When Patience Cartwright is stranded in her home town, the last thing she expects is a second chance at love...

Fiercely independent naval officer, Patience Cartwright has never had a place to call home, but she knows where she doesn't belong. After an unhappy childhood and a badly broken heart, she'll never return to the country.

But to save her career, Patience is forced to accept a secondment - to an environmental team working near the town where she grew up. There she encounters once more the infuriatingly attractive biologist Hugo Halstead - the very man she's sworn never to forgive.

Given their history, Hugo, as self-assured and honest as Patience is secretive and self-contained, has vowed never to trust her again, but that doesn't stop him feeling just as helplessly drawn to her complicated mix of courage and fragility as he ever was.

As Patience recuperates from a life-threatening illness in the small country town of Horseshoe Hill, she realises the beauty of the landscape and close-knit community promise something very different to the future she's mapped out.

But could the secrets she keeps and the shadows of her past, send her adrift all over again?

Penelope Janu

Penelope Janu writes contemporary fiction about clever and adventurous women who don’t mean to fall in love, but do. Penelope’s novels, whether coastal or rural, celebrate Australian communities.

Penelope is a lawyer with an interest in social justice issues and the environment. She has six children, a big dog, a distracting husband and never enough time to write. Now that she lives on a small farm, she also has an impossibly large garden, a vegetable patch and a herd of cattle that never get taken to market.

Penelope hopes readers will fall as passionately in love with her heroines and heroes as she invariably does. She has travelled to many places in the world but has lived most of her life in Sydney, Australia. When not reading or writing Penelope can be found walking the coastline, or in the bush (though she's not much of a walking companion as she plots as she walks).

Penelope loves to hear from readers so please contact her via Goodreads, or on her website http://www.penelopejanu.com, or email her on penelopejanu@penelopejanu.com.

When Lieutenant Patience Cartwright took a secondment after her latest blunder with a superior officer, she found herself not far from her childhood home in Horseshoe Hill, as well as being part of the team her best friend from when she was young also worked with. Determined to keep a handle on things, her work with Associate Professor Richard Lipman and biologist Dr Hugo Halstead progressed well. Working with and for the environment and everything it entailed meant Patience was content, as long as she wasn't expected to get on a horse. But when she collapsed and was rushed to hospital, it was the beginning of a long and tedious few months, with surgery and long days of recuperation in front of her.

Patience's naval commander had ordered her to do something which meant her keeping secrets from those around her. Now, as she recovered from her brush with death, she found it harder than ever to keep the secrets she held. But she must, even if it caused trouble...

Shelter from the Storm is another exceptional read from the pen of Aussie author Penelope Janu and I couldn't put it down. Patience and her sisters, Primrose and Phoebe, had had a harsh childhood, which turned them into independent young women, whose only thought was for each other. Patience was also a mathematical genius, among other things. The intrigue drew me in, the intense nature of the plot wouldn't let me go. Ms Janu has hit the nail on the head with Shelter from the Storm and I recommend it highly.

With thanks to Josephine of HarperCollins AU for my uncorrected proof ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Patience Cartwright is an officer in the Australian navy, she’s had issues with a superior and how she handled the situation has her career on the line. Patience is sent to work for a different organization, an environmental team, their studying the biodiversity and habitat of amphibians and it’s near her home town. One of the scientist is Dr. Hugo Halstead, her childhood friend and he’s the person who broke her heart years ago. Patience’s boss wants her to look into some suspicious activity within the research team and she has to do this without anyone noticing.

Hugo is extremely confident, dedicated to his job and has recently purchased an old property near his parents farm. Patience is a loner and lives on base, she loves her sisters Phoebe and Primrose and they have their own busy lives. Patience joined the navy to get away from Horseshoe Hill, her father’s a troubled man, when her first crush ended badly and she vowed never to return.

Patience falls ill, she has to recuperate from a potentially fatal infection, and she stays with Greta and Derek Halstead at Horseshoe Hill. Patience has to overcome her ill health and deal with experiences and memories from the past, they make her feel extremely uncomfortable and scared. Greta is the best cook in the world and a real mother hen, as Patience slowly regains her strength, she can relax and she starts to notice the beautiful scenery surrounding her and becomes reacquainted with people in the township that she trusted as a child. Patience has her future all mapped out, having the time to reflect on her career and choices she’s made, has her questioning if she’s on the right path, the feelings she still has for Hugo and should she follow her heart?

I received a digital copy of Shelter from the Storm from NetGalley and Harlequin Australia in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Penelope Janu, it won’t be my last and the story had me hooked from the first page. A well written and extensively researched narrative about being a woman in the Australian Navy, a smart one with a gift for numbers, math and finding out who’s been committing a crime. It's also an interesting story about the environment, biology, herpetology, frogs and how important they are to the ecosystem. The chemistry between the two main characters of Hugo and Patience is rather steamy (hotter than Greta’s bathing room) and Greta’s character is so kind, funny, her antics made me laugh and five stars from me.

