A Holly Jolly Christmas

Rate this book
Holly has one thing and one thing only to prove to her family - that she is a capable and organised adult, who can host the perfect Christmas day. The only problem is, Holly is neither of those two things. Disaster seems to follow Holly wherever she goes and this time, it's in the shape of The Christmas Ruiner; a smug stranger who appears at the worst of times, taking the last of everything Holly needs to impress her family. Cue her best-friend Shawn; knight in shing amour and all-round Good Guy. Even though he's made it perfectly clear that they are just friends, the lines between friends and something more are becoming blurred. The more time they spend together, the more Holly can't ignore her feelings. Can Holly pull off the impossible to put on the perfect Christmas, and capture the heart of the man of her dreams?

In this feel-good Christmas rom com set against a sweltering Australian summer, Holly learns that the less perfect life looks, the more perfect life feels. A HEA, friends to lovers trope, that will leave you laughing into your Christmas pudding.

So this was adorable. I would personally love for this to become a series of novellas because there are not enough Australian rom-coms. Especially not Christmas ones!!!

Holly was cute and I felt her pain a lot. Shawn was hot, although....Shawn, not a hot name but also Australian. Maybe that's why there aren't many Aussie rom-coms 🤣 but as it has NO SPICE, nothing past a blush and kiss, it not being a sexy name didn't really bother me.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. It's a cute romcom which is new for me, and I absolutely loved the Aussie Christmas representation! Bring me the BBQ and boardies wearing Santa!

Trigger warnings: shitty parenting

I was really excited to read this because, like, there are almost no Christmas romances that are set in the southern hemisphere and deal with a summer Christmas. More than that, it's set in Melbourne and the main character is a school teacher.

But there were a couple of reasons why this didn't QUITE work for me:
1. It was too short. It's less than 100 pages and I legit thought that ???
2. I had a hard time taking the name Holly Jolly seriously.
3. There were numerous Melbourne things in here that just...weren't right. Like, it says that Melbourne summer doesn't really hit until February. Untrue. It says that Melbourne doesn't usually get hot until mid-afternoon and that it then cools off in the evening. Untrue. It says that Melbourne is a humid heat. UNTRUE. It says that Safety Beach is on the way to the "glamorous parts of the Peninsula", like Sorrento and DROMANA?!?!?! First of all, Safety Beach is literally next to Dromana. Second of all, as someone who spent most summers in Dromana as a kid and teenager, uh, NO. Pretty sure you meant Portsea.

Look, is this me being extremely nitpicky over basically nothing? Yes. But those kinds of details pulled me out of a story that was all too short and a romance that felt like it was shoved in at the last minute. But probably if you're not from Melbourne, those things won't bother you in the slightest.

This book was a cute cosy little Christmas novella with no real conflict or character growth, that ultimately aimed to depict the classic "Aussie Christmas" vibes that are often lacking in other books in the genre.

Our two MCs were fine, (if a little neurotic when it came to Holly), and their plight to create the perfect Christmas in under a week was fine. But OH MAN were her family the literal worse humans on the face of the planet. I'm talking not one redeeming quality to be seen anywhere... I spent the entire novella inwardly screaming SEEK THERAPY on a page to page basis, and I honestly don't know why this young lady would offer to host an event for these cockroaches of society.

Anyway, this book challenged my conflicting feelings enough to be bumped up to a 3star... but if I think about it for more than a few minutes in any depth, it was a bit of a red hot mess.

This was super adorable and highly relatable! There aren't many books set in an Australian Christmas and this book just absolutely nails it. I really felt for Holly, dealing with her awful family and especially her mother more focused on making things social media ready than on making sure her children were happy.
Shawn was just adorable, so thoughtful and kind and his family, in the short glimpse we see, seem equally as wonderful.

I devoured ‘A Holly Jolly Christmas’ in one sitting, and I couldn’t have loved it more. This was everything you could hope for in an all Australian, silly season, romance read!!! I loved the Mornington Peninsula touch and that I could recognise every place the scenes were taking place. This was the perfect starter for my Christmas reads of the year!!

I loved the Australian setting! I loved that they trimmed the tree with koala ornaments (and I loved the koala ornament on the cover too!) and other tropical things since Christmas in summertime in the southern hemisphere.

However, this is not even 100 pages and needed to be a bit more developed. There were also quite a few typos throughout. The story was cute enough but it ended very abruptly as well. Still a cute read.

“I’m a constant disappointment to my mother - I’m single, came to my career late, and have only just managed to buy my first home.”

This character is 25. Screw you, book!

