4.25⭐
Genre ~ romantic suspense
Series ~ Jubilee, Kentucky #2
Others in the series ~ Don't Back Down #1
Setting ~ Kentucky
Publication date ~ July 11, 2023
Page Count ~ 463 (p + 21 chapters +e)
Audio length ~ 10 hours 48 minutes
Narrator ~ Traci Odom
POV ~ multiple 3rd
Featuring ~ police procedural, murder, child shot (he's fine), old family secrets

Shirley's family is in the midst of a scandal, so they head back to their hometown to start over.

I really enjoyed Shirley's relationship with her 4 adult sons. Aaron is the main~est character of the 4 men. He's on the police force and he meets Dani when she drops off an old journal she found. I really liked them together. He was so sweet and protective of her ~ it was a bit of instalove.

Cousin, Cameron, and hero dog, Ghost, are back and doing what they do best ~ helping with the investigation. I really liked the mystery of the secrets the journal held. There were quite a few POV's to keep track of, but I found it easy to do so.

Overall, it's fast paced and action packed. I'll for sure continue on with the series.

Series notes:
Cameron played a big part in both books and his life has progressed in this installment. If you don't mind a spoiler regarding him, then it would be fine as a standalone.

Narration notes:
An obvious well seasoned narrator. Each character was distinct and she showed great emotion when necessary. Well done.

The family ties that bind the Pope family are tight, very tight and when something tragic happens to one, they all pitch in to help and solve the problem. Family is what is at the heart of this series and what drives this book. That and a sweet romance between two people who have been scared by their pasts. Throw in a treasure hunt and the story told in an old family journal you have a book that holds your interest and more.

When Shirley Wallace and her son's lives are upended by her husband's actions, she and her four adult sons move to the resort town of Jubilee, Kentucky (think Branson, MO) and change their names to Shirley's maiden name of Pope, leaving the tragedy in Arkansas behind them. Her son Aaron's wife left him, he was fired from his job, and he is looking for a new start without the taint of his father's actions. The Pope family welcomes them to Pope Mountain, and Aaron is hired as a police officer in Jubilee. Then a teen Pope cousin is shot on the mountain at the Big Falls and left. Aaron, as a law officer, is determined that the case be investigated properly, and to see justice done.

Daniella “Dani” Owens is a teacher with secrets of her own. She sees a man fall in the creek parking lot, quickly gather his scattered things and leave in a hurry. Dani finds what turns out to be a very old journal and gives it to the police requesting that her name not be disclosed, not wanting to be tracked to Jubilee. Too late. Dani's past has followed her. Aaron is smitten by the beautiful, cautious teacher who found a piece of Pope Family history and is now in danger.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

What an amazing story.
A heartwarming story of family and friends. Of sadness, hardship and hope for anew beginning. I felt so bad that Meg had to die that way. So sad. I loved every minute of the story and hated to see it end.

Last Rites is the second book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series. The series follows the Pope family. This one is mostly Aaron and Dani's story. Dani has moved to Jubilee to get a fresh start. Aaron and his family have finally come home to live among their kin and start a new life as well.

I was so looking forward to this one. I had enjoyed the first book and that mystery. So, I thought I'd love this one. Sadly, it really fell short of my expectations. The book felt very unfocused to me and was all over the place. There were too many points of view and story-lines. There was a romance, but that was just kind of meh. There was no suspense. The two potential mysteries were easily solved and wrapped up just over halfway through the book. The danger that Dani could have been in never really surfaced. The way her attacker was caught was kind of laughable and ridiculous. The only thing I did like was the hunt for Meg and how her story was wrapped up. That was bitter sweet. So in all this one was a miss for me. Hopefully the next visit to Jubilee will be more focused and suspenseful.

Shirley Wallace and her 4 sons are at last free of her ex-husband. They move to Pope Mountain after her mother dies; and change their last name to Pope. Aaron is the oldest and lost his job and wife after his father went to prison.
Dani has moved to Jubilee after her Ex-boyfriend went to prison for trying to murder her. She is a 1st grade teacher. She sees a man coming up from the creek and he falls and drops a gun, shovel, and a journal. She takes the journal to the police department. She meets Aaron at the police station.
There is a story of a shooting; treasure hunting; stalking and looking for a missing woman. This is book two and it would help if you read it first. I loved this book and Sharon ties all the people together and solves all the question in this book.