Naval officer Patience Cartwright never wants to return to the country where she grew up with her two sisters and an abusive father. But after an explosive issue with a superior, the only way to save her naval career is to accept a secondment to an environmental team working near where she grew up. Biologist Hugo Halstead and Patience have a history. Patience cannot forgive him for the way he treated her declaration of love when she was nineteen. She has no option but to learn to somehow get along with him and others in the country town of Horseshoe Hill. Secrets abound, both within the job she has been sent to do there and in aspects of the past. After a serious infection Patience stays in the granny flat on the property of Greta and Derek Halstead, old family friends and parents of Hugh.
Patience is an interesting character with her mathematical expertise and regular counting that at times takes over no matter what she is doing. Not being a mathematically inclined person, I found this a little wearing after a while but that is just a minor issue in what is a well written story with a mystery or a conspiracy that needs to be unraveled. Hugo also comes across well.
This book starts in Jervis Bay which is very close to where we live, so that was interesting and it later moved to areas around Dubbo which were also familiar. Pace is steady and the tension ramps up towards the end. Themes of bullying and abuse are covered along with loyalty, friendship, family and romance. This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Will have to check out some of her others.
My thanks go to BetterReading and HQ Fiction for my ARC to read and review. I would recommend it to all who like a good authentic sounding Aussie story with great main characters. A couple of other minor quibbles but overall a very enjoyable read that will appeal to many.

WOW I have been waiting for Hugo’s story since Starting from Scratch and pairing him with Patience Cartwright, who I got to know a bit about in Clouds on the Horizon was just perfect, Hugo and Patience have a past, one that had many ups and downs, but will they finally find their happiness?

Patience is a naval officer and extremely independent this comes from the childhood she had were she stood up for her sisters to protect them, home is where she lays her hat is her saying, after leaving Horseshoe Hill years ago with a broken heart she vows never to return. But her career is on the line at the moment and she is offered a secondment to help out a group of biologists and scientists as they research water and the environment. This though will take her back to Horseshoe Hill and Hugo and his wonderful family, how will she protect her heart.

Hugo has bought a property in Horseshoe and is working hard with the environment team but when he learns that Patience will be helping them out he is not happy at all there are requirements of this secondment that he knows Patience does not have but he has no say in the matter and is drawn to his Imp where will this lead them?

Patience is working hard and getting on with the team when she falls dreadfully ill and ends up in hospital and needs time to heal, Hugo’s mother insists on taking her in to care for her, this brings her closer to Hugo but their relationship is still turbulent but as a reader I could feel the love between them they had so many issues to get over from the past, Hugo is so protective and Patience so independent and with the secrets Patience must keep this adds to the angst between them.

I loved this story, I have never missed a Penelope Janu story and I just think they keep getting better with each one, as I said Hugo has been a favourite of mine for a while and I loved Patience and being back in Horseshoe Hill. The research that must have been done is clearly seen in the story, the maths never my favourite subject was so interesting, hearing about Hugo’s favourite reptiles frogs the best, there are some wonderful characters in this one that also add to the story, this one is beautifully told with caring and love and it is a story that I would highly recommend, can’t wait for the next book MS Janu thank you for so many hours of reading pleasure and Hugo’s story.

My thanks to Netgally for my digital copy to read and review.

Shelter from the Storm is about love, trust and respect. Naval officer Patience Cartwright loved the naval; it was her only natural home. However, after an incident and to save her career Naval Officer Patience Cartwright excepted a secondment to an environmental team. The team includes biologist Hugo Halstead who Patience Cartwright promised never to forgive. The readers of Shelter from the Storm will continue to follow Patience and Hugo to discover what happens.

Shelter from the Storm is another fantastic book by Penelope Janu. I am always satisfied with books by Penelope Janu, and Shelter from the Storm keeps the tradition alive. Shelter from the Storm is another book I could only put down on the last page. Penelope Janu does a fantastic job of portraying social issues that can affect people in rural communities. I love Penelope Janu's portrayal of her characters and how they interact throughout this book. Shelter from the Storm is well-written and researched by Penelope Janu. I like Penelope Janu's description of the settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Shelter from the Storm will learn about the different Australian frogs and their importance in the environment. Also, the readers of Shelter from the Storm will understand the fear that can happen after a bad fall from a horse.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my AR copy for an honest review. I recommend this book.

I was thrilled to receive a copy of the upcoming release Shelter from the Storm by Penelope Janu, thank you to Better Reading aand Harlequin Australia for my preview copy of the book.

This book was wonderfully paced, full of surprises, and a beautiful rural romance. I found it unique and richly detailed.

Lieutenant Patience Cartwright has had an unhappy childhood and a broken heart, she never wants to return to her hometown but she has no choice but to accept a secondment nearby and ends up working alongside swoon worthy biologist Hugo Halstead. Patience ‘Imp’ is a character with many layers, she’s courageous, determined but also extremely fragile. She also has a history with Hugo and she needs to learn to trust again.

Janu delivers solid characters and I loved many of them. Hugo and Patience were a couple that just belonged together. Greta (Hugo’s mum) was such a warm, caring and delightful woman.

