Holly's cauldron is bubbling over and ready to blow!
Following six months of intense training under some of the country's most skilled potion masters, Holly's head is full to the brim.
When she's offered a new assignment with the Supernatural Protection Agency, she jumps at the chance to take her newfound skills out of the workshop and into the real world.
What she didn't expect was to wind up tailing a suspected werewolf killer right in her own backyard.
Literally.
When another werewolf turns up dead, Holly and her roommates are locked in a race against time, and the killer might be even closer than they think.
Holly has recently finished six months of training under position masters at the SPA and her business is booming. As a result she's feeling pulled in multiple directions and overwhelmed. To top it off Holly seems to always end up in the middle of something. A cranky ghost landlady not happy with her potions, roommate troubles, boyfriend issues and her friend Nick going off the deep end over a women. What’s a witch to do?
One Bad Witch is the sixth book in the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery sereis by Danielle Garrett and is best read in order.
As things go if you read my last review on the last book, Lucky Witch, I felt frustrated with the relationship department and the drama the author added. I’m still perplexed in the relationship department. On one hand Holly is in a relationship with Adam, but the chemistry with Nick makes me question. By the end we have lines drawn and a clear path.
The mystery is frighteningly close to home and Holly must tackle the dilemma of keeping her job and what she’s doing a secret from her friends and boyfriend. What happens makes Holly think about her life and what she really wants. And, at the end, she and Adam have a talk that they really needed to have about the future and the present.
Fans of cozy mysteries with paranormal elements will enjoy this light and fun read. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.
In One Bad Witch, our protagonist & witch Holly has recently finished six months of training under potions masters and business is booming. As a result, she is feeling pulled in all directions.
Her part-time barista job, the potion orders and now a new assignment with the Supernatural Protection Agency makes Holly one busy little witch. The manor is getting a new resident and Holly’s assigned to keep an eye on her. The SPA believes she has connections to a series of wolf murders. With the help of her roommates and Nick, the local PI, she must stop the killer. Is it their new roommate? You’ll have to discover that for yourself.
Holly is in a relationship with shifter and roommate, Adam. Agent Bramble has sworn her to secrecy and she can’t even tell him. what she suspects, but he faithfully helps her. When Nick starts dating, Narissa things get a tad complicated. Vampires, twists and turns made for an addictive storyline.
The romance thread continues to perplex me, on one hand Holly is in a relationship with Adam, but the chemistry, denial, and friendship between her and Nick keep things on edge.
Relationships and interaction between this motley crew of friends added interests and we see growth and development in the overall series ARC.
Fans of cozy mysteries with paranormal elements will want to listen to this series. Amanda Ronconi is a favorite here at Caffeinated and has become the voice of these characters. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Well it's always something for poor Holly, right? Roommate troubles, a cranky ghostly landlady over her potions, an astounding request from her boyfriend, and now werewolf Nick has gone off the deep end over a woman who may or may not be who she says she is. Oh, and I forgot to mention there's a werewolf serial killer loose around Beechwood Harbor. All in a day's work for new SPA agent witch, Holly Boldt.
One Bad Witch is the sixth book in a series that works best when read in order.
I was uneasy going into this one. Anyone who read my review on the previous book knows that I was in quite the tizzy over the drama being flung about unnecessarily. But, this one, while exploring her relationships, was back to business for Holly. She has dilemmas over keeping her job secrets and now Nick being romantically involved in a suspect, but Holly is back on her usual game. Nick on the other hand? He was having his turn freaking out at his friends, but they have his back.
This one was nice and twisting for a bit with the mystery and I did enjoy that. I also enjoyed seeing Holly face several choices for her future. Evangeline gave her some pretty good advice and a chance to find perspective. I look forward to seeing what comes next for them all.
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I am finally reviewing back in the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mysteries. I've been scrambling to get up to date by reading this series using Kindle Unlimited. I think the books have gotten better. Witch Way Home is my favorite in the series so far, as Holly starts to take action to learn skills and improve her life. She continues to do so, and makes further choices towards her future in One Bad Witch.
I'm not a big fan of Adam but we don't get as much of him (similar to Lucas in the Ghost Mysteries) other than he lives in the house, so he is around more. We mostly get Holly's frustration with him as he is protective and ignores her capabilities somewhat. I'm more fond of Nick, or I was until this book where he doesn't listen to Holly at all.
The mystery is frighteningly close to home and Holly is not too happy to be working with the SPA to gather information. She is instrumental in solving the case. It makes her consider what she really wants. At the end, she and Adam finally talk about their wishes for the future and the present.