This is a cute little novella, and I mean little (it’s 99 pages), so it’s a very quick read. The story is friends to lovers, family drama, and it’s based in Australia. The Australian piece made for a fun change, especially since it’s summer for them at Christmas. It’s cute and sweet, I enjoyed it, but it didn’t blow me away. I feel like that most of the time with novellas though as I just never feel like there’s enough time to fully get invested in the characters. It’s worth checking out if you want a sweet clean romance.

this book was about 100 pages too long

like it wasn’t even short & fluffy cute, it was just straight up annoying

the writing felt really childish & there was so much unnecessary explaining going on that i felt like i was reading my recounts from reception, bcos let’s be honest, the entire plot is just this girl buying things for christmas & things going wrong

also maybe just me or fictionally, buying your SO tiffany for christmas just feels tacky?? like irl it’s whatever but the random “it’s really expensive” and brand drop feels so unnecessary

This book seemed like it would be the perfect type of holiday romantic comedy that could be turned into a Hallmark Christmas movie. I mean simply the fact that the main character is named Holly Jolly just screams perfect! This book was extremely fun and the shenanigans started early and did not let up until the end of the book. I mean it's 6 days before Christmas and Holly has absolutely nothing prepared for the family Christmas she is supposed to host. The characters in this book were amazing. Holly's mom is a social media influencer who takes it to the extreme and Holly is a legit hot mess.
Nobody has faith that Holly is going to be able to pull off Christmas and I have to admit I wasn't so sure either haha. A lot of the elements in the book are predictable but every single thing was presented with the perfect level of humor. I honestly felt bad for Holly at the number of things that went wrong for her. But have no fear, her best friend helps her to pull of a "Holly Jolly Christmas." If you want a quick, fun, holiday read with a million catastrophes and set in an Australian heatwave you really should read this book. You won't regret it.

BOOK REVIEW: A Holly Jolly Christmas 🎄

"Holly, you are my family. My chosen family."

Title: A Holly Jolly Christmas
Author: Katie Montinaro
Publisher: Indie Published
Genre: Holiday Romance
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Spice: ------------

•••••••••••••••••••••••

For those who enjoy Hallmark Channel Christmas romances or (for the portuguese) Fox Life romance movies, this book is IDEAL for you.

Holly was named also Jolly when she was born since she arrived on Christmas Eve, December 24th. She has a mission this year, which is to deliver the best Christmas lunch ever to her family - who happens to be messed up and OBSESSED with White Christmas - one tiny teeny detail: it's an Australian Christmas and it happens to be 43 degrees there.

The story revolves around Holly being 25 turning 26 and still not being an adult, according to her mom - and also, she's "old" and she needs a boyfriend fast to start thinking about growing a family. Right, there comes Shawn, whom the author gives us a perception of him being Keanu Reeves look-a-like. 🤤 no complaints there! I loved the little friends-to-lovers romance buildup Katie gave us, it felt as if I was really living the story and watching it on tv.

The reason why I didn't give it a higher rating has to do with spelling errors and also some of the story being kind of non-realistic. Like, just because Holly is 25 doesn't mean she needs a man/woman to marry and become an adult. I know there's a lot of families, mostly on the traditionalist side, who still think that way but it's just weird... Also, her mom was too materialistic and kinda bummed me.

It's still a really cute, quick read and it will make you feel all cozy and cute and ready to dig in with the Christmas spirit 🎄 I would recommend to anyone who's ready to embrace Santa's little helper, Mariah Carey.

Dear Santa,
I just have one request this year.... could you please deliver a sequel to A Holly Jolly Christmas? 96 pages just wasn't enough. I need to see how Holly's Mum turns the birth of her first grandchild into a whole new Instagram franchise. I need to see how Holly and Shawn navigate dating life when they are back at school. I need to see how Holly and the Christmas Ruiner manage to move on and become.... friends?

Thanks Santa....
Helen

Holly is determined to host the perfect Aussie Christmas for her family in her new home. A Christmas as different from all the perfectly curated, Insta-worthy Christmas Days that her mother insists on.

And one thing that Holly could never understand... what is the point of celebrating a White Christmas in the middle of the Australian Summer heat?

With the help of her "just friends" best-friend Shawn, Holly goes about creating a Christmas to impress.

Two problems.... there are only 6 days until Christmas and everything that can go wrong, does, and how can she convince Shawn that there is more to them than being friends?

Katie Montinaro is an absolute master of writing beyond adorable romances - from her #loveozya debut, The Girl in the Sunflower Dress (haven't read it? Then you definitely need to) - to her foray into adult fiction with A Holly Jolly Christmas.

It is so great to read a Christmas romance that accurately portrays an Aussie Christmas - from the crowds flocking to the Mornington Peninsula, the heat-waves, the beach, and the absolute absurdity of snow covered Christmas trees and ornaments.