There are environmental, naval and family relationship themes and I enjoyed learning about the different types of frogs! 🐸 What a talented author, I enjoyed every page.

Patience Cartwright’s life is the Navy, all she wants is to be at sea. A clash with her superiors sees her with the choice of either leaving the Navy forever or accepting a secondment to work with a group of environmentalists on a national project.
There is only one problem, Hugo Halstead, the man who broke her heart years ago is head biologist on the team.

I love how Penelope Janu has delivered a story about the environment and biodiversity that is wonderfully informative and blended it with a heartfelt romance. In Shelter From the Storm Janu effortlessly weaves vivid descriptions of the countryside and local bird-life into the narrative.

Patience is a delightful character, smart and stubborn but also vulnerable. She is a character you will warm to right from the beginning. Patience excels at all things mathematical and she uses maths as a coping mechanism to calm herself by counting and doing equations and calculations in her head. I enjoyed this side of Patience because calculus has always fascinated me and I love anything numbers.

In Shelter From the Storm Penelope Janu touches on subjects such as occupational sexism, child abuse, PTSD, environmental issues and biodiversity. I loved all the information on frogs and it’s easy to see this is a topic dear to the author.

I totally enjoyed Shelter From the Storm brimming with secrets, twists and a heartwarming romance. It is a captivating story about breaking down walls, overcoming past hurts and moving on with your life.

It is time to get acquainted with Patience and Hugo, the endearing characters featured in Australian author Penelope Janu’s latest rural romance delight, Shelter from the Storm. A tale of second chances, fate, trauma, healing, trust, forgiveness and overcoming setbacks, Janu’s new release is a heart-warming story that is not to be missed this summer season.

Shelter from the Storm follows the life of Patience Cartwright, a strong minded and hardworking naval officer. Patience is a free spirit and she has never really been able to put her two feet on the ground anywhere. Haunted by a difficult and unsettled childhood, along with a grief-stricken heart, Patience knows her home in the country is not a place she wishes to return to in a hurry. However, in an unexpected career move, Patience is required to take on an assignment with a team working on a mission close to her former home. This leads Patience into the arms of Hugo, a talented biologist. But Patience vows to keep well away from Hugo, as she cannot find it in her heart to forgive him for a past mistake. Hugo also grapples with his mixed feelings for Patience. Whilst she infuriates him, his heart aches for her vulnerable side. Can Hugo let Patience back into his heart again? Will Patience finally realise that home is where the heart is?

What a wonderful way to kick off the new year! Shelter from the Storm is the ideal summer holiday pick me up. I always look forward to a new Penelope Janu release and Shelter from the Storm was one book I was very happy to receive for review via the publisher. Shelter from the Storm proved to be a sizzling summer read!

I have to say it was a pure delight to come back to Horseshoe Hill, a previous location choice from of one my favourite rural romance authors, Penelope Janu. Yet again I was immersed in the beauty of this quintessential Australian site, the embracing community fold and the fauna that populates this region. I was particularly taken with the equine therapy sequences and the frog research elements. It was a bonus to learn more about our animal life thanks to Janu’s efforts. We gain a great insight into some vital environmental themes around river habitats in Shelter from the Storm. I found this area of the novel really interesting. Janu’s passion for this area is evident and I appreciated her valuable insight.

Janu has a natural flair for romance stories and the love story featured in Shelter from the Storm is a heart-stopping one. With trust issues, previous heartbreak, emotional baggage but overwhelming chemistry evident from the get-go, readers will be entranced by this one. Expect plenty of tension and saucy moments too. But it is Hugo, the hero of the hour, that steals the show in Shelter from the Storm. I really did feel for Patience throughout the duration of this new Penelope Janu tale. I could understand our heroine’s guarded approach, frustration, opposition and fear of leaping into a relationship. I appreciated the full exploration into Patience’s past issues and her current situation. This relationship and second chance style romance offers guaranteed reading entertainment for rural romance fans.

A fine cast of supporting characters, such as colleagues and family members add to the drama in Shelter from the Storm. The audience will warm to figures such as Hugo’s mum and Patience’s siblings, who are all genuinely great protagonists to meet. Community ties are potent in this novel, drawing the reader in to the very fabric of the local region. With themes of naval pursuits, careers, past secrets, homecoming, illness, personal health, belonging and support, Shelter from the Storm is a book that will secure your heart and mind for the duration that you spend with this delightful read.

Thank you to Harlequin Australia for sending me this wonderful book.

This is the first book I have read by this author and Im very impressed and cant wait to read her other books.

I live in a area which has a naval base close by, the fact it mentions it by name and place I really connected with the characters and storyline. Its a book about second chance romance and I definately felt the chemistry between Hugo and Patience. I warmed to Hugo's family and enjoyed how they were a big part of the storyline.

It also discusses environmental studies and issues which I found interesting. Its a story about overcoming your fears. It also has a storyline which has a crime involved which was a nice diversion from the romance.