4.0 stars. Romantic suspense. The story continues on from book 1 with a growing cast of characters. Once again a nice mix of romance and suspense. Aaron/Dani are the featured romance, the suspense is rather low key this time. A big emotional focus of the story centers around a the mystery of a founding family member who died hundreds of years ago. Moving on to book 3 to see what happens next.

This tale moves along well. Cameron and Rusty (from the first book in this series) are mentioned often. Aaron and Dani are the romantic couple here.
Shirley Pope and her four sons are all featured as well (Aaron is a policeman and her eldest son).
Policing, family, mystery, suspense are some of the themes ….
Personally .. I was disappointed in bedroom description. Closed door policy (as in previous books) is preferable for this reader.

Last Rites by Sharon Sala is the 2nd book in her romance suspense series, Jubilee, Kentucky. I am a fan of Sharon Sala, having read and loved her previous series; and I looked forward to reading this series, as the first book was great. The story starts off with the Wallace family, after her abusive husband is convicted of murdering two store employees, and everyone treats them badly in their Arkansas town. After her divorce, all of them lost their jobs due to her husband’s terrible actions. Shirley and her four sons decide to officially change their names to her maiden name, Pope; and they move to her childhood home in Jubilee, Kentucky. When they arrive in Pope Mountain, they are welcomed with open arms, moving into the house she had inherited from her deceased mother.

The oldest son, Aaron was a police officer in Arkansas, and now in Jubilee, he is offered a job, especially with his overall experience and record. When a child is shot, Aaron becomes involved the investigation, and a young woman comes to the police station to drop off a journal she found on the street. Aaron meets Dani Owens, a new resident in town, who is an elementary school teacher; she tells him she saw the man drop something while in a hurry, and gets her to help get a sketch of the man. The journal plays an important part in the story, as it relates back almost 150 years (Civil war), when a member of the Pope family disappeared and was never found; as well as the possibility of buried treasure (gold).

Dani just recently moved to Jubilee, as she was terrorized by a former boyfriend and his brother, and their attempt to kill her. She lived in fear, until she was able to trick her attacker, and save her own life; with the attacker in prison. When Aaron learns more about her past, he realizes she is very much in danger, by the other brother, and he makes sure he sets himself to protect her, and manages to stop the attempt on her life. In a short time, Dani and Aaron will fall in love, as they go from being friends to lovers.

What follows is an exciting, tense story that held my breath throughout; with two attempts to murder innocent people. It was great to see Cameron Pope and Rusty (book One), as well as their wonderful dog, Ghost. Cameron was determined to discover the secrets of the journal and past history of Pope Mountain. I really loved Shirley, and her wonderful 4 boys (including Aaron), and how they became so happy returning to Jubilee. I also loved Aaron and Dani together.

Last Rites was so very well written by Sharon Sala. I loved the characters, the town, and especially our couple. I can’t wait to see what Sala has next. If you like exciting suspense, and romance, I suggest you read Last Rites.

Quick Summary: A romantic thriller plus

My Review: Last Rites by Sharon Sala is part of the Jubilee, Kentucky series.

This book had a lot of interesting components. There was never a dull moment, that’s for sure. It involved a woman who was stalked/harassed/assaulted, two homicidal sociopaths focused on revenge, a family who suffered as a result of domestic violence, a murderer who was pure evil, a Civil War linked to an unsolved mystery, and more. The romance was revealed as the story unfolded.

My Final Say: Last Rites was heavy on character storylines. It seemed to have three main threads.

Readers who appreciate stories that are strongly grounded in family and/or stories where new beginnings and deliverance are realized will enjoy this book.

I didn't realize it at the time but this is book two so I have to go back and get book one now. I don't think it will take away from the story to much though.

I have been really enjoying Sharon Sala's books so much. This one I thought was really good also. There was a lot going on it, I would say at least 3 different stories within the story and they all get told, solved and answered as you read along.

I think this is sorta of like the Blessings, Georgia series where the book is about a particular person in the family. You will see bits and pieces of other people that you have met previously but the focus is mainly on one person/couple. Its just ongoing and I really enjoyed that in her Blessings, Georgia series. So far, this series is about 3 books but the Pope family is really big so I hope she will extend this series out quite a bit.

WOW! Lots of mysterious events solved in this story! Quite a few were absolutely heart breaking!

Nevertheless, it was fascinating to watch Aaron and Dani's love grow and blossom. Unfortunately, Dani is running from a lethal stalker and his dangerous twin brother, both of whom tried to kill her. Fortunately, Dani's grandfather taught her how to shoot a gun and Aaron took care of the rest.

