Good mix of emotion, passion and travel/touring adventure.
This second chance in middle age romance is just as much Spanish travelogue as a romance. As Nita and Thomas unexpectedly meet again on the streets of Barcelona and start exploring the sights and tastes of Spain in summer together, they experience a closeness, companionship and passion that's been missing back in California, even if it's only a temporary blip before they return to their separate, lonely lives.
And although both in their fifties, these two find sizzling connection almost from the get-go. It seemed bittersweet though, because the certainty of a quick end to their time together hung over them on a daily basis. Nita is stalwart yet tragic, with a below average opinion of her ability to satisfy a partner long-term. Unfortunately Thomas waffles from building her self confidence up to reminding her that he does not consider himself available.
I must admit to finding the touring details a bit detailed and overwhelming but eventually I wanted to do some research of my own to find photos of the sights featured in the story, especially those in Barcelona and Seville. This novel stoked my interest in Spanish culture and cuisine.
It's an emotional story, held back from too much angst by the tourist experience. Although it's a standalone novel with no cliffhanger it does update the story of Dana, the female lead in an earlier book in the series set in Rome. But if you haven't read her earlier story it won't be a problem or detract from Nita and Thomas's romance. And, for readers exhausted by talk of COVID, no indication or mention of pandemic here.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
A beautiful love story for a somewhat older couple and an enchanting visit to Spain. I have never been to Spain, but should I ever get the chance, I would take this book along as my guide. Anita “Nita” Jeffries took several months off from her teaching job to care for her parents. After their deaths, she planned to return to her teaching assignment, only to learn that she must wait until the semester and take a computer class. So, since she has always wanted to visit Barcelona, now seems to be her chance. Meeting a man, Thomas Hunt, prior to her departure, she never dreams that she will see him again in Spain. She is still recovering from losing her parents and from a man who deceived her. Can she trust again? Thomas is still dealing with the grief of losing his wife after thirty years. Is he betraying his wife by his interest in Nita? Follow along as they travel through Spain and maybe there is a second chance at love for both of them. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation, from the author, for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
Siesta in Spain, by Jennifer Skully, is book 7 in the Once Again series.
English teacher Nita Jeffries is stuck in a job she hates and a past that still haunts her. After a brief fling with a grieving widower she can’t forget, she decides to put him behind her and plans a trip to Spain. After all, who can be sad in Barcelona, between the amazing markets, the stunning architecture, and the fabulous beaches? It’s the perfect place to forget the man who stole her heart.
Widowed over a year, Thomas Hunt is still grieving his wife of 25 years. She was his everything, and only months after her death, he has a brief encounter with another woman he can’t forget, but the guilt makes him pull away.
A business trip in Barcelona, connects Thomas with Nita again, and this time, he can’t walk away. He gives into his heart and tours southern Spain with her, spending the nights in her arms.
This is another beautiful second chance romance that had me rooting for Thomas and Nita from beginning to end. Loved this book!
Book 7 in this series I have been reading for a week - in this one Nita, a high school teacher, has a brief fling with Thomas while at a conference in Seattle. When she returns to her home in central California, her usual summer job has been given away and the principal of the school is making her life difficult. She decides to take a trip of a lifetime and spend 6 weeks in Barcelona. Guess who else she runs into again there? Thomas is still mourning the death of his wife the previous year, but when they meet again it will change both of their lives. If you love travel, food, wine and romance, this is a book (and series) you will enjoy!
I love that this series focuses of mature characters, providing hope for relationship love for later in life. I enjoyed the locale detail, it really put me there and made the story more interesting. It was delight to get to know Nita, she's a very realistic and relatable character much deserving of love. Thomas is all over the place emotional, rightly so, Nita tempts and challenges him to reach for a second chance to love. I received a free advanced copy and voluntarily chose to leave this review.
I love these second chance romances because they are fresh and heartwarming. With each book in the series I've felt like I was transported to the site of the story and a voyeur to the couple's, and it has been memorable and exhilarating. I think Nita eventually wore Thomas down and eroded his survivor's guilt. I was ambivalent about Dana's constant interference (whether well intended or not). The story ended perfectly, and I was happy Nita and Thomas each found resolution, hope, and love.
I enjoyed this book. Thomas is still mourning the loss of his wife (Carol) and has a one night stand with Nita. I felt for her as she tries to not fall so hard for him. Will he finally open his heart to her? Loved how they vacation together and get a second chance at love. It’s very heartwarming towards the end and I’m glad they finally get a happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I recommend this book.