Thank you Harlequin for sending us a copy to read and review.
As part of our great rural romance slash fiction gang, Penelope Janu is a specialist in the genre.
A story that has a huge dose of heart, a splash of swoon, a shot of soul and a whole lotta entertainment.
Naval Officer and career minded Patience Cartwright has made the military her life.
She swears to never return to the country that gave her a broken heart and a sad childhood.
But when an incident forces her to accept a secondment, she is sent to the one place she swore never to return.
When handsome biologist Hugo Halstead is among the people who are a part of her past, she decides to tread carefully.
Then she gets sick and while recovering Patience sees things through different eyes including Hugo.
Can the present heal the past…….
It’s a delight to make a return trip to a familiar town with recognisable faces in a new, exciting story that comes with a big tick of approval.
A narrative that’s big on the romance but something I’ve always enjoyed about Penelope’s stories is she inserts that little bit more.
Awaiting the reader is a page turner escape with attractive characters, small town country vibes and an aura of passion in its many meanings.
Penelope writes with grace, emotion and focus, there’s much that goes into the plot including drama, issues, community, secrets and affairs of the heart.
Another winning title from a great, accomplished author.

‘Prim said we remind her of a Jane Austen novel. Have you read Persuasion?’

Penelope always guarantees an engaging read with her books and I am excited to say that Shelter From the Storm is my favourite of hers thus far. There is just so much to this tale which kept me engaged from beginning to end, especially if you love second chance romance with flavours of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

‘If I were on the ocean, I could search the stars to navigate. I’d know where to look for the lights. How do I navigate now?’

With much on offer, this really is more than your standard rural romance. Of course, there is a super relationship with a wonderful leading man but it is clearly evident the research that Penelope has gone into for this book. There is an engaging mystery with the environmental issues which I always loved about Peneolope’s books. As always the Australian Outback is on display and I have added a few more locations to my bucket list. There is small town rural living and the whole community that comes with that which is always fun to read - I really need a Greta in my life #loveGreta. A special aspect that Penelope often includes is for all the animal lovers out there - especially those who love horses.

‘There are fences to keep things in, and fences to keep them out. On what side of the fence do I belong?’

Yet for me I was enamored with themes concerning confronting childhood trauma and facing/overcoming fears with the inclusion of Patience being a math genius. This was a wonderful novel with a story of self-discovery, healing and being brave enough to go after your dreams. With tensions brewing, family dramas, environmental issues, Shelter From the Storm is a must read.

‘A river, a creek and a sandstone house. A shelter from the storm, a place to call home.’

Shelter from the Storm by author Penelope Janu is another stellar read set withinn and around Horeshoe Hill and the Halstead's farm. I love reading about the characters of Patience and Hugo - two characters who are so tortured - separated by events and time - and who have so much history, so much chemistry and who were so rightly depicted for each other. Both characters equally strong, equally vulnerable - Patience's character garnered more than a few cheers from this reader in the course of reading the book as she had more baggage and torment than any character within the narrative to overcome. There were many notable characters that rated a mention in this story, none more so than Greta! What a charming persona who radiated warmth from the start.

There are so many layers to unpack in this story that it was so easy to completely fall into the reading window created by Ms Janu - Shelter from the Storm is a story that is captivating to its conclusion with twists, turns, secrets, revelations and equally riveting characters that easily keep you glued to every development within the narrative - a story that was easy reading and one that I just wanted to continue.

Shelter from the Storm was a lovely surprise! I have never read anything by Penelope Janu and usually choose to read crime novels over rural romances however, I liked the sound of this story as it contained an environmental element. The two main characters Patience Cartwright, a naval officer, and Hugo Halstead, a biologist have a complicated past and both find themselves back in their childhood town of Horseshoe Hill where drama ensues. I really liked Greta, Hugo’s mother of Austrian descent and Hugo’s nephew Ryan, because he hates maths as much as me! Thanks to Better Reading for my preview copy.

Growing up, all Naval Lieutenant Patience Cartwright wished for was a happy home. As the middle child of three, she felt it was her duty to protect her sisters from their fathers wrath.

The only reprieve Patience ever received was the generosity from the Halstead family. Their son Hugo was her best friend during childhood, slowly becoming much more. Then Hugo did the worst thing ever by shattering Patience's heart.

Vowing to never set foot back in Horseshoe Hill, Patience enlisted in the Navy, dedicating her life to the sea. When accusations become rife and her career threatened, Patience is forced to take leave and is seconded to an environmental team based near her hometown. Of course, the one person who she's trying to forget is in charge!

When Patience falls seriously ill, Hugo's mother Greta offers that she convalescences at their family farm. As she slowly recuperates, Patience is reminded of all the memories that Horseshoe Hill holds from her past, and also the prospect of new ones awaiting to happen.

It's a pleasant return to Horseshoe Hill and the recurring characters that make up this small community! Absolutely adored Greta and her overwhelming kindness plus it was nice to see Patience's sisters Phoebe and Prim once more!

Hugo is such a sweetheart towards Patience- even if he's overprotective and wears his heart on his sleeve. Calling his love 'Imp' is totally cute and oh boy, their romance is extra spicy!