Narration: Amanda Ronconi is a well-loved narrator and handles this series well. She is a master with these quirky, paranormal stories. I listened comfortably at my usual 1.5x speed and enjoyed the preformance.
I had a hard time with this book. Kinda dragged for me and I considered giving up on the series. I have difficulty believing Holly and Adam are even a couple. They don't really come across as any more than friends. I don't need some grand romance but it so he nice if Holly actually truly cared about anyone. I'll try the next book and hope for less disappointment.
My oh my, I am flying through this series! These books are short and easy to read. Which is one of the reasons why I love Danielle Garrett’s books so much.
I enjoyed this book! I didn’t feel as connected to it as I have with a few of her others in the series, but that’s okay. I still am loving the heck out of these books. These characters feel like a family to me and I adore them so much.
I’m looking forward to the next one! I’m halfway through this series and it makes me so sad that I’ll finish it soon. All good things must come to an end, I suppose.
There was a lot going on in this one, mostly connected to Holly's personal relationships with everyone. Adam thew Holly a curve ball with his question, I think the final answer she gave him was a good one. Things were in flux with Nick, but by the end they figured things out and Nick let Holly know he valued her and knew she had great potential. The SPA gave Holly a big ego boost, she made the right choice there for her and what will make her happy. And once again, despite this book starting with the Manor getting a new roommate, they are looking to fill this person's place. It certainly feels like other than our core group, that roommate spot is one filled with lots of crazy for everyone to deal with.
Holly and her roommates once again get embroiled in a mystery involving the SPA. In this episode Holly gets asked to help investigate a series of murders of werewolves, as well as to spy on a new roommate, who may be more than she seems. The mystery was fun, and I do enjoy these characters. At the end of the book Holly seems to be at a turning point in her life.
In this book, Holly and her eclectic group of roommates are back at it, solving mysteries in Beachwood Harbour. Holly has been busy with potions, balancing her own business and working with the SPA. Meanwhile, Nick appears to be drawn to a new tenant, Narissa, a shifter. Their lives take a dramatic turn when another murder occurs, adding yet another mystery to unravel. The group must work together to solve the case, all while navigating personal dynamics and magical challenges.
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 5 Story 4
It’s been a bit since I checked in with Holly and her loveable band of misfits – and she’s been adding to her own to-do list after finishing her potion-making class. With her barista job, the potions orders and a new assignment from the SPA in the form of a new resident in the manor that she needs to keep tabs on – things are certainly busy.
And then there’s her relationship with Adam, her vow to not share her investigations with him and the off-the-charts chemistry with Nick, who she’s placed solidly in the ‘friend zone’ - much to my own confusion as they are wonderful together...but. And there are new murders to solve and plenty of twists, turns, dead ends (pardon the pun) and lots of advice, chatter, conversation / interference from her own friends and supporters who love her dearly and want to help.
Amanda Ronconi is the voices of these characters and instantly I knew who was speaking and their actions and moments all worked to move the plot forward. I love Ronconi’s work in this series, and she’s added a blast of fun and mischief to an already laugh out loud, often slapstick situational mystery series that just gets better and better.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Although I’ve enjoyed the Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mysteries and Haven Paranormal Romance series, it’s great to finally get back to where it all started with Holly Bolt. One Bad Witch is set about six months after the conclusion of Lucky Witch, the 5th book in the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mysteries series. Lacey moved back home (Once Upon a Hallow's Eve) and the three remaining roommates of the Beechwood Manor have had a string of horrible temporary roommates pass through their door. Holly has been working at the Supernatural Protection Agency (SPA) learning all sorts of new potions and skills. She and Adam are still going strong (although he doesn’t like she has to keep her work secret). She’s still working part-time at Siren Song with Cassie (who is planning her wedding to Chief Lincoln), and her own potion business is booming. All seems nearly perfect until Holly’s SPA boss, Agent Bramble, asks her to spy on the Manor’s newest resident, Narissa, in connection with a string of werewolf murders.
I have to admit, I was a bit worried about this one after the initial set up. First - all is not well with Adam and Holly… AGAIN *heavy sigh and eye roll* He wants to move out of the manor and into their own place, and Holly is… unsure. This back and forth, wishy-washy attitude of Holly’s has bothered me for several books, and what bugs me the most, is that by the conclusion of each story, everything seems good and solid between the pair, only to have uncertainty creep in again in the next title. Couple that with Holly’s requirement to be secretive and spy on their roommate, and I thought for sure Adam was going to walk away. With that said, Ms. Garrett wrote a wonderful story, and I forgot all about my initial concerns as soon as the heart of the story took shape.