Awesome story, except for what those heartless Confederate soldiers did to "Cries A Lot", Meg , Brendan Pope's Indian wife back in the 1800's., over a trunk full of "gold". That part broke my heart and made me cry. I hate how greedy bullies take advantage of those who are unable to defend themselves.

I feel this book had a lot of unnecessary description and repetition. For example, Aaron would tell one person something that could be a whole paragraph or page and then turn around and tell another person the exact same thing. This happened many times. There were lots of stories and plots and it just didn't do it for me.

Great Romantic Suspense

Danger has come to the area around Pope Mountain. Danger from the past and the present....even as the mountain welcomes long, lost kin and newcomers just looking for a place to feel safe and call home.

I adored this tale of danger, suspense, interesting twists, and finding home in a person and a place.

Last Rites by Sharon Sala (Jubilee, Kentucky #2) 4 Stars

This is a start of a new series for Sharon Sala after retiring her long running Blessings, Georgia series. While this the second in the series, this book could almost be considered a start since this book and the ones after will focus on a set of brothers (Aaron, Sean, Wiley and BJ). This book focuses on Aaron Pope and Dani Owens, an elementary school teacher with her own problems. Like Ms. Sala’s other books, there is the encounter, a sense of danger, a mystery or crime solved and a happy ending.

I really enjoyed the small town feel and the sense of community in Ms. Sala’s book. Like a mug of hot cocoa and blanket, this book provides a sense of comfort and escape for a short amount of time. I look forward to the next book – Heart Beat (February 2024)

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for this ARC.

This was another riveting book that was hard to put down. The characters are fascinating and the storyline was well-written, engrossing, and skillfully woven together to encompass past and present generations of Pope family history. This story includes treasure hunting with tragic consequences, a family mystery that spans generations, a vengeful stalker with a twist, deep family roots, friendship, and romance. When tragedy strikes on Pope Mountain family bans together to protect and support their own.

In this second book, we get to revisit the generations of family on Pope Mountain and learn a bit more about their past history that has been hidden for many years. We get to revisit with Cameron, Rusty, and Ghost from Don’t Back Down and meet many more interesting characters – Dani, Shirley, and her sons and watch Aaron and Dani’s relationship grow from friends to more. I really enjoyed the way the author set up this series with multiple POVs that lets us see into their thoughts and follow the storyline through the characters.

Shirley Pope Wallace and her sons leave a life of hate and persecution due to tragic circumstances beyond their control to return to their familial roots on Pope Mountain hoping to start again. Dani Owens is also looking for a fresh start after a horrible ending to a bad relationship. Getting out of the big city and leaving the awful memories behind, Dani finds a job as an elementary school teacher in Jubilee but steps into another mess that puts her in Aaron’s path. Chance, fate…whatever you call it, these two were destined to meet and I loved seeing them find the love and acceptance they both deserved.

Another great read in the Jubilee, Kentucky series. It’s not necessary to read the first book, Don’t Back Down, but there are characters from that story that make an appearance here. Plus, it’s a fantastic book and you can see how Cameron and Rusty met and see more of Ghost!

I loved it!

Thanks to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Casablanca, and Sharon Sala for the ARC of this book.

Last Rites is Sharon Sala’s second book in her new romantic suspense series, Jubilee, but can be read as a stand-alone. This book is a must-read for all fans of Sharon Sala and romantic suspense. The story contains a sweet romance between loveable characters and an enthralling historical mystery without descriptive sex or violence. I couldn’t put this story down! It deserves more than 5 stars.

Shirley Wallace and her four adult sons return to her childhood home on Pope Mountain in Jubilee, Kentucky, after her abusive husband is convicted for murdering two store employees in their Arkansas town. Shirley inherited her late mother’s house and they all legally change their last name to her maiden name, Pope, to further disassociate themselves from scandal. All of them lost their jobs in Arkansas due to her husband’s misdeeds, and Aaron’s wife of a few months leaves him.

Oldest brother Aaron Pope was a police officer with a spotless record and quickly gets hired by the Jubilee Police Department. He becomes involved in an investigation of a young cousin’s shooting and meets the attractive Dani Owens. When he realizes that she may be in danger, he sets himself up as her protector.

Daniella “Dani” Owens is a second-grade teacher who has relocated to Jubilee from Louisiana after a former boyfriend and his identical twin brother stalked and terrorized her. Dani doesn’t have a lot of faith in law enforcement after they failed her and she wound up saving herself from being murdered by Tony Bing. When she sees suspicious activity while hiking and recovers a Civil War-era journal, she becomes a potential witness to a crime.