Appreciated the equine therapy utilised for Patience to overcome her fears and all the information about frogs. Also enjoyed learning maths alongside Hugo's nephew Ryan.

This will be released on January 4, and I can't wait for all of you to read this wonderful story.

Thanks to Harlequin Australia for this ARC to review!

Like a Hallmark Movie, but better!

Patience Cartwright has been removed from her naval ship and, to save her career, is sent on secondment where she also has a secondary secret mission to track down some financial anomalies.
Unfortunately for her, this secondment means working closely with biologist Hugo Halstead, her first love and the boy who broke her heart. To be able to complete her role she must learn to work with Hugo and his colleagues, conquer her fear of horses and not get caught spying!

But she ends up in hospital and needs a few months to recuperate. She doesn’t have anywhere else to go, so ends up back in Horseshoe Creek, living in Hugo’s parents Granny Flat! Can she forgive Hugo? And will she be able to stop herself falling in love with him all over again!?

I guess as with every romance, it was reasonably predictable, yet I loved it! It was great to have a strong and clever female character as the lead, and even better as we saw her helping others and breaking down tricky maths questions to help with school homework. Her talent with numbers was admired rather than mocked, even though she also used it as a tool to deal with anxiety.

I enjoyed the overall storyline as it had a lot of different elements, including the military piece, mystery, childhood trauma and abuse and, obviously, Romance. I also appreciated the mix of Australian places and wildlife and the Austrian cooking, especially having lived in Austria for a year – my mouth was watering at the thought of Apfelstrudel!

I found this a quick and easy read and was immediately drawn into the story. The backstory given was enough to provide the reader with a good understanding of their current behaviours without being too overwhelming or disruptive. I was also pleased with how the loose ends were tied up at the finish.

Overall, it was a great read!

Penelope Janu has a unique voice and writing style that I would recognise anywhere. Sleek and organised. Descriptions that provide wonderful comparisons of nature to the landscapes of our lives. Like her previous books, I really enjoyed her latest offering. Shelter From the Storm shines with Penelope’s masterful eye for details. Her legal background comes through, too, in the plot along with her passion and experience with horses. She wonderfully weaves her equine knowledge into the storyline. I particularly enjoyed all the horse scenes as I am also a lover and past owner of these gorgeous animals. I agree with the theory of fear in how ‘a horse is less likely to act unexpectedly if he feels safe.’ I think this behaviour reflects in people as well.

This story’s setting begins on the coast with Patience Cartwright. She has had a run in with a superior officer and she has not handled the situation well. This has put her position in jeopardy. To smooth things over, she must accept a secondment to work with an environmental team back in the country town near where she grew up. But there is more to this assignment than others know. She is on a secret mission to uncover potential fraud in the team. This makes her task hard but even harder is the requirement to return to her once familiar territory that embodies terrible memories of her past. She fled this area due to an unhappy childhood and a failed romance. Does she want to go back to the place that singed and broke her heart? Of course not. But she must. Unfortunately, one of the scientists working on this project studying the habitat of amphibians is Hugo Halstead, her childhood friend and past love. How will she deal with such a confrontation? The tension thickens as Penelope provides some incredibly tight and emotional scenes between these two.

Australian naval officer Patience is in many ways a fascinating character. She has an unusual gift— a mathematical mind that counts everything and measures her world through numbers. She is also very good at her job. But like most people, she is not perfect and even though she is a very independent strong woman who can tackle extreme challenges in her work realm, she is afraid of horses after having a bad fall when she was younger. To her credit though, she is determined to overcome her fear and get back in the saddle. This creates much concern for Hugo, which then reveals his true interest and care of her.

The topics of fear, abuse and bullying are a great part of this novel: three things that Patience has known in her life. Her father is a troubled man and has left many scars on his family. Thankfully, Patience has two loving sisters Phoebe and Primrose (names that start with P!). There are some great heart to heart chats that give us more insight on these women’s lives.

When Patience becomes injured and falls to a severe infection, she must stay with Hugo’s parents. Greta is a kind motherly lady (and an excellent cook) who takes care of her while she recuperates. It is a valuable reprieve for Patience who reconnects with the beauty that surrounds her (the garden scenes are heavenly). Here is where she begins to work out the matters of the heart. Forgiveness is on the horizon like a ship on the sea, edging closer to shore. Also, during this time, she learns of a secret between Greta and her mother.

As stated in the story, fate has a way of working things out. The reference to a puzzle is mentioned again and again. This novel is beautifully rendered so that the pieces come together in a tender and triumphant way. I truly loved the journey as the sights, sounds and layers of meaning rise like mist off the land after a summer rain. I highly recommend Shelter from the Storm. 5 Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to the Better Reading team for my uncorrected advance reading copy. I enjoyed reading this intriguing story about career, love, and family affairs. The story is set in the country town of Horseshoe Hill. Patience Cartwright has been assigned to a secondment for environmental biology research that brings her closer to her first love, Hugo Halstead. Their relationship is tested through time. When Patience is injured, Greta and Derek (Hugo’s parents) look after her and shelter her. Patience builds up the trust to overcome her fear as she is getting close to solving her work assignment and decides what is matter to her.