Holly always seems to find herself in the middle of danger, but this time around, she’s there on official SPA business. I liked that she got to really see the inner workings of the SPA and what it means to be a field agent. She does a great job, giving her reason to seriously consider her future plans. The mystery of who is killing the werewolves also provides Holly time to finally discuss with Nick his change. They don’t always see eye-to-eye during the story, and I like that they have to talk things over and work out their issues.
Narration: As always, Holly and her friends are brought to life through the performance of Amanda Ronconi, who has consistently done a wonderful job. Her interpretation of Holly is always spot on - a bit flustered and frazzled, but with an air of determination - just like Holly. Ms. Ronconi convincingly portrays Holly’s thoughts, concerns, and expressions. Her female voices are each a bit different and well-suited, and she gives frequent paranormals their own fitting voices. However, her male voices, while appropriately deeper and extremely enjoyable, all sound very similar.
In the end, One Bad Witch is a fun mystery with a lot of introspection by our heroine, Holly. I like that things come full circle, and Holly works out some important life decisions. The story almost had an air of closure and finality. Overall, I liked the story and where it ended.
My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.
After listening to several of Scarlett’s stories in the Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mystery series, I was glad to spend more time with Holly again. Don’t get me wrong, I love Scarlett and all of her ghost friends. I just missed all the other paranormal creatures in the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery series.
In this story, Holly and the gang have yet another roommate in the manor. Narissa is a shifter. And the SPA (Supernatural Protection Agency) have asked Holly to keep an eye on her, because Narissa is a person of interest in a case of werewolf deaths.
This is another fun addition into the series. I enjoyed my time with the characters that I really love. We even get to have Holly talk with Lacey (it was nice to hear from her again). Cassie, the human best friend of Holly, is planning her wedding to the human, Chief of Police, Chief Lincoln. There is a bit of relationship drama between Adam and Holly as they discuss getting a place together outside the manor. There were also issues with Nick, as he shows interest in Narissa, the “person of interest” and Holly following the couple.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store next for the people of Beechwood Harbor, from whichever series. I do see that Danielle Garrett has a new series coming to audiobooks, A Touch of Magic Mysteries. I don’t know much about it, but Amanda Ronconi will be the narrator for that series, too. I can’t wait to see what that will be about. I love the Garrett/Ronconi pairing.
Narration Amanda Ronconi is a queen when it comes to funny paranormal stories. She is one of my all-time favorites. She does such a great job in bringing out the humor in a story. I don’t really know how to describe it other than her “ability to bring out the humor in the story”, but she does it and does it extremely well. But, there you have it. If you haven’t tried her, I highly recommend her work.
**I'd like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Holly has been working with potions both for her own business and for the SPA. When agent Bramble askes her to watch the new tenant who seems to have some knowledge about a couple of werewolf shifters. Although Holly is not really comfortable with the idea, she doesn’t want to have any problems with the SPA if she says no. The watching is made difficult by the fact that Nick seems to be enamoured by the new tenant, a shifter named Narissa especially when there is another murder. This book shows how Nick is handling his acceptance into the local werewolf pack, as well as more discussion between Adam and Holly about their relationship. This has some new, interesting characters, a mystery, some humour and a good story.
The premise for this book had a lot of potential, but issues such as mixed up homophones, comma abuse, incorrect verb forms, bad grammar, and the glaring character name/history inconsistencies from previous books in the series ruined it. "Motivations" were *meh* at best.
There were a lot of things about this book that made me think it was slapped together by an intern and never fully vetted by the series creator. *sigh* Hopefully, the author came back from vacation and used a proper editor for the next in the series.
More fun and adventures with the cast of characters. Still enjoying the series and waiting for various relationships to get figured out. The central plot of this installment was fine, but had a bit more action and higher stakes than some others in the series! Still loving the world and the magic system.
I love Beechwood Harbor ghost Mysteries they are hilarious and especially this series I really like a lot I like all the books but the reason why is she does such good detail in describing every little thing and it's a really funny book like I laugh a lot and you can picture everything especially the characters and what they're doing at the time and it's just amazing and this series all the series gets me out of my head with scarlet and with Holly
I had to backtrack every now and again to keep minor details straight, but otherwise, it was a good story.
Now on to my Spoiler Review and some issues I want to call attention to between the last book and this one.
1) After the last book, I refuse to be Team Adam no matter if they stay together for the rest of the series.
- Why? Because Adam is a very crappy person and has some very toxic traits being pawned off as him being a shifter and therefore "overprotective" of Holly. He basically uses his being a shifter to try and control how Holly does things and what Holly does, period.
