracks these kind of writers, or characters?
Once they told her about the glamour, all the writer/character could think about, was how beautiful she actually is. Gone are thoughts of danger. Critical thinking. Listening to gut instinct. No, it's all about... oooeee, I'm so pretty!! Every second sentence was about how pretty she actually is or will be. <*eye roll*>
Add to that 2 irresponsible adults! Firstly, the way the doctor acted was just weird. Yes, get her to safety. But then start talking! Explain to her why she can trust them. Don't just expect it. Prove it. Also, a girl was just chased, almost kidnapped, is scared and confused and spent hours at night in the rain, and you just leave her in that wet clothes because proving to her she's actually pretty is more important? How shallow!
Get her dried, fed, taken care of make her feel safe. Explain things to her. Prove that she truly is safe and in control of whatever decisions like staying or leaving. THEN worry about some type of glamour! And before just removing it, first test how it works, why it's there, etc. Don't just stumble into someone's personal space and demand they remove a protection someone else probably put there for a reason!
Urgh. Then waking up in the pink room with 2 adult men spending 3 days alone in it with her, a teenage girl? No females around? Who took care of her bodily functions? C'mon! And the first thing you do is grab a mirror to show her how PRETTY she really is?
Gah. I couldn't take anymore PRETTYNESS after that and stopped reading.
Chelby has the emotional maturity of a 14 year old. Which became a huge disappointment. It had an interesting start but it went downhill pretty quickly.
Not only does her mood, and suspicions, go back and forth like crazy but there isn't a lot of logic behind it. Like "My one trainer didn't defend me against the other trainer when that trainer was scolding me for something I didn't do" Yes? AND? It's a coworker, and you did something that was against the rules. Of course you're going to loose points for it (they were doing a point system), it doesn't matter if you weren't at fault. You wanted to be an army brat, you know how these things go. It's about discipline. And then getting super mad at said trainer when that trainer told another trainer to test her on magic. Like.. YES? THAT'S WHY YOU'RE THERE NO?? To learn your magic and kick ass? (and let's not forget the repeat "oh no I can't do this thing with magic even tho I did it earlier")
And let's not forget the super hot super asshole dude she's drooling over, where she constantly goes "why is he so mean to me? is it because he thinks I'll take team leader?" repeat that 5 times. With an added of "oh he's not so bad" because being an asshole out of competition makes it okay?
And then said dude does a 160 in attitude change and now is going around BLUSHING at her with absolutely nothing happening between them for him to change his mind.
(he also had the emotional maturity of a 14 year old, kept giving her hateful looks for.. random ass things. Like a horse choosing her over him. Like that's her fault)
And let's not forget how this tomboy who didn't do make up, and was never the pretty one got double dared to go to the spa and pretty herself up and of course she did. Without blinking. Even got a bikini wax. Because not only was her ugly self hidden behind a glamour and she's really beautiful, but she needs that makeup for.. reasons. (yes it was the hot jerk who dared her, and I don't understand it. He goes from making fun of her for looking like a homeless elf to then later mocking her for being too dainty??)
There was very little consistency in this story, which was a huge disappointment. It's like the author wrote scenes at random and then just glued them together without actually reading the whole thing in one sitting.
This was a pretty fun hidden destiny, magical academy book. However, for those romantics like me ... think Harry Potter's later books with little to no outright romance.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. Welcome to the Paranormal Mercenary Corps. She’s Fae, and she has a second blood type that they can’t identify. It’s enough to put the threat she escaped to the back of her mind, for now, but Sector Nine aren’t done with Chelby, and a betrayal awaits her when a training exercise goes awry. Will Chelby overcome the heartbreak that awaits her at the secret facility? Can she master her new powers and break free of Sector Nine’s grasp before it’s too late? I guess we shall find out. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I highly recommend to everyone.
I’ve read some of the other reviews and I feel they were a little harsh … yes Chelby has a lot of character flaws - however, if you consider the back story of being stuck in the foster system for years. When she was eventually fostered, it was by a family who treated her as significantly lesser than their daughter and even told her she had to leave home as soon as she graduated ie when any foster payments they had received stopped!
So is it any wonder that her character is perhaps not as mature in some ways as with others. Also she was initially treated as a kind of special project by Dr Gould and the commander, so is it any wonder that she was confused and angry when they didn’t stick up for her? She is a young girl who does not remember ever being loved or cared for in her life, and she suddenly find out that she is supernatural - after people are trying to kill her … maybe she is not going to react with the level of maturity you would expect from another 18 yr old.
The writing is OK, although to be honest the way that sounds are written in capitals makes me wonder if the author is of a younger age as well. No I haven’t looked as I just want to enjoy the story and although the capitals are annoying - I can overlook them.
Anyways back to the story … I really enjoyed it - it’s kind of like chick-lit fantasy! As in, it’s not too heavy and is a very sweet story. By this I mean that it is a easy read story set in the supernatural world. You can see the signs that it will turn into a romance - and although I’m hoping for something out of the ordinary like a polyamory romance - I think these hopes will not come to fruition.