The best way to start the year when on holidays is with the latest Penelope Janu novel. Shelter from the Storm is, I think, my favourite one yet! If you like your romance reads to have smart, complex women, an intelligent mystery and a gorgeous man who doesn't conform to the cliched male lead, this novel is for you. Highly recommend.

Book Review -

Shelter from the Storm by Penelope Janu

Shelter from the Storm is the perfect holiday read. What a great way to start 2023.

This is my favourite Penelope Janu novel that I have read. Shelter from the Storm explores life after trauma and the power of love.

The characters' backstories are well developed and help to uncover their motivations, feelings and life choices. Patience, a naval officer, is highly gifted with numbers and is passionate about her job at sea. When on secondment, Patience finds herself in situations that are unlike anything she has experienced or that she expected to uncover. She is by far, my favourite character. Patience is intelligent, kind and good at her job. When faced with her past, she is challenged to revisit a part that has shaped who she is today. Patience is a character who is true to herself. Penelope Janu has celebrated Patience and brought to life a courageous and complex character who learns to simplify and return to nature.

There is a strong connection between Patience and Hugo, who brings Patience back to the past to move forward into her future. Their romance is slow, with a whole lot of steam close to the end.

Penelope Janu has written a novel with intrigue, romance and country atmosphere. I would recommend this novel for lovers of country romance. I take my hat off to you, Penelope Janu. What a great read.

Thank you @harlequinaus @penelopejanuwriter for #gifting me a copy of Shelter from the Storm.

Romantic. Environmental. Endearing. I love sitting down with a new Penelope Janu novel. I really love her ‘clever, complex, adventurous heroine and heroes’, you always get so much more than a love story. I loved being in the Horseshoe Hill world again. Shelter from the Storm completely got me thinking about ‘bullies..that should be held accountable’, the love life of frogs..who knew ‘female frogs can choose a mate and carry him around, no matter the size difference’…and the fact that ‘mathematics won’t let you down because it makes perfect sense’, all to the soundtrack of ABBA.
It’s the gorgeous read I have come to expect from this wonderful and talented author.

I enjoyed this story very much. In addition to the relationship between the main characters, there is a mystery to solve, and I learnt a lot about the important role frogs play in our precious natural environment!
I also liked the secondary characters and the vivid descriptions of the landscape. Patience is a fascinating character and I thought Hugo was an excellent match for her. I could realistically see them forming a lifelong bond, which is what I like to see in a romance.
I highly recommend this book to not only romance readers, but readers of compelling Australian fiction generally.

This is the third year in a row that my first read has been Penelope Janu’s new release and it’s always a perfect way to start the reading year. All her books exist in the same world and the characters are generally connected to at least one of the characters from the previous book (or one before that). In this book, we meet Patience, who is Phoebe’s sister (Phoebe was in Clouds On The Horizon which detailed the troubled childhood of the three sisters, Phoebe, Patience and Prim) and Hugo, who was Sapphie’s close friend from Starting From Scratch. Patience is in the Navy and has often been posted to boats overseas, some disciplinary issues lead to her being seconded to an environmental team as an assistant with an added role known to no one else in the team. Working on that project is Hugo Halstead, someone from Patience’s younger years. They swam in the same swim team and like everyone else who knew Hugo, Patience developed a crush on him – that seemed reciprocated until he broke her heart. Patience has avoided him ever since and when she’s injured and needs care, the only place for her to go is with Hugo’s parents who have a farm. For Patience, that means she won’t be able to avoid him and what happened between them years ago, any longer.

I just love her books and this one is no exception. I enjoyed Patience’s personality – she’s not exactly what old school military people might see as Navy material. She’s a bit rebellious, she’s a bit more tolerant when her recruits act up and break the rules and she’s not the type to take bad behaviour from superiors. However she’s being punished for speaking out and one of her commanding officers is disapproving of her and wants her out of the service. This secondment to the environmental project is really Patience’s last chance to stay in a job that she desperately values. She’s something of a genius with mathematics and numbers but isn’t suited to teaching and without the Navy, it seems she feels like she’d be lost. She definitely has trauma from their childhood, much like Phoebe. Each of the sisters process it in a different way and it impacts them in different ways as well.

As with most (if not all?) of Penelope Janu’s other books, there’s a strong environmental theme running throughout this book. Hugo is a biologist who specialises in amphibians so there’s a lot of information about some species or types of frogs and their habitats and different breeding and statistics. Patience can learn and memorise pretty much anything and when she takes over writing blog posts about Hugo’s work, it gives her an opportunity to reproduce what she has learned. I love frogs – I think they’re amazing. I was always the one that had to rescue them out of my parent’s pool, because my dad has a phobia of frogs. There are some really interesting types and this book mentions a few we’ve learned about through being members of the Zoo here, like the southern corroboree frog. There’s also quite a bit of talk about farming sustainably and Hugo has bought a particular property with the sole focus of rehabilitating parts of it. During her secondment, Patience works with a very particular-in-his-ways scientist, who was against her being chosen for the role but Patience proves herself to be very competent and the two of them build this little friendship which is very sweet. Patience has that ability, to endear herself to almost anyone and she’s genuinely very competent at many things. And the things that she cannot do, she is determined to be able to do, in order to fulfil her role, even when it’s something that legitimately terrifies her. I also love the animals that appear in these books – quite often recently it’s been horses and it’s made me revisit my childhood days as a frustrated horse-obsessed pre-teen and teen, who never was able to own a horse!