In the last book, he was very, very condescending to her. Treated her exactly as she called it, like she was a child and incapable of taking care of herself or anyone else. All while using the "I'm just trying to protect you...oh oh it's a shifter thing." and it just screamed Grade A Narcissist.
2) Nick was almost given a fair chance after the last book to become Holly's new chance for love but, of course, was pushed aside for Adam's toxic self at the very end.
We come to this book, and while his behavior is pushed to the background, we still see him trying to push Holly in a direction I honestly don't think she would naturally go in. He wants to go all out and rent their own place and while he knows she's busy with her work and everything else, he has to stop and nitpick it with "can we talk yet" or "have you thought about it" or "we can go look at rentals" every time he sees or calls her...despite her reminding him she's busy.
WHO DOES THAT?!?! You see your girlfriend is overwhelmed and overworked, she tells you as much and all you care about is moving out, which if you remember is what he threatened her with in the last book when she wouldn't get on the same page as him. He basically told her, "Do my things, or I might have to move out." Then, in this book, he goes, "Do ya one better, let's both move out and get our own place."
I mean, yes, at the end of the book, she stands up for herself in a way. But it still rolls back around to the ending Adam wants, him and her in a house of their own possibly in the near future.
3) Nick deserved a fair chance in this book considering that while he was always annoyed with Holly's initial interference in the beginning, he began to seriously respect and support her, unlike Adam. This poor man has been battered, beaten, and bruised to begin with; forced to become a werewolf, and then has his heart crashed again in this book! Like come on... why are we supporting toxic masculinity over a man who has proven time and again he is so much better!!! Heck I would have even given Holly to Agent Blair over Adam.
End Rant....moving on to the next book in the series, although I am not going to get my hopes up.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Holly is still a terrible person Adam needs another girlfriend Holly is controlling of EVERYONE around her, literally, her relationship ( if that’s what it is) friendships, work, you name it, she’s controlling. She does not like to hear anyone’s point of view but her own and becomes angry at the drop of a hat, especially with Adam.
Seriously, what’s the point? Why is this book about her? No character growth and we are in BOOK SIX!!!
Again I'm charmed by the residents of Beechwood Harbor with it's blend of magic, mayhem, humor and fast paced action, I literally don't want these to end. Yep I love this series so much.
After training for six months under the most prestigious and skilled potions masters in the the country, Holly is ready to take her new found skills out into the real world and put them to the test. But when she is offered a new assignment within the SPA, she doesn't expect it to be tailing a suspected werewolf killer in her own backyard. However, when another werewolf turns up dead, Holly realises that the killer could be much closer than she thinks.
Since Lacey left the manor, Holly and the gang have been subjected to a number of unsavoury housemates that the SPA have sent their way, none of whom have stayed very long. With the arrival of a new housemate, Holly is called into SPA headquarters and tasked with spying on her which makes Holly uneasy. Matters are further complicated when her friend Nick shows an interest and starts dating her, which puts her and Nick at odds testing their friendship. Not only has she got her new assignment but her potion business is really taking off, as well as her studying under under SPA potion masters. After all Holly has been through it's really great to see her flourish, from social outcast to unofficial SPA consultant and having her potions license. I just wish that she'd learn to slow down and take time to enjoy her successes.
Adam has plans of his own which includes taking his and Holly's relationship to the next level but in true Holly and Adam style doesn't go according to plan. And the fact that him and Nick have finally become friends warms my little heart.
And if there's anyone who can get into more trouble than Holly it's Nick. He is now part of a pack and learning how to negotiate his place and feel accepted. But when he meets Narissa, Holly new roommate he falls hard and fast, the problem is she's under investigation and Nick won't hear a bad word against her. Foolish boy!
I'm off to book 7 as I can't wait to see what trouble Holly and the gang can get into next but whatever it is I'm looking forward to it. A fun easy read which I can't recommend enough 😁
I enjoyed this book. This book continues on from the last and I would recommend you read the books in order, to keep the continuity going. Don't worry you won't be disappointed, I haven't given this series anything less than a five star review, yet! This book is no exception. I want to say it is the characters that keep me returning but to be honest the mystery is just as good. The unusual cast of characters living all under one roof is fun, especially with there different personalities and powers but they have become one big family that will do anything for each other. Even bring a wand to a vampire werewolf fight to the death. Despite knowing (or at least thinking) we know who is responsible the mystery was engaging and had me hooked, just to see how it was going to turn out. Off to start The next book, actually I am loving this series so much it might even have to be the next three book box set. Holly time at the Supernatural Protection Agency as a potions master is going well, so well in fact that they want to put her in the field as an investigator. They need her to spy on her new housemate. There has been a number of werewolf deaths lately and every time her new housemate has been close by. With her friend Nick having only just joined the local wolf pack the last thing Holly wants is to hear someone is killing pack members, so she agrees to leave her lab and once again put her life in harms way to investigate . When the alpha's mate is killed, Holly finds herself with a seasoned partner and in the middle of a werewolf and vampire disagreement.. Can they find the killer? Especially as it seems Nick is dating the prime suspect. I like the narrator. She is the reason I started listening to this series in the first place but now I am hooked.