Overall, it’s a nice light read and I do recommend it
Chelby (pronounced Shelby) has been in foster care all of her life and when her current foster father, retired General Duncan, expects her to enlist in the military, off she goes. Unfortunately, she’s not accepted – it seems her bloodwork came up as non human. When she gets home, a group of men are also there, trying to take her away. She runs and manages to escape with the help of Dr. Gould, who had given her his card as she left the recruitment centre. It seems that there is a part of the human world that is aware of the supernatural one and of course wants to destroy everything and everybody, It seems that there is another world out there, one that Chelby doesn’t know about but is part of. Her blood says she is part fae, part unknown and hybrids are a major problem. I’m sure more about that will come. Upon learning that she has a major glamour on her, they manage to remove it partially. She is no longer the ugly duckling but is now attractive and has fae fire elemental powers. She is entered into a recruitment class for the paranormal mercenaries – a group of six, two shifters, an orc, a vampire and another fae who seems to think he’s better than everyone else. Besides working as a team and learning tactics, history and weapons, they also get to be chosen by a Pegasus which will be their lifelong mount. This book has some action, a fair amount of magic, great characters, interesting story and some humour. And a couple of big surprises near the end, I can’t wait to find out more. It’s a fairly quick, easy read and I quite enjoyed it.
Book one in this series, introduces us to Chelby (Shelby) Duncan. On turning eighteen, she goes to sign up for the army, only to have her world come crashing down around her when it’s revealed that she isn’t even human. Rescued by the Paranormal Mercenary Corps, she enrolls in a training program with them, and starts to learn about who and what she is…
This has a soft cliffhanger in that although we are left without anyone being in immediate danger, there are lots of questions left unanswered and at the ending everything is in flux. That being said, it’s not a book ending where you’re left biting your nails, just wanting more! It’s a good read, with lots of angst and action, and is somewhat in the style of an academy fantasy/romance series (not surprising considering the authors). It’s light on romance (there are attractions but no actions), heavy on the unanswered questions, and set in a fascinating universe. I look forward to reading the next book in series, and seeing if all my guesses are correct!
Recommended for contemporary fantasy and academy fantasy fans.

Teamed with shifters, another Fae , and a Orc, this is Chelby's new life and as she is finding, a new family. As her powers are revealed so is the trauma and fear she suffered as a child, will she gain control or lose everything. The characters and story line are believable and it holds your attention, I look forward tot he next in the series.

Call Sign: Cupid is the first installment in co-authors M. Guida and Michael Anderle's Paranormal Mercenary Corps series. 18-year old Chelby Duncan has been in and out of foster homes since she was abandoned by her mother. She's also lost memories of her past before she was 8. Chelby has the curious ability to know who should be with whom like Cupid. On her 18th birthday, with the urging of her foster father, Retired General Robert Brooks, who is also running for the Senate, to join the military, Chelby is hopeful she's get in. On the day of her testing, however, things don't go as planned.
The thing to ask yourself is do you like Michael Anderle books? If you do and you've made it through the entirety of his vampire space opera, this is to your liking. If you're more a fan of magical schools for teenagers/ young adults to learn their powers, this is going to leave you feeling unfulfilled. Unfortunately. Personally, I made it through half of the space opera and a handful of the spin-offs (Nothing ever came close to the first couple of books) and this seemed all too familiar of the later books in that series oddly. I think I read 3/4 of it and skimmed the other quarter. I will probably try the second book after I read some of the other Kindle unlimited titles in my queue in case it's better written but I don't have high hopes.
I like the basis for this story. I also like the world i see glimpses of. I would like to continue it. However, the main character is annoying. Poor me on repeat gets old. I gave a little since she is only 18. However, it distracted a great deal from enjoying other aspects of the book. I also found the writing a little choppy. I'm all for a hidden back story that gets eluded to with more to discover. However, I didn't find this one well written. Of course that could be due to annoyance at the main character. On top of oh woes me she wants the army but can't follow simple rules lime getting up and showing up on time. There wasn't enough character development to make me think book two is worth my time.
This was a fun read. Human girl finds out she's not human after all but fae - and she's being hunted. Just turning 18 Cheryl wants to enlist in the Army which pleases her foster father (ex-military general). But when her blood tests come back, the lab nurse tells her to run - fast!
It turns out there is a hidden realm just outside the city where a group of super naturals - fae, werewolves, vampires, orcs, etc., reside, and they've been fighting to save the various super natural species from Section Nine - a military branch that hunts down and kills any super natural they can capture.
Fun, snarky heroine with a team of friends who starts training to learn how to kick some Section Nine butt ...
A short and quick review for me today. I finished this book in one sitting, and while it kept my attention throughout, it wasn't really my cup of tea. So I'm rating it a 3.5☆
While I know a lot happened to Chelby and she got shock after shock, it just all felt pretty... superficial :( Or maybe it's just me demanding too much. Yeah, that's possible as well.
Anyway, I missed character depth and more worldbuilding. The pacing and flow were good, and so was the writing.