This is the perfect read in the lead-up to Christmas - a book about families, friendship, and especially, the dangers of losing the ability to find joy in everyday life in the pursuit of everything being Instagram perfect.

I had a jolly good time devouring this novella from start to finish. A feel good Aussie Christmas rom-com. "Do you know why they never make holiday movies or write Christmas-themed books about a Christmas Down Under? I do. It's because there is absolutely nothing romantic about sweat dripping from your back, crack and thighs while you swat away flies under the summer sun."

I loved main character Holly, and Shawn - you will instantly fall in love with these two best friends. But will this be a friends to lovers? "Shawn is my knight in shining armour. As handsome as one too. And so completely and utterly off limits." Can Holly keep her feelings to herself? Pretty hard when Shawn keeps saving her Christmas. Even harder when Holly realises her true feelings. "It is in this moment I realise I am a goner. I've completely fallen head over heels for my best friend, and it's going to cause me a world of pain."

Imagine feeling like everything you do is a disaster. Imagine trying to pull off the perfect Christmas when everything keeps going wrong.

More than just a Christmas tale. A story about family and friendship. I adored this story and want more! I love the way Montinaro writes. Read it 🎄

Book: A Holly Jolly Christmas
Author: Katie Montinaro
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: None
Trope: Friends to Lovers
Couple: Shawn and Holly
Format: Physical Book

Thoughts: It was a short and sweet Christmas centric novella. The plot revolves around Holly who is trying to pull off an epic Christmas Day to compete with the Insta-worthy Christmas’s her mother usually throws however things constantly go wrong. In amongst the chaos though is her best friend Shawn who is her lifeline. Now I did like this, it was cute. However I couldn’t stand Holly’s family and Holly seemed too much like a doormat to me. I wanted nothing more than for her to stand up to her mother or cut her out of her life completely. She was a selfish horrid woman. She kind of ruined my overall thoughts on this book I’ll be honest. So while I did like it, it was also somewhat of a rage read for me.

“I have no doubt that this will go down as the best Holly Jolly Christmas, ever. “
-Holly

This novella is perfect. If you love a sweet fast read that will have you laughing very hard this one is for you!
Holly has to prove to her family she can host a Holly Jolly Christmas and in order for this to happen she needs to decorate her home perfectly! But little did she know her best friend helps her find the true meaning of a Holly Jolly Christmas during the summer heat in Australia! Of course nothing goes to plan everything hits the fan and her best friend becomes her knight and saves her Christmas.
This is a friends to lovers trope so if you love that then you’ll be into this novella.

Lots to like about this cute book: the size of it makes it easy to enjoy in one quick sitting; the backdrop of a country on the opposite side of the world helps me to escape my freezing climate; and the general Christmassy feel of it is perfect for this time of year.

BUT… can we PLEASE stop mentioning (over and over and over again) that people need to be moved out into their own (mortgaged) property and with a life-long partner BEFORE THEY’RE THIRTY 😱😱😱🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I felt quite stressed seeing that on paper when I really only wanted to feel all the Christmas feels not the OMG-I’m-a-failure feels 😢

Holly is hosting Christmas for her family this year - but everything is going wrong! Luckily her best friend Shawn is there to save the day. Can she impress her family and pull off the perfect Christmas? And capture the heart of the man she loves?

This is a fun, sweet, quick holiday romance set in Australia. I liked the characters, the story, the inside jokes and references that all Australians will smirk at. This could have done with a bit more editing as a lot of passages were over-written or a bit childish, but other than that - a fun read for the holiday season!

Perfect Christmas read 🎄

A fun read about one girl going to the ends of the earth to create and host the perfect Christmas in the hopes that she can finally impress her hard to please mother. It won’t be easy for Holly when it feels like the universe is working against her to make sure nothing goes right. Can she pull of an epic Aussie Christmas and fall in love? You will have to grab a copy and find out in this sweet romantic story that will be sure to get you in the festive season.

5 stars for all the Australian references

So this was the perfect little Christmas rom com. It felt very christmassy which I loved because so many “Christmas” books miss that mark.
The characters were loveable and the little twist had me smiling.
I loved the fact it was set in Australia with lots of Aussie references and locations I knew
My only complaint was I wanted more! I was loving this so much and it was over way too quick. Maybe we could get a series?

Cute short Christmas story. I wasn't sure at first who she was going to end up with but I am glad with who she is with. It was funny and light hearted. Holly just rolls with the punches as everything that could go wrong does but she finds love in the end.

It was really nice to read a Christmas story from a fellow Australian and fellow Melbournian! So many of the scenes could easily have been taken from my own family.