Hugo is also lovely – I liked him in Sapphie’s book and suspected we’d see him again and I thought his backstory with Patience was done very well. There were good reasons for why what happened, happened and even though it has been years since they have interacted meaningfully, Hugo knows her so well and has known her for so long. He’s the sort of calm and steady person that will tether Patience, provide the sort of stability for her that she’s lacked in her life and his family love her and care for her. The three sisters are close and have had to be everything for each other for various reasons but you can tell how much Patience enjoys her connection with Hugo’s mother, who cooks for everyone like it’s an Olympic sport and who takes care of Patience when she’s been injured and sick, with a lot of love.

Reading this has made me want to re-read all the previous books – we get a brief glimpse of what Phoebe is up to and a cameo or two from Sapphie and I love that so much! It’s one of my favourite things about reading a linked series, that as well as getting new characters to enjoy, we get those little updates from previous ones. And we got a bit of Prim in this one (the youngest sister) so I’m very much looking forward to her getting her own story in the future.

Really enjoyable.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of Penelope Janu’s January 2023 release, Shelter from the Storm. I wanted to keep it for the holidays, but I couldn’t wait. I’ve read all of Penelope’s books and I have loved each and every one.

She writes smart, gorgeous, determined heroes and clever, compassionate, resilient and resourceful heroines, who have often overcome rocky childhoods and whose sometimes prickly exteriors protect their vulnerable hearts and emotions.

Shelter from the Storm is a slow burn second chance romance set in Horseshoe Hill. For those readers familiar with Penelope’s books, Patience, christened Imp (atience) by Hugo, is Phoebe’s sister. In addition to overcoming the hurt both Imp and Hugo experienced when their youthful romance fell apart, they also have to work their way through problems in Imp’s workplace (the navy) and financial irregularities in Hugo’s government funded environmental project.

The environment is a passion of the author’s, and I learn something in every book. If you’re into frogs there are several delightful Easter Eggs awaiting your discovery.

There is also an Easter Egg especially for romance readers, and I love Penelope’s twist on it. In addition, Imp and Hugo are her first characters to swear in page. His mother scolds, but I laughed in delight. Sometimes nothing but succinct Anglo-Saxon will articulate one’s feelings.

I suspect the author’s life experience has exposed her to different types of villains especially the well dressed variety. The ones who hide behind respectability. I think the chief villain of this book is her most dangerous to date. He’s a little bit of an Easter Egg too, in a poisoned chalice kind of way. I’m happy he went to prison. Not for long enough, I suspect. I don’t think he is her nastiest villain. Bad parents are hard to top, but it was good food for thought, the contrast between the girls’ father, first introduced in Phoebe’s book, and the suave lobbyist in this book. There is also a workplace predator who I am pleased to say got his comeuppance.

Many old friends made an appearance in this story, and the author introduced new ones, including Dr Rick Lipman, an environmental scientist on the spectrum. It’s a sensitive portrayal focused on capability. I liked Rick. He reminded me of The Good Doctor. I really liked the friendship that developed between him and Imp (the fact that she’s a math nerd undoubtedly helped) as well as the sub plot of his romance.

Shelter from the Storm is clever, funny and heartbreaking, thought provoking and loving. A great romance is a gift. There is nothing I would rather spend my time reading. It goes without saying I fell in love with Hugo. And with Imp. Such a sweetheart. I don’t think she belonged in the navy, but many of us have successful careers in something we aren’t suited to before we find another path. I finished the book with a happy sigh and the knowledge that all is well in the land of happily ever after. Highly recommended.

Shelter From the Storm by Penelope Janu is my first 5-star read of 2023. Penelope Janu is one of my favourite authors, and I look forward to reading her newest release each year.

Shelter From the Storm was something special, whether it was the way it was written, or the main character Patience herself, I found myself fully absorbed in this story, I felt I was reading every single word and at a slower pace than I normally would (this wasn't the case, it just felt that way), I don't really know how to describe how reading this novel made me feel other than I felt I was reading something special.

Patience is the second of the Cartwright sisters to tell her story as we met Phoebe in Clouds on the Horizon.

When the story starts Patience, a lieutenant in the navy is on base after being discharged from her ship. The reasons surrounding this draw attention to the power a commanding officer can have over their subordinate and how hard it can be for women especially to deal with unwanted behaviour from other officers. And this isn't only within the armed forces but in all different jobs and circumstances.