This would be a perfect book (at least this first book) for the lower YA range as there is no spice nor anything traumatizing in this instalment; However, I don't know if that is still the case for the rest of the series.
I'm guessing (or hoping?) this is a first book. The writing is really choppy and I feel like I'm reading about a 14 year-old instead of an adult. Yes, I get she's emotionally stunted by her life experiences, but this takes it too far to the extreme for someone we're supposed to see as a hero--eventually. The rules and consequences throughout the book are ridiculous and seem like a parody of what someone might think the army is. Not only is the heroine pathetic but she refuses to accept the evidence from her own senses. I am just not getting what I expect from an MA collaboration. I really hope things get better.
Call Sign: Cupid (Paranormal Mercenary Corps Book 1)
Call Sign: Cupid (Paranormal Mercenary Corps Book 1) 😲🙂😍 Wow I loved this story and I cannot wait to read book 2, and what happens next!!!! Ms. Guida is my all time best author and now so is Mr. Anderle is making me like his writing. There is so much going on. From awakening powers, secrets/memories coming to light, new relationships beginning, and so much to write without spoilers. That ending was amazing!! This book is well written and drew me in after the first page. Definitely recommend this book /series !!!! Now need to start book 2!!
4,5 stars for Chelby Duncan and her team of supernaturals
That story was so cool. Like a pattern you know by heart but the weaving was unique and I enjoyed every single second of my time with that book.
Chelby grew up in foster care and suddenly she learns, she is a fae with a second bloodline mixed and there is an academy where she can follow her path, that was not possible in the human world. A new team that has to form and the leader has to be established on the way. Funny and sweet and really lovable characters. I have no clue yet, who turns out to be main character counterpart but I am good with all of them. 😂 Got the whole series in a box set now. 🥰
This is an interesting fantasy world and story. I think there were some repetitive parts and character building could have been more. Perhaps it’s because this all happens quickly and we really don’t learn much that I feel this way but this felt almost like half a book.
It feels like it suffers from digital book money grab where everything is rushed without enough information or they call a few chapters a book. Which I find both annoying.
Anyways it isn’t bad, I have ideas about reveals so I will keep reading.
This is the kind of book 📖 that you need when you have had a rough day. The heroine doesn't know her own history or, more importantly, her own strength. When she becomes an adult, everything comes together rather quickly when the evil guys try to kidnap her. Fortunately, her new friends, who just happen to be supernatural, step in to help out. A quick read that makes you smile while feeling good about the good guys and gals and allowing you to hate the bad ones. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Chelby is the focus of the book that follows her as she embarks on life after foster care. She quickly learns that she is a paranormal and is brought into the Paranormal Mercenary Corps. What follows is the slow path to learning who she really is, the powers she has, and finding a family for the first time in her life. The character development of her, her 5 team mares, and some of her trainers is well done. The world view is exposed as Chelby learns about herself and her world. This book has a conclusion and is clearly the start of a series.
Chelby is living with a foster family and about to join the Army when she finds out she is not who she thought she was. I really enjoyed this first book in the series and can't wait to read more. All of the characters are great and so is the storyline. I am looking forward to finding out more about Chelby, the other characters and the mysteries that surround them.
This is my first time reading anything by either one of these authors. Chelby, pronounced Shelby, has been in foster care all of her life until the General and his family take her in. When she turns 18, Chelby tries to enlist in the army and is warned to run because of her blood. Confused she returns home and has to flee. This story is awesome and extremely interesting. It help my attention and I absolutely loved. I could not leave a review at the end of the story.
I still haven't warmed up to the heroine, she was annoying at the start. Also adding extra thoughts in italics makes it seem like someone/something else is involved in the thought processes. The whole "pow pow kacha" thing was just silly. I suppose this is a Y/A but still.
There is a plot here, so I do want to know what happens. Fingers crossed for book 2
Chelby (pronounced like Shelby) is a foster kid looking to join the army now that she is eighteen. Something goes awry during her intake standard medical exam. She discovered she wasn't human and the paranormal world exist. Now she's being hunted, but she's not alone she has help. Will this help be enough?
Reall great start to this series, exciting and intriguing!!!!!
Congratulations to M. Guida and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
This was an ok book and story line. Like many of the books in this genre/shared world, it was quick to ready with a long and arduous story line that ends quickly and decisively. Entertaining and worth the price as a Kindle Unlimited option. I wish these had more depth but appreciate authors using Kindle Unlimited.
This was a really good book. The World building is amazing and interesting. The characters are great and i really like that there is a bigger group that the main character is a Part of. The probably male main character is an arse. I kinda liked it. As i did this book. Worth a read to every Fan of the paranormal.
I saw potential and it is book one and M is a very good storyteller buy I found it a lot more difficult to read than other books. Maybe 2 has it more “together”
Chelby has been shunted around in her childhood through foster care. When she turns eighteen and goes to join the army her life takes a major turn and never will be the same.
What a start to a new series. I read this in one sitting, I just couldn’t put it down. Plenty of action, lots of nasty villains, but also some nice characters I want to know more about and also solve the mystery, who is Chelby.