Naturally Dani and Aaron fall in love while assisting the police in tracking down the shooter and solving the old mystery surrounding the Pope matriarch. In Sharon Sala books, the villains always get what they deserve. Cameron Pope and his large extended family were introduced in Don’t Back Down and serve as minor characters throughout this story. I can’t wait to read more stories featuring the other Pope brothers!

Just love the way the author has several different stories going on that all will be inner woven together. Just the right amount so not to be confusing. Once again we are in Jubilee, KY and some new Pope’s have found their way home to Pope mountain. Escaping her abusive ex husband, Shirley with her 4 grown son head back to Pope mountain to reclaim her inheritance and to find peace. Aaron the oldest finds a job with the local authorities, a job he had before and loves.
Dani has bad memories of a stalker that was finally caught and put in prison but needing a fresh start accepts a job as a 1st grade teacher in Jubilee, KY. As she is getting familiar with her new hometown she see a man running from the creek who falls and things from his backpack spills out. Starting to go to help the man she sees a gun near him and backs off into the shadows. The man bleeding picks up his stuff and throws his things into his car and drives off. Dani spots something that he left behind and goes to retrieve it. Thinking turning it into the police be the best way to find the owner. She turns it in to Officer Aaron and so starts the mystery, present and past and the sweet romance between Dani and Aaron.
This book can be read as a standalone, but the 1st in the series was very enjoyable so why not read it? I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #NetGalley #LastRites

Sharon Sala delivers another outstanding story.

Last Rites takes us back to Pope Mountain, where everyone living there is family and no matter what happens they’ve got each others backs.

In this story you get stalking, murder, and old mystery, putting the past to rest and of course family and finding love.

I cannot get enough of this authors writing. She writes exceptional characters and thrilling storylines.

Last Rites is the second book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series, but can be read as a standalone. However, I recommend reading the first book Don’t Back Down because it was excellent.

Last Rites by Sharon Sala, book two in the Jubilee, Kentucky series, is a wonderful heartwarming and heartbreaking romantic suspense in a small Kentucky mountain town, where tight-laced clans abound, and outsiders are looked upon with suspicion. Shirley Pope Wallace and her four adult sons leave a life of hate and persecution after her abusive husband is convicted for murdering two store employees in their Arkansas town. All of them lost their jobs in Arkansas due to her husband’s misdeeds, and Aaron’s wife of a few months leaves him. Shirley inherited her late mother’s house in Jubilee, Kentucky and hoping to start again they decide to return to their familial roots on Pope Mountain. To further distance themselves from the scandal, they all legally change their last name to her maiden name, Pope. After a grand welcome by the Pope family, the boys start looking for employment; Aaron is once again a police officer, and his brothers are finding their own ways as well.

A young boy is shot on the mountain and left for dead. A short time later, Daniella “Dani” Owens, a second-grade teacher who relocated to Jubilee from Louisiana, sees a man stumble into the town parking lot and fall. He seems to be in a big hurry to leave; gathering the dropped belongings as gets in his car and drives away. Dani notices something on the ground where the car was parked and goes to see what it is. Finding a Civil War-era journal she turns it over to the police. Dani wants to remain anonymous if possible, especially after traumatic events that caused her move to Jubilee. It turns out the journal is telling of the history of the Pope family on the mountain. While a young boy fights for his life in the hospital, the search is on for the shooter, Dani’s life is in danger from a stalker from the life she left behind, and mysteries involving the first Pope family are brought to light. Aaron becomes involved in the investigation of hisyoung cousin’s shooting and meets the attractive Dani. Once he realizes that she may be in danger, he sets himself up as her protector. Chance, fate or destiny, Aaron and Dani find the love and acceptance they both deserved while they assist the police in tracking down the shooter and solving the old mystery surrounding the Pope matriarch; all while the danger that followed Dani to Kentucky finds a deserving end. Cameron Pope, Rusty, and Ghost and his large extended family were introduced in Don’t Back Down and served as minor characters throughout this story.