Patience has an affinity for numbers and often looks at things differently because of this, she uses counting to deal with stressful situations and can look at things and reel numbers and statistics off the top of her head. I felt a real connection to Patience, though I don't deal with stress and anxiety quite the same way, she spoke to me on a deep level. Patience is described as secretive and self-contained, and as her background and fears are uncovered it makes sense why she is the way she is.

Patience has a past with Hugo a biologist who is working on an important project. It has been years since Patience had her heart broken by him, but the impact it made on her has reverberated through her life and continues to do so. When they are reluctantly brought together again, the depth of emotion they are carrying from their previous friendship strikes deep in both.

The romance in this novel is full of so many ghosts and emotional baggage and I loved being there with Patience and Hugo as they work their way through their messy past and unpack everything in order to discover if there can be a future for them together. I felt Patience's emotions, her heartache and confusion about what she was feeling in my own being as I read her story. And Hugo was one special man, but then I've found Penelope Janu only knows how to write wonderful male characters as her leads (and side characters). I loved that Hugo completely 'got' Patience and accepted and loved her the way she was.

Hugo's family were a great support system for Patience along with a few side characters I've met before. Patience and Hugo's coworker Rick was also a great character, I appreciate that Penelope Janu gives us such a vast variety of people with an array of characteristics, in Rick's case he is a neurodiverse character and I think she did a really good job of portraying one of the ways this can play out in an individual.

Another thing I really enjoy about Penelope's novels is her love for the environment and how I always learn something new from each novel, in this case, I learnt a great deal about frogs and their habitats and the ecosystem that surrounds the waterways they live in.

This was a wonderful novel and is one of my favourites by Penelope Janu so far, a story of self-discovery, healing and being brave enough to go after what you truly want. I am really looking forward to the third Cartwright sister, Prim's story next year.

Shelter from the Storm by Penelope Janu was a beautifully written novel about romance, friendship, family and so much more. It's a story about Patience Cartwright, a navy lieutenant who has been placed on secondment in a team which includes her first love, Hugo. In a team where the work requires courage, strength and patience. Set amongst the Australian landscape Patience struggles to find where she belongs. It's the history between Hugo and his family and the care they envelope her with, which anchors Patience to a place she can call home. I loved the connection between Patience and Hugo. Despite their history, of feeling fearful about their love for each other, I found such a genuine warmth between the two main characters. I just wanted everything to turn out right. I absolutely loved Penelope Janu's depictions of Hugo's eyes; from 'sea-green like ocean', 'green and hard like emeralds' to 'Forest green. Moss green'. So descriptive! The cosy farmstead was enticing and the added mystery of an environmental malice was intriguing. Looking forward to reading more wonderful novels by this author.

I have enjoyed reading all of Penelope Janu’s books, her writing style flows well and the storyline is very descriptive.
This novel started slowly for me but I enjoyed the characters and detail given as the story unfolds.
The main character Patience isn’t treated fairly by her superior, she finds herself reassigned to work on a secret mission!
Patience never wanted to return to a place that holds so many bad memories, she’s forced to work on a team with someone she’d rather not see!
There are many tense and confronting moments, the characters are given situations that will push them to show their emotions and work together.
Patience has a challenging history but is slowly learning to move on and trust those around her, particularly when she’s injured! Hugo was a big part of her life and Patience learns to understand and forgive.

I appreciated the opportunity to read and review this book, sincere thanks to the publisher, NetGalley and author for my copy.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I will admit this book was a bit slow to pick up for me as i haven't read much romance but it was such a heartwarming, moving and beautiful story!
Hugo & Patience really do belong together and I just loved how patient and open Hugo was with Patience.
Patience was such a strong willed character I just loved her!
I loved Greta (Hugo's Mum) & Derek they were such beautiful people and just so caring to everyone but I did think Greta was a bit harsh on Hugo when it came to Patience she could see they were in love so why couldn't she just let things be from the start but I guess things worked out for the best in the end.
I also loved Patience relationship with her sisters after what they experienced as children they were so close they had to be!
I also enjoyed all the facts about frogs I had no idea there was so many.

Im not much of a reviewer...
Much like Jane Austins Persuasion, Shelter From The Storm by Penelope Janu takes on the Australian version of this classic. Patience Cartwright is in the Australian Navy after being reassigned from a ship to land operations she is put back in front of her childhood first love Hugo Halstead who has also been in "Half agony. Half hope" over the breakup with Patience. After giving her the cold shoulder and suggesting she isn't suitable for the role Patience does all she knows to throw herself into the assignment to prove her abilities. The story follows an awkward development of the relationship and facing demons of the past.
I enjoyed and would recommend this piece of Australian reading this novel with the many sub storylines within the main story.

Patience Cartwright is a extremely qualified Naval Officer who finds herself victimized by a senior officer which leads to her being sent off the ship.
She then has to accept a secondment, doing environmental studies close to where she grew up, alongside the man who she loved and who hurt her many years prior, Hugo Halstead.
The story follows Patience as being strongly independent has to rely on others after a serious injury.
She falls in love with the land while trying to work out Hugo.
I really enjoyed this book as it is my first of Penelope Janu's. I am sure to read more.