O.K. I've been falling behind on my reviews due to work issues and constraints but I can't bite my tongue any longer. Those of you who know me appreciate the fact that I'm a stickler for the correct usage of the English - and I do mean English - language. This is the first time I've felt the need to criticize one of Danielle's books on that score.
Let's see: first, '...pump the BREAKS???' Showed up several times. Who the hell proofs & edits these things? Learn to spell the damned word correctly BEFORE approving it for transcription! Which brings me to #2: "...she ADVERTED her eyes!" Not used as prolifically as #1 but still a glaring mistake nonetheless. There are several others I could mention but I don't have the time or energy to list them all here. My advice, as previously offered to such prolific authors as Morgan Rice and Quinn Loftis etc, is get yourselves a bloody dictionary or thesaurus. If you like, I have a saved copy of "Her Ladyship's Guide to The Queen's English." I'm sure I could figure out a way to lend it to you.
With regard to this particular storyline, I enjoyed it as much as every other Beechwood Harbour book I have read. The interactions between the characters are as complex and evolutionary as ever but I was able to spot the villain from a metric mile away quite early on. Still fun though.
Just try to fix those nagging details and I'll keep reading.
Wow, this book was wild. Holly is all over the place but in a good way but has a lot on her plate. Working for the SPA, Siren’s Song and her Potions business while maintaining her relationships. But it was quite fun, I love how Adam and her are working towards their relationship but definitely hits a big roadblock. I’m sad that Lacy is gone. I thought we’d get more of her in the book due to her Tomb Raider moment last boom. Eevee is adorbs and has really grown on me. I wish she was with Teddy but I’m glad she really goes into her mentality and how she lives her life. Cass and Sheriff Lincoln omg. I am happy for but I wish they went more into their relationship. But I guess there’s always the next book. What really drove me up the wall was Nick. This book I felt that he sort of lost that mysterious coolness about him. He got lost in the sauce without giving any spoilers. But yeah… he joined a pack and they seem like dicks. But I guess when you’re a freshly turned werewolf you wanna be with people like you. I hate how he treated Adam. But whatcha gonna do Lol. i think the love triangle is over, as Holly made it clear. Also I wish we went into Posey and Earls relationship. I felt that Earl just popped up out of nowhere in the previous books without much introduction. The mystery portion of the book was interesting. I think it’s gonna be interesting to see how the new villain plays out. I listened to this book on audible. Can’t wait to see what the next journey is!
One Bad Witch is the sixth instalment in Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery series by Danielle Garrett.
When the manor gets a new houseguest and Holly is approached by the SPA to spy on her, things get complicated once PI Nick gets romantically entangled with Narissa. It is followed by a pack member being murdered and Nick is now in the circle of suspiscion. With Holly's friendship with him on the line, she is running out of time to solve the mystery of the werewolf hunter.
Adam and Holly's relationship took some huge strides through this one which honestly made me really happy for them. One particular detail that I loved was how Holly did not jump at the offer of moving in and took her time considering what she wants in life at this point. Adam took it great too, being supportive of her dreams and that is a sign of one healthy relationship.
In the terms of the mystery, that was very entertaining as well. There was a certain point I began to wonder if Narissa really is innocent as Nick believes her to be and a book that makes me question a certain line of thought is automatically a good mystery imo. It was great fun watching Holly in the role of a quasi agent and made me a bit nostalgic to think about how far she has come since the series started.
Extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

Yay, a new release in the Beechwood Harbor series - I've been waiting for a new adventure from Holly and the gang! I'm already laughing and I'm only on page two!
Narissa is the new roommate at the Manor - but is she a friend or foe? And why is she getting so close to Nick? And how is Holly going to balance her personal life with the additional complication of her latest assignment? And most of all, who is killing the werewolves and keeping everyone on edge? The answers to all of these questions and more are revealed!
I really enjoy this series - it is consistently well written with a great cast of characters, a few of which have come and gone which was done in such a manner that you do miss their presence, but it keeps this series fresh. And if you miss them too much, the author has spun them off in their own series! Sure like the cover art on this one - very visually appealing. Can't recommend this series highly enough - very entertaining.