Sharon Sala has a gift for entwining multiple characters and storylines while still keeping the main plot the center focus of the book. Somehow she is able to blend and connect all of the characters, provide a back-story and share enough information to know what's going on and where each character is coming from. I highly recommend Last Rites, a must read, to other readers and look forward to more stories featuring the Pope brothers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Shirley Wallace and her four sons return to her childhood home on Pope Mountain in Jubilee, Kentucky. They have had a rough life and want to escape the scandal that her husband was involved in and begin anew, so change their last names to Pope, Shirley's family's name. This story is about Aaron Pope, the oldest of Shirley's son. He has returned to his life as a police officer, and ends up in an investigation that leads him to Dani Owens. with a lifetime of hardship behind them, hoping to find peace and begin their lives anew. Eldest brother Aaron Pope returns to his life as a police officer, and is settling in just fine. Then Aaron's investigation into an attempted murder leads him right to Dani Owens. She has found an old journal that may finally solve a long standing family puzzle. The problem is, someone else is after the journal and the secrets it might hold.

Last Rites is the second book in the Jubilee, Kentucky series. You can read it as a standalone, but one of the characters, Cameron Pope and his dog Ghost are the main characters in the first book. If you read this one first, it will contain many spoilers if you plan to read Don't Back Down. I love the family ties in this book. Blood runs deep and they will do whatever they need to help and protect one another and those they love. Both Dani and Aaron have baggage and scars from their pasts. Can they move beyond their fears and have a life together? One thing that I am not a fan of is insta-love and that happens here, but there is a log going on with a treasure hunt, a murder and a mystery that it I was able to look beyond that. This was quick story that moved quickly, which I liked. I am really enjoying the Pope family and look forward to seeing whose story is next in this series. I did a read/listen with this book and enjoyed both formats. Traci Odom is a wonderful narrator. She gives each character a distinct personality and her storytelling skills added to my interest and experience with this book. I recommend either format.

This is an unusual love story and mystery that mixes modern times with the past. The book takes pace place in modern time. However, the actual story takes place in the past. It is about the marriage of Brendan Pope, founder of Pope Mountain and his wife Meg. Readers will find this book to be very thought-provoking and unusual. It describes how Brendan met his wife Meg and how they founded the mountain.

When Shirley Wallace is severely beaten by her husband, the community persecutes her and her four sons because they are related to her imprisoned husband. Since all of them lose their jobs, Shirley decides to move back to her home town in Jubilee, Kentucky. She changes her name back to Pope, her maiden name, because her entire family lives there.

Dani comes to Pope Mountain when she finds a diary many miles away, behind a shelf in her library. It was written by Brendan and recounts his life with Meg. The diary ends with Brendan sorrowfully commiserate about the
disappearance of his wife.

Shirley’s oldest son, Aaron, who was a policeman before they moved to Pope Mountain, he manages to get a job with the Jubilee police department.

Dani brings the diary to Pope Mountain because she believes that the town will want to preserve their founder’s diary and keep it for everyone to read. Dani meets Aaron when she brings it to the police. The entire town believes that Meg was murdered and hidden somewhere so no one can ever find her. Thus, they decide to look for her so they can bury her near her husband.

This story is a page-turner with non-stop action and intense suspense. Readers will become fascinated with the two beautiful love stories. One is between Meg and her Brendan, and the other one is between Aaron and Dani. Readers will also find themselves sitting on the edge-of-their-seats as they become engrossed in waiting to find out what actually happened to Meg and why.

Book 2 in the Jubilee, Kentucky series. Works as a stand alone.

The Wallace family, Shirley and her four grown sons, return to Pope Mountain near Jubilee Kentucky after the death of Shirley's mother. Shirley's (ex)husband disgraced them and the seek refuge in Shirley's home town. Eldest son, Aaron, joins the local police force. Soon he finds himself in the middle of a lot of action. A young boy was shot, and a woman witnessed the shooter leaving. Only the woman is also on the run from her past. Aaron juggles everything- working to solve the case, keeping Dani safe, being there for his family, etc... And the more time Aaron and Dani spend together, the more he realizes he can't live without her.

First, skip the audiobook with this one. Stick to print. I found this annoyingly sappy most of the time. I think part of it is the writing, but part of it is the narration. The narrator uses a nauseating, overly happy inflection in every sentence. Ugh.

As for the plot, it is ok. It tries to do too much, therefore there isn't a lot of depth. A lot happens, but it is all resolved quickly. There isn't really any tension. This is the complete opposite of a slow burn, but not necessarily in a good way.

I was aggravated by one aspect of the plot- Confederate money isn't worthless. It has significant value as a collector's item.

Traci Odom narrates. I think I already covered my opinion on that well enough.

I am torn on whether or not I'd pick up any potentially subsequent books. I love romantic suspense. But this was more romance than suspense, and too insta-love for me. I'll have to think on it.

I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
